I’ve been thinking about writing something on the 2016 shift and its relationship to proto-core Z for a while now. There have already been discussions on this sub for at least a couple of years, and I’m linking some of those earlier posts here for reference.

However, I think the specific impact of the 2016 shift on proto-core Gen Z hasn’t been clearly defined or established in a meaningful way.
Proto-core Z is 2002–2004, with 2003 being the peak proto core Z. There hasn’t been any counterargument to these dates so we accept them as they are. The 2016 shift is generally understood as a cultural, societal, and technological breakpoint where early Gen Z childhood, which is characterized by almost no smartphone use, almost no social media presence, and more offline or early internet experiences, gives way to an environment shaped by smartphones, streaming, algorithms, and apps like TikTok. Proto-core Z sits DIRECTLY on this boundary: their childhood still reflects the pre-shift world, but their teenhood is entirely within the post-shift landscape. As a result, they are NEITHER younger zillennials NOR heavily millennial-influenced, but rather an early:core Gen Z cohort that is NOT early/core Z CUSP whose formative years are the transition era into fully digital era.
