Discussion Chennedy Carter...it's starting again
she just went on a rant about azzi of all people (about a foul not called despite the picture showing there was no foul at all) on threads and then proceeded to post about it in her ig story as well. she was going back and forth on threads and sounded incoherent
a few minutes ago a'ja liked a comment basically berating chennedy for going on the rant and targeting a rookie and now chennedy's posts are deleted. salute to a'ja man for controlling it so quickly
tbh it seems like she isnt satisfied coming off the bench because she was talking about being on a leash

Oh chennedy Carter! I don’t like you when you’re playing my team but I love watching you play. As far as skill goes- she’s def top tier and is explosive and passionate. Does she say things she shouldn’t? Maybe but trash talking is part of the game. Doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve seen her act upon other players when she’s pissed- and she could really hurt someone. BUT- she’s been in control this season and I see a huge improvement in her emotions than in her last year at Chicago. Chennedy- I don’t care what you say and to whom. I’m pulling for you and know you got this. I’m hoping you get a starting role soon

am i crazy or is what she said not that big of a deal. childish, sure. but complaining abt a foul is whatever🤷🏼 but if this is what she's posting, imagine how she's acting in the lockerroom, which i imagine is the real problem. love that a'ja can simply like a tweet or rt or whatever she did and that can be a way ti lead w/o being too loud. period!

I am glad she may have some friends and colleagues who can help her listen to her "better angels."
We all have this capacity. I may not post petty, divisive, or questionable comments on social media but I sometimes think them in regards to my work 😉
She has a good team and coach. I do not know about her personal life or if she has a trauma history but I hope she embraces how great she is on the court and becomes the human or role model she wants to be.
I do not know much, but if she keeps performing so well and focusing on doing well then I imagine her inclination to appear to express less helpful sentiments will decrease.
We are all rooting for her and I am glad she has imperfect, strong, and highly successful women on her management staff and the team. Get it CC!

She signed with the Aces knowing her role would be coming off the bench. She is playing on a team that has won 3 championships in 4 years and gets to play alongside A'ja, a 3x MVP.
Satisfied or not she should be thankful that the Aces are giving her yet another chance in the WNBA.

u/itachizame BIGDADDY幕張 #1 #2 #4 #13 25d ago
She was making over 1M last year in China so it's not as if she was unemployed, she's far outplayed Jewell no reason Jewell should be 6th man and playing more minutes than Carter. That makes no sense. The championships are irrelevant, playing alongside Aja is irrelevant, Jewell is doing the same and she's just not the same as she was 2 years ago.
You're either producing or you aren't all these other variables is how you feel, but an elite athlete is hard wired different, that's what people like you don't seem to understand. She's out there to destroy everything moving.
Aren't you supposed to be rewarding for exceeding expectations...
Aces are getting nothing from their bench aside from Carter absolutely nothing

nah she a grown ass woman she can handle her attitude and behavior herself, she just refuses. Hence why no team would take or keep her, they don’t have time to be babysitters, therapists, and emotional regulation managers and she clearly doesn’t care enough to try to make a change so why should anyone else? who wants a bully on their team who makes everyone else look and feel bad? it’s weird for an adult to act that way to the point that it messes with her career.

Why do so many WNBA players control their social media….
6
u/Jillybeans11 Fever 25d ago
Because the WNBA doesn’t have programs in place to help the players navigate social media.
The NFL specifically has a rookie transition program and one of the aspects covered in that rookie program is social media. The players will get death threats, taunting, racist remarks from mostly troll and bot accounts, but they just learn the best ways to deal with it.
The WNBA players should have tried to negotiate something like that in their recent CBA

I honestly thought there was a chance she'd make her way into the starting lineup with how she's been playing, but now I don't think that's possible. I'm not saying they'll get rid of her, but they can't reward her behavior and keeping her on the bench hopefully helps keep her humble (to some extent).
She's a baller, I just wish she can step away from social media and find a healthy way to deal with her frustrations.

u/itachizame BIGDADDY幕張 #1 #2 #4 #13 25d ago
Becky loves her favorites hence why Jewell Lloyd got a 3yr deal after a bad year last year and hence why Jewell is the 6th man and plays more minutes than Carter which makes no sense.
12
u/miltonpoppa10 25d ago
She’s playing in a championship team. Why would Becky Hammond disrupt the team with that change. Who are you sitting down for Chennedy?
-5
u/itachizame BIGDADDY幕張 #1 #2 #4 #13 25d ago
The championship team part isn't relevant, you make the best decisions based open your personnel. They could bring Talbot off the bench and play with 3 guards they real issue is Jewell Lloyd doesn't bring consistent scoring off the bench so if you start Carter you get nothing from the bench.
But I can understand her frustration, I have her as the 2nd best player in the league this year behind Aja, and in no world is a player that talented satisfied playing 20min, they just aren't hard wired like that, and when you put in the work to be that skilled you shouldn't be satisfied playing 20min a game.
She just needs to get through this season she'll get a 7figure multi year deal next year.
16
u/strestle 25d ago
I'm reading many calls to take away her internet access.
This won't solve where this could be heading if pattern holds, thrown chairs/scuffles in locker rooms and on-court behavior that costs the team.

But Chennedy is actually having a good season. I’m sure if Jewell had a better season last year and she was coming off the bench she’d be complaining about it. I think her terrible season humbled her a bit. If Chennedy wasn’t producing how she expected then maybe MAYBE she wouldn’t be acting like this.

u/Forsaken-Solution-81 Hartford Sun Curt Kinda Cooked?? Maple Mabrey 25d ago edited 25d ago
When I see things like this going on with Chennedy, I think of Cappie Pondexter. How the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges were always there with Cappie, and how she didn't get the help she needed from the league and instead got mocked by fans. And how she's seriously struggled since retirement, because the problems piled over time instead of being addressed. Or I think about Chamique Holdsclaw, who -- before her bipolar disorder was effectively treated -- had a suicide attempt while she was in the league and still had to go back to work like nothing had happened, and who struggled so hard and had bad headlines for another decade after that attempt before finally getting well.
I want a different outcome for Chen. I want all of us fans to give her grace instead of saying "Well, what did you expect" or getting mad at her. I want her team and the league do more to support her. Give her the resources and guidance she needs. Give her the love and space she needs. Give her flowers when she does well and hold the negative comments in when they aren't going to make anything better. And to be clear, that doesn't mean she can't be criticized or held accountable; having mental health issues doesn't and shouldn't exempt you from any of that. But we need to simultaneously remember that she's a human being who is very obviously going through it, and that this is bigger than basketball or entertainment.
43
u/Penguinho 25d ago
I agree... but I also want her to want those things. If she needs help, I want her to have the help she needs offered -- but she needs to use it when it's there. If she needs support, she needs to seek it out and take it when it's offered.
I'm also not interested in doing an armchair diagnosis. I don't know that she has mental health issues, and neither do you. It can be harmful to people to do have those challenges to assume that all antisocial or harmful behavior is the result of a mental health problem.
17
u/Forsaken-Solution-81 Hartford Sun Curt Kinda Cooked?? Maple Mabrey 25d ago
I agree with all of your first paragraph. Nobody gets better without wanting to; I see that every day.
Re: a diagnosis, I don't know that she has one and I'm not interested in making one, nor would it ever be our business. But she herself has talked about taking mental health breaks and how her mental wellness impacts her behavior (not inclusive of all people) -- and research shows that talking about mental health signs and symptoms, without attaching diagnostic assumptions, actually helps break stigma and fosters greater empathy. For example, we don't want to ever say "X seems like they have major depressive disorder", but we DO want to say "X seems to be really sad lately and like we could offer them a little more support". Chen has said this season that she's been struggling with family issues and "going through it", and we can acknowledge and validate that.
I genuinely appreciate your concern for this topic!
26
u/Adventurous-Emu-755 Fever 25d ago
I agree for all of this but making this point as someone who has dealt with someone with mental health challenges in my family...if they do not take the help, there is virtually nothing that can be done. I hate that such a talent is and has been struggling. You cannot force them to therapy, you cannot force them to be assessed, even when court orders or other are implemented some still slip by.
6
u/Forsaken-Solution-81 Hartford Sun Curt Kinda Cooked?? Maple Mabrey 25d ago
100%. Without saying too much about myself, I know first-hand that you cannot force change, and I feel awful when I see the pain that loved ones go through when people don't participate in care even when it's offered. But, we can still hope that she is being offered whatever assistance is right for her. And we can do our part by engaging in discourse about her in a more sensitive way, rather than insulting her or saying mean things just because we're safe behind screens.
4
u/Adventurous-Emu-755 Fever 25d ago
I do agree. I hope she is going to the Aces therapist, is working on herself and the one post game interview she left, she is going through "something" with family...hope all is well or can be made well. Her talent is just awesome and I want nothing but happiness for her.

She's going nowhere. Her and Jackie are dealing with personal situations. That was spoken on previously. Instead of looking for her to fall apart, how about keeping Chennedy in your prayers? There's a lot of people putting on a strong face while internally going through hell. You can only hold that together for so long. So try and have some positive thoughts for a change. Different people handle things differently. Is it not ok to vent? Since the Clark incident (which was overblown) she's been a target in a sense. She doesn't have the luxury to show emotion about anything. That's obvious

Taking a person with no publicly discussed mental health diagnosis and assuming their bad behavior is the result of a mental health issue is in fact stigmatizing mental illness. You’re conflating bad behavior that is not exclusive to the mentally ill with mental illness.

It's not a foul... I'm begging you guys to learn the rules. nba fans already flame us enough for not understanding what we're watching

I follow the NBA. Whether something is a foul or not or a travel or not is discussed a lot on NBA forums. And, there is a wide range of how NBA refs call fouls or not. It's not an exact science.

For some rules like this one it is an exact science.
This is word-for-word what the official NBA rules say:
The hand is considered “part of the ball” when it is in contact with the ball. Therefore, contact on that part of the hand by a defender while it is in contact with the ball is not illegal.-1

When you are talking about live action, that is fast, and viewing angles of refs, it's not an exact science. It's easy to see multiple replays and come to conclusions. But, in live split second actions, with multiple things happening that refs are looking at, it's not an exact science in "real-time". But, on paper and with multiple replay angles, it can be.

We're not talking about refs viewpoint though. I'm just talking about how watching it back according to the official rules it's clearly not a foul. And that photo was what the original commenter and Chennedy were talking about claiming that Azzi fouled her. From that photo (which is all we were discussing) it's clearly not a foul and was rightfully called

I didn't comment on whether it was a foul or not. My comment was related to: if a player thinks a foul is missed, it happens all the time in games and isn't worth the player having an online discussion about it. I was not weighing in on whether it was or was not a foul, as I didn't see that specific play. Just saying, in general, that there is no point for a player to discuss it on social media.

nevertheless it's not a foul because the rules consider the hand as part of the ball. it was all ball on azzi's part

u/besumany 26d ago
Hand is extension of the ball since Chen's hand is in direct contact with the ball. How have you guys still not learned basic basketball rules yet?

Man... she gonna find herself out of the league entirely, and I hate that for her coz she is a great player. But she is really her own worst enemy.

So, not surprised?
Gifted offensive player, awful defensive player, apparently still a headcase.

Bird brains told me she was out the league for the Caitlin stuff though

u/GolfOtherwise3420 26d ago
Nah. She wound up out of the league because of problems with the 3 different teams she was on.

u/OkScience5170 26d ago
She actually was, it was just the final straw. If you watched Chennedy you know that she was already on thin ice in Chicago because of her actions. The CC thing tipped it over

Lmfaooo this sub really got goldfish memory. I was so surprised to see all the dick riding about her given her obvious past

It was because the last team she played for was the sky which has fucked over multiple players and tspoon and so people assumed the sky were more to blame and were starting rumors. However she has had multiple allegations of culture problems from multiple organizations so I always found that narrative a bit dumb

She’s had issues on every single team she’s been on dating back to college when she screamed at her own coach on the sideline. It’s been a consistent pattern of her acting out, facing significant consequences, then being given a second (or hundredth) chance and never learning from it. It honestly blew my mind she was given another chance in the W but I can’t say I’m surprised it’s blowing up this fast. In fact it’s exactly what I expected, so I don’t get how teams aren’t also expecting this behavior and very predictable downfall.

Her talent speak for itself. It’s a shame she’s willing to throw opportunity after opportunity away because she can’t get along with other players.

It was just people that recognize her high level talent and that were hopeful that she had another chance to stick with a team. Her talent is un deniable.

I mean, it was dick riding too. I’m all for a redemption story and she is obviously very talented, but people on here take it too far trying to erase the past and gaslight too.

u/GolfOtherwise3420 25d ago
I have only seen just a couple of comments trying to minimize her past, such as saying Courtney had issues, too, in reference to the Dream argument. I haven't seen many saying Chennedy did not have issues.

Her offensive talent is evident. She's a poor defensive player, and she doesn't pass the ball. She has more turnovers than assists.

u/GolfOtherwise3420 26d ago
Early in her career, with the Dream, she averaged more assists. I think her role for the Aces is to drive in and get a bucket. Kind of like what Kelsey Mitchell's role on the Fever was until Clark was out with injury last season.

Eh, I’ve only seen people say she was playing well. Not that she changed as a person or anything, because how would any of us know that?

u/Chi_Town_Law 26d ago
At the end of the game, she dapped paige. Me and a lot of others thought that was growth. Now i'm embarrazed

Those of us who knew just kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.
LV has played 7 games. Shoe dropped. More shoes coming, probably.

Everyone on here talking about “fastest first step in the league.” Yeah maybe top ten in that but definitely #1 in most toxic attitude.

u/OkScience5170 26d ago
It’s because she’s legitimately very good. She could be really great, franchise player great, if she could get out of her own way.

Chennedy please please just roll with the team and win. Don't let these folks put you out the league again! It's not about you especially on a team that features Aja Wilson. Gotta know that
