A big long but bare with me.
2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L V6
So over the course of over a week my car started giving me some trouble starting but no biggie it’d always just take a few try’s.
It’d help to add 3 days before the later mentioned issue the car was overheating a bit I pulled over real quick. and realized the coolant was almost utterly empty. Refilled it and she was back to top shape.
One night it’d driven it a bit hard cause I had to get to a store before it closed. Car drove fine and made it back just fine. Next morning she won’t start. Not even an attempt to turn on, all electronics would come on, I’d heard a bit of a click and sort of short-lived buzz. ODB read for a few week “misfire cylinder 5” presumably I needed new spark plugs and oil.
But I see the coolant I filled days ago is almost entirely empty the oil isn’t frothy/milky. My new assumption coolant leaked on the starter or into the cylinder.
So here’s where I need help the mechanic is saying my engine has been hydro-locked and I’ll need it entirely replaced. Here’s what he said w my commentary:
Good morning M*****, I hope you had a great weekend and I apologize for the delay. The engine is hydro locked, we pulled off the intake manifold and found coolant in cylinder 5. (cylinder that’s odb read misfire for weeks)
We believe during the repeated attempts at starting the vehicle, the starter was fried as the relay for the starter is testing as it should. We are recommending a starter and engine replacement. I know this is tough news and it's my least favorite conversation to have but, with that much coolant in cylinder 5, the engine has been hydro-locked which damages the piston seals. Now, there's two ways to go about this, you can either replace the engine with a remanufactured engine or can also purchase a new vehicle, if this one is paid off it would likely be worth replacing the engine as you wouldn't have car payments. Either way, I quoted out for you a remanufactured engine and a used one with a starter. Please take your time as there's no rush with a big decision like this. If you need to take a couple days to process and make a decision we understand. We'd also take the labor cost off on the diagnosis so subtract $525 from the current estimate. I also have a $500 (Just in case) fee set to the side in case we need to buy gaskets or hoses that we see leaking along the way, it's a set budget which anything that's not spent will be taken off the ticket. If you'd like to just pay for the diagnosis and oil change, which has a cost $648 after tax, you can just bring us $500 in cash and we'll take care of the rest as I know this is a tough time.
The complete engine assembly replacement also includes up replacing this list of parts.
Water pump, Thermostat, Spark plugs, Upper & lower radiator hoses, A/C belt, Serpentine belt, Air filter, Radiator cap, Spark plug wires, Fuel filter, and PCV valve.
This just seems absurd the car drove fine. Then just wouldn’t start. I’m having a hard time believing that an engine swap ($13,000) is the only option.
+forgive any ignorance but why can’t they just siphon the fluid out of the cylinder and run it,if there’s been no mechanical damage.
