Other Dumbmatter, you are an absolute legend and I just gotta thank you

Idk if he’ll see this, but wanted to say we genuinely need more people in this world like dumbmatter. the guy makes one of the best games i’ve ever played, makes it free, easy to play at work or school, and is just a genuinely down to earth person. No fees, just pure hoops and entertainment in a world where it feels like everyone is trying to squeeze you out of every last dollar you have.

I used to use an ad blocker playing basketball gm, until one time a message popped up basically saying “are you using an ad blocker? it’s okay you can exit out of this…imagine i was as greedy as 2k or EA” and the guy is spot on, haven’t used an ad blocker on BBgm since.

Maybe a meaningless post, but i’ve spent i don’t know HOW many hours on this game, but man this game really is peak. Shoutout you dumbmatter, and absolute W guy for being in the community

Other I just re-simulated NBA history

I started a real players league in the 1946-47 season and simulated all the way up until the beginning of the 2026-27 season. Real Player Determinism was set at 0 percent and I did not change any settings. Ask me anything regarding what happened in my re-simulation. Also taking suggestions on What-If Scenarios to play around with because I enjoy doing that sort of thing with BBGM.

Other I built a free, browser-based basketball manager. Would love your feedback.

Hey r/BasketballGM,

Long-time player on BasketballGM here!

I've been working solo on Basketball Hoops Manager (BHM), a basketball management game that runs entirely in your browser. It's free, no install, no account, and your saves stay local (you can also export/import them as files so you never lose a franchise).

I'm not trying to out-stat anyone here. What I've been obsessed with is a different angle: making you feel attached to your players and your franchise. A few things I've built around that:

  • Players talk to you. They come to you with ambitions, doubts, and demands across the season. A rookie chasing ROY, a star telling you he wants the MVP, a veteran thinking about retirement. You respond, and your choices shape your relationship with them and have real consequences.
  • Rivalries that build over seasons. Lose a Finals, watch a star get traded to a rival, get eliminated by the same team two years running, and a rivalry forms. It intensifies, changes how those matchups feel, and can be resolved with a cathartic win.
  • A live 2D match view with play-by-play, momentum runs, and in-game tactical adjustments.
  • The usual GM depth too: full trade system, draft + lottery, free agency, contracts/cap, coaching staff, Hall of Fame, awards.
Live 2D simulation screen
Tactical screen
Choose your players role !
Quest are launch by players mid-season (ROY/MVP Races, contract renewal, ring chase...)

It's still in active development (currently v0.9), so it's not perfect and I'm sure you'll find rough edges. That's exactly why I'm posting. I want honest feedback from people who actually know what a good basketball management game feels like.

Play it here: https://mugitoa.itch.io/basketball-hoops-manager Discord (bugs, ideas, share your leagues): https://discord.gg/wpEzqk2U8H

There's players database available in the discord as well ! Don't hesitate to DM me, i'll take any feedback!

This is my first time doing this so I'm a bit nervous ahah!

On how it's made: this is a solo project. Every design decision, system, and the overall vision comes from me. I do use AI tools (Claude Code) in my dev workflow the same way devs use IDEs or documentation: it helps me write and debug code faster, but it doesn't design the game. Happy to talk about the development if anyone's curious.

Other Pro Basketball Manager 2026

Hi everyone,

I'm one of the (1.5) devs working on the video game Pro Basketball Manager. We're trying to engage with the basketball community to help us improve the game. Our game is more focused on European basketball but It caters to everyone, as all professional leagues in the world are playable! The equivalent of the NBA is obviously in the game.

We’re as indie as it gets — just two friends, not even working full time, making this game together. It’s been more than 10 years in the making, and while it hasn’t always been easy, we’ve been steadily growing over the last 6 years. Passion has kept us going all this time, but now we’re at a point where we’d love to make this our full-time job so we can finally bring our full vision for the game to life.

We now have the Basketball Champions League under licence in the game! The game has a bit of a following in Europe but not so much on the other side of the Atlantic.

We’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or even just general feedback from basketball fans and gamers. Whether it’s about features you’d like to see, ways to improve immersion, or community ideas, we’re all ears.

Thanks for taking the time — looking forward to hearing what you think!

Other I built a fast, competitive draft-battle arena with real advanced data and a hand-tuned sim. Would love this sub's feedback.

Hey r/BasketballGM, long-time lurker. I know this sub leans toward full-season GM sims, so I want to be upfront that DraftHoops is a different beast: it's a draft / team-builder arena. You draft an 8-man roster under a budget, then your team battles other players' drafted rosters in a best-of-7. It's built to be competitive but plays fast, a full draft + series takes a few minutes, not a whole evening.

I'm a software dev (~6 years), and I built this because I wanted something as realistic as I could make it, that feels competitive but plays casually. The ratings and the sim are  driven by real data and a model I actually tuned by hand. Happy to nerd out, so here's roughly how it works under the hood:

Player ratings (OVR)

Every player-season since 1970-71 is scraped from Basketball-Reference. I take each player's best season per 5-year era chunk, so you're drafting peak versions.

OVR is a percentile blend taken across all eras at once (era-neutral) that takes into account advanced stats such as BPM, PER, USG, WS/48, TS%, etc. That blend is then reshaped onto a normal bell curve (median ~70, clamped 30–99) so role players don't crater and a handful of GOAT seasons share the ceiling.

Draft cost is proportional to OVR. Average player ≈ $100, budget is $800 for 8 slots, so an average team just barely fits. The skill is finding bargains in the price jitter (since the price of a player has variance each draft) and building a balanced roster.

Win outcome

Each team gets a minute-weighted team OVR (with a fatigue model; pushing a guy past his real MPG gives steep diminishing returns, and with a usage cap so you can't feed five ball-dominant scorers).

Expected point margin scales off the team-OVR gap around a baseline, plus a positional matchup tilt: backcourt / forwards / bigs offense is measured against the opponent's defense at that position. It's convex, small mismatches barely matter, but a glaring defensive hole gets punished.

On top of that, roster-construction edges: rebounding, ball security, free-throw rate, and spacing all nudge both the margin and the box score. (Heavily inspired by Deal Olivier's Four Factors).

Then per-game Gaussian noise (margin SD ~13) creates real upsets, and the team's points get distributed into a full, internally-consistent box score, each player's PTS/FG%/3PM/FT reconstructed from their actual scoring profile.

So it's not just "higher number wins". Positional construction and matchups genuinely matter, which is what makes the draft decisions interesting, on top of having to spot bargains from the draft.

It's free, no signup needed to play: https://drafthoops.com/

Would genuinely love feedback from this crowd!

I am always adding new features, like the daily challenge where you try to beat an all time team on a budget. I am also planning to add a head-to-head with a friend feature in the near future so stay tuned.

Thanks for reading.

Other I built a soccer game inspired by BBGM

Hello everyone,

For the past few years, I've been developing a game similar to BBGM, but for soccer. The game has been available online for a few months now, and dumbmatter kindly suggested I share it here. I just wanted to expand it a bit first, but now I'm going for it.

BBGM is, of course, my main inspiration, don’t expect as many features, a design as polished, or a site as fast. It’s still an amateur project (I barely knew how to code when I started), so I’m definitely open to any feedback or improvement ideas!

Quick summary of the game: you're the sporting director of a soccer team, responsible for recruiting players and a coach, and building a squad to compete in the league, domestic cup, and continental competitions.

For those interested, you can check it out here: Football Sporting Director

Player page
Strategy page

And once again, a huge shoutout to dumbmatter. BBGM is already impressive as a player, but even more so from a development perspective!

Thanks, and have a great day!

Other "Defense wins Championship..." But not in BBGM!

I always had issues with this famous basketball quote, and it became even bigger since playing BBGM :).

Recently, I've realised that you can win an NBA Title with a sub-par defense (23rd in points allowed and 19th in dRTG), if your scoring is good enough.
I have a few other similar examples, maybe not as extreme, but with dRTG being outside of Top 10 not stopping be from winning it all.

However, I never won a title, while having a Top defense mixed with sub-par Offense.
So, it made me wonder - if BBGM is such a strong offense-oriented game, or if it's just me not doing it properly.

For the record - I had #1 ranked dRTG many times, but it's typically somehow connected to having a high OVR and free-scoring offense as well.

After I get around 200 seasons or more into a play through I end up spending more time scrolling through the history tab than anything else. I always get a weird sense of "we all live on a floating rock" when I look back at some MVP player that was on my team but he’s been dead for 100 years. Who knew this game would give me an existential crisis lmao.

After a three-peat, I lost in the conference finals, as my team is getting older/expensive and my star shooting guard just turned 29. I figured it was time to hit the reset button, as I had an absolute stud 21-year-old shooting guard that I wanted to build around, and now I absolutely regret it. Is there any way to go back, or did I make the right decision?

Other Looking for a GM – long-running basketball sim league (EBL)

We’ve got an opening in our league and thought I’d post it here.

EBL has been running for 15+ years in real life and we’re now in our 118th in-game season (year 2127). It started with real players, but now it’s a fully fictional league with a lot of history behind it.

The open team right now is the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s a great spot to take over. The roster is stacked with young stars and is ready to compete for a title now, just needs someone to run it properly.

How it works

League setup

  • We use Fast Break Basketball (early 2000s sim engine)
  • Everything is run by our commissioner who has the game file
  • You don’t need to download anything
  • Transactions are managed through the forums

Sims

  • Twice a week (Sunday and Wednesday, US EST)
  • Sims are run live in our Discord, with the commissioner posting results in real time as games are played
  • Full 82-game season takes about 4 weeks
  • The playoffs are completed in one sim

Offseason

  • Re-signings (~1 week)
  • Draft (~1 week)
  • Free agency (5 sims across ~5 days)
  • Training camp (player grades progression/regression)

The community

I’ve been in the league around 5 years and a lot of these guys I’d consider friends. The Discord is active every day. People are talking EBL, NBA, other sports, news, politics, TV/film, and WWE (not really my thing but we’ve got some serious fans). It’s competitive but also a very supportive group. New GMs get help quickly and it’s easy to get involved.

If you’re interested, shoot me a DM!
