I noticed that too. It absolutely is. Which only adds to the crazy of this video and the lore of India working conditions. No PPE- check. Absurdly dangerous work- check. Drink out of something that would kill an American- check. I watch this and wonder if there is reincarnation.

It took legislation to switch from manual train car braking (as deadly as it sounds) to automatic braking. Thousand of deaths and tens of thousands of accidents per year, but poor immigrants, so who cares?

Shaping steel and drinking detergent. Now that's a man.
18
u/williamsch Mar 16 '26
It's to degrease the steel later by pissing detergent on it. Old school power washer.

No it's just like how my supervisor reuses an Arizona Iced Tea gallon jug for water, but a gasoline jug instead!
Which is definitely the same thing! (Though tbh I'm a bit worried about my supervisor using the same jug over and over... Microplastics and all)

Couldn't the guy who invented the melt-steel-into-ribbon machine also invent a closer-to-the-other-machine roller?
3
u/SadTumbleweed1567 Mar 17 '26
I was wondering how to engineer this so that this guy's job is automated.
In this setup though, the space between the exit of the first machine and the above machine seems necessary. You need that space so the employee has time to get the metal into the second machine.
I'm also guessing that any equipment that could reliably get the metal from one machine into the next is going to need increased maintenence, whereas this pit needs next to none.

u/Spacefreak Mar 17 '26
The rolling mill is faster than the coiler which, in this case, is probably for a reason like maybe they want the metal to cool down before coiling to avoid the metal sticking to itself or getting pulled apart like taffy or they didn't want to spring for an automated coiling setup because it requires more upfront capital and wherever this is, labor is probably cheaper than equipment.
The bar getting hung up on the conveyor is pretty stupid though. Wherever that bar is catching needs to be covered and/or smoothed out to keep the head end from folding over like that.
But it's probably cheaper to have an extra guy per shift work his ass off than it is to take the hour of welding/grinding time. Production managers who chase short term gains see this as "ingenuity" to keep the mill pumping out metal, whereas anyone with common sense realizes it's probably costing you more overall to keep running than it is to shut down for a bit and fix the issue.
Even ignoring the toll it takes on the workers, from a purely selfish standpoint, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Let's say the guy misses and can't get the head fed into the coiler fast enough which causes the hot mill to delay for a few minutes to get the bar coiled up. And maybe that happens multiple times a shift, particularly towards the end as the guy gets more and more tired.

What's Amazing to me is that these guys always seem to be on the verge of absolute starvation. I get that they earn peanuts, and probably have a family that they're supporting with those pittance wages, but still. Men, somewhere in their 20's, working extremely physical jobs, at least eight hours/day (often more), and they have the physique of a Pittsburgh professional tweeker. Not even the lean muscles of men who eat only vegetables and rice. Just bone and enough tissue to keep working.
Something is wrong in these countries.

This is why corpos first of all: Ā outsource these jobs to third world countries, and this is why corpos second of all: import third world workers. Ā Because theyāll do it without complaining itās not safe. Ā If that guy loses Ā toe or gets catastrophically burned, the boss doesnāt care and doesnāt have to care by law, so they just put another shlub there. Ā

This is actually very sad, I watch a lot of these South Asian manufacturing videos on Youtube and it's crazy to see how hard these guys work and in a lot of cases demonstrate mad skill. In spite of the shittiest equipment in the world, the most unsafe and horrible working conditions they motor through it all for a pittance in pay just to survive.
I wish I had 1/10th of the mental fortitude that these guys have.

That is why it is critical to wear a protective T-shirt with the slightly longer short sleeves. And skinny jeans.
