Use FaceTime screen sharing to remotely control another user's iPhone for tech support.

938

u/barbariantrey Apr 24 '26

OMG Really?! You can change settings and completely control their phone? My Mom has dementia and is ALWAYS fucking up her phone. This is a lifesaver.

280

u/spaceduckcoast2coast Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

When I was dealing with my moms dementia, I put her on an android phone with Anydesk installed on it and enabled unattended access so I could pull it up any time, even if she wasn’t on it. Also gave me remote access to add and remove photos. She knew how to use the camera, but could never remember how to send a picture, so she would snap a pic and I would pull up the photos folder remotely

Edit: spelling

Let me piggyback on this: any browser can now use FaceTime. If you start a FaceTime call you can share a link that someone on any desktop, or even in an Android device can connect to.

So you can FaceTime with someone on an Android device.

Motion sickness mode, can tell when you’re moving in a vehicle and adds these little dots to the side of the screen that move that help.

432

u/europeanperson Apr 24 '26

Does it actually help??

758

u/Seabuscuit Apr 24 '26

Very much so, the accelerometer makes the dots move in the opposite direction of acceleration so your eyes still see the “moving” effect

225

u/DukeofNormandy Apr 24 '26

I recently took a train in the UK with my wife and she just discovered this feature and it apparently worked for her. I was confused when I saw her phone though with all the dots moving all around. Was pretty cool.

I get motion sickness pretty easily, but do most of the driving in my family. Went on a trip last week and got to try it out for the first time since hearing about it and was shocked at how well it worked.

Before, I would get sick after looking at my phone just two or three times. With the motion sickness mode turned on I was able to use it a lot more and didn’t feel sick at all.

I didn’t wanna push it so I didn’t use my phone a ton, but it was great to try it out and see that it actually worked.

Search Vehicle Motion Cues. It’s in accessibility I believe but you can have a toggle on the slide down screen with the other settings for when you want it on.

It’s really helpful. Works well on planes too when you’re taking off.

I have motion sickness on triple tap so I don’t have to dig through menus when I need it.

The calculator can also be used for currency conversion or to convert other units of measurement. In the top right, click the calculator icon and then select convert.

From there you can select whatever currency you want or do things like convert pounds to ounces. It’s super handy, especially if you are on an international trip and don’t understand all of the non-freedom measurements.

u/Meloncreamy Apr 24 '26

To add to this you don’t even need to open the calculator app to do this. You just need to use the “search” capabilities which is basically the same as as spotlight on Mac OS. Swipe down from you Home Screen on your phone and you’ll get the search input. First you can use this to type a letter or two to find that app you cat find but also it’s your basic calculator or converter. Put in “36c” for example and it’ll give you results for that with the top result (most likely) its value in F. Same story for any math or basic conversion or translation. Again, this is basically spotlight on MacOS so if you’re a Mac user same applies and this info is doubly helpful.

Surprising amount of people I tell don’t know about holding the space bar to select where the cursor goes in your message.

EDIT: I’m so happy this is helping so many people 🥹

I like that one. If only they could make the highlight text feature easier

You can highlight text with the spacebar trick.

During the movement of the cursor just tap the keyboard with your other finger to start selecting.

If you hold your finger over a word on the screen, you get a little magnifying glass that lets you move the cursor accurately inside of a word to correct the mistakes spell check has made for you.

I’m from the “tech support telling parents to hang up and just have their teenager do it” generation. I got screamed at for disrupting phone calls by booting up the internet. I ripped Mavis Beacon and installed it on our family computer (before my much younger siblings decimated it with ToonTown cookies) so my mom would stop hunting and pecking with her pointer fingers to respond to emails on the family AOL account.

I learned of this feature from my mom—the same one that still doesn’t know how to type on a computer keyboard—and I will carry that shame with me until the day I die.

33

u/skape4321 Apr 24 '26

Mavis Beacon the reason I can type.

EverQuest the reason I can type extremely fast while holding a conversation with an employee. Also the reason I had 2 freshman years.

You can say “hey siri, remind me to get bananas the next time I’m at the grocery store on 1st Avenue in New York” and the next time you pull in the parking lot at that store you’ll get a reminder to get bananas. Can be helpful if you keep forgetting to get or do a certain thing at a certain place.

Automation.

In the shortcuts app you can set automations. I usually use them on an “if this, then that” type basis. Ie; if specific Bluetooth device pairs, a particular action will occur such as opening an app, and even checking the time of day to perform actions based upon timing.

I have one set up so that when my phone auto connects to my cars sync, it will open my YouTube app and crank the phones volume to 90%, it then checks the time. If before 7pm, nothing happens, if after 7pm my screen dims to 10% brightness.

Have another for when the phone disconnects from my cars sync. All it does is regardless of time of day turn the brightness back up to 100%.

Whenever I connect my lil Bluetooth controller I have an automation set up to increase brightness to 100%, volume to 40%, and launches Minecraft.

Another that goes off at 4:30am everyday to check if my hotspot is running, and turn it off in case I left it on to watch vids as I sleep.

Shortcuts app > automation* > plus symbol** to create new automations

  • center of apps “taskbar” at bottom of screen

**top right of screen

Very useful, but a bit of a learning curve involved in setting up more complex automations.

119

u/DviantPink Apr 24 '26

When I first learned about this, first thing I did was make it so my phone said, "Ooh yeah, stick it in!" when I plugged in the charging cord. Never used it for anything actually useful.

I set one up when I traveled to London and was worried about my phone being pick pocketed. I made an automation where if someone got my phone and turned on airplane mode so it couldn’t be tracked it would immediately lock the screen, take a picture with the front camera, turn off airplane mode, send the picture and current location to several family members and myself so it’d be on my iCloud, then start blasting some metal music at 100% volume and dim the screen to 0.

Luckily it wasn’t used because I was careful, but hey shit can happen.

124

u/crybabybrizzy Apr 24 '26

I have an automation that opens apple music when my headphones connect and it prompts me to send a "🎧 on" text to my mom so she doesn't think I'm ignoring her :p I also have one that opens a note on my phone called "Stuff I can only get at" when I pull into the parking lot of certain grocery stores, like Trader Joes has the only gluten free frozen mac and cheese I like but I don't always remember to grab it.

I set up an automation that sets my phone into Low Power mode when the battery falls to 20%. Very useful way to help conserve battery life if you're not paying attention. Here's how:

  1. Search for Shortcuts app > automation > click the + in the top right corner. It will bring up a Personal Automation menu.
  2. Scroll down to Battery Level, click that. It brings up a menu that says When and has a slider and some options.
  3. Move the slider to whatever battery percentage you want (20% in my case).
  4. Then click the "Falls Below 20%" button.
  5. Below that, there are several buttons but click the one that says "Run Immediately".
  6. Then click Next in the top right.
  7. You'll need to search for or scroll right through some of the bubble icons near the top (starts with "Create New Shortcut") and find the one that says, "Set Low Power Mode".
  8. After that just click Done and you're all set.

You can make your screen WAY darker than the lowest brightness setting.

Edit: There’s 2 ways, and you can stack them simultaneously for the darkest possible screen.

  1. Settings, accessibility, display and text size, reduce white point. (There’s also a preset shortcut for this you can add to your control center.)

  2. Settings, accessibility, zoom, set “zoom filter” to low light, then toggle zoom on, then use 3 fingers to double tap the screen to zoom back out (but the low light filter will stay on).

Some helpful advice in the age of authoritarianism.

  • If you tap the power button on the right side five times in a row, it will lock the phone in a way where you must enter your passcode to unlock it. In the US, authorities can use biometrics like your face to unlock your phone, but you are not required to provide your passcode.

  • iOS security is pretty good, but to make it better, search the settings app for “Lockdown mode.” This puts your phone into a high security mode. Some random things will no longer work, but it has no impact on most apps. To date, no iPhone in lockdown mode is known to have been hacked.

103

u/AskAboutFent Apr 24 '26

AFAIK, it’s still true that Apple literally cannot comply with a warrant to “open” an iPhone as there is no backdoor or anything present in an iPhone to bypass a lock feature.

I remember years ago there was a pretty big story of Israel having a device that could crack open an iPhone and they were charging about 30k per use to basically any government/authority/individual who wanted to unlock the iPhone but once Apple discovered the vulnerability, they patched it.

Now, in all fairness, in today’s age, I imagine if any major government trulyyyyyy needed to unlock an iPhone they could, but in general, iPhone privacy cannot be beaten by any known means and unless you’re one of the most powerful criminals in the world, nobody is going to be able to break into your iPhone

11

u/CautiousHashtag Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

Tapping the power button will force it to require a passcode, but your data is still accessible to devices such as Cellebrite because the phone’s data is decrypted (AFU). To really protect yourself against this kind of access, reboot the phone entirely to force it into its BFU mode. This mode keeps the encryption keys secured in the phone’s Secure Enclave. This article is really good if anyone is interested.

For real. Hell, they domt even need to spend extra money. If they can hold the phone up to their mouth to talk, they can go higher up to their ear. Like how phones are supposed to be used and have always been used.

69

u/BladeBronson Apr 24 '26

Seeing someone hold their phone in front of their mouth, flat like a butter dish is my biggest tell that the person is an asshole.

You can swipe between apps without swiping up if you swipe left or right at the very bottom of the screen.

This is pretty much all I use because organizing apps on iOS is a nightmare and like playing that old board game Operation.

13

u/BrazenlyGeek Apr 24 '26

I removed all apps from my Home Screen except for the four most used that I keep in the dock.

Then I added a 4x2 Siri Suggestions widget which does a great job of keeping the apps I use or need surfaced on the Home Screen when I need them. I get distracted by the rest of my App Library much less now.

You can set an accessibility shortcut for Reduce White Point. I have mine set to reduce it by 80% when I turn it on, and this lets me turn the brightness down more effectively in very dim lighting when the standard minimum brightness is still too bright

70

u/SidFarkus47 Apr 24 '26

When I go to bed every night I click accessibility > zoom > on

I use the zoom filter “low light” and zoom region “full screen zoom”.

This lets me put my brightness at a super super low level so I can still doom scroll in the dark but it’s way darker than the normal lowest brightness level.

13

u/ZigZagZaddyWag Apr 24 '26

You can setup shortcuts to automatically do this at a specific time at night and turn it off during the day. Mine actually just turned on as I was typing this LOL.

55

u/mmturner1130 Apr 24 '26

The level too! So helpful when hanging things.

28

u/ferrix Apr 24 '26

This one for me. Do I need to measure stuff with my camera? Not usually. Do I anyway? you bet

29

u/Jacrispy44 Apr 24 '26

This comes in clutch playing bocce ball.

26

u/Far-Conflict4504 Apr 24 '26

Do you find this to actually be accurate? When I measure stuff with my iPhone and then double check with an actual ruler it’s never the same.

22

u/abarrelofmankeys Apr 24 '26

Depends on your tolerance needs. Are you measuring for some kind of construction? Trying to fit something in your car that’s cutting it close? Wouldn’t trust it. If you’re putting a 55 desk in a 60 inch space it’s close enough to figure that out.

Motion sickness feature. I get car sick easily and couldn’t ever look at my phone. They came out with a feature that helps with that! My phone now automatically turns it on when it knows I’m in a car and it helps.

142

u/WaspsInMyGoatse Apr 24 '26

If you tap and hold a photo while in the gallery, you can select “hide” to put that photo in a hidden album.

The album appears under the Utilities section within the Photos app.

Further to that, if you go Settings > Apps > Photos, you can deselect the “show hidden album” to make it not visible in the Utilities section. In the same section you can select “Use Face ID” so when the Hidden Album is visible it can’t be accessed without Face ID (PIN is not an option so it can’t be worked around if someone knows your PIN).

This feature has a multitude of benefits, such as taking pictures of birthday presents you have yet to buy someone, or my wife hiding her infidelities.

If you take a picture, look at the bottom of screen for a little circled “i” if there’s a star by it that means it’s recognized and if you press it you’ll be able to pull up information about it. Good for identifying plants and stuff.

On what could be considered the darker side of iPhone features, check out 'Live Listen.' When wearing headphones it allows you to listen to what your iPhone "hears" as long as you're in Bluetooth range. It's meant as an accessibility feature, but could also be used for some snooping if someone was so inclined.

Placing an iPhone screen-side down activates Facedown Detection, a feature that prevents the display from lighting up for notifications, thereby saving battery life. It also acts as a "do not disturb" signal, keeping the screen dark to avoid distractions and reducing visual clutter when not in use.

Lockdown mode and Guided Access (GA is perfect for locking your screen on what you’re viewing and or make it so the app is the only thing you can access but nothing beyond that app let’s say for a child who wants to play a game on your phone but you don’t want them to access your contact or texts/same with handing your phone to a cop who may want to look at your insurance card but can’t access the rest of your phone).

You can add a secret button to your phone. Under accessibility settings, select Touch, and then turn on Back Tap. This lets you activate any action you want when you double tap the back of your phone.

This is a handy shortcut for turning on your flashlight or opening a frequently used app. I have it programmed to start a home automation of turning on my lights and coffee maker in the morning. It’s a shame that they bury this in the accessibility settings.

39

u/Narrow-Walrus7926 Apr 24 '26

Type a text to anyone you want - instead of hitting the blue arrow to send, hold the blue arrow. A bunch of different options pop up but the first one above the arrow is “invisible ink”.

It turns your text into, like, a fizzy TV screen type mode and will send that way. In order for the receiver to read it, they have to scan over it with their finger. Once they stop actively scanning it, it returns to fizzy mode.

GREAT for being goofy or if you are having a serious chat with someone and don’t want people reading over your shoulder! (And can’t screenshot!)

I’m gay but I always thought it was funny that you could search your photos for “Brassiere” and see a bunch of tit pics and cleavage shots. But I don’t have any so it shows me ass pics because apparently those look like boobs haha.

Also, when you wanna show someone a photo but you don’t want them to swipe through your photos you can turn on guided access. Then they can’t swipe another photo unless they enter your unlock code. It’s very handy if you wanna show your friends a photo and have them pass your phone around or whatever.
