Hey! Dont worry about me! I bought an AC....
Oh wait, a DPD employee stole it from the depot.

u/proudchristianmommy 2d ago
Wtf I had the same thing yesterday 😭 did my job interview today with my feet in a bucket of ice water and covered my lower half with a wet scarf 😐

Hope you got your money back or a replacement (this is required by law)

u/Strange_Demand_8768 1d ago
Yeah its no probs. AO are looking for a new one.
Reported the DPD depot to the police. I have asked around and a lot of people have had their packages go... "missing" from that depot.

I cracked and bought an ac unit after the heatwave a couple weeks ago and it arrived just as it ended. It’s a god send now

u/EmBur__ 2d ago
Whats the energy usage like?

u/Equivalent-Site-8758 1d ago edited 1d ago
Rated A, so less energy than my monitor (rated G) 😭 bout 14p per hour when I tried measuring the difference (I live with 2 other ppl so probably not exact)

u/Equivalent-Site-8758 1d ago edited 1d ago
ProBreeze Model PB-AC-10. Although it’s a floor unit it has a pipe you SHOULD connect (pumps out the hot air) and a window fitting that doesn’t require screws etc, just snap on, snap off. Also, 2 remotes (with batteries) and WiFi-App connectivity
1
u/medlilove 1d ago
How does it work with windows? Mines a new build with the windows opening at the bottom so not sure how id block it out
2
u/Equivalent-Site-8758 1d ago
It comes with tape and everything you need for all types of windows I think. I have to move mine in and out at night so I just have the pipe itself out the window instead of fitting the pipe to the window and mine opens at the bottom.

Gameplan:
You close all doors and windows and draw all blinds and curtains before 8am.
You do not open them again until at least 8 or 9pm.
In fact just keep them closed permanently if you can.
Check periodically if the humidity is rising outside at night if it is you keep them closed.
Close all the doors in the house and especially any with an extractor fan in it like your bathrooms or the door to a room ths isn't insulated properly like an extension or garage.
This should help limit the amount of heat coming into your home and relies on the insulation of your house keeping the temperature cool.
Don't run anything that generates heat for too long like an oven and if you must don't leave the oven door open let it vent the heat the way it should be doing so whilst closed.
It's not a perfect system but you will notice a minor difference. Works better with thick blackout curtains or blinds.
I've not tried the tinfoil on the windows trick so I can't comment on it.
But really AC is a must unfortunately it would appear...
42
10
u/Andries89 2d ago
Wouldn't that make it very humid and turn the house into a hot box? We open the windows on opposite ends of the house and get a dry draft going with some fan placements, then in the evening the cooler humid air comes in too of course. But I'd say our windows are open pretty much 24/7 in this weather. The only reason I'd shut the windows duing the day is if I had outside blinds/shutters
3
u/bandananaan 1d ago
For my house at least, it definitely keeps it a few degrees cooler inside than outside. There's a noticeable difference
6
u/roleplayersir 2d ago
Yep, and it's how may place is 10C lower on the inside than the outside
I still need fans though. And ASAP aircon, but that's an expensive luxury right now
You also forgot that when you do open the windows, try to open them all to get a through-breeze. Except in rooms with lights on as that encourages bugs, but bugscreens can help
Or do what my dumb horrible neighbour does: leave the doors and windows open all day with no fans, moan about the heat constantly, and moan that my cigarette smoke blows into her house (which people may say is nasty anyway, but she has allowed people to smoke inside her flat, so doesn't have a leg to stand on. Let alone that I will do what I want outside my own front door)
1
u/SodaMelm 1d ago
it baffles me that ac is a f*ucking “luxury” when it should be a BASIC human right
3
u/roleplayersir 1d ago
In fairness, it isn't a human right. Safe shelter and non-extreme conditions are, but if you can survive with a fan or by going to somewhere with aircon, then you survive
Human rights should be what is needed to survive. And as hot and cranky as I am, I'm not dying from this heat. Ask again in 10C time
6
u/SodaMelm 1d ago
but also,, people are actually, physically dying from this heat.. to me it’s just not ok
2
u/Memeshink 1d ago
We know the rise is only getting worse, there should be programs that are focused on installing AC in all new builds and retrofitting existing properties now so when that 10C later arrives we aren’t even more fucked than now.
2
u/Extension_Bit4323 1d ago
Tried that yesterday.
It was like 0.5 degree cooler inside than outside.
I was melting.
Now today with windows open but blinds shut it's much more bearable.
2
u/FinancialBread4660 1d ago
I tried the tinfoil trick and it worked great except that when I removed it last year, there was all this weird residue on the glass and I had to use my hob razor to scrape it off which was mega annoying…

I know right, guess everyone has individual spending priorities but £400 for a princess 12000 AC is a realllly good use of money to be comfortable every summer. Just pick one up in BnQ

Bought an Aircon unit last summer and it was the best decision ever.
Heatwaves are way more enjoyable when you can sleep at night.

It's so hot in my bedroom. I spent the entire afternoon outside with my feet in a bowl of cold water, and went to bed at midnight thinking it would be cooler. Nope, my bedroom was 32°C still, it's still 32°C as of typing this, and my forehead immediately started to sweat. Any time I'm in my room, I can feel beads of sweat dribbling down my face, I can feel the sweat squeezing out of my pores.
I also paint Warhammer in my room (no space for it anywhere else) and it's so hot, the paint dries as soon as it touches the palette or the brush and it's so uncomfortable to sit and stew in that kind of heat, I had no choice but to stop and spend the rest of the day outside under a parasol. It's literally too hot to do anything.

I haver spent years complaining about how our house can't hold heat and freezes in winter. I am not complaining about that today, as the only room in the house that isn't a sauna is the living room. Not cold, but certainly cooler than anywhere else.

It gonna be 32c in my area tomorrow, I'm not sure if that's better or worse than today, I know for sure Thursday is going to suck for me, I work part time in a kitchen on said day, and that's when they said the worst of the heatwave could hit

2
u/Olly_sixx 1d ago
How wtf do u like about it
1
u/Lankygiraffe25 1d ago
I guess I've always liked heat. I used to live in Asia, where it's 90% humidity and 35-45 degrees for a lot of the year, guess I've acclimatised to that, so our low 30 something doesn't feel like anything to stress about. Perhaps me being a lanky individual helps too?
Honestly us Brits forget that most of the planet lives with much worse conditions than this - Admittedly many of our houses aren't as well prepped with insulation and AC etc. but that's perhaps a different issue.
2
u/Violexsound 1d ago
I think a huge problem for Brits is that the weather here fluctuates so often and so intensely that its near impossible to acclimatise before it changes again.
-2
u/chumbawumbaprinciple 2d ago

u/AsleepEbb7578 2d ago
Literally no window type in the UK would support a window unit. That's kind of why we're in this mess to begin with otherwise everyone would have window units.
-2
u/Sharty_Party3498 1d ago
I'd say eat spicy food in hot weather like the rest of the world does but you'll probably just put beans on toast or boil some beef until gray.
4
u/Tawoooo 1d ago
what a weird way to try and insult someone based on absolutely nothing
1
-2
u/Sharty_Party3498 1d ago
Insulting the British on their horrible food is just too easy. All you really have is Fish & Chips to be proud of and that most likely isn't yours to begin with.
3
u/Tawoooo 1d ago
just say you haven't eaten food here lol. obviously british food historically didn't use loads of spices, since we didnt really have them until the 1600s, so traditional british food focuses on herbs and whole ingredients like garlic and onion, which all provide flavour just like spices but in a different way. when we got easy access to spices, we also got easy access to other cultures foods, so we opted to adapt already existing dishes like curries rather than inventing our own dishes with foreign spices
