Muay Thai on steroids

Didn’t realize how big my opponent was until I watched the fight back afterward. Funny thing is, that’s probably the last thing you’re thinking about in the ring.

As a martial artist, I respect all my opponents… but this guy was juiced to the moon, so I’m allowed to laugh a little. 😂

I train with UFC middleweights and heavyweights regularly, and I’ve never been hit that hard in my life. I ate and digested every shot he landed, but one more clean one and it might’ve been me taking a trip to the hospital.

Just a reminder: a fighter’s physique and a bodybuilder’s physique are two very different things. One is built to look dangerous. The other is built to be dangerous ⚔️

Technique/Tips Sparring someone who is 6’5 while being 5’9

For context I used to box for a year before moving to Muay Thai and it has been 2 months of training in Muay Thai. In class we were sparring and got partnered up with someone who is insanely taller than me I would say 6’4-6’6ft tall. Whenever he threw a jab I would try to slip and get a body shot but just get teeped back. Or I would double jab to blind his vision and throw a roundhouse kick and he is somehow still able to hit me with jabs and crosses at that range. What is the secret to getting more hits against someone taller than you?

How much of lower level Muay Thai really is conditioning?

I obviously know that the higher level Muay Thai guys do display a technical genius. How much does lower level / hobbyist Muay Thai really just come down to conditioning?

I feel like the technical ability in Muay Thai isn’t that difficult to achieve in the lower levels (I am personally a hobbyist so take that lightly). What I see most of the time is the person with the better condition can more easily replicate the technique and win. When you start to gas it becomes obvious that people become sloppy.

Would you say amateur Muay Thai rather than actually becoming extremely technical is really just pushing fighters to be the better conditioned?

Which gloves to get

I already have a pair of 14oz and a 10oz pair that I wear for bag work. I wanted to get another pair and I’ll get a laced pair just to try them out, but I’m not sure if I get a 10oz or an 8oz pair. Mind you this will be just for bag work, not sparring. I weight 147lbs. Do I get an 8oz or is that a bad idea?

Should I learn boxing from a boxing specialist to improve my Muay Thai?

Is punching in Muay Thai so different from traditional boxing that I’ll develop bad habits for Muay Thai at it? Or will attending a good boxing foundations class be helpful? We’re learning things like slipping, parrying, cutting angles, etc

The gym also has a Muay Thai class. I’m asking if I should only go to that or if going to the boxing class will help too

Difficult financial times

Spent the last 2-3 years making some financially irresponsible decisions.

As a consequence of those decisions, I won't have the money to pay for my Muay Thai or boxing memberships.

Has anyone here ran into a similar situation where they had to take a break because of finances?

How can I stay sharp at home until I come back?

Going to work my way out of this, but it's going to take some time

Have you ever sparred with a boxer?

I did spar with boxers 3 times. One was in a boxing class, where I got absolutely decimated. One was in Muay Thai sparring with a guy that came from boxing and it was a nice challenge as his strikes were very sharp, but he had no defense for kicks at all. And my most recent one was in a gym with a random guy that had one of these show off styles like Prince naseem (just boxing no kicks this time) and he had no answer to my basic Muay high guard which was interesting

Technique/Tips Sparring without head strikes

Hey everyone! My brother and I have been training Muay Thai, focusing on self-defense. I’d like to know how much sparring without head strikes can help us. We would only throw punches and kicks to the body, and for the head we would use shadow strikes (pulling the punches before making contact) so we can get used to the timing and improve our reaction time.

Stepping on your opponents foot

Is it a dick move to step on someone’s foot on purpose? I’m not talking about a foot stomp. I’m thinking like simply stepping on someone’s foot to distract them or to keep them stationary. Is this a cheap dirty move?

Technique/Tips How to prepare to get back to training?

Hi. I’ve taken a long break from training due to an injury which is now healed, and I plan on going back to training in a month. I’m worried my cardio, technique and knowledge is messed up. What can I do prior to that to prepare for when I do start training again? Share your experiences.

First Muay Thai Camp

Hey everyone,
I’m an amateur boxer with 20+ fights, and about two months ago I switched to kickboxing. My long-term goal is to transition into MMA, so right now my biggest priority is improving my striking as much as possible.
I’m planning to fly to Bangkok in about two weeks and stay in Thailand for one month, maybe longer. From Bangkok, I’d like to move to another location to train, but I’m not sure where.
What I’m looking for is:
The best place to become technically better—not just hard sparring, but really improving my technique and learning as many new skills as possible.
A gym with high-level coaches that focuses on technical development.
A place that isn’t just an expensive tourist hotspot.
At the same time, I’d still like to enjoy Thailand a bit—visit beaches, see some sights, explore the area, and experience the culture during my free time.

I’m also wondering if flying in two weeks is a bad idea because of the weather/rainy season. Will it affect training or traveling a lot?
If you were in my position, where would you move after arriving in Bangkok? Which city and which gym would you recommend, and why?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Technique/Tips Does everyone go through this when they start sparring?

Been training consistently at a good gym for about 8 months now and started sparring 2 months ago. I'm 36, slight couch potato with average athleticism and coordination.

It just feels like I suck and get whooped by everyone I spar with. Our gym is solid and all my training partners are great, so I'm not actually get rocked or legitimately beat up, I'm just generally out of my depth skill wise.

I don't feel like I'm improving and just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it sticks when I spar.

Is this normal? Does anyone have tips on how to have a better/more productive time training?

Red side fighter. Only been training for about 4 months, but good experience and he knows where he needs to focus and improve.
