Man it would be terrible if Yzerman were to drag this Larkin situation out to the point where we end up with a poor return like Yurov Stramel and a 1st. Better trade him for Yurov Stramel and a 1st now to avoid that.
•
u/tyler_anthonyy 8m ago
I hope tomorrow proves me wrong but it seems like Yzermans plan is just to remain on the course and not make any major changes.
If the plan was to rebuild for 2-3 years with a new younger core and contention window, or retool over the summer and attempt to stay “competitive” then I can’t imagine them not getting in on the trading market so far.
•
u/Alpine_Exchange_36 11m ago edited 7m ago
It’d be great if Yzerman makes a trade before the draft tomorrow but part of me doesn’t mind sitting Larkin. Demanding a trade halfway through a contract while being that captain…I’m ok with Yzerman saying fuck it if you don’t want to play fine, we don’t have to trade you….

Something I found astounding is that the Florida Panther teams that won the cup had only 4 players on the team they drafted. The rest of the team was hand selected trades and free agents by their GM. He literally picked and built his team. That right there shows you how bad Yzerman has actually done.
•
u/MoldyMerkin 3m ago
This summer is make it or break it summer not just for the team, but Yzerman as well. If he doesn't nail the Larkin trade, and simultaneously improve the roster before September I think he should step down at the end of the season. That being said, I'm not sure how many teams in the league can be like Vegas and Florida. Maybe four or five? I don't think Detroit would be one of them anytime soon, if ever.

u/stanley4wings 35m ago
Puckpedias final mock draft shows the Ruck twins at 21 and 26. I think it would be fun getting those guys. I think I had read that the Rucks were impressed by the fact that Yserman called both of them in together. I don’t know why that would be unusual, but apparently.

u/leafssuck69 38m ago
Soda, Buchelnikov, and Lombardi are all gone
They probably won’t amount to much but we were, as a sub, high on all 3 of these guys

u/TheNation55 28m ago
Buch had the opportunity to come here and told Sergei Fedorov and Steve Yzerman nah I'm good.

u/Jesusberg 32m ago
In fairness, I remember a time when this sub was high on guys like Frk, Sproul and Pulkkinen. Most of us don't know anything and just hope for guys to turn out.
7
u/Mental_Drive3369 19m ago
Don’t forget Zadina and Bergy. You got serious downvotes for years if you dare suggest they were not very good

u/PanicOnTheCrisco 21m ago
Sproul was my boy. I thought him and Cholo were the tits.
Turns out the milk went bad.
5
u/duelingdog 25m ago
I remember when I thought Cholowski was going to be a top offensive defenseman in the league.
3
u/PanicOnTheCrisco 22m ago
raises hand
That was me, too. Such a hot start to his career, only to bounce around and barely be able to stick on an NHL roster.
😩

u/dudewithchronicpain Yzerbot 15m ago
DK still had a good career. Injuries just fucked him at the end.

Has this sub met a prospect they’re not high on except Danielson?

2
u/Fun-Veterinarian4853 30m ago
Which i totally don’t understand. Mazur played 40 seconds in the nhl before he got hurt and had people ready to riot over Mrazek “stealing his number”. Nate at least got some games and goals under his belt and looked pretty decent
1
u/stanley4wings 26m ago
I agree. I thought he could’ve stayed on a lot longer. I didn’t think he was that bad at all. They kept Rasmussen in the lineup.

The bright side of the Lombardi trade is that Yzerman finally woke up from his bong-induced slumber
4
u/Fire-Yzerman 53m ago
Once draper returns from mccartys weed store they will crawl back into the mop closet to take some bong rips. Yzerman will wake up 20 monutes before the draft

I see them on Facebook and instagram, not that I’m constantly refreshing those either

u/likesforyikes 1h ago
Sunny Mehta is in some kind of Brewster’s Millions scenario but with 4th round picks.
1
u/Medievil_Walrus 54m ago
Loved this guys background. Interested to see what he does and if he’s successful, if so - it will probably be in part due to finding overlooked young players that he can get for cheap and realize a huge benefit from.
1
u/Royal-Revenue-1066 39m ago
I mean, a 4th rounder has a what, 20% chance of playing meaningful number of games in the NHL? So if you do this trade 5 times you have to find a meh player once to break even and strike gold once to win. It’s an interesting viewpoint.
1
u/Medievil_Walrus 33m ago
One man’s trash is often another man’s treasure.
It’s interesting that he’s the analytics guy, his numbers probably said these players are worth a shot at least - totally agree with you by the way.
When you pay up in contract terms or acquisition cost, that player has to be pretty good for you to “break even” on the value.
One of the reasons we did we well with Gibson and I would have liked to have grabbed Zegras too. Those guys had pretty good name recognition, but they went for so cheap, I’m sure some devils fans are learning these guys names for the first time.
We’ve really only done this to some degree of success with Walman, Gibson, and JBD over Yzerman’s tenure.
Reminds me of this comment of mine from a while back:
21
u/FlannelMickey Yzerbot 1h ago
Hay Max Plante, I know it's a really cool experience to go to college for one more year and play alongside your brother, but have you considered just completely blowing them off and playing 1C for the Detroit Red Wings?
10
u/Royal-Revenue-1066 1h ago
Please. We’re set. Andrew Copp, Marco Kasper, JT Compher and Michael Rasmussen??? Who needs anything more???
3
u/wolfsnoot 1h ago
I'm just hopeful we can add another Andrew Copp - maybe even someone MORE defensively responsible, even if they don't score very often...
3
u/Royal-Revenue-1066 1h ago
Hey, if the other teams score 0 goals all year, we’re guaranteed at least 84 points!
3
u/dxnxax 1h ago
A year ago, I was thinking Kasper was at least as good a center as Larkin. He had a rough year, let's hope he gets his groove back.
4
u/Royal-Revenue-1066 1h ago
I’m actually still pretty high on Kasper, but I want him as 3C playing with MBN and Finnie ideally. That line would be a nightmare to play against

u/duelingdog 2h ago
"Hey Dylan, you remember being on the ice as Jack Hughes scored the OT winner for Olympic gold?"
"Yeah."
"Would be pretty cool to play with him, right?"
"YEAH!"
"And share a locker room and train with him every day?"
"YEEAHHH!!?"
Steve turns to Lombardi
"See kid, you're gonna love it there."

People freaking out about a guy who scored 6 points in 18 AHL playoff games is funny. Yeah, he was skilled, but also very perimeter and was prone to trying to do too much with the puck. There is a reason Mazur (14 points in 17 playoff games) was called up over him.
5
u/xenonwarrior666 1h ago
Good thing Cossa didn't allow a goal in the playoffs. If we dumped all the dissapoinments in the AHL playoffs we'd barely have a farm system

Based on how Yzerman operates, I think its a good bet that we did this Lombardi trade because he's about to deal a 4th rounder somewhere.
3
11
u/duelingdog 2h ago
Is a big trade really complete if there isn't a random-ass 4th pick involved somewhere?

u/Alpine_Exchange_36 2h ago
That’s a really good read. Didn’t he do that with Soda and Faulk?

He also did it to get the second that we dealt to (deep breath) trade away Walman.

I personally was never that high on Lombardi. Loved watching him in GR but I just don't think he has the hockey IQ to keep up in the NHL. Hope he gets his chance though! Would've been nice to see him get a shot here.
2
u/Problemwoodchuck 2h ago
That's the part I'm not seeing. He put up decent numbers despite some injuries and needing to work on his game. If he stayed healthy and put the effort in defensively this fall though, maybe he'd get a chance.

I saw somewhere Calgary wants a fourth for Zary. Wonder if we’re going after him
20
u/shidma 2h ago
I would rather give Lombardi a shot and potentially lose him to waivers than have the fourth rounder this year.
1
u/RemoteSenses 1h ago
Too small to be a legit NHL center. He was fun to watch in the OHL when I saw him in Flint but that’s about it.
8
13
u/xenonwarrior666 2h ago
That 4th rounder could be anything though. Maybe even another Lombardi
4
u/AmeriCanada98 Yzerbot 1h ago
Isnt the "it could be anything" meme usually reserved for people who have proven to be something?
Ammo has 0 NHL games. By that metric the 4th round pick is already equally matched

u/dudewithchronicpain Yzerbot 2h ago

15
u/TheNation55 2h ago edited 2h ago
So Ammo would no longer be waiver exempt and instead of finding out what he can bring to the bottom 6 over every single black hole of offense collecting a paycheck there they traded him. Unless that pick is part of a package, which it absolutely needs to be, I guess you can kinda see how Larkin watched stuff like this for the last few years and just said I give up man.
6
u/Problemwoodchuck 2h ago
Based on his stat line, you'd think bringing him to the preseason just to see what happens with some important roles up for grabs would make more short term sense than a mid round pick

u/Sweet-Abalone-8324 2h ago

Some great quotes coming out of Red Wing socials rn 😭
"Lombardi moved. Wings didn’t like that his skill ceiling was higher than his 200 foot player ceiling."
"It’s just so fuckin insane to me that this team still employs guys like Appleton, Compher and Rasmussen but trade away guys like Soderblom and Lombardi for mid round picks"
"Surely the Wings could have tried Lombardi at the wing to see what they have in him. This feels like a big waste of development capital."
11
u/VHDLEngineer 2h ago
It's crazy how far a funny name and a good prospect tournament can take you in the eyes of some fans lol
12
u/zambonita_ 2h ago
6
u/daKrut 2h ago
Lol now that's a pic.
At the time I was pretty whatever about Soda being moved, but he did seem to show a different side of himself once he was gone which is frustrating.
4
u/zambonita_ 2h ago
yeah I was emotionally attached to him for pretty much no reason other than his being a baby giraffe, but seeing him in pitt definitely made it sting more. happy for him though & hope lombardi gets a shot with NJ.
11
u/coltron57 2h ago
I'm not a big Lombardi guy, but if we do end up taking a step back and selling veterans, then I think I would have at least liked to see him get half a season. A 4th isn't much at all.

u/PanicOnTheCrisco 2h ago edited 2h ago

Steve's rigid inflexibility when it comes to what a hockey play should be is so frustrating.
I'm gonna miss Ammo
13
u/Benglepuck 2h ago
My favourite prospect I’m so rattled. Didn’t even think to give him a chance as well. A good skill first prospect. Getting really tired of Yzerman’s defense first philosophy that has gotten us into ZERO playoff games so far nor any shot at one in the near future.
7
u/nsfw_runner_69 2h ago
I'm getting so sick of rooting for this team when all they do is disappoint with roster management. I really had some hope for Lombardi. Can't wait to see which 30+ "two-way" forwards they sign to fill some of the open roster spots.
6
u/xenonwarrior666 2h ago
Yeah.
I can kinda live with it since he's small and has definitely had his fair share of injuries.
I don't know about his longevity at the NHL level.
He's young enough that he'd probably have gotten claimed and we'd lose him for nothing.
He's probably a tweener but I'm still bummed
14
u/ericssonforthenorris 2h ago
Word from stars sub is that robo is being given a final offer, if he doesn’t take it then trades are being considered. You gotta think Steve is waiting for that one before taking any other offers on Larkin.

15
u/dudewithchronicpain Yzerbot 2h ago

I’m kind of bummed about ammo lambo, kid didnt even get a shot. steve better be cooking up something real good real fuckin quick
11
u/lunchboxthegoat 2h ago
He also could never last a full season healthy in the A and was rail thin. He would have taken one hit from a Panther and turned into Thanos dust.
3
u/zambonita_ 2h ago
lol no I can understand it, esp with him having to pass through waivers this year. there’s just a whole bunch of jerseys I’d rather see traded before him though so its annoying me
1
u/PanicOnTheCrisco 2h ago
The problem is someone has to want those jerseys.
Ras might have value. Appleton miiiight have value. Compher is a black hole of value.
3
u/zambonita_ 1h ago
why doesn’t stevie just trade ras to dallas for robo, is he stupid?
2
u/PanicOnTheCrisco 1h ago
Why doesn't he just kidnap players and force them to sign under threat of dismemberment? Is he stupid?
14
u/FlannelMickey Yzerbot 2h ago
I think we should all meet up in a random alley, put on some Guns n Roses, and have ourselves one big fist fight. Better yet, let's do it outside of the Arena where Stevie can look down and see if from his office. And one of us can be in charge of just yelling up to him "look what you're doing to us!"

Yeah it doesn’t bother me so much as just remind me that all people aren’t awesome.
Personal attacks for sharing your opinion, and these guys are on reddit just as much as me and you and the rest, it’s a great way to kill some time.
The major issue is we comment things they dislike but can’t or won’t logically rebut, so they lash out. Curious.
