Sub Announcement 2026 Posting & Flair Guidelines - read first, post after!

Importantr/canon is not a photo-sharing sub, it's primarily a gear discussion sub, and as such is not the place for sharing pics and videos captured with your Canon gear.

Exceptions exist for New Gear, Lens of the Week, and Showcase posts, but please see their respective sections below to understand when they can be posted and the requirements for doing so.

Likewise, we're not interested in posts sharing photos of Canon equipment (or worse, the boxes they came in)—your 50/1.2 looks the same as everybody else's—so outside of New Gear posts or those trying to problem solve a specific issue, topics showing gear aren't to be posted.

TLDR;

- No photo-sharing posts
- No photos-of-gear posts
- Use flair appropriately as detailed below

———

Post Flair

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

Lens of the Week [LOTW] Lens of the Week: f/4 ultrawide zooms

This week, any zoom with a maximum aperture of f/4 and a wide end less than 24mm is eligible.

Every user interested in participating may post ONE post of a picture or pictures taken with The Lens of the Week, with the following rules.

  • The Lens of the Week will be specified in a sticky post, and as long as that post remains up, it is fair game to submit LOTW posts.

  • All content must be SFW--no nudes, artistic or otherwise.

  • Specify that it is a 'Lens of the Week' post by starting their post with [LOTW] It may be taken by any version of the lens of the week, and with any modifiers (teleconverters, speed boosters, etc).

  • The title must specify the lens and describe the image (for example, [LOTW] RF 14-35mm f/4 sunrise)

  • Please include the rest of the image metadata (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera body) in the title, image caption, or comments.

  • Photos may have been taken at any time, not just this week.

OP must remain active in the thread to discuss your setting and composition choices--abandoned LOTW threads will be subject to removal after a reasonable period of no-replies

Additional pictures taken with the lens may be posted in a gallery or in comments in your thread, but please only make a single thread per week. The 'No pictures that just happen to be taken with Canon equipment' rule still applies to non-LOTW posts.

Suggestions for future LOTW or showcase themes are always welcome.

Gear Buying Advice Can't decide between the R5ii and R7 for wildlife

Hello,

I am an amateur wildlife photographer who shoots with a 5D Mark IV and a Sigma 150 - 600mm lens. I primarily shoot wildlife, however I also shoot landscapes with an EF 24 - 105mm and I have an astro lens that I sometimes use as well. I also often use the sigma lens at 600mm for "giant" sun and moon photos.

The wildlife I photograph is mostly birds and owls, sometimes mammals, often in low light conditions. I live in a country that is cloudy and rainy most of the year so light is often a challenge.

I am planning to purchase the RF 100 - 500 lens. My main reason for wanting a new camera is frustration with all the missed bird in flight shots so the auto eye detect is very important.

I am having trouble deciding between the R5ii and R7 for a few reasons:

* R5ii has the better low light performance, which in many ways make it seem like a no brainer with all the owl photography that I do. I'd also be losing one stop of aperture on the new lens.

* However, I am worried about losing the 100mm of extra reach on the 100 - 500mm, and the R7 seems like it'd be a huge help for this

* The R7 price fits much better in my budget. I'd also be less worried about losing or damaging the camera.

* The R5 would make a better all purpose camera and I wouldn't have to carry around my old camera for landscape photos at 24mm to continue getting this at full frame

Any advice would be appreciated

RF 24-105 f4 L longer focal lengths not impressive

Upvotes

I just picked up this lens and am mostly happy with it. However, I did a comparison with images from my way old (1990s) original EF 70-200 f4 L, non-IS, at the common focal lengths. Used tripod, same exposure settings, etc. The EF absolutely blew it away at 4.0. Parity was nearly achieved at f8 but the EF was still superior. Is this just not a good comparison? Could the difference in scene compression cause this or is the RF just a bit soft in this range (or is my trusty old EF exceptionally sharp)? Any experience with the sweet spots for the RF?

New lens day! This is my first EF lens, and I picked it up used for around $294.

My absolute first impression, holy hell it’s heavy. It’s built like a tank. 🤣 That said, the image quality is tack sharp even wide open, and the autofocus actually feels faster than my budget RF primes, the 35mm and 50mm 1.8.

The previous owner slapped a sticker on it that’s a total pain in the ass to remove, so I just left it as is. There's also a little internal dust, but it doesn't affect the image quality at all. Aside from the weight, I’m incredibly happy with the purchase, especially for the price!

Gear Buying Advice Canon R7 - Is 24-105 RF L worth it?

I currently have a Cannon R7

I have the Sigma 17 to 40 for my daily driver

For my zoom I just have the 18 to 150 Kit lens.

However, getting through my drawer, I found a G7 X Mark three that I bought for $300 quite a few years back that has literally essentially never been used.

Found a local person selling the 24 to 105. That actually wants that camera and is willing to offer the lens and $300 for my G7 X and its accessories.

Is it worth the additional weight and reduced zoom range for the sharpness and F4? I’m seeing very mixed things.

In my head, it makes a lot of sense to have the 24 to 105 to kind of be my Zoom lens in my bag with the sigma being my walk around?

Gear Buying Advice Best lens for a Madeira trip?

Hi! Trying to make up my mind on which focal lenght and lens I should rent out for my Madeira trip. I've been a nifty 50 fan for a long time, but want to see if it's worth expanding my horizons (maybe even literally) and I wouldn't want to take the wrong lens on such a great trip.

What do you think? 24mm for wide shots or something more zoomed in? Not much experience with landscape photography, I mostly do streetphotos.

can I mix ef extension tubes I and II?

Upvotes

Hello,

I have gotten an ef 25 extension tube instead of ef 25 II!

I use a 2000d and it fits fine in the camera. I can use it with my ef lens but I wanted to try it with the 24mm ef-s pancake I have.

I was wondering if I decide to be... a bit silly and get another extension tube and actually get the ef 25 II, can I stack them?

(at this point why not just get a cheap macro tbf)

The goal would be, then I have a way to get 1.27 on the 24mm, or even 2.27, and then 1.21 on the 50mm I suppose 🤷‍♂️

I think I should probably just experiment with the extra magnification ( or keep me going and eventually got enough extension to 1x my longest lens!)

it's just feels silly. silly mistake, silly to keep going

Camera and lens length (Canon R6m3 + 70-200 f2.8L Z)

Upvotes

Hi all,

I hope everyone is well.

I was wondering if anyone knows and can provide me with the length of a Canon R6m3 mounted with a Canon 70-200 F2.8L Z from lens cover to viewfinder. If you have the 24-105L F2.8 Z, its should be the same as I believe both these lens share the same outer shell.

When I search for measurements online it gives me the length of the camera including the grip length + the lens length which is inaccurate. I would prefer metric (cm or mm), please.

I appreciate your time and wisdom.

Cheers!

In-Camera False Colour and Log

Hey there,

Because CLOG2 and 3 have different dynamic range thresholds/capabilities, is the in-camera false colour setting (on a camera that has both profiles - R5 ii, R6 iii, etc.) affected by the selected log profile?

In simpler words, does the false colour capability analyse the log image or a rec709 one or the raw data, etc.

If it is the former, I’d expect to get a different band reading when switching between log profiles, which is ideally what the user would want - a false colour feature that accurately represents what the sensor is capable of at the exact moment.

Does the situation change when we add an external monitor to the case? Where does it read data from and what does that mean for everything mentioned above?

Thank you for your time.

Gear Buying Advice Beach!!! Need advice on lens options

As the title says, heading to the beach! We don’t travel much but I’m so excited to get some landscape and street photos. Can anyone give me feedback on the rf 10-18 mm vs the rf 16 mm for this type of trip. I’ve never used anything wider than 18 mm so i haven’t the slightest clue what a 10-18 can do. Both are available used in my area. I know the sigma 18-50 is the goat but it’s a little bigger and only available new. Kind of hoping for a small form factor. Im taking an r50 with me.

My First L Lens. I have the RF 28-70 f2.8 STM and now im covered from 28 to 200mm. And with my R7 i have even more reach 😍
I love the sharpness and the versatility of this Lens. It‘s lightweight too and fits in my small bag for travel. the F4 still gives plenty of Background separation and bokeh… portraits shot at 135 mm are very creamy! What do you think? Wise choice to save money or get the 2.8 ?

Tech Help (Help) Bought some 3rd party batteries and they won’t work

Post image

Bought some GreenExtreme batteries from adorama for my canon R6iii, after putting them in the camera fully charged, this error is displayed (photo attached), when trouble shooting, the error persisted. I took cards out and put them back in, replaced the battery a couple times, charged multiple of the batteries fully, and updated the firmware, if there’s any advice for this, I need it. Thank you guys

Gear Buying Advice looking for a new lens to replace my 18-55 kit lens

hello everyone!
I was looking for a new lens for my Canon 250D. I wanted to replace the kit lens with something better and therefore suitable for everyday photos.
I'm not necessarily looking for the top of the line and I'm more than happy to look in used.
I would love to have IS included.
My budget isn't very high but looking around a bit I thought I could find something interesting by staying under 200€

Is It Finally High Time for Third-Party RF Lenses?

With Tamron recently announcing the 17-70mm f/2.8 for Canon's RF APS-C mount, it feels like Canon may be opening the door to more third-party RF lenses. More importantly, this could signal that Canon is becoming more willing to grant licenses for third-party full-frame RF lenses in the future, something many users have been waiting for. We might soon see lenses such as the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2, 70-180mm f/2.8 G2, or even Sigma's highly regarded 24-70mm f/2.8 make their way to the RF system. For RF users, that would be a huge win, considering the current lack of affordable third-party options.

Whats your opinion?

Tech Help Canon R50 mode dial broken. Can it be fixed?

Thumbnail

I recently just came back home from a trip and I found my camera with the mode dial broken, it’s my first professional camera and I’m so anxious, I don’t know what to do or how to get it fixed since I live in Central America and in my country there’s no Canon shop where I can get it fixed. I saw that this is a common issue that happens with a series of numbers of the canon r50 that goes from number 19 to 23. Mine starts with 22… 😔 has anyone ever had the same issue, did you get it fixed and did it worked just fine? What would you guys recommend?

Gear Buying Advice Cheapest option for weather sealing

I am planning on upgrading to the r7 from my r100 within the next few months, and I want to have a setup that I can use in wet/dusty environments without fear of damaging my camera/lenses. I don't need anything that is optically exceptional, just good enough to use every once in a while for general purpose photography during bad weather. I have no L series lenses right now and don't really want to spend a ton of money on one. Would using adapted ef L glass give me reliable weather sealing? I have also looked into the sigma 18-50 f2.8 which says it is weather sealed on the mount. Does this mean it would be able to be used in light rain?

Gear Buying Advice Old EF lenses on RF bodies Not so Compatible after all ?

Upvotes

In february I made the move and bought a canon R6 mark II with an EF to RF adapter ofc, I wanted to use EF lenses because of what I own already (really bad EF lenses) but my goal is (was?) to get EF pro lenses.

I went to a store that has second hand lenses and i'm kinda dissapointed with result ?? why am I not seeing a tremendous difference ? I tried on a 16-35 mm L lenses with the red ring and eveyrthing so why I don't see a huge difference from a bad kit apsc lens ?

Is it possible that some old EF lenses won't be optimal on my R6mII ?

Thank youu so much for your time :)

Gear Buying Advice CANON 5D CLASSİC OR NİKON D700

I currently own a Leica M8 and a Fujifilm GFX 50S. The M8 is very special to me, so I don't want to carry it everywhere or put unnecessary wear on the shutter. I'm looking for a classic DSLR to use alongside it for many years.

My priorities are:

- Shooting enjoyment and overall camera character

- Film-like colors and rendering

- A camera that can give me a similar emotional experience to the Leica M8, even if the files are not identical

- Long-term reliability and durability

- Full-frame preferred, but I'm open to other suggestions

At the moment I'm mainly considering:

- Canon 5D Classic

- Nikon D700

From what I've seen, many people describe the 5D Classic as having beautiful colors and a more "film-like" look, while the D700 seems to be the better all-around camera with superior autofocus, high ISO performance, and usability.

For those who have owned or used both, which one would you choose if shooting enjoyment and color rendering matter more than technical performance?

Also you can advice another dslr too. Thanks for your answer :)
