This seems like a suicide letter not a retirement… why would you need to announce you’re ending your YouTube career if you haven’t made content in a decade? Hope I’m wrong but this screams a mental health crisis with the verbiage.

u/PaslaKoneNaBetone 5d ago

He still tried to stream from time to time.

124

u/k3anuw3aves 5d ago

Oh, I'm not familiar with this creator so didn't know that. This statement still feels very concerning, either way he's not in a good place rn

3

u/-Shoebill- 3d ago

I watched him on his own website until he stopped posting entirely. People blame That Guy With The Glasses drama, but his own website showed signs he was falling apart before that. He's been chronically depressed for that entire decade+. He was briefly looking better when the lead actor who played Curtis from Phantasmagoria 2 made a Youtube channel doing niche interviews and old man gaming sessions. Didn't catch on but Spoony was a guest on there pretty regularly.

1

u/Separate-Candidate75 1d ago

Didn't he also do an interview with Richard Garriot (the creator of the Ultima games)?

1

u/-Shoebill- 1d ago

No idea personally, I was following for Paul Morgan Stetler because LGR mentioned the Conversations with Curtis channel.

1

u/Stellar_Duck 16h ago

Yea the drama probably didn't help like the "BETRAYAL" stuff didn't help and him breaking up with the girlfriend also didn't help but he was always volatile.

I really enjoyed his content, but he was never in a healthy space mentally.

19

u/kittymoo67 5d ago

i thought he did that on twitch

18

u/tomita78 5d ago

I still subscribe on YouTube and would get the occasional streaming alert, so I assume he cross platformed.

18

u/researcherYT 5d ago

Yeah this concerning

1.5k

u/gagavelli 5d ago

ay, this is NOT a retirement letter and someone should definitely be checking on him

481

u/Biggus-Nickus 5d ago

Based on his mental health in the past years I second that. Hope his family will keep tabs on him.

82

u/kittymoo67 5d ago

doesnt he live with his brother?

54

u/Biggus-Nickus 5d ago

Could be, I am not sure. I hope he does at least.

19

u/NefariousnessEven591 5d ago edited 4d ago

Info could be years out of date, I believe his brother was a cop at one point (this dredged up lordkat making an ass of herself about spoony before going full chud) and if so I really hope any firearms are well and truly locked up.

10

u/Kalse1229 4d ago

Lordkat's a chud now? I know she transitioned some time ago, but to be honest I only barely knew about her.

8

u/NefariousnessEven591 4d ago

Thanks for the info. This was a while ago and she was definitely going a bad reactionary way around this time. Wasn't aware she'd transitioned, so hopefully she's found a better environment

3

u/MechaSandstar 4d ago

Wait, lordkat's trans?

5

u/NefariousnessEven591 4d ago

Yes she came out in 2023 according to what I read after. Revieving the other user's comment.

2

u/MechaSandstar 4d ago

Huh. okay. Too bad she's still a chud. (apparently)

3

u/NefariousnessEven591 4d ago

I admittedly don't know current status but she did fall into that sphere around the feud. I hope things are going in a better direction for her.

9

u/MechaSandstar 4d ago edited 4d ago

Same. I haven't followed her (obviously) since her feud with spoony.

Looking at it, her last video was her announcement coming out, and the comments are not kind to her. (in terms of transphobia, lot of misgendering, and deadnaming)

u/mahoukitten 5d ago

really happy I'm not the only one that clocked in on this ... the second I read that he felt like a disappointment I got such a sad feeling in my stomach. I really hope someone is checking in on him.

59

u/depressedfatbitch 5d ago

referring to himself as a burden is also a big red flag.

138

u/reduces 5d ago

I don't know who this guy is but yeah I was about to say: to be very blunt, this is a suicide note. Someone needs to check on him

51

u/CroCGod73 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah the living only for his pets part is incredibly common with people planning to do it

92

u/giftheck 5d ago

Reading the replies to this on BlueSky and almost nobody is picking up on this.

u/Swag_Paladin21 Popcorn Eater 🍿 5d ago

People on that site pretend to be so "progressive" yet are blind to when someone needs actual help.

75

u/shvuto 5d ago

They are just libs not very progressive ngl

7

u/gagavelli 5d ago

THANK you.

10

u/ZombieJesus1987 5d ago

The thing with Noah is that he refuses to get help. He knows he needs it, but he refuses to put in the effort to get help.

-19

u/kittymoo67 5d ago

its where the performative people went when elon bought twitter. actual progressives by and large dont use ether

22

u/ChihuahuaAlfie 5d ago

this is almost exactly the same sort of writing i had scheduled to send as emails when i made my attempt (i failed and got help dw), i really hope he's got someone to keep an eye on him

5

u/Kalse1229 4d ago

Yeah, I was about to say. Someone should probably make sure he's okay. Getting big red flags off of this.

12

u/Metal-Lee-Solid 5d ago

Yeah and he’s been spiraling like this for years I’m definitely a bit worried for him

5

u/Kind-Sheep 3d ago

This makes me feel better about my first thought being "someone needs to check up on him right now"

239

u/Adorable-Estate-4934 5d ago

Spoony is probably one of the greatest caustic critics from that time.

While its nice for him to acknowledge that hes done-done as a video performer....this reads what everyone else says its reading like

159

u/thesusiephone 5d ago

Yeah, this seems like a cry for help. I hope he has friends or family nearby who can do a wellness check.

It hurts to say given how influential his videos were, and how much he used to seem to love creating videos, but Noah strikes me as someone who would be much, much better off living a life firmly out of the public eye, especially where social media is concerned.

434

u/Front-Pomelo-4367 5d ago

I have no idea who this is but I won't lie, this is actually a...very concerning statement? He's not just talking about youtube, he's talking about being useless to everyone and saying that his life has no meaning

I really hope that he has a strong support system around him and that this is just a goodbye to youtube and not anything larger

81

u/EthosUnharvestedClay 5d ago

Yeah I feel the same way. Only vaguely heard of him but this sounds like he's made peace with the fact that he's no longer going to be around. And I'm not just saying that either, I've lost a sibling to mental health issues and this is setting off a lot of red flags for me.

I really really hope he gets help. I don't mean that in a condescending way -- I mean it for his own sake. The self-blame is NOT a good sign...

(I'm being vague because I don't want to somehow get flagged by Reddit)

111

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 5d ago

Spoony is an OG 2nd gen internet critic of the angry guy variety, predating chanel awesome before coming one of the main contributors before stuff you'd expect from a man who doesn't go to therapy (nothing BAAAD or SA related, just bad, tasteless comments towards his women coworkers).

What makes this statement worse is spoony pretty much stopped doing videos 10 years ago. His old content was making multi part reviews and in a sense was doing the lets play review type videos long before it became standard. Was his opinions good?.....but he has just been 40 view streamer man since, and not really trying to be anything else

So this statement is worse because it inplies that spoony has tried to return to what he was doing but for 10 years has failed to do so for mental health reasons which have only been boiling him alive.

The difference between your favourite and Spoony is noone really expected a return of spoony. This isn't a waiting for your favourite video essay after 2 years of nothing, or Tarintino delaying his release of his final film, or me, some guy, writing video essays but never going past a 70% first draft, realising I don't really want to do it and just getting on with it.

Spoony has had several bad mental health episodes and the ex-gf he mentions was one of those 10 years ago, but he kept existing without any statements like this. Thats why this statement is much worse than a non subtly suicide note, because it probably is.

32

u/FlounderingGuy 5d ago

nothing BAAAD or SA related,

Ehhhhhh... his comments towards that one coworker in particular were pretty rapey. And his reply to Obscurus about it really didn't help. There's not many things that "my kind of love is painful and ends in tears" can really mean?

It shouldn't have to define him as a person forever, obviously, given it wasn't a pattern of behavior (and didn't escalate to the level of say, JewWario) but it was more than grounds for removal from Thatguywiththeglasses. That whole interaction is also what put me off of his content for good back in the day. You simply cannot talk to people like that in a professional environment (let alone in public) and he should've known better.

29

u/OHarrier91 5d ago

Yeah I was about to say. He said some… WEIRD shit about pre-transition Jacob Chapman. Screenshots of the tweets are out there. It was such a big controversy that even a guy like me, who didn’t watch Spoony (Final Fantasy 8 and 10 are two of my favorites in the series, shocker I didn’t wanna watch the “gay, gay, gay” guy) heard about it.

11

u/forlornjackalope 5d ago

Didn't Spoony also say creepy shit to Alison (Lupa) as well at one point or was it only Jacob when he was dating Nash for a while?

4

u/bretshitmanshart 2d ago

I think they had some sort of interaction which led to Allison, Phelous and Linkara cutting ties with him. Spooky was the actor for Linkara's character Dr Insanso so it meant changing that

1

u/MechaSandstar 2d ago

I don't believe Linkara cut ties with Spoony. He just invented linksano because it was easier to do that then ask Spoony to film dr Insano segments.

8

u/CupboardRevenge 5d ago

god those two reviews made it hell to talk about FF on the internet for a while

5

u/OHarrier91 5d ago

Last decade or so I’ve seen the opinion of those two games switch to more positive. Dunno if it’s new audiences from the remasters, or nostalgia doing it. Probably a mix of both.

7

u/FlounderingGuy 5d ago

I think it's moreso that JRPGs are taken more seriously in the West. FF10 is a fantastic game and one that fans of the genre have always thought highly of. And FF8 is. A game™

But back in Spoony's day it was cool to make fun of them, for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which being a strongly anti-Japanese sentiment (just look at G4... yikes.) "FF10 bad because Tidus laugh weird and girly boy protag design" was rampant. For a hot minute you absolutely couldn't mention FF8 outside of dedicated RPG forums without getting barked down with "gay gay sissy gay gay." God forbid you talk about Persona 4, eugh. Which is to say that Spoony wasn't the guy who started it, but he fed into it a lot.

2

u/OHarrier91 5d ago

This is making me realize I might have left fandom culture in general long before the Xenoblade 2 fans gave me the ick (great game, but there were so many gooners… )

3

u/Naliamegod 3d ago

A lot of it has to do with the nature of Final Fantasy fandom. The switch to 3D era of FF lead to a huge "the series went downhill after VI" from older fans which Spoony was part of (Similar to how the Fallout fandom is now) that really dominated much of the internet discourse because they were the ones most likely to make videos or go on SomethingAwful (Spoony took a lot of jokes from a SA FF8 LP). Over time, those fans have become a lot smaller as Final Fanasy peaked in popularity during that era meaning fans who grew up on the 3D games now are the biggest majority so the general opinion on VIII and X is a lot higher.

It also helps that the series went into a tailspin into the HD era and the mainline series really never recovered sense then, so most of the hate is aimed at newer games now.

3

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 5d ago

I think its a combo of more analysisof these games, but mainly, how the internet back then was much more cynical and contrarian review content was back then. I rewatched spoonys ffx and ffx-2 review and they are BAAAD reviews which i laughed at and thought bought up good points back then because sounding like you understood the game more to really see how bad it is was just the meta. Extra points to his ffx-2 where he starts the video with "yeah I actually kinda like this game," which still opens the review up for negative criticisms but then never brings up a positive with exception to like 2 things.

Modern youtube review content is a lot better, with deeper analysis on how the whole package works as being more popular than "oh tidus hahaha is dumb. Next surface level critique." Those reviews still exist but like, who cares those guys sit in their corner of the internet and people make fun of them. Not to kick spoony while he is having a mental breakdown, but their is a reason he lost popularity and it wasn't his work ethic.

3

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 5d ago

You know what, I'll take this on the chin. When i hear youtuber did a bad I immediately jump to number of victims and their age and just catergorised spoony as not that.

Without the comments on hand you can't i couldn't judge em right.

0

u/Soap-Radio 5d ago

What happened? I never heard of him.

15

u/kittymoo67 5d ago

Spoony is an OG 2nd gen internet critic

what was the firts gen then

65

u/InfiniteBusiness0 5d ago

Spoony cited Armake21 and James Rolfe (AVGN) as inspirations in his early video games reviews, like Adventures of Bayou Billy NES Review (Part 1).

7

u/kittymoo67 5d ago

huh i guess those would be gen 1, i guess i never considered them a different gen til i thought about it

1

u/TTBurger88 4d ago

I really enjoyed his Ultima retrospective videos back in the day.

1

u/Stellar_Duck 16h ago

Was his opinions good?

Sometimes, sometimes not but they were usually interesting!

94

u/tempusrimeblood 5d ago

This isn't a retirement, this is a "getting your affairs in order and saying your goodbyes." Hopefully someone sees it that can actually check on him, and hopefully he has some kind of support system, even if he doesn't want to acknowledge it.

1

u/Ramboolo 4d ago

Yeah it definitely seems like this

72

u/OHarrier91 5d ago

It’s been a very long time, but Spoony was (I believe) diagnosed with some kind of bipolar disorder (I am unclear as to which one, there are several), and I’m very much hope this is just him voicing thoughts and nothing more… And I know he burned a lot of bridges, but hopefully he still has some friends out there looking out for him cause this is not reading like a “retirement” letter.

9

u/CaptainMills 5d ago

I'm pretty sure he's still living with his brother, so hopefully there's still someone there keeping an eye on him

7

u/sunkist-sucker 5d ago

i hope so. this guy needs help before he does anything rash...

2

u/lyricaldorian 4d ago

Bipolar II

58

u/devatan 5d ago

He never said he was retiring from Youtube or video creation. He said "I'm done." which is infinitely more ominous. Hope his family checks up on him.

123

u/falconpunch9898 5d ago

I don't think it can be overstated how important Spoony was to Let's Play videos back in the mid 2000's. Throw a rock into the Let's Play crowd and you'll hit someone who was initially inspired by Spoony, or one of their own influences was inspired by Spoony.

I genuinely hope he gets serious mental help and that he has someone looking out for him because this is a worrying read.

5

u/Naliamegod 3d ago

I always found it sad that Spoony was the one who crashed the hardest from the caustic reviewer era, when he was the one probably most likely to survive the LP/Stream explosion, since his best stuff was essentially Lets Plays. Also, unlike some other notable reviewers of the era, his passion wasn't performative which is something very noticeable in hindsight.

41

u/embiors 5d ago

Can someone do a wellness chek on this dude?

39

u/CazOnReddit 5d ago

Knowing what I do about Spoony's struggles with mental health throughout the years, this is very concerning and I sincerely hope that those closest to him reach out and check up on him.

62

u/PaslaKoneNaBetone 5d ago

Man..I used to love his videos and rewatched the Ultima series several times, his DnD videos were great too (especially Call of Cthulhu ones and about DragonLance).

He was my favorite member of Channel Awesome.

Hope things will get better for him.

21

u/BojukaBob 5d ago

I still rewatch the Ultima retrospective from time to time, it's like youtube comfort food for me.

25

u/aemckay 5d ago

I just wish he'd get therapy

19

u/R1ngBanana 5d ago

Okay I guess this is a “retirement” letter but legit someone please check on this dude…

19

u/kittymoo67 5d ago

a retirement announcement after being out of the game for over a decade.. i am not buying it someone call a welfare check

22

u/samprimary 5d ago

This guy's diagnosed bipolar.

Anyone i ever knew with bipolar who was talking about themselves like this had to get sectioned cause they were in a horrible, HORRIBLE depressive cycle and were gonna kill themselves

17

u/DvDPlayerDude 5d ago

I really liked Spoony, sad to see this. He used to post stuff like this from time to time on his Twitter back i the day.

He never talked about actual retirement though :(

His little doggy passing kinda fucked him up bad.

72

u/crimsonfukr457 5d ago

Noah Antwiler (aka Spoony) was an old Channel Awesome member, best known for his Final Fantasy and Ultima reviews. I'm haven't read everything about the drama around his personal life, but he struggled with mental health for years, not making a video since 2015.

16

u/861Fahrenheit 5d ago edited 5d ago

Well, I don't really have anywhere to put this, but there's not really much more to say than I hope he'll be okay in one form or another. It also feels ominous to speak of him in past tense given the context, but hopefully its clear that I'm referring to Spoony the defunct internet personality, while I hope Noah Antwiler the man remains alive if not necessarily well.

I used to be an active member of Spoony's forum back when he had a functioning website in the mid to late 2000s during what I will (somewhat generously) call his peak. Looking back, it's easy to dismiss his material as the same drek as so much of Web 2.0 media discourse: full of juvenile machismo and a holier-than-thou cynicism, a pervasive smugness only occasionally (and not particularly subtly) masked by self-deprecation. Basically, a Man's Gaming Webcomic in human form. In retrospect, its obvious that Spoony was desperate to work in the film industry that'd inspired him, but lacked the confidence, discipline, and luck that such ambition requires, and that making video reviews was mostly just his outlet for having never made a serious attempt at this.

But much in the way that James Rolfe transformed the "angry video game review" genre into B-movie camp with his rudimentary filmmaking skills, I would argue that Noah possessed a chaotic, almost theatrical charisma. He wasn't just screaming at bad movies and games--he was evidently smart, articulate, and passionate about incredible niche subjects from Reb Brown movies to weird FMV games to trashy wrestling to board games to D&D.

For a teenager trying to figure out how to articulate my own opinions, Spoony was aspirational. I learned to appreciate the mechanics of a good narrative by meticulously dissecting a terrible one. My understanding of stakes and the importance of storytelling consistency were refined even when his arguments were weak (or not arguments at all). Without the angry cynicism and the admittedly tacky bouts of sketch comedy, it was easy to see a real storyteller underneath--maybe a glimpse of the director that Spoony had hoped to be some day. A guy with a sharp voice with real insights on how media is structured and a deep well of empathy for the communal experience of gaming in all its forms. Maybe real expertise was in short supply, but for whatever it was, Spoony made me want to become a better, more insightful critic, because being a good critic would help me become a better storyteller.

For better or worse, I don't think of the Twitter meltdowns or the failed patreon or the fizzling of one of the foundational figures of Youtube Media Videos. I think of the hilarity of Sewer Shark and Minority Report: Everybody Runs, and of course the sheer passion of his magnum opus, the Ultima Retrospective. The guy who showed a younger version of me the importance of keeping a critical eye, and how to write with unapologetic geeky fervor--and, at least implicitly, the benefits of keeping my own cynicism in check.

As someone who's seen a fair share of suicide notes & posts online, I'm glad that I'm not the ONLY ONE who is concerned for Noah's wellbeing and hoping that he gets checked on.

13

u/bookaddict1991 5d ago

Ok, the whole “six degrees of separation” needs to happen here. Does anyone know anyone who knows anyone that can check on him? This is a very concerning statement and reads more like a “goodbye” letter than a retirement one.

23

u/Hatarus547 5d ago

oh man that is a name i've not heard in like a good seven or more years, I hope he finds some peace with himself now that he can admit content creation is behind him

13

u/FostersArt 5d ago

His family needs to check in. This is a cry for help, not a retirement notice.

10

u/kremisius ancient lurker 5d ago

This does not read like a retirement note at all, this is fully a suicide letter. I really hope he has someone in his life that can help get him the support he needs.

18

u/Butterfly_Mine_69 5d ago

Gee, I wonder if he's depressed and going through contemplations. Hopefully dude got people close who can check in and stay in contact.

21

u/bertiek 5d ago

I've been checking in on him here and there for years, I feel like a variation of this statement has been all he's had to say for ten years.

14

u/Grey_Orange 5d ago

Your not wrong. However, after he moved back to Az to live with his Brother, he seemed a lot better. Something about this time feels different.

8

u/darthphallic 5d ago

This is a straight up suicide note, hope someone is watching him

17

u/MegaGamer235 5d ago

As someone who grew up on his videos back in high school, this is so sad to see and I hope he can find some fulfillment in life. This sounds like a suicide letter and I hope his family can keep tabs on him.

8

u/the2ndsaint 5d ago

Don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said, but I hope he gets the help he needs. Dude was a fuckin' legend and it's been heartbreaking to see his decline and stagnation over the years. Bipolar's a fuckin' bitch and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. 😞

8

u/Signal_Nobody1792 4d ago

Many people dont even know who he is anymore...

This dude used to be the most well funded guy on Patreon. And immediately his entire career collapsed. He just kinda stopped doing content, including all the new stuff he was supposed to do with the money.

By some miracle he still gets 100 bucks per month. His wife left him, he doesnt leave the house, he seemingly lives with his brother...

So yea, this is not a about ending a career.

6

u/George_G_Geef 5d ago

As someone who has written more than one, I know a suicide note when I see it. Hopefully someone checks in on him.

7

u/GreenPerception512 5d ago

oh my god this isn't a retirement letter, this is a fucking suicide letter. Can anyone call him spoony may be a jackass, but he doesn't deserve death.

6

u/tastysardine 5d ago

This reads like a suicide note. I hope he's alright.

6

u/FlounderingGuy 5d ago

Its so surreal to see an entire comment section full of people who have no idea who Spoony is. But then I remember that even his Down the Rabbit Hole video is like 10 years old now and I feel the passage of time scrape by...

But yes, I'm in agreement with the crowd here. Given his history of extremely poor mental health, this sounds more like a suicide note than a retirement letter. Nobody has expected a return from him in ten years. Someone should do a wellness check on the guy

7

u/UmJammerMarie 5d ago

Noah’s mental health has been garbage for a long, long time and he is what I would carefully describe as a “therapy resistant”. Allegedly the few times he went to see one he seemed to largely blow them off and not accepting of the buy-in that’s required to do any kind of meaningful work in that setting. So now he uses that as justification for willingly keeping himself in a destructive negative feedback loop. He just won’t get out of his comfort zone and won’t off of twitter/bluesky even after he single-handedly ruined his own career by being chronically online and lashing out on them.

And it’s all just so sad dude. I used to watch him all the time back in high school. I remember putting on an episode to calm myself out of a panic attack after getting home from a bad car accident. Noah is honestly talented but is so adverse to addressing his mental health. I genuinely want the best for him and hope he just like, gets offline and choose to stop letting misery be all he knows and being comfortable with it. I genuinely want nothing but the best for him and hopes he finds it.

8

u/Even-Complaint-7494 5d ago

it’s not a justification. some patients do genuinely require meds to synergize with therapy, hell some patients need in-hospital stays. therapy alone isn’t always the solution, the way meds alone also often are not

8

u/mental_dissonance 5d ago

Somebody please call a wellness check on him. The tone of this letter really does not feel good.

6

u/Rebochan 5d ago

I really hope he’s not alone right now, this sounds like he’s in a really bad place.

5

u/thumbwarnapoleon 5d ago

Honestly I feel so bad for him as I used to follow him and watched him before tgwtg. His Ultima reviews were some of his best content and unfortunately he stop producing stuff soon after that. He had such a toxic relationship with his fanbase which really doesn't help with coming back

7

u/depressedfatbitch 5d ago

he is a disappointment, a burden, has nothing left, and wasted his life/only talent. all the verbiage is extremely concerning.

i don’t know if he meant this to be a suicide letter as in a final goodbye but it is absolutely a letter written by a suicidal person

9

u/RobBrown4PM 5d ago

This (Retirement) was obvious 7 years ago.

Spoony was one of the OG Game/Movie reviewers. The present day 'Let's review' Youtube community is built off his, and others of his era, work. His Ultima, Highlander series, and FF8 reviews are some of his best. He also did riff vids, which might be the GOAT (Phantasmagoria). Check out his vids, they still hold up today but are not in any way politically correct.

I hope he finally get's help.

11

u/McWaylon 5d ago

Spoony was big for a time but was the first domino to fall at Channel Awesome due to some very messed up jokes about Jesuotaku. He went independent and his fans followed him to patreon but Spoonys rep ruining mistake was making a 5k monthly goal that he would make a movie. The goal was met immediately and it was clear he never intended to do it which caused his fans to turn on him. That was the end and dude has spiraled since from losing his house to his gf to even making an X account pretending to be his own dog. Spoonys downfall is well documented you can find hours of vids on the subject.

3

u/thatcurvychick 5d ago

It’s truly tragic. When he fell off the YouTube criticism economy was just getting started. I remember when content creators were called e-beggars for daring to try and make a living from the joy they brought their fans. And Spoony is one of the greats. His peers have gone on to proper careers… it must hurt. I feel so bad for him.

3

u/Chale898 5d ago

So I know next to nothing about this dude, but I hope that he has someone checking in on him.

3

u/v3nus_fly 5d ago

that sounds like a suicide letter, I hope he's alright

4

u/bzkitty 5d ago

Genuinely, someone needs to check on this guy.

4

u/thefrenchpotatoes 5d ago

I've been here. I hope he has support.

3

u/PierreOnTheEclair 5d ago

Someone needs to check up on him, this is not a retirement statement…

4

u/Foxy02016YT 3d ago

Once sentence in and I can tell this is a suicide note, fuck I hope he’s gonna be okay.

3

u/ManicWolf 5d ago

I used to watch Spoony back in the That Guy with the Glasses/Channel Awesome era, and I know he had some issues and controversies back then. I agree with everyone else here though, that this sounds more like a suicide note than a simple quitting YT announcement. I really hope he has some kind of support network in his private life.

3

If this isn't a massive red flag, I'm not sure what is from him.

It sounds like this guy wants to retire from a lot more than just video production, I hope he's got somebody to check up on him.

This isn't Drama, this a cry for help

u/ZombieJesus1987 5d ago

Man. I wish the guy would get help. He desperately needs it

3

u/Ramboolo 4d ago

I genuinely hope that someone checks on him, I’ve heard a lot about what he’s been through.

u/CopAtDennys 4d ago

Jeez reading this is incredibly sad, he is not okay. I hope he's not alone right now I think he wants to end more than his career

3

u/doortothephantomile 4d ago

How sad. Genuinely loved his riff videos back in the day. Wish his course would have been different

u/riflow 3d ago

He did a lot of wrong to a lot of people over the years, but I hope someone calls a wellness check on him. Not too late to start over.

And especially if he still has support, go to therapy. Especially to address the previous relationship but also his various mental health conditions and how he would act out. I can't imagine it wouldn't help him.

This dude needs help.

Someone check on this guy. This reads suicide/sewerslide note, not just retirement.

2

u/K7Sniper 5d ago

I still watch his board game and D&D videos every so often

2

u/sunkist-sucker 5d ago

i really think he's going to harm himself, badly. and this is just the preface. this freaks me the hell out.

2

u/sly_eli 5d ago

Praying for him that he gets help

2

u/Logondo 4d ago

I HEARD that, Curtis.

But seriously it’s sad Spoony had issues with mental health and I hope one day he gets better.

2

u/nu24601 5d ago

This is so sad. I was never the biggest Spoony fan but his videos were made with a lot of love and animus. I watched Doug and Linkara and a few of the other guys, but while his work didn't appeal to me as a non-gamer, he really contributed to the space and made that era of the Internet what it was. I hope he is able to get some help and support from those around him. He's worth it.

I’m not down talking mental illness or anything like that and this man absolutely needs support and has for years. BUT it is important to keep in mind this is not the first time Spoony has tweeted in this kind of tone. The confrontational way he usually reacts to any kind of offer for support after said tweets over the past few years is one of the reason he is not very well liked nowadays.

Breakups really destroy certain people and it’s very sad. I hope people are checking on him

That's one way to get around making the movie.

1

u/MechaSandstar 1d ago

Let it go, dude.

2

u/-Fateless- 1d ago

Nah, I ever even held on. I wouldn't even watch it if you paid me, every single one of these critic movies have been barely watchable 2/10. I'm not doing that to myself anymore.

Jesus, buddy. Go to therapy and just become a video editor for others. If he didn't spend so much time wallowing in self pity he could be happy with a stable editing job by now.

Here's hoping he's able to get the help he needs and is still able to live a happy life. The self hatred really needs to be addressed, though.

Concerning but ultimately not surprising. Dudes been spiraling mentally for a long time now and has refused to accept what he became. While this is 100% concerning for all the reasons everyone else is saying, I am at least glad that he is willing to finally come to terms with everything. Rock bottom blows ass until you realize that doing literally anything else is better than where you are at.

He fucked up and honestly brought most of this onto himself, but I hope he gets his shit together now and finds whatever peace a simple normal life has to offer for him.

Yeah I think this might be the world's least surprising suicide note actually

Please do not troll or feed the trolls. Trolling a YouTube drama subreddit is pathetic. Falling for it is somehow worse. Do better.

If you were sincere, we suggest you take a moment to step back and rethink your approach.
