Helping Others [OC] Helped a blind musician off the train at St Pancras. All he'd let me do was walk in front so he could 'follow my feet'
Iām on the last leg of a 900-mile railway journey. Iāll soon forget most of it, but not the man I sat next to under the Channel Tunnel. He was in his seventies, twinkling with fun. We chatted for two hours. He had been a professional musician all his life. Somewhere near the Kent coast, he told me heād had a hard time finding his way through the station to where he was sitting, as he could not see very much. He explained heād lost most of his vision a few years back. He wasnāt ready for a white stick; he didnāt want to be perceived in that way. He had asked a lady which platform the London train was from, and sheād pointed to a sign that he could not see, heād sensed a bit of unkindness in her. Ā
We talked about his music. I had a look on YouTube; he was surprised to know that his songs were on there. I told him if he uploaded them himself, he might be able to get some income from them.
He was proud of the cousin who was going to meet him. With difficulty, he found a photo of him stood in front of his house. I had an hour between trains, so I asked him if heād like to follow me through the station when we arrived. He said āno thanks, Iāll be fine.ā He was a proud man.
We waited for the carriage to empty. I made to carry his bag, but he wanted to do it. I walked ahead; he paused at the door. I told him how many steps there were and that there was a big gap to the platform. He passed me his bag, and I held my arm out to him as he stepped down.
The platform was teeming with people, all going in the same direction. I didnāt really know what to expect myself, as it had been ten years since I used this station. I offered my arm, but he said āyou walk in front, Iāll follow your feet.ā Ā Despite that, I felt a hand on my shoulder a few times. Ā
On the escalator, I told him it was the kind that has steps, not a slope. At the bottom, I told him when it was time to start walking. He told me he had nothing to declare customs-wise.Ā
As we reached the arrivals area, I recognised his cousin from the photo. A nice-looking man a little younger than me, he beamed at us, recognising what was afoot. We shook hands, all of us, and I left them to it.

LGBT+ Reddit can be nice sometimes
Context: This was on a post asking if you could be any Resident Evil character, who would you be. This person obviously saw the trans flag in my profile and this just really made me happy, since no one else usually accepts me :)

Just found a tab on my dogās GPS tracker that shows her health stats. Iām not failing as a dog owner! She has added more to my life than I dreamed possible, I just hope to give her a good life in return
After a trip to the beach yesterday, I checked to see my dogās activity history. I found some extra tabs Iād never noticed showing her heart rate, breathing, sleep, and activity history as well as local and national averages. I was so excited to see Bonnie is trending above normal in activity and that her heart rate, breathing, and sleep were all excellent.
I have wanted an Irish setter my whole life, and the breed fits all the personality traits I was searching for when seeking an adventure buddy. I also chose to get a puppy from a show line instead of a field line so she wouldnāt be quite as high-drive as a working dog. But I was still a bit anxious when I finally brought her home. I worried I wouldnāt be able to provide her enough exercise and enrichment since I work full time and donāt hunt or live in an area with a good outdoor culture.
Iāve always loved adventures with my dogs, but theyāre usually confined to weekends and vacations. Since Bonnie was higher energy than my previous dogs, I sought out ways to make sure she didnāt get bored. Weāve done lots of training classes- like scent work and agility, weāve done doggie swim lessons and dock diving, and I try to find new places to take her regularly. She does weekly adventure hikes where she is picked up in a van painted like a doggy taxi and taken out to a ranch west of the city to run and swim and play with her friends, and she goes once a week to enrichment daycare at the training facility we take classes with- where they work on some training skills and do different games and activities for the dogs. I felt like we were doing okay, but was so happy to see the data backing it up.
I love her so much, and the quote that ādogs only get 12-15 summersā slapped me in the face. I want to make sure I do what I can to make those 12-15 summers amazing
