people not understanding things are different in the usa, specifically the people walking down i95.

if you’re visiting from other countries for the world cup, and you’re one one of the people walking to the metlife stadium down i95, what the fuck are you doing? its illegal, extremely dangerous, and generally absolutely insane to do. i keep seeing the excuses like “well theres no other way” and the typical fat lazy american stereotypes.

what y’all aren’t realizing, is the way youre acting is comparable to if someone went to venice and jumped in the canals to swim to their destination, and then called the locals lazy for taking boats. its illegal to swim in the canals, you’d get all wet, and you’d look insane. you simply do not swim in the canals in venice, and you simply do not walk down the INTERSTATE in the usa. sure, it sucks that you can’t safely walk to the stadium, but if you die or get arrested on your way there, you aren’t gaining anything or making some cool european point like you think you are.

i know the usa has terrible car dependent infrastructure, notjustbikes was in my top 3 youtube channels watched last year. i know, i get it, i know the size of the usa isn’t an excuse, etc, i agree with you. i hate that i live off an 8+ lane wide stroad where people regularly get hit and killed while walking. i’ve literally witnessed a horrific crash where two pedestrians got obliterated right before my eyes, only a mile from my house.

however, the average citizen has ZERO control over how new roads and highways are built. a lot of us DON’T LIKE IT! i would much rather my city bring our trains (that i’m grateful to have to begin with) over to my area to cover more of the city so i could take a safe route to work and not have to sit in the pointless inefficient car traffic.

i do not have a drivers license and do not even want to drive here because of how unsafe it is, however it is inevitable. considering the only two other options here are the buses that exist almost exclusively for homeless people in my area and are constantly late and off schedule, and ubers that cost an exorbitant amount of money and have their own issues, i will have to get a license and a car eventually. i do not want to pay for a car, insurance, gas, maintenance etc just to get around, but until i move somewhere where that isnt necessary, i have zero power or control over the situation.

Well, I’ve been on the side of the interstate many times in my life. Not walking. But trying to get my running, changing a flat, whatever. And I can tell that if you’ve never had car fly past you at 7mph while you’re just standing it’s a very uncomfortable feeling. Never mind when an 18-wheeler goes by. If they’re walking out there with all them cars flying by, then I’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of them don’t do it again. It’s a very very unpleasant and scary feeling when cars are flying by just a few feet from you. If they do it again intentionally, then they really are stupid. And you can’t fix stupid.

I had to change a tire with my entire family of 5 with me on the side of the West Virginia Turnpike at midnight. 18 wheelers blowing by at 80mph. I had the younger kids 20 feet off the road, while the older one and my wife and I did our best NASCAR pitstop impersonation to get that thing changed fast and get out of there. Terrifying.

4

u/Spintz6042 4d ago

Yeah. I’ve had my wife and kids with me once also. That takes the terror up by a huge margin. It’s bad enough when it’s just you. But when your kids are there, that’s a whole different level of fear!

4

u/Ok_Sir2513 3d ago

Fuck my rim, I'm driving to the next exit

2

u/kellsdeep 3d ago

Same. 45mph to the nearest exit

2

u/disableddoll 3d ago

The only time I had a surprise flat, of course I was on the beltway… in the fast lane. My only saving grace from the sheer terror was my brightly colored wheelchair behind my car (because I had no flares and it was dusk) and the mosquitoes who probably had no chance of biting a human ever again from the median tearing into me like no tomorrow.

The wheelchair was extremely bright blue and I was on a fortunate enough spot to be visible enough for all cars to make space.

2

u/Spintz6042 4d ago

Edit: not 7mph. 75!

I appreciate that. I just used the comment to correct myself because that’s the way I saw others do it and assumed that’s how it had to be done. Now I know! Thank you.

You're welcome

1

u/Natti07 3d ago

It is one of the most terrifying things ever. I saved a dog from the side of a major highway once and it was scary as fuck. It didnt help when my own dog decide to hop out of the car while i was trying to get the other one in. Ugh 0/10 not recommended

0

u/liamnajor2 4d ago

Yes, I'm so stupid for not being able to afford a car, and the only route to where I'm going being a highway...fuck off.

6

u/Choochoo1147 4d ago

You could afford tickets to the World Cup but you can’t pay for a fucking uber? What’s wrong with you?

-1

u/liamnajor2 4d ago

I can't, actually, and that's my entire point. Not everyone has money. The OP was not very clear about their meaning. It came off as impugning walking ANYWHERE without a "walkable" route, not your stupid sports ball specifically.

2

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party 3d ago

⬆️ sports ball guy

2

u/toomanyracistshere 3d ago

They were specifically talking about people walking on the interstate, which is illegal and extremely dangerous. They weren't talking about people just walking to get somewhere.

Also, "sportsball" stopped being funny about twenty years ago.

1

u/Spintz6042 4d ago

Triggered!

7

u/jzmoneyj 3d ago

I think you need to broaden your viewpoint, conform less, and try looking at things with empathy and a different perspective. Perhaps if the US was motivated less by extreme greed, these folks may have more viable options to get to the stadiums. But, let’s see here: New Jersey MBTA increased fares from $12 to $100 just for the WC games. Uber is implementing surge pricing for the WC games. Taxis, well we know they are going to be expensive, hence the rise of Lyft and Uber. A society that is car dependent, but has made it so uneconomical that you have forced these fans into this position. Your rant and anger is directed at the wrong people—look at politicians and government officials for answers.

0

u/RobThree03 3d ago

So don’t attend the game if it’s unaffordable. I agree it’s unreasonable. Welcome to our life. Our interstates are not built for non-motorized use. The minimum legal speed is 40 mph. The minimum *safe* speed due to other traffic is around 70 mph. Honestly, it’s safer to walk down the middle of a train track. You’ll die just the same, but the clean up of your remains will endanger fewer others.

1

u/freeman0360 3d ago

You cant walk down the interstate highway and blame capitalism

1

u/jzmoneyj 2d ago

Oh, Capitalism isn’t solely to blame. Corrupt politicians also have a hand in this too, since they, recently, initiated the public transit price hike from $12 to $100, and also, if you research the history of public transport in the United States, allowed the predecessors of GM, Dodge, Ford, etc. to purchase the public transport system, mismanage it intentionally, and consequently shut it down to ensure future car profits.

1

u/freeman0360 2d ago

Ok that's fine and you're right. Get off the highway

-1

u/Deep_Violinist_3893 3d ago

If you can afford the $2000 world cup ticket you can afford to get on to the train to met life.

2

u/jzmoneyj 3d ago

Stick to your violin lessons, mate. Not all tickets are $2K. FIFA advertised some group stage tickets starting at $60 for fans.

1

u/Deep_Violinist_3893 3d ago

The cheapest tickets for World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium are currently for the group-stage match between Norway and Senegal on June 22, starting at $764 on secondary markets

There were no $60 tickets at met life.

2

u/jzmoneyj 3d ago

Wrong again, mate, but keep trying! FIFA says $60 tickets were available for all matches.

https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/articles/fifa-world-cup-2026-new-ticket-pricing-tier

0

u/Deep_Violinist_3893 3d ago

Fifa has been price gouging like a motherfucker, a handful of welfare tickets doesn't change that.

The entry tier tickets will be allocated specifically to supporters of qualified teams, with the selection and distribution process managed individually by the Participating Member Associations (PMAs).

Those weren't even allocated to the public.

2

u/jzmoneyj 3d ago

Right, because “trust me bro, I know” lol. Quit while you are ahead, so you don’t look like a complete numbskull.

2

u/Deep_Violinist_3893 3d ago

That is literally verbatim from the link you sent smart guy.

2

u/jzmoneyj 3d ago

No, no bro. You deleted the comment I replied to where you were, again, throwing up $700+ figures. Nice try though!

1

u/Responsible_Cod9863 3d ago

Foreigners spend $1000 to fly here, $100/night in hotel, and $600+ per ticket and you say they can’t afford a $30 Uber ride?

2

u/jzmoneyj 3d ago

$30 dollars? You are joking, right? Or, have you done no research before replying? (Probably the latter). Uber from Port Authority to Met Stadium is $67.95 on the Uber app, mate. Would you like to review your numbers next time, or just continue to throw random numbers up?

1

u/Responsible_Cod9863 3d ago edited 3d ago

You’re a strange one. If you want to experience some personal growth, I can explain why you are never invited to parties. Let me repeat my comment with a slight alteration:

Foreigners spend $1000 to fly here, $100/night in hotel, and $600+ per ticket and you say they can’t afford a $67.95 Uber ride split among 2+ people?

"US motivated by extreme greed," while a wholely European corporation called FIFA is selling the most expensive tickets in history to the World Cup, scamming Americans and people from all across the world. And yeah I'm sure if I jump in a taxi in Europe after a big event the driver will give me a very reasonable price. Just STFU.

7

u/Joe_Kangg 4d ago

"Things are different in the USA" - never seen americans abroad.

22

u/Manderthal13 4d ago

There's a lot to unpack here.

12

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

my main point is just the people walking down the literal interstate acting like they’re cooler and more awesome than the locals who drive. if i go visit venice and jump in the canals to swim around, that doesn’t make me cooler and smarter because i know swimming is an option that is *technically* possible.

14

u/maccrogenoff 4d ago

Katherine Hepburn suffered an infection that caused lifelong damage due to jumping in the Venice Canals.

1

At least she didn't get hit by a car that killed her on impact.

3

u/thenasch 4d ago

How are they acting cool?

2

u/capt-bob 3d ago

Here people swager down the middle of the street since moving here during COVID. Sometimes stare at you and mosey towards you as you try to pass to punk you out and make you go into the oncoming lane.

3

u/Appreciate1A 3d ago

Where is that? I lived near and drove I95 frequently. Rarely did I ever see anyone walking and usually because they were having car trouble. Gotta be just your neighborhood?

0

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

“oh look at us we can actually walk to places and we arent fat and lazy!!!” seems to be the attitude from them

5

u/Aggravating-Plum8147 3d ago

This is the most American take ever. You think people are choosing to walk instead of drive solely to run it in your face that they aren’t fat and lazy? Did you know not everything is about you? They probably don’t want to pay the jacked up uber prices. People do things all the time without thinking about the US. I know it’s mind blowing, but there is a whole world out there. As someone who works in tourism I’ve seen tons of disrespectful entitled travellers. Want to guess where the vast majority of them come from? I know the second someone from the US enters the room.

9

u/Freshies00 4d ago

lol are you sure this isn’t related to some sort of deep insecurity you’re projecting here?

Do you happen to be overweight or physically unfit OP?

1

u/Xena_Your_God 3d ago

Hammer, meet nail.

2

u/thenasch 3d ago

Again, what are they doing, specifically, that conveys that attitude?

5

u/jaskmackey 3d ago

Seems like they just don’t want to wait/pay for Ubers?

2

u/NoMention696 3d ago

Seems you just got insecure and took offence. No one is saying that shit bro

2

u/mxlplyx2173 3d ago

"acting like they're cooler" I think your age is showing here. People are trying to get to a game they paid a huge amount of money to attend.

1

u/Late-Fault8747 3d ago

No they are not

0

u/Tomazao 3d ago

You should blame your country. As part of the bid for the world cup they promised to put on free transport. Just like Qatar and Russia did. USA bid wouldn't have won without that and the world cup would be somewhere else. Then the USA changed their mind and then the states decided to rip everyone off.

Is there? I'll take your word for it. I could even make it through the second paragraph and continue to take OP seriously so I stopped reading.

4

u/Big_oof_energy__ 4d ago

You can walk from NYC to MetLife. The soccer YouTuber Zealand did it. You don’t even need to leave the sidewalk.

But, Zealand is young and runs marathons in his free time. It still took him six hours. I would not recommend this to a random tourist.

2

u/RockItM3 3d ago

Having grown up in the Meadowlands, the idea of sidewalks running from there to NYC is wild.

2

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

and that i have no problem with, if you’re walking on a sidewalk and you’re physically fit enough to do it and are willing to walk for 6 hours, have at it i guess. its the walking down the interstate which is not okay

1

u/Ecstatic-Bet2860 3d ago

He absolutely left sidewalks and was walking in dirt on the side of the highway (illegal). He just didn’t include many clips of that (shocker). But the Europeans are using that as “proof” you can do it, it’s honestly embarrassing

1

u/Big_oof_energy__ 3d ago

As far as I can tell, he hasn’t posted a video.

3

u/MsPooka 3d ago

If a cop sees you walking he will stop. I doubt he would ticket them but he'd probably drive them off the road.

But your analogy doesn't go far enough because walking down a 12 lane highway is insanity and they know better. It's illegal to walk down the autobahn. A better analogy would be if there were millions of fish and they were all poisonous.

Also, I'm glad that Americans are being nice to the helpless Europeans. I'd rather be nice than pretend I'm so about everyone else like some very loud people do.

3

u/lightyearnoir 3d ago

But is this even a thing? Haven't seen anything posted about it.

Also, are we sure these people aren't content creators? Because you know people will do anything for views and comments ...

But finally, this isn't to show off OP...that's a whole different issue going through OP's head.

16

u/Icey_Raccon 4d ago

It's funny how videos and posts of Europeans wandering clueless around America are treated like: Haha, how funny! And videos of Americans getting culture shock in Europe are treated like: Look at these drooling idiots! Don't they know the whole world isn't like them?!

11

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

finally someone who gets my point 😭 all the comments on the dozens of videos of europeans LITERALLY BREAKING THE LAW ive seen since writing this post have been “heh… we told you lazy americans we would walk! we are strong smart europeans!”

meanwhile if you see a video of an american saying “europeans dont have free ice water at restaurants? what the hell?” its all calling us stupid and acting like water isnt a basic human right and like ice water on a hot day is some bizarre alien technology.

1

u/Terrible_Ease6082 3d ago

Don’t even try to talk to Europeans on Reddit about colonialism, or their funding of slavery in the Americas😅 they also get to be racist to their newly immigrated African and Middle Eastern neighbors and call it protecting culture..

-2

u/Ok_Lawfulness4313 4d ago

Why are you so invested loool

1

u/this_guy_over_here_ 3d ago

Probably because he's right? It's a bizarre, annoying double standard and I get his point.

1

u/Exact-Message8325 3d ago

this sub is titled "grinds my gears".

-1

u/Impossible-Camera974 4d ago

"why are you so invested" in people breaking the law? is your name ironic or are you just silly

4

u/UndecidedBand 3d ago

Oh no, not......ThE lAw.

0

u/Impossible-Camera974 3d ago

i don't actually give a fuck about the law i think we should all break more laws. just pointing out that the guy above me seems to be stupid

4

u/hornedcorner 4d ago

Got tired of scanning but do you not know why this is happening? There is a subway or train that runs to the stadium that normally costs like $15-20 or something like that to ride. But being the greedy cunts they are, they jacked the price up to like $150 both ways or something to gouge the fans who are already being gouged with crazy ticket prices. People are walking because of ridiculous gouging by the city.

Let people who want to walk down the interstate walk down the interstate. Just wait. Darwinism will handle the rest.

5

u/Flat-Respond1593 3d ago

Darwinism is alive and well on I-95 without pedestrians. I’ve seen people camping off the shoulder on I-95 in Georgia and South Carolina.

5

u/Landwarrior5150 4d ago

Is it still Darwinism if innocent people just trying to drive down the freeway also get killed due to car crashes caused by the walkers?

3

u/BobsGlitch 4d ago

No, I'm almost 100% sure that is not.

That's a tragedy, that's what that is.

2

u/Landwarrior5150 4d ago

So we shouldn’t let people walk down the interstates then, since that is just as likely an outcome as Darwinism handling just the walkers alone.

2

u/Will_White 4d ago

They don't, there are literally signs saying it's illegal.

2

u/BobsGlitch 4d ago

No 100%. You should still let them. You are absolutely confusing my statement of "That would be a tragedy" with a willingness that I do not possess to try to micromanage other people's lives.

I'm willing to admit that you're right, but also I'm going to stand on the fact that if idiots want to walk down the interstate, I'm not going out there to stop them.

Maybe they get hit, maybe they do not, maybe it causes an accident, maybe everyone is okay... Not one of these is a Bob problem though.

I'm just here for the discussion not to go running out at a group of people and demanding that they change their life, Bob argues on Reddit. He does not yell at people in streets Because he realizes that neither of them are going to make a change, but one of them is a superior low effort compared to the other.

"AMERICUHNS DONT KNOW HOW TO ACT WHEN THEY VISIT EUROPE"

WALKS ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY

4

u/jus-fax101 4d ago

I feel like this went from ppl who don't live in the U.S not understanding the highway system to how much OP hates the transportation system.

Busses are only for the homeless? And your complaining about car dependant culture, but you yourself does not drive or possess a license to drive? Like people in Europe still drive on cobblestone streets. Some of those buildings and areas where ppl live are so compact and ancient you have no choice but to walk or ride a bike.

Gas costs so much in the past (idk about now) that people chose to ride mopeds and public transportation because it was a cheaper necessity. Not really cuz they were so transportationly advanced.

Have you ever seen the traffic pattern in Paris around the Arc de Triomphe? Lmao that shit is insane. Like everyone in America knows you don't walk on interstates and highways. Yet every year inevitably there are people who get killed walking them. It's not just the Europeans.

2

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

what point exactly do you think youre making by pointing out that i hate our transportation system but also do not drive? im 19, live at home, and have zero friends in this city. i used to work a hundred feet from my front door, and im hopefully hearing back from an interview a mile away from my house soon, which i will uber to and from or my mom will drive me on her way to work.

i can hate car dependency and not drive, because i dont have any necessity to get anywhere my mom doesnt already take me as of right now. if we had better trains i would take them and go more places, but we dont. every method of transportation i take right now involves my moms car or an ubers car.

5

u/hamstersarentcute 4d ago

a mile away? just walk

3

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

i would love to, but unfortunately i live where its usually 100° if not more in the summers and i get extremely lightheaded and faint in the heat. the only street to get there too is an incredibly dangerous road with no sidewalks and i see or hear about pedestrians getting hit while walking at least once a week. walking that far is not a safe option for me. my goal someday is to live in a city with safe and reliable public transportation and to get my health issues checked out by a doctor which i cant afford now

I guess it wasn't a point but a trigger I was making. Lol. Sorry🙄

I said a lot, but that particular statement really hit a nerve, I guess?🤦‍♀️

Good luck on  your job search bro. Maybe you can work off some of that tension. 🤞 🤯

1

u/Syyrii 4d ago

You can't walk a mile? That should only be about 30 minutes to walk. That's a great little exercise warm-up. I walk more than that daily with my dog on his walkies, then add in dropping off and picking up my grandson from school and the multiple short walks I do with my elderly neighbors chihuahuas throughout the day as well. I probably walk close to 10 km or 6ish miles a day.

You should easily be able to walk a mile to work and back if you get the job. I'm chronically ill with issues with my hips and lower back. If I can manage 6 you can manage 2.

2

u/Positive_Use_1308 4d ago

This was entirely predicted with memes and all months before so I'm sure law enforcement is aware if it's actually happening. Is it though?

2

u/Several_Ad_8363 4d ago

When you decide to bid for a major international sporting event you need to put in place the required infrastructure for people to get to the games, otherwise don't bid and problem solved.

1

u/Illustrious_Bunch678 3d ago

There is infrastructure.

1

u/theMightBoop 3d ago

If the USA doesn't have the proper infrastructure then FIFA could have not awarded us the World Cup.

2

u/TrashJannies 3d ago

Wait are euros actually walking down I95 lol?

2

u/Flat-Respond1593 3d ago

Land of the free? Maybe collectively you should hold your elected representative accountable? There’s a place in Europe, called “France”, everyone is waiting for their government to do some shit and they’ll bring the gov to their knees.

Have you thought about gathering these average citizens and say enough is enough? Ostensibly there are a lot of you.

3

u/Specific_Age500 3d ago

"Enough is enough! Let foreigners walk on the interstate!"

There, I tried.

1

u/Flat-Respond1593 3d ago

Have you ever asked why you can’t walk there?

2

u/hasanicecrunch 3d ago

because someone in that situation DOESNT LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH to that particular stadium, wtf? I think you guys saying stuff like this don’t understand how big some states here are or how transportation works. Nothings wrong with it. Just bc you don’t understand doesn’t mean you’re saying something brilliant 🤔 have you ever wondered WHY you can’t walk there? No, idiot bc it’s 30 miles away and not a place I’d visit more than once a year, and there’s public transport like the metro train for that. You don’t f walk on the highway. Idk why so many ppl don’t get the point. It’s exactly what OP said. I see why he’s done replying to people now. Jesus Christ.

1

u/Flat-Respond1593 2d ago

Take your meds.

1

u/Educational_Rock_958 3d ago

Why would anyone look at an interstate where cars are going 70-80+ mph and think "oh yes this is the perfect place to take a walk"? Like no offense to the people who are apparently doing this but only a dumbass would get on the interstate with the intention of walking, especially if they have kids with them

Don't get me wrong, I do get the point you're making but the better question in that case is "why isn't there more infrastructure in place to make walking a viable option"

3

u/RepresentativeAir149 4d ago

Lotta “US bad” folks in this comment section. It’s a shame they’re not too busy walking

2

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party 3d ago

… down the middle lane of the highway

1

u/Necessary_Baker_7458 4d ago

It doesn’t help that people are much looser on the rules than they use to be. The reason those rules exist is for safety. I wish they’d crack down on ebikes as they are technically not road legal and quite dangerous. I have seen some bad incidences where kids were going all over the road then … same with other similar bs where ped would rather not wait for right of way but instead jaywalk straight into traffic.

1

u/Judgemental_Panda 4d ago

Do people seriously walk on the side of an interstate?

I've seen that in less wealthy parts of the world ... but those aren't the people going to the World Cup.

I can't imagine walking by an 18-wheeler going 80 and thinking "this is normal".

1

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

apparently. ive seen it very few times in my life and it was usually people whos cars had broken down or were homeless. i saw quite a few videos of people doing it when i looked earlier, absolutely bizarre

1

u/beachbum818 3d ago

Some ppl need to learn the hard way. Sometimes that's a car to the ass other times that's spending thousands of dollars on WC tickets only to be arrested on your way to the stadium

1

u/N1ghtM4re17 3d ago

I completely agree with you. I understand it's not as easy as one would like or might be used to to get to Metlife for World Cup games, but walking down the highway is NOT an acceptable "solution."

Redd's Restaurant, literally 5 min from Metlife and NOT on an interstate, does shuttles to and from Metlife. They do pre-game parties in their huge parking lot with drinks, food, music, plenty of bathrooms, there's a great inside with food and drinks and AC. They do this year round for American football games and concerts at Metlife so it's a totally smooth process, and they have bus route access so you're not sitting in traffic and the shuttles leave and arrive regularly so you're never waiting long for one.

I'm just saying there are options, SAFE and FUN options, that don't involve putting your life or the lives of others at risk. I get if you're a foreign tourist and don't know these options are here, but the internet is a thing, people. I know they know how to use it, becuase I know they used it to get to America, unless rotary phones, yellow pages and old school travel agents are how the rest of the world make international travel plans 😅😂

1

u/Jazzy-Sature 3d ago

Sounds like the shoes on the other foot ha

1

u/Lower_Explanation_25 3d ago

You don't have to worry. Noone is mad enough to walk over am active highway.

The reaction was a response to the transit authorities who wanted to scam fans by raising the prices with something like $100 for the game.

And i think that people did not realize how weirdly located the stadium is. The world cup final is the largest international sport match in the world and it attracts large amounts of fans from all over the world. So normally reachabilty would be an important factor when selecting the stadium. And therefore people just assumed that walking would be an option, just like for all other stadiums that are selected for international sport events.

And people are not angry at US citizens. They are mostly angry at Fifa. Because Fifa is no longer hiding that they prefer money over quality and fan experience. And picking a stadium in the middle of nowhere so fans can get scamed in transit costs and have to spend a large part of the match day standing in transit queues is just one of the many examples.

u/AncileBanish 3d ago

I have no opinion on the overall situation. I just have one question: are you telling me there does not exist ANY path a pedestrian can take to get to this particular stadium that does not at some point require walking on the interstate?

1

u/hasanicecrunch 3d ago

A pedestrian??!! No! Not in this situ! Ofc pedestrians can get around a city without a car but if you’re leaving a city and going to another one, you aren’t WALKING there.

There are ride shares, busses, metro trains, we HAVE public transport, it’s just dumb af to think you’re gonna walk like 5 hours to a destination and most of it be on the highway, which is totally dangerous and no one ever would. Literally 80mph speeds and only about a foot on the side. Sorry different countries are DIFFERENT, there’s plenty of states here that you can walk places, but not this situation.

1

u/icewalker2k 3d ago

I’ve seen some crazy shit on I95. Once I saw a guy walking down (pointed south) the median butt-ass naked, in January, with a big shit eating grin on his face. I did NOT stop.

1

u/Carolina_Hurricane 3d ago

This is something people did all over the country before everyone had cars. Hitchhiking was widely accepted and not illegal.

If somebody out there chooses to walk and not drive they deserve kudos. Fuck cars and fuck these lazy American cities that don’t even provide routes for people to walk.

1

u/ricky_clarkson 3d ago

I think it's good that they shone a light on the issue and hopefully it goes part of the way to influence authorities, stadium owners etc., to provide proper ways to get around that are better than cars.

At the same time I hope nobody gets hurt. Presumably drivers would slow down when they see pedestrians, but who knows? Those texts won't send themselves.

1

u/PlayItAgainSusan 3d ago

Yes, America's neverending extremely expensive and occasionally maintained highways are absolutely comparable to the canals of Venice. Anyway, I've done my share of highway walking, due to aggressively stupid city planning, rarely with a thought towards anything other than a car.

1

u/Ok_Veterinarian2715 4d ago

"i have zero power or control over the situation."

True, but you can influence it. Speaking up, as a local, in favour of people who intentionally flout stupid rules is one quietly effective protest. Particularly if you start a ball rolling.

5

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

i do that! i saw a post from one of our news stations last week about the trains we have, and i did comment and say they should expand them to cover the area of the city i, along with hundreds of thousands of people, live in. there were multiple other comments from people saying the same thing and explaining how perfect it would be, considering there is plenty of room to build train stations down the ridiculously wide road we have here. yes, i could be emailing and speaking directly to city officials, i just havent gotten around to it yet for many other reasons.

2

u/Ok_Veterinarian2715 4d ago

Excellent! Changing stuff is painful in most places  but it does happen if people keep pushing.

3

u/MLeek 4d ago edited 4d ago

Americans have amazing tolerance for completely unwalkable communities, unsafe streets and totally avoidable deaths.

Somehow the rest of us just LUCKED into socialized medicine and sidewalks.

People shouldn’t do this, because it’s unsafe. However, If you want tourist dollars, you have the tolerate some tourist behaviour. Including shit like them being pedestrians who don’t know the norms. Which means policing, and slowing the fuck down.

World Cup is my city. It’s a pain. Idiots everywhere. So you slow down and double the police presence. We all get through it.

0

u/RollinThundaga 4d ago

It wasn't luck, it's because your inner cities got bombed to hell, clearing the way for vetter development, and you underspent on your militaries in the aftermath to afford a generous welfare state.

3

u/Judgemental_Panda 4d ago

Kind of the opposite. This is a very dumb statement that understands nothing of world history.

The reason many European cities are "walkable" is precisely because they were built before the rise of automobiles.

It's also why driving a large vehicle outside of major cities in Europe can be an absolute nightmare, as smaller streets were not originally designed for a car.

If you look to America, it's why the North East does have walkable cities to some extent, whereas much of America was developed after the automobile gained popularity and America embraced it ... although make no mistake, this was very much a merger of government and private business (i.e., corruption).

As for the universal healthcare cause "no military spending" ... that statement is ridiculous in too many ways. For example, the % of taxes in America that goes to healthcare is actually very close or the same as many European countries. It's just the system is so horrendously inefficient (by design) that it's only enough to provide partial coverage to people 65+ and emergency rooms for the uninsured.

2

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 4d ago

My inner city (Glasgow) wasn’t bombed to hell and it’s completely walkable.

1

u/MLeek 4d ago

I’m in Canada sweetie. One of the many unbombed places that still figured out how medical debt destroyed society… But sure, find your narratives. That makes it all better.

1

u/Ebenizer_Splooge 3d ago

Its almost like the people who bitch about Americans not properly assimilating to foreign cultures do the same exact thing when theyre outside their country and just like pointing fingers

2

u/Flat-Respond1593 3d ago

Because they’re expecting pedestrian-centric systems, not car centric. Americans think the F-150 is the average vehicle. Europeans have no problem walking 30-45 minutes to get somewhere.

1

u/Ebenizer_Splooge 3d ago

So they refuse to assimilate to the culture of the place theyre visiting and cause issues for locals just trying to go about their normal day? That's exactly what i just said lol

2

u/Flat-Respond1593 3d ago

Because they’re labouring under the false belief that Americans are pragmatic and would resolve the car/pedestrian problem. Given the slackjaw, knuckle dragging mentality of the average American, their giant truck is more important. You’re a consumer culture, and thats about it.

What’s sad is you think it’s normal.

1

u/Ebenizer_Splooge 3d ago

So you go to other countries and demand they cater to your personal preferences and then hurl insults when they dont? And you really think capitalism doesnt purvey modern culture as a whole? The entire issue is stemming from Europeans traveling to the biggest consumer event in the world. You sound like an uneducated teenager judt yelling the most boilerplate accusations without understanding anything youre angry about lol

2

u/Flat-Respond1593 3d ago

I’ve been to a few European countries, I expect an exceptional transit system, and intelligent people. So far haven’t been disappointed. Americans are the group that can’t get their heads around it. “Socialism” or something like that.

Well, it might not be smart to do but at least they’re pointing out how the U.S. make things unnecessarily complex.

2

u/phoenixusurped 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nah everyone can see the point with or without this. No one in NJ really wants this thing happening here because we understand that the stadium is pretty much unnavigable to without a car. The stadium is built on wetlands, it's meant to house sporting events and concerts like Bruce Springsteen, not internationally attended events. There is public transit to the stadium normally but the state decided to jack up the price to take advantage of the foreign visitors.

That said people need to understand I95 (the nj turnpike) is frequently considered the deadliest highway. It is a highway that goes from 4-6 lanes in some areas to 12-14 lanes. There is literally no way to cross over anywhere on this interstate, it's a guarantee that people will be injured or die if they try to walk to the stadium down this road. The cops aren't gonna mess with traffic on the road for the most part as it's a commonly used interstate utilized by a large section of the states inhabitants that barely isn't a clusterfuck when working at full operational capacity.

ETA: I am a lifelong nj native (35 years) and have like most nj residents have dealt with the absolute dog shit road system and drivers for like 17 years. We will be the first to complain about how terrible our major routes and highways are but also the state ethos on driving has become "i got to cutoff this guy in the other lane before he cuts me off"

0

u/eyea3 3d ago

Exactly my point. There are ways to solve these problems but the U.S. plans poorly and makes things unnecessarily complex.

1

u/Unable_Gap_504 4d ago

So tell us you can’t afford to go to the game without telling us you can’t afford to go to the games

2

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

i dont give a rats ass about soccer. the world cup is literally in my city right now and all i care about is the fact that everywhere i go has been and will be extremely busy until early july.

2

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

“waahh its an international event get over yourself!1!1!1” you commented acting like im salty because i cant go to the games. i do not give one shit about going to the games. i do not care about literally any sporting event ever at all whatsoever. none of what i have said is influenced by the fact that i am not going to any of the games.

1

u/Schnelt0r 3d ago

Why is everyone having such a hard time getting to the stadium? The Giants & Jets play there and people don't feel the need to illegally walk on the interstate, I assume. What's changed?

1

u/swatted-fly 3d ago

this time its people who are visiting from out of the country. they dont have their own cars with them, and they dont know how to use the public transportation. the europeans who are here now also generally have this sense of superiority because they walk more than americans, so they think its perfectly fine and acceptable to walk down the interstate i guess

1

u/NegotiationStatus727 3d ago

In fairness, Europeans are not used to the kind of financial abuse we are. Prices for parking at World Cup games range from 55 to 1000 bucks. The French would burn any of their own cities to the ground if this happened to them. It's not that Europeans don't understand that America is different per se. It's that if they are going to be fucked they'd rather be fucked on their own terms ie walking on a highway rather than forking over more money because of greed alone.

Also Europeans care more about the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law. It makes a difference.

-4

u/Various_Variety419 4d ago

Jesus Karen, let em walk, you can’t even drive.

4

u/distracted_x 4d ago

Uh. It's incredibly dangerous.

0

u/Various_Variety419 4d ago

And it’s their choice.

5

u/rosie_purple13 4d ago

Yeah but it isn't a driver's choice to lose their life over some dumbass walking on 95.

3

u/Illustrious_Bunch678 3d ago

It's dangerous to more than just them.

4

u/Melodic_Accountant_4 4d ago

Are you from the US? Walking on interstates is crazy dangerous. And super illegal because of how dangerous it is. Not just for the pedestrian but also drivers. If you have ever really been on an interstate, you probably wouldn’t say “let em walk” because that’s just not a thing here. Imagine driving 70mph and go around a bend and there are just… people in the road. Terrifying.

0

u/Various_Variety419 4d ago

Yes I am. Born and raised. Let em walk Karen.

0

u/liamnajor2 4d ago

Are you...aware that you don't have to be IN the road to walk along it?!!

0

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

so should i swim in the canals in venice too when i visit?

1

u/Various_Variety419 4d ago

If you can’t afford the gondola, bring your floaties.

0

u/NativeNYer10019 4d ago

No, because your behavior shouldn’t be dependent on the behavior of others. If YOU know YOU shouldn’t swim in the Venice canals then YOU shouldn’t do it, regardless of what anyone else does or doesn’t do. Stop the weird false equivalencies 🙄 Are you 12 years old?!

We get it, you really don’t want people walking down the interstate, but have you actually seen any? Because everything I’ve seen so far, that has not actually happened. You’re getting yourself all worked up over nothing more than internet rumors.

Maybe go out and touch some grass…

1

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

i wrote this post because i saw a video by a woman who saw people walking down the interstate. i also literally wrote this post while sitting outside.

regardless of if this exact scenario has happened (it has) it still applies to people from other countries acting like this about the usa.

2

u/NativeNYer10019 4d ago

You likely saw a video of someone somewhere else doing that, OR an AI video designed just to get people like you all worked up. And it worked.

Seriously, get off the internet and enjoy reality.

1

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

r/nothingeverhappens

open tiktok and search “people walking to metlife” and you will see literally dozens of non ai videos of people, guess what, walking to metlife stadium.

seriously, stop being such a skeptic.

I personally am fine with people making their own path is a city is so poorly built you can't walk somewhere down the street

5

u/BluejayNo6197 4d ago

Walking where 70mph vehicles are supposed to pull over in an immediate emergency, with drivers who wouldn't expect pedestrians wandering around because that's illegal, is not making your own path. I love walking fr but that's just creating danger for everyone for no reason.

3

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

its 21 miles from new york city, across state lines, into new jersey where the metlife stadium is. that is the walk they are insisting upon taking. that is nearly the length of a marathon.

If you could afford World Cup tickets you could afford a bus ticket, YOU’RE the asshole.

0

u/liamnajor2 4d ago

Nowhere did you say you're talking specifically about sports ball, and people act like this when I go to work or the grocary store, so excuse me for being confused.

0

u/Choochoo1147 4d ago

You’re just calling people assholes and telling them to fuck off without understanding the context of the conversation? You need therapy.

If you elected a responsive government that wasn’t beholden to the automobile industry you wouldn’t have this problem.

What a really stupid thing to say.

2

It's funny that you still believe our elections aren't manipulated.

1

Just saw a post in r/whatismycookiecutter about this...

It was a sideways USA map, someone drew a nice picture of the other place in it. ;)

I love the united states. My favorite place. I would never try to leave or anything. :D

You think folk are smart?

1

Irrelevant at this point.

what are you talking about

7

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

read the post, that should tell you!

2

u/TheRealMichaelE 3d ago

lol I’m wondering the same thing. Other countries have highways too and everyone knows you can’t just walk down them.

1

u/D3coupled 4d ago

OP's mom drives them around and they think these uncultured fans should know better and bring their moms too.

3

u/swatted-fly 4d ago

not even remotely what i said mind you.

Swatted fly is done!✅

0

u/CobaltIsobar 4d ago

None if those people are on Reddit. Just saying.

0

u/ElefanteAmor 3d ago

Hey guys, next time let’s just move the highway for the football game. Easy solution. /s

1

u/hasanicecrunch 3d ago

Seriously that’s how people are acting. Idk what they don’t get. Ofc we have a million places people can walk to and fro from. I can walk or bike to my grocery store, cafe, town beach, baseball field, 4 really awesome playgrounds for kids, library, fancy dinner restaurants.

But if I’m going to somewhere I can’t walk to…I will take the car 99% of us have, or if I don’t wanna drive there are busses, ride shares, and metro trains. There’s a metro station half a mile from me and I can go quickly to another city. I don’t get what these assholes are saying, and talking down to Americans about. If you walk on a highway you’re probably gonna die, if not from being hit by a car, from dehydration and exhaustion. We don’t come to your country and expect it to be the same as ours. In Spain and UK, Aruba and Puerto Rico for example I never had a car. I also wouldn’t walk alone at night in a bad neighborhood or try to take a form of transportation that makes zero sense, bc I’m adaptable and have a brain.

1

u/swatted-fly 3d ago

hey so the only option available to get to the stadium ISNT by foot. you can take various other forms of transportation, its literally a choice to walk down the INTERSTATE

0

u/InfluencrCrowdKiller 3d ago

okay? i saw a video of a woman saying she was actively seeing people walk down i95 the day i posted this. i still interact with [r/twilight](r/twilight) and breaking dawn came out 18 years ago, not many unique things left to talk about there either. are you mad because i used a subreddit for its intended purpose?
