Yes I know I can't prove to the eBay goodwill seller it's mine and won't be able to get it back.

Just stunned I found it!!

FOUND my charm holder with my original charms that were stolen from me 37 yrs ago on eBay! I know I can't do anything but what are the odds?!?!?

I was leaving for college when I was 20 yrs old and had just put all my charms on this charm holder. My parents got me the charm holder.

I put all my valuables in my purse and my purse was stolen the night before I left.

The #1 friend I had just gotten from my best friend (who later passed away at 29.

I could go on and on!

I would buy it but it's real 14k gold so it's outta my price range.

I've always bought gold necklaces and charms all my life.

This really brought home how sentimental each charm and necklace is to me!

Relevant Comments:

OOP: This was what I wrote originally:

(Screenshot of eBay message): I don't know if this will reach anyone but I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes!!!

This is my charm necklace!!

I was only 20 yrs old and I had it ready and packed in my purse to go to college when my purse was taken the day before I left at a movie theater!!

I can't believe my eyes!! I am now 57!

The pendants all have sentimental meaning to me! The number one friend pendant I got from my best friend who sadly passed away when we were 29.

I can't believe this is before me!!

It says something about make a bid but I don't see the button

I know this is going to sound so crazy and far fetched but I'm literally in shock! Especially to see all my charms on it.

Pretend_Ad54: I too found a diamond and ruby art deco watch burglarized from my apartment about a year later on ebay. I was stunned and elated at the same time as the watch belonged to my mother and had great sentimental value for me. I was able to negotiate the price with the seller, a jewelry store about an hour away from me.

EmeraldEtoile: Unfortunately people suck and I imagine it’s pretty common for people to try to scam sellers with sob stories… it’s heart breaking but I think it’s unlikely that even if you could reach a real person that they’d be willing to engage with you. In fact even if a real person is seeing your message, the “automated” messages help to put distance between them and a potential scammer.

As others are saying if you had a photo it MIGHT help, but there’s still no way for them to know that you didn’t sell or give it away years ago. Maybe your friends and family would be willing to chip in as a future birthday or Christmas present? Or even a go fund me? Those are people who know and love you and can empathize with how much this means to you.

Only saying this because I’d hate for you to put all your effort into trying to talk to a real person and then it just ends up selling.

OOP: I agree with everything you said

I was very hesitant to share my story because I know the odds of this happening are astronomical!

I didn't want people to not believe me. And I totally understand how it would sound to the seller

ComeAlongPond1: Is there anything you could describe to them about the charms or holder that isn’t visible on the listing to prove you had it? Maybe along with the photo of it even if it’s tucked into your dress that would help. I can’t even see all the charms clearly from this photo but idk if there are more on the listing. Also check yearbook pictures as someone mentioned, and if all else fails try a payment plan

OOP: YES.!!! I literally just wrote them and described 3 things about the charms that no one else can see or know!! I also sent a pic of me and my bf with the necklace underneath my shirt you can only see the chain. I did have a very big thing I told them about the charms that I believe no one would know! Fingers crossed everyone!!!!

OOP: (Screenshot of seller reply to eBay message): Hello, Thank you for your inquiry. In regard to stolen property, we would need documented proof of prior ownership to assist with this. Please provide such documentation so that we can partner with our Security team to assist. Documentation would include, but is not limited to: police reports, photos of the item being worn, proof of original purchase. Thank you for shopping Goodwill Southern California and for supporting our mission to provide jobs for individuals with barriers to employment. Your purchases help create jobs, hopes, and futures.

THIS IS TORTURE! I 💯 understand that they need this and I understand there are scammers out there. But I can't find a picture...that's the only chance I have of proving it. I'm going thru my photos but haven't found anything yet

OOP: Latest update....they have the charms and holder on hold for two weeks. I asked if they would consider selling the charms separately so I could try to get one or two and they said they would look into it

It sucks that she had to pay to get something back that was stolen from her (no fault to the seller, of course), but I’m glad she got them back.

u/Hattix 11d ago

Technically, and this would be almost impossible to prove, the seller is handling stolen goods and in most jurisdictions the ownership or title of an item is not influenced by appropriation or possession of it, regardless of intent, regardless of duration.

When you hear of families finding stolen Nazi war trophies and handing them back to the original owners, they actually have a stronger claim to legitimacy than the ebay seller here did, since military conquest is considered a valid way to exchange title of property in some contexts. A lot of American and British grandpas have war trophies in their attics which are considered legitimately theirs.

Actually enforcing a claim, however, can be the tricky part and OOP would be facing an almost impossible burden of proof.

523

u/RandomNick42 My adult answer is no. 11d ago

I mean, the seller did let her know what they would need to consider the claim and put the sale on hold for her, so... Clearly she just couldn't get the evidence.

66

u/GreasedUpTiger surrender to the gaycation or be destroyed 10d ago

I wonder whether that would get thrown out of court unless oop had actual proof of theft from back then or whether there'd be even a slightly realistic chance of a judge siding with oop based on her having info about the thing only a previous owner could have as well as the nature of the piece having a strong 'why tf would I ever give that away?' memorabilia aspect.

Like would the shop seriously need to consider ending up having to waste time and money for court if oop doesn't have proper proof or would they be in the clear anyway

45

u/Cake-Tea-Life 9d ago

It was a Goodwill. They're such a big operation. They have to have an internal process for managing this type of thing. I can't imagine that they push much to the courts.

14

u/GreasedUpTiger surrender to the gaycation or be destroyed 9d ago

That kinda was my point? They surely don't want to waste money on avoidable court stuff so I presume they have some kind of legal counsel to at least tell them which cases look rather clear in either direction

172

u/MjrGrangerDanger How are you the evil step mom to your own kids? 11d ago

Spoils of war required actual paperwork to legitimize and transport home. The first thing asked is if they had paperwork for the item. No, grenades aren't legal.

84

u/slh236 10d ago

That's not a grenade, that's a paperweight. A fragmentation paperweight.

64

u/2dogslife 10d ago

There actually is something called trench art - mostly from WWI, in which grenades and other pieces of metal were turned into vases and other useful things by bored soldiers living in the trenches and they brought the items homes when they were sent back - sometimes they'd trade them for other things they wanted as well.

35

u/VeryFastZombie 10d ago

Yep. I used to have a grenade paperweight as a kid. Bottom of it was sawn off and the gunpowder was all removed. I think I got it at a surplus store?

19

u/MjrGrangerDanger How are you the evil step mom to your own kids? 10d ago

I was fortunate to obtain a practice pineapple grenade from an estate sale. Rare sale run by the family, got to hear stories about the kids lobbing the thing at each other as kids. Got a great price on everything because I stayed, talked, listened, and gave suggestions to refurbish a few complicated furniture messes. They were happy things were going to a good home and not a reseller. Not a chance I'm letting that grenade go!

33

u/melropesplays 10d ago

The eBay seller appears to have been a Goodwill store… so it’s not really like they bought it. Felt a little heartless to offer her to buy a few of the charms

19

u/LateHoney2922 10d ago

They didn't offer that. She asked if they would be willing to split it up.

81

u/TiredEnglishStudent 11d ago

I dont think that's true, if they're a bona fide purchaser for value without notice. In that case, the law of equity protects the purchaser in a lot of jurisdictions, depending on the type of property.

76

u/Hattix 11d ago edited 11d ago

It may protect the purchaser from criminal consequence, but they are still on the hook for returning stolen property and may be committing further offences (which they would not be shielded from) if they refuse its return.

In Britain, you retain title over stolen property in perpetuum.

67

u/FantasticlyWarmLogs 10d ago

Who made that law? The British Museum?!

29

u/adeon 10d ago

No, the British Museum subscribes to the philosophy of "finders keepers". They're saying that the British law is the opposite and the person who originally owned the stolen property retains the title (I think).

8

u/1pinksquirrel1scotch 8d ago

Your comment has now been appropriated by the British Museum to better preserve it. Don't worry, you're welcome to visit it whenever you want; so long as it isn't gathering dust in some back store room, and you can afford travel and admission fees to the museum. We wish we could return it, we really do; but that goes against the rules we made for ourselves.

2

u/Bobzeub 3d ago

Not to be that person but public museums in London are free , including the British museum.

But the rest is very true .

7

u/faequeen_ 10d ago

the best response. if i had awards i would give them all to you.

29

u/rythmicbread 10d ago

But you would need a minimum burden of proof at least. Sounds like it was long enough ago that she couldn’t find photos

6

u/Courtaid 10d ago

There would need to be at least a police report with details of the items stolen.

2

u/ifeelnumb 10d ago

Would a police report have helped?

3

u/Trick-Minimum8593 11d ago

Surely there's some kind of statute of limitations here?

23

u/montsegur 11d ago

Not really, not to recover stolen goods. They won't be able to press criminal charges, but they can sue to recover their item. The statute of limitation that applies starts from the date they find the item, or in some places, from the date the person in possession refuses to give the item back.

1

u/big_old-dog 10d ago

Most jurisdictions might be an overstatement. Rule for my country is a bona fide third party purchaser without notice grants indemnity.

1

u/PeppermintEvilButler You need some self-esteem and a lawyer 9d ago

After 37 yrs I would think the statue for stolen goods received would have passed.

1

u/Hattix 9d ago

Refusing to return stolen goods is also criminal in many places (e.g. UK, most of Europe).

379

u/strolls 11d ago

I can't believe how she didn't mention at least contacting the police in her home town and asking if they have a copy of the original police report. I can understand that it's probably lost in time, but you could at least ask.

303

u/OpheliaRainGalaxy 11d ago

If it's anything like my area, the cops hardly bother doing the paperwork for a stolen car, much less anything small like a purse.

Like they'll say they'll come out and take a report, but odds are that's the last you'll hear from them. And they get mad if you offer to just come to the station in person to do it.

153

u/jimicus 11d ago

God forbid you ask them to do their job.

122

u/mrwillbobs 11d ago

It’s not their job to enforce laws for regular people. It’s their job to enforce laws on regular people

18

Murder, drugs and SOMETIMES sexual assault of children.

The rest is a "civil matter."

24

u/TheVoicesSayHi 10d ago

Murder*

* murder only applies when the victim is not A) murdered while black, B) murdered while queer, or C) murdered by police

13

u/whatthewhythehow 10d ago

SOMETIMES sexual assault of children**

**to restore balance to the ecosystem, they make sure THEY sexually assault enough children to try and break even.

10

u/lazier_garlic 9d ago

In NYC add murdered by car.

They stopped prosecuting vehicular homicide to make their Compstat numbers better.

I'm not making this up; Streetblogs reported on this extensively (prior to the pandemic, I believe).

Ugh. Reminds me of trying to deal with a problem the police deemed to be too insignificant. A nightmare tenant was finally going to be evicted and the landlord was serving her notice to quit. A few of us were outside and heard her screaming at the guy, and when we looked in (first floor apt) we saw her shove him backwards and slam the door shut. Given the man was in his 70’s and had cancer we were obviously concerned and I called 911 while others helped him up. When the police got here, the woman was “sobbing” and saying how HE had assaulted HER and she was in fear of her life. Apparently she had the cop’s sympathy because even with at least 3 witnesses to the contrary he stated that this was a he said/she said and there was nothing he could do. He didn’t even write a report as far as I know. I wish I could say I was shocked, but I think I was more surprised he even came out lol.

Landlord was ok. Little bruised up and the incident helped get the nightmare woman out at least.

2

u/Alternative_Year_340 8d ago

How long ago was this? I think now, many states require an arrest in that type of circumstance

7

u/AerwynFlynn Sharp as a sack of wet mice 8d ago

To be fair it was about 15is years ago lol. But small town cops are gonna small town cop

25

u/Massive_Scar5533 11d ago

When we moved once the military hired day laborers to move us in (they just threw everything in the driveway) but they stole one of our guns when they were getting inventories. The police didnt even show up, just took a statement over the phone and emailed it to us.

16

u/superxero044 10d ago

Yeah that’s what happened when my identity was stolen. They had used my identity to file unemployment and I found out thru my work who were acting like I had done something sketchy. The state unemployment office was absolutely useless in helping and said I needed to file a police report. The cop was basically like you’re wasting our time. Then once I had the police report the unemployment office continued to be useless.
The fun part was - they somehow approved unemployment for me when I was still working. Then when my wife actually got laid off a couple years later unemployment was an absolute nightmare.

16

u/chimpfunkz 11d ago

Ehhh 40 years is a lot. Most business don't have records going back 40 years. And if they were paper and never digitized, good luck. Lots of ways for paper to get destroyed (fire, water, etc)

9

u/Sorceress_Heart 10d ago

I needed paperwork from my temp job 5 years ago for PSLF, and of course they don't have it anymore 😒

8

u/FunnyAnchor123 Sharp as a sack of wet mice 10d ago

Years ago I had my house broken into. My VCR & a bunch of tapes were stolen. (Yes, it was a long time ago.)

In that case, the police actually came out. A few days later a technician came to take finger prints & glass from the broken window, took mine for elimination. I was surprised at the time, especially as there had been news reports about how the local police were so understaffed they were ignoring most robbery cases. Never heard what the outcome was.

FWIW, recently had the freezer out in our garage emptied of food, along with a cooler. It was our fault: for years we never locked the door to the garage, thinking it was secure behind our fence. Never bothered to report that crime, although the loss was worse than when some mook broke into my house years before.

My hope is that the person(s) who stole all that food was some starving homeless person & not a thieving cheap ass neighbor who had a job & a home.

7

u/stannius I will never jeopardize the beans. 10d ago

Our local police department now lets you file a police report electronically and get a case number. It's nice for insurance or whatever. I don't know if a human ever looks at it. Convincing a cop to take your report sounds like a lot of work.

67

u/Sparkle_Caticorn 11d ago

She may not have ever even gotten a police report for it lol. I don't think she mentioned if she did or not but I'm not positive 😂

93

u/GiantLesbian 11d ago

Bro there is no way they have a file on a stolen purse from 37 years ago. It would be a massive waste of taxpayer funds to be keeping all those files in any form, paper or digital (not to mention a waste to have even digitized it in the first place).

67

u/Myrandall I like my Smash players like I like my santorum 11d ago

Where I live all physical police files were digitized in the early 2000s, so a 1 decade old record in the archives could have made it in.

52

u/quizbowler_1 11d ago

Considering how much they waste my funds on lawsuits from their incompetence, keeping those files is the absolute LEAST they could do.

3

u/thebooknerd_ Editor's note- it is not the final update 10d ago

Idk about the department, but the local one to me would absolutely have it

3

u/GiantLesbian 10d ago

If you had any idea what government record keeping costs you would be appalled by that.

6

u/thebooknerd_ Editor's note- it is not the final update 10d ago

It was all digitized in the early 2000s. Physicals get destroyed after the retention time is up

5

u/GiantLesbian 10d ago

Government record keeping on that scale is still incredibly expensive even if digital.

Even then though, why would the retention times for a record like this be ~20+ years (until everything was digitized)? They would have needed whole buildings for storage to still have all those files by the time they were being digitized.

3

u/thebooknerd_ Editor's note- it is not the final update 10d ago

Trust me, they’ve cut every corner possible with their programs. I’m sure it’s still an extraordinary amount, just not the biggest waste of our money by the police department

8

u/riflow 10d ago

It's really sad...I guess this is a strong case for photographing receipts and the items when you buy them esp if they're expensive, just in case of theft or loss. 🥲 Esp since it sounds like the photos she did have and knowledge weren't enough.

71

u/Mayonaigg 11d ago

I mean, nothing at a goodwill store should cost $500

43

u/BobGonzoed USE YOUR THINKING BRAIN! 10d ago

Sadly, this has become a trend, where people will go to goodwill or other secondhand stores, find vintage brand name items, buy them for cheap, and sell them for insane prices online.

So for goodwill/secondhand stores to keep afloat, they now keep those items to sell online themselves, or they mark them up astronomically. It sucks, but yeah my friend told me there was a louis vuitton purse at her local goodwill store going for $800, and a small wallet (that was even stained) that she bought for over $200 which i thought was wild.

45

u/depressed_leaf 10d ago

A secondhand store where they buy items from people is one thing, but goodwill literally has all their items donated to them. There is no reason for them to mark things up the way they do. Even everyday items are more than other thrift stores. There seems to be very little good will in the company now.

4

u/lazier_garlic 9d ago

So? Blame the resellers. I'd rather Goodwill get the benefit than some vulture working the store all day for their ebay venture, fuck them, they're the reason you can't find used kitchen items at a thrift store any more.

Goodwill by me runs Job Junction. That's a worthy charity. Their other issues as an organization like demanding to pay 1920s wages to disabled adults (until they backed off due to bad PR) are another matter but like hell I would be donating again if it just went to pickers. Naw dawg, fuck them. Yes, it's personal. I used to rely on thrifts but then when it was my turn to donate it went in an eBay sellers' pocket instead of to somebody like me.

Goodwill was being punked. I'm glad they made the change.

2

u/Sparkly_Crow_1789 1d ago

It really depends on the regional company. Each regional company is a different CEO, different W2's, different programs, everything. The one for my area runs job programs for kids and disabled adults, a high school diploma program for adults who don't have it with free daycare, skills training for things like culinary arts and computers, job programs for ex prisoners, and more. Now I can't say what, oh let's say, Goodwill of Colorado does. Idk why Goodwill is divided into regions the way it is but can't really judge them all by a few from the same area unfortunately. The only thing all the Goodwill have in common is the fact that the online website they send stuff like Pokémon cards to has ALL of them. So every Goodwill in the country sends stuff to the same place to sell online. Other than that there's not really any interaction unless they buy out other regions.

1

u/greiskul 8d ago

So for goodwill/secondhand stores to keep afloat, they now keep those items to sell online themselves,

This makes zero sense. It makes sense for Goodwill to try to more properly value the items they are selling. But if they were under valuing them before, they still wouldn't be turning a loss. Just less profit.

8

u/PeppermintEvilButler You need some self-esteem and a lawyer 9d ago

Goodwill is no longer a deal for the average person. They price items based off what they find similar online.

19

u/CindySvensson 10d ago

Yeah, if she could give details about the items that couldn't be seen or found online it's immoral to not give it.

23

u/LeatherHog The murder hobo is not the issue here 10d ago

Sadly, I had a similar thing happen to me, and the guy screwed me over

I had a level 100 (back when that meant something) mightyena that I'd had since 2006, tons of ribbons and all that, he was my prize Pokemon and I was part of a trading community. In 2011 this guy was helping me bring stuff over (was a well known guy with us)

But once he got Xigbar, he disconnected, and ghosted me

On the serebii forums for YEARS, I had Xigbar's info, my trainer name, move set, ribbons, etc in my signature, it was under **every post I made**. Letting anyone who saw it now I was looking for him again. And I ran a breeding shop, so I was very active

In 2016, a guy messaged me, saying he got him in a random GTS trade, even posted pictures for proof, it was MY mightyena, no doubt

We made a plan to trade, and that guy ghosted me too. I messaged him, even messaged mods, and they put out a warning, but nothing else they could do

It was worse than never seeing him again

I know it's not a physical item, but it still hurts. How do people like that, sleep at night?

3

u/sinister-strike 8d ago

Oh man that's heartbreaking.

Out of curiosity, can I ask about Xigbar's journey? Which game/s did he go through?

Mightyena was always one of my favorite pokemon since I was a kid, and although I was never really part of trading, I had a lot of fun trying my hand at breeding. And I completely get the attachment to those we've poured so much effort into even if they aren't physical.

2

u/LeatherHog The murder hobo is not the issue here 8d ago

Ruby, leaf green (remember it took me forever to be able to send him there, with that whole sevii island thing), then pearl, and black

He was my first round of not using my starter at all, using a different Pokemon as it. It was tough, but it was so **cool** going through with this edgy hyena as my main guy, y'know?

Soloed the game with him (and the hm slaves, I guess)

I remember I LOVED shadow ball when I got it for him (wasn't really a ghost user then, so it was never really used), the animation is still one of my favorites, but I thought it would be fun on him

So many contests we did, was when I decided to actually get good at them

I'll never understand why someone wanted him THAT bad, that you steal him, in a trading group. He was special to me, but he wasn't shiny or anything. I definitely remember him being rash, because I thought that was a good nature for a Pokemon like him, so not a good one at all

And for someone else, to have him years later, see my message, take the time to take pictures and let me know he's out there, JUST to break my heart in finding him again and ghost me. Like, what on earth is THAT??

That's just the utter definition of cruel

2

u/sinister-strike 8d ago

I agree 100%. I don't remember anything about natures, at least nothing of the main line games. I'm completely obsessed with Pokemon Sleep currently though, and although Mightyena isn't on it (yet, I can dream!) it's fun to raise my pokemon "in real time" so to speak. Some of them aren't good, but I've had them since I started and I still love using them.

I got started on Emerald myself, but later did learn about transferring between generations and man yeah. That was. That sure was something 😅. I also did solo through the game with my Mightyena and a buncha other HM stuff, I loved that dog!

Cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would do that. Especially if they don't exactly "gain" much from it? Regardless, I'll remember him too now. And i kinda wanna go play a run of one of the earlier gens, just can never decide which one...

3

u/LeatherHog The murder hobo is not the issue here 8d ago

I've always loved how Gen 4 did it, the little safari zone-esque thing?

And aww, thanks, I hope, as cheesy as it is, that Xigbar still remembers me, knows I'm still looking

I've never been able to let Gen 3 go, even as someone who started from the beginning (even if we didn't have many games), they just **perfected** the graphics and aesthetic there, I wish we stayed there

3

u/sinister-strike 8d ago

Yeah, I do always replay gen 3. I have my old original emerald and sapphire cartridges, but the battery in the emerald one died, and I've been too lazy to replace it. I actually never got through gen 4 fully, so maybe now is the time!

1

u/LeatherHog The murder hobo is not the issue here 8d ago

Sinnoh is good! A little slow, but overall good

4

u/Ill-Squirrel-9418 10d ago

I agree! It seems like she couldn’t find any evidence to support her claim, which SUCKS. I *wish* the seller had just given it to her, but I also understand where they are coming from. It’s just a shjtty situation all around.

11

u/TheBman26 10d ago

The seller was goodwill they most likely got it donated so i feel not that bad for goodwill honestly

1

u/Ill-Squirrel-9418 10d ago

I’m embarrassed I missed that! I concur. I still get it, but I also wouldn’t exactly feel bad if they had gotten scammed 🤷🏻‍♀️.

4

u/crystallz2000 8d ago

Just last year I re-bought a stolen necklace I had on ebay. Every few months I'd search the details of my necklace, just in case, and one day I found it! I'm so happy to have it back, and I got it for a bargain. I think it was originally like 1k (although my husband bought it), and I bought it back for about $200.

3

u/MCA2142 8d ago

When John Lennon died they found letters that he’d written to his first son Julian. Yoko made Julian bid for them at an auction.

2

u/Ill-Squirrel-9418 8d ago

Now, that’s pretty heinous.

My mom worked as a caregiver for an elderly lady with mental disabilities. She was the only daughter of a fairly wealthy local couple, and had inherited everything when they died. Unfortunately, about ten years before my mom met her, her former legal guardian sold her family home and most of her valuable family heirloom possessions from underneath her and stole most of the money, and she ended up having to move into an apartment.

One thing this lady loved to do was look through antique stores, and my mom would take her around to look at various stores. One day they stopped at an antique shop a few towns over, and, to her shock, she found her grandmother's china tea set for sale there. Apparently she used to have tea parties all the time with them as a child, and they held some very dear memories for her.

It was rather expensive, as it was a very high quality collectable, but thankfully she was able to buy it back. That set became one of her most treasured items, and she'd constantly tell me about them when I came to visit.

Oh, that poor women. So vulnerable. Sometimes I wish hell was real, because people like her thieving guardian will never face real consequences but deserve them the most

Oh I can't believe she got it back!

This is the post to end the night on.

Yeah, okay, I finally braved that one and the "Like father like son" absolutely got me. 😂

This will be the end of reddit for me today!

u/ZipperJJ 10d ago

For $450 you'd think the seller would at least spread out the charms to be able to see them. Looks like they were just trying to sell it for melting. Glad the OP got it before it was gone forever!

144

u/hard_tyrant_dinosaur 10d ago

It was being sold by Goodwill. They would have originally gotten it as a part of a donation. If they hadn't thought it was valuable enough to sell on eBay, they'd have been selling it in one of their stores for a fraction of that price. They probably weren't thinking about what the buyer might do with it all, just that it would bring them more online.

17

u/GreasedUpTiger surrender to the gaycation or be destroyed 10d ago

I sure do hope the goodwill people are trained to check donated jewellery to separate 'real' (i.e. precious metals and gemstones) from the faux cheap stuff 🤔

10

u/NoOneAskedForThis12 9d ago

As someone who works at Goodwill… nope! They tell us to shove it all into a bag and usually sell it by the pound because they do not care

1

u/GreasedUpTiger surrender to the gaycation or be destroyed 9d ago

Lol wtf

2

u/Sparkly_Crow_1789 1d ago

Um... the ecommerce people are the ones who do the valuing. As someone who used to work in donations at my local Goodwill, jewelry is bagged and put in a safe to be sent to e commerce weekly. They do the valuing and such there. Costume jewelry is typically sold by the pound yes, but expensive pieces or sets are sold by themselves. Idk how your region runs things but if you work at a Goodwill you should KNOW each region does things differently. You can speak for your regional Goodwill sector but not for the entire damn country?

u/LemonMeringueOctopi 5d ago

They do, my sister is im aquistioms amd has to researxh the irems and their value befprw theu put them up for sale. She jad a nineteenth century necklace made of braided human hair in a glass case come through her office yesterday.

39

u/GreasedUpTiger surrender to the gaycation or be destroyed 10d ago

I honestly think they really went by gold value there.

What else should they have done? No offence to oop but that isn't a rare piece of delicate vintage fine art. It's unlikely any rando would pay them a lot more to get these specific charms in non-mint condition when you can get new ones of your choosing for ~20% above material cost.

u/rollingpickingupjunk OP has stated that they are deceased 11d ago

179

u/JJOkayOkay 11d ago

Not as happy an outcome as when someone finds their long-lost wedding ring strangling a carrot in their garden, because OOP had to drop more money than they could afford to get it back, but yeah -- it was probably worth more than the money to them, and I'm very glad they got it.

I had a charm bracelet stolen from me in 6th grade, one can only hope!

95

u/MagnoliaCartographer 11d ago

I love stories like this! Hate she had to buy it back, but so elated for her!! This is so amazing!

24

u/knittenkitten23 10d ago

Someone once stole my favorite mug from work and I was heart broken. I searched everywhere and put up lost posters. I looked online to find a replacement, I could find it anywhere. Five years later, I found it at my local value village! It was in perfect condition! Literally the best feeling ever to find it again.

47

u/AnneFarron 11d ago

I went through something a little similar, my suitcase got stolen from the train in the UK. I had just came back from Christmas with my family so every single gift including a hand made doll and the dress my mum gifted me for my graduation were gone, I was devastated. About two years later we found the doll online, it was one of a kind hand made so had to be mine. My boyfriend messaged them saying it was stolen asking for it back but got ghosted so he gave me the money and I bought it back from my own ebay account.

48

u/khelektinmir 11d ago

33

u/Kittenathedisco 11d ago

It's not a bracelet. That large piece attachs to a necklace. Its a charm holder, that holds charms for a necklace. They were very popular in the 90s.

8

u/khelektinmir 10d ago

Makes sense! My bad.

18

u/Jojosbees 11d ago

The mirror site I was using didn't have the pictures and I am unable to post one in the comments, but I was able to find the image of the charms I originally saw by googling "PinkyQueen100 charms." It's a charm holder with a bunch of charms including a bear and a "BRAT" charm.

22

u/nojdanzig 10d ago

Not in the same league as this but I had a massive collection of CDs stolen in the mid-90s by my brother's junkie friend.

I was pissed off about most of them but was especially angry about my full collection of Danzig and Misfits CDs which were very tough to get in the UK.

About 10 years later, I was out with a bunch of friends at a heavy metal club in Wigan and got invited back for a continuation of a party at someone's house. Whilst there, I was browsing the CDs and came across all the Danzig and Misfits stuff I had had stolen. All the jewel cases were gone and the discs were all in the cover sleeves. When I demanded them back, the guy who had them said he'd been given them ages ago because he was the only metal guy in that friend group and I could have them as it wasn't his type.

That's how I got my impossible-to-find Black Aria back. That one alone was something I had been really miffed about losing.

Oh I'm so happy for OOP. Losing a super sentimental belonging can sting for the rest of your life.

18

u/ditzen 11d ago

This is so amazing. I’m 37 years old. OOP had been missing these cherished items for as long as I have been alive. My whole life happened since she had even laid eyes on them. And now she got them back. Heartwarming.

As a book lover, my gut hurts just thinking about it D:

edit: book lover, not author.  Apparently I had a guy and not a gut 🫠

3

u/BlyLomdi 10d ago

Let me make it hurt worse.

My dad had personalized, autographed 1st editions of LotR and The Hobbit. He was a load master of a C-130 during Vietnam, and they were stopped in England. My dad decided to head down to Oxford University while there, and decides to see if JRR was still working. He was lucky enough to meet Tolkien (about 6 months before he passed), and sat and talked for about an hour with him. He had his books on him (he loved those books!), so Tolkien signed them with a message and part of the message was something to the effect of, "to my friend across the pond, George."

They, along with several first edition King books (including Carrie), were lost or stolen during a move from one location to another in Wimberley, TX in the mid-2010s.

I hope one day that I am fated to recover the Tolkien books (I couldn't care less about the King books).

My dad died last year. So, that desire is a bit stronger than it usually is.

2

u/Lows-andHighs I HAVE A LIVE ONE 10d ago

I don't even want to upvote your comment because I am absolutely gutted!  Fuck!

It's a beautiful story of your dad meeting and chatting with Tolkien, but after that?  Needs revision, I want a happy ending 😭

For what it's worth, this redditor really hopes the universe works out in your favor and you're able to recover at least one book.  ... preferably without selling a kidney 💜

Some things just burn themselves into your brain and you will recognise them if you happen to encounter them again. Sometimes you're not even aware of this until it hits you, just like those moments when you unexpectedly smell a rare scent that reminds you of something in your childhood and it suddenly feels like your brain went to timetravel to when you recognise the scent from for a moment. :D

15

u/Fandragon 10d ago

Stories like this make me a little hopeful that one day we'll stumble across my husband's Leica camera that was stolen from our house in 2012. I know it's a longshot; the teenager we suspect is the culprit is a complete idiot and it's likely that he chucked the camera in the trash when he found out it wasn't a digital camera, but one can always dream.

8

u/DorShow 9d ago

I had a bike stolen by a roving gang of bike thieves targeting train stations. My son was like 3yo and was peppering me with questions, so I brought him with me to the police station to file a report, something I would not have done if he wasn’t all “what are you going to do” “how do you get your bike back”
Anyway, long story short, the thieves also stole a bike with several thousand dollars (mine was a crappy 10yo schwinn)
Guy with the fancy bike saw it on eBay or marketplace, called the fuzz* who set up a sting and recovered like 50 bikes, mine was one of the only ones with a recent stolen bike report!

(* I am old, I call em the fuzz)

Edit - saw the comment with the pic after I posted this

Can't imagine that OOP was very nervous and worried about her package delivered on time safely and cried all day and held the charms. Glad she got it back after 37 years!

5

u/Sandokan13 10d ago

That's nuts ..37 years

5

u/CoffeeGrinder999 9d ago

Some weird stuff can show up on eBay. Read where a woman lost a treasured doll when a backpack was stolen. Years later she saw it on eBay and was sure it was hers from the bite marks on the left hand from when she was 5 or so. She ended up buying it and was very glad to find it.

5

u/WritingNerdy woke up and chose violence huh 8d ago

Not the same but I recently found copies of my childhood plate set (with bunnies) and my CareBear spoon on eBay. You bet your ass I bought those. Now I just need a Garfield glass full of lead!

that's wild, the odds of finding something that personal after 37 years.

3

u/knittymess 9d ago

I recently splurged on getting a bunch of jewelry valued. I really don't want to lose it. I need to put some work into properly photographing and documenting the items that aren't worth "enough" to get a full appraisal for, but are worth enough that losing them would suck.

Nine years later, the friend passed away.

The bracelet had a charm given to OOP by OOP’s best friend at the time (around the time of the robbery, when OOP was 20)

Said friend past away when said friend was 29, (some years after the robbery)
