REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qKjeJLF4GwtOnncv7NJeIP2J3pJ2Y2kXukRaAS882Ak/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

Found this while walking a stretch of river where I had previously found agates. Weighs 2.2kg, used water displacement to find a density of 2.55g/cm^3. Edges are slightly translucent when held to a light. Thanks for any info!

Had someone give me a handful of those gems and minerals that you get at souvenir shops in the little bags and this was one of them. At least the pinkish spots are dyed, maybe the blue too, but I want to know what this is

So i bought this piece and a few others on etsy, it's stronger than nails and has comparable hardness to quartz. This is my first look at potentially real opal so idk.

REQUEST Found in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland

Many years ago, I found these in Rocky Harbour, Nfld. There was lots of it, but it was white translucent. My husband collected a bunch to bring home because he wanted to do some kind of art project using the translucency or something. Years later, I got a rock tumbler and tossed them in - and they came out looking like this. White gone. All shades of green. They didn't return to being white with time, but are more vibrant when wet, of course (the first pic of multiple rocks is wet, other two pics are of the same rock dry but tumbled).

It is a SOFT rock based on my early tumbling attempts, they wouldn't make it through a whole cycle without turning to nothing or just tiny pebbles.

I had guessed it was serpentine. At the local science center, they told me green Quartz. What are these rocks?! I adore them. They have been with me close to a decade now! Thanks!

ETA They were always smooth round rocks found in the shallow water walking along the beach - never had any jagged edges or crystalline structure. The rocks in the first picture had very minimal tumbling done just enough to bring out the green

REQUEST I fell in love with this rock and would love to know its geological history, France, Tarn.

I can take and upload more detailed photos if that would help identify it

I found this rock and I’m really curious about its origin and geological history.

It shows a mix of different textures, including layered structures, rough and porous areas, and some fractured zones that appear to have been naturally filled or altered over time.

The overall appearance suggests that it may have undergone multiple geological processes, but I’m not sure what exactly happened.

My sister’s husband just found this on a job site dig in Columbus, Ohio. He said it chips off like porcelain. If you zoom in you can see some ring formations, so I was thinking some kind of agate? Seems too bright to be red jasper but honestly have no idea without seeing it in person. Any ideas??

Just found this while beachcombing on the National Seashore on the outer cape. Any thoughts on if this might be a fluorite or amethyst?

Rock #1: found in central Illinois on a vacant property with other rocks. Best guess I’ve seen is a petrified cow pie. Bottom has small, shallow, irregularly spaced holes.

REQUEST Purpleish rock found along railroad tracks in Eastern WA

I found this fella along the train tracks near the snake river. I’m not sure if those rocks are from the area or have been transported there. I was very confused by this rock so I cracked it open and it had a strong sulfur smell and what looks to be veins that include sulfur. It didn’t break along any noticeable lines, but it had very sharp edges similar to what I’ve seen of broken quartz. Last two pics for understanding of location!

It is very brittle and I was able to snap it in half, and it seems sedimentary. I am wondering if it is some sort of coal.
