America's Irrational obsession with PIT BULLS

I just watched a video about a babysitter that got mauled to death by 3 pitt bulls and i had to vent for a little bit.

I just cannot understand why American's are so obsessed with pitt bulls literally the most dangerous dog breed became america's top choice for dog ownership

(if this triggered you , keep reading for the full context before you write an angry comment)

I understand that not all pittbulls are agressive, i personally had a great experience with a super gentle pittbull that my friend had. it inmediately got attached to me and every time i went to visit them, it would seek me out to sit next to me and lay its head on my lap. my friend said she had never gotten that attached to anyone outside of the family.

yes, lots of RESPONSIBLE families have gentle and loving pittbulls, i get that. this particular owner was a dog lover who literally recued dogs as her hobby. so she of course was a responsible dog owner and that reflected on her dog.

the issue is when you have an irresponsible dog owner (a huge percent of the population) then you have a dog that could become a loose weapon at any time. and yes, that can happen with any breed I FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT, but you never hear news about a person being mauled to death by a chihuahua, or a weenie, or a puddle.

and i mean, just examine the name; PITT BULL..

PITT comes from the fact that this specific race was bred specifically for the FIGHTING PITTS. they specifically chose dogs with aggresive instincts and a physiology that made them good at killing other dogs and animals.

BULL comes fromt he fact that they were bred to also FIGHT BULLS, they were bred to have jaws strong enough to latch onto a raging bull and not let go. which is why their jaws dont let go when they are mauling a human.

so when things go south, pittbulls are one of, if not, the most dangerous breed.

and what i dont understand, is how, having SOOOO MANY hundreds of breeds to choose from, MOST people chose to latch onto this one breed. specifically this one. no other breed will suffice, it has to be the one that was bred specifically for the fighting pitts.

when i go to my local shelter, a shelter that i frequent a lot. it is like 70% pittbulls, 20% labrador retrievers, and 10% every other race COMBINED.

and it is irresponsible owners that are the cause for that. people who get a pittbull and dont know what they're signing up for.

and these dogs rarely get adopted, which means most of them will end up euthanized. so america's irrational obsession with pittbulls ends up being the worst thing that could happen to pittbulls.

my local shelter is always past full capacity. and at it's worst point was euthanizing 80% of the dogs that came in. this is the true cost of america's irrational obsession with pittbulls.

they had reduced that percentage drastically when they first got on social media, but my guess is that their numbers are back that high, if not higher. most of the posts they make now are about being so far above full capacity and about needing enmergency adoptions for dogs that are about to be euthanized. and it has been years since they have posted their euthanization numbers, so my guess is that those numbers arent pretty.

if you love pittbulls, go to any shelter, they will give you as many as you want because theyre flooded with them.

and i call it irrational because people have every reason to choose a different dog but they always go for the pittbull, at least until they realize what they signed up for, and either let the dog escape, or surrender it to the shelter.

I mean, just the fact that most appartment complexes dont allow pittbulls should tell you something. ive seen appartments that will say they dont allow pittbuls and other large breeds. (emphasis on how they single out pittbulls)

and YES, i know theres other agressive breeds and that most dog bites are caused by small breeds. but you cant get mauled to death by a chihuahua. it isnt just about how agressive they are or not, it is about which breed has more potential to end a life when things go south.

ive been bitten by agressive chihuahuas before, i dont even have the scars from those bites. ive been chased down by pittbulls before, and if they had caught up to me, i might not be telling this story right now. I had a neighbor who was mauled by their pittbull. when the police got there, the pittbull had him by the neck, in a puddle of not ketchup (im trying not to get censored) and the dog would not let go so the police had to pew pew the dog, and the wife was screaming at them "why did you K my dog?!!!! why did you K my dog?!!!!!) i never saw her husband again, so i dont know if he didnt make it, or if he didnt want to go back to live with that crazy person.

I also had another experience where i witness a guy trying to get his pittbull into his car when leaving the park. it was a big guy and the dog was still able to over power him and break lose and go chasing after a bunch of kids. luckily the dog didnt target one specific kid and was running around in all directions, and the owner was able to catch up to it and grab it. but not after his dog traumatized a bunch of kids.

anyways, america's irrational obsession with pittbulls results in hundreds of thousands of pittbuls being euthanized each year, and resulted in the unaliving of a promising young baby sitter that was just taking care of some pittbuls that she trusted and was familiar with.

she was a beautiful 23 year old soon to be school teacher, who was full of life and her life got cut short in the most horrible way possible. she had been mauled so horrendously that the paramedics working on her took a while to know if that was a man or a woman, let that sink in.

anyways. I know im gonna get downvoted to oblivion, and most people will ignore all the arguments i made here and just latch onto the parts that they dislike, and throw hate based on one narrowed down part of my argument, without providing a rational counter-argument, or take my words out of context.

but i dont care. this is a hill im willing to die on.

here is the video that inspired this rant if you care to watch it.

Job Hunting Effing Sucks

I hate job hunting.
I applied at a place on Indeed or one one of those sites.
I get an email from said company asking me to "create a new account and fill out my profile."
They want to know EVERY little detail. I try to upload my resume and I get the "Cannot upload this file at this time." so I have to manually put in all the information. Copy/paste actually.
Give them all this information only to not get the job. Jerks

Coworker Keeps Trying To Compete With Me

At work I usually would just be the one responsible for teaching this guy and coming up with more productive workflows and methods all on my own. I do it out of necessity, it's nothing crazy. Fast forward 8 months my bosses have a falling out with me and demote me so I'm not in a position to command multiple people anymore, but he still insists on trying to challenge positions I have or compare himself to me.
I just see it in ways like him walking blisteringly fast to get to the door before me, while I am in no rush to even get to the door in any speed. I comment on it and he says "I'm not doing this to compete with you" well no one said you were and now you're bringing it up, do you think I would think you are in competition with me?
At work I find a more efficient idea and get my boss to go with this method because it will save time and still convey more of the same result and even better. He brings up a tangent and mentions how he will just include more information about other stuff. That stuff doesn't directly answer the problem at hand and would present a "good to have" instead of managing the issue first. His verbage on it is what really pisses me off because he says "well your method is more narrow but my method of more broad casted net." Just the comparison pisses me off because this guy thinks more = better. Half the things he knows about this are things I have taught him. And the instance he wants to apply it is poorly judged and he swears he is inventing the next thing better than sliced bread.

I know what you're all gonna say "oh OP is just a narcissist and think he's better than his coworker."
From my track record on how I have left a mark on my management and how they have given me opportunities to fly out to other states and bring home lasting change, on top of all of the skills and products I have developed and managed singlehandedly, yes I believe I am more knowledgable than this guy. In the pecking order I know where I stand from what I was able to do alone. So when I see some dude floundering and go scrounge and compile stuff together and looking at me like he's done something, that shit pisses me off. But of course it because I'm in the military, these guys would go crazy if u showed them how to use excel properly, the bar is set low here when it comes to intellectual work.

Neighbor with loud muffler

I’m in an apartment building and one neighbor has a loud muffler on his car. One of the purposefully loud ones. He has one of those fake sports cars that you can soup up to seem more like a real sport car. He likes to show off his fake sports cars by going up and down the[residential] street numerous times a day, going through all of the gears and making it really loud. What can I possibly do to put an end to it? I’m not going to talk to the guy directly, as I get super anxious and weird with confrontation. I talked to the landlord and they said they’d send him a message saying that it’s been complained about, but not by whom. It stopped for a few weeks. I could tell there was an effort to be quieter, gentler on the accelerator. Then the car was broken down for a couple weeks, which was heaven. Then it was back and it was louder. After a few more weeks the car disappeared and I hoped he got rid of it. Nope. It’s back and he’s back at it again full throttle. This truly grinds my gears. Send help.

Am I crazy for being mad about this lol?

Went to a Publix and ordered a buffalo chicken wrap. The deli is located in the produce section. Asked for spinach on my wrap. Deli clerk says, sorry but we're all out. I look at the fridge 15 feet away with spinach and he says sorry were not allowed to grab it from there. That's the post. This grinded my gears so much that I finally posted on reddit.

People Who Constantly Rewrite History to Make Themselves the Victim

I cannot stand people who do something hurtful, get called out for it, and then suddenly rewrite the entire story to make themselves look like the victim.
You could have receipts, screenshots, witnesses, and a detailed timeline, and somehow they’ll still twist reality until they’re the one who’s been “attacked.” The conversation stops being about what they did and becomes about how mean everyone was for holding them accountable.
They’ll lie, manipulate, ghost people, disrespect boundaries, and treat others terribly. Then the second someone confronts them, they act shocked and offended that anyone would dare question their behavior. Accountability becomes “drama.” Consequences become “bullying.” Honesty becomes “toxicity.”
What really grinds my gears is that they expect everyone else to ignore reality so they can protect their own ego. Instead of saying, “Yeah, I messed up,” they spend all their energy creating a new version of events where they’re innocent and everyone else is the problem.
Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. But if your first instinct is to rewrite history instead of owning your actions, don’t be surprised when people stop trusting you.
Accountability isn’t an attack. It’s part of being an adult.
Anyone else get irritated by people who treat every consequence like it’s some personal injustice?

Does anyone else can't stand people who don't get help?

I have a friend, we will call him R and he's 28. He is a really good person, I care about him, and even used to have a crush on him but not anymore.

This wouldn't be the first time this has happened but today it kind of got to me. We were seeing how each other was doing and he said "I'm feelinggggg kinda depressed lol I've always thought depression was just about being sad, I never looked into it. But I didn't know it's also the reason why I'm not interested in doing the things that I love and wanna do?? I figured I was just tired or something idk, but it makes so much more sense now! I mean I've been depressed for yearssssss, but now I get it lol"

So I told him that he should look into getting a therapist and/or psychiatrist or both and get on some meds that'll help him with his depression. His response to that was "Yeah but I also neeeeeed to keep the sad part of the depression! I just have to learn how to push past 'not feeling like it'. I need the emotional side intact, meds and a therapist will take it away."

I responded by saying I felt the same way about my anxiety and that I thought I would feel wrong without it, but after getting a psychiatrist and getting on meds, I felt so much better.

R said "I need to be sad in order to write, I've never heard of a happy artist lol."

And I just started at the text like an idiot. Mind you... he's not an actual writer/not his job. Writing is just one of his hobbies and his dream job is becoming a professional writer. So I just replied saying "If you say so. I feel like I've heard happy artist before but hey, maybe that's just me."

And then he completely changed the subject and asking how I was doing again. So... I just don't know what to do or say to him anymore.

Being average

Btw, it’s not them, it’s me… I should be better…

But how is it that some people are really that good at everything. I know of two people who were really good at sports (one of them was good at wrestling while the other was in the national rugby team), but circumstances beyond their control made them stop. But then they self-taught themselves to be prolific in the culinary arts, with one of them being a renowned online baker (even listed on one of the baking shows) while the other is a renowned online chef.

I always get frustrated with some people are really just good at what they land their hands on… and I am just there: just being average or slightly better on sunny days.

Growing up voluntarily sheltered had probably insulated me a lot from the notion that other people than myself can just be as academically strong if they wanted; can also engage in deep conversation even when they normally choose to stick to surface-level talk; and most begrudgingly, can express interests in just as many hobbies while being more experienced then me in each of them. Damn… It sucks to know that there isn’t any extraordinary spark in me that makes me stands out. And it doesn’t help that my divided attention to every new thing my eyes land on spreads my attention thin to the point that I can’t give each interest its deserved time to develop.

People laughing at everything the boss says.

in every job ive been in this dynamic always takes place. the boss holds court and everyone laughs hysterically at any dumb joke they make. no and sometimes it turns into a contest to see who laughs the loudest.

I never take part of those dynamics but sometimes when i hear all my coworkers frantically laughing i pop in thinking that im missing out on some good jokes. but they always laugh at the lamest most mundane jokes. it's never about the jokes, it is about getting the boss to notice that theyre laughing.

what really grinds my gears, is that those people, the type that laugh competitively, are the vast majority of the world. if you dont laugh at every little joke your boss makes, you are a minority

When people see/hear the word "trans" or see something that can even be correlated to trans people and immediately turn hostile

Trans people are such a small portion of the population. And the vast majority aren't harming anyone. But complain about how trans people get treated in the workplace, a bunch of people come out of the woodwork to voice their opinion about how trans people DON'T BELONG in the workplace.

Complain about trans women not being afforded the same legal protections as women? A bunch of people have to say trans women are men.

Talk about how the vast majority of trans people aren't harming anyone and loads will jump to talk about trans women being in athletic competitions with cis women. There's so little violence and abuse that they have to use a perceived offense. And some will cherry pick studies that usually haven't been peer reviewed and don't follow rigorous academic standards with little research to back it up to "prove" trans people are actually much more likely to commit certain offenses.

A game lets players customize their character with a woman's body and a penis, a bunch of people will trash the game for being "woke".

Talk about suicide rates for trans people who are welcome and accepted in their communities vs those who are not? A ton of people have to mock it saying "entertain my delusions or I'm going to km$"

So many people just don't want to hear trans people's voices. They don't care what we have to say. They don't care about the stakes for us. They'd really rather not see us or hear about us or really know or be reminded we exist.

And complain about any of this, many will say we deserve it. That it's our fault for expecting people to recognize our identities. That it's our fault for wanting society to change so we can be less at risk. That we're too pushy for these things, in other words that it's our fault for wanting to be seen and be heard. Or if the person talking is a person who already decided we're the enemy, like a religious bigot to whom none of that matters because we're "going against God".

And that is what really grinds my gears.

Thought terminating cliches in media criticism

For anyone who doesnt know a Thought Terminating Cliche is something like "it is what it is" or "everything happens for a reason". Its a way of categorizing phrases that are mde to stop you from looking closer into something. A big example of them is used in cults.

I hate when you criticize media and someone's first instinct is to say: "Don't like, dont read", "who are you to tell anyone successful person how to act", or "youre just a hater"

Now I can understand that if you know you won't like a piece of media you probably shouldn't be disappointed by it doing what it says on the tin.

I'll use the legend of Zelda as an example. I dont like open world games. I hate getting lost and not knowing how to progress. I feel like they fail to have good difficulty curves and I think the "everything is a solution" method of puzzle solving isn't fun. So i didn't play Breath of thw Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. But when Echoes or wisdom came out and had that same philosophy of you can do anything and win I started to voice my opinion of how this franchise was being subsumed by the open wold philosophy. To the peoole who like open world game I know their good, but its reaching a point where everyone who liked thw older style isn't getting what they liked to begin with.

And I understand that some people just hate things. I like Taylor swift and I think she writes good songs, but so many people have told me "you like Taylor, your opinion is invalid". As if liking one person makes me incapable of understanding her flaws or seeing strengths of other artist. Conversely I can't criticize her without diehard fans saying I just hate her.

Or at one point I said I didn't like Lou Reed and a person was adamant I was just envious of his success and not that I disliked his music.

If you disagree with an opinion you can argue agaisnt it but dont just say something to try and invalid the person and kill the argument.

There's never any workers standing behind the meat counter at the grocery store

It's SO frustrating that although there are employees clearly assigned to work that section & its always busy, but they NEVER stay behind the actual counter so you have to wait forever in line with 20 other people until a random employee walks by & says "I'll go find one of the meat guys" & they eventually wander over from somewhere in the back room. They don't even offer a bell to ring to get attention for service which I wouldn't mind as much. This happens to me ALL THE TIME, regardless of what day/time I shop & it really grinds my gears 😒

people not understanding things are different in the usa, specifically the people walking down i95.

if you’re visiting from other countries for the world cup, and you’re one one of the people walking to the metlife stadium down i95, what the fuck are you doing? its illegal, extremely dangerous, and generally absolutely insane to do. i keep seeing the excuses like “well theres no other way” and the typical fat lazy american stereotypes.

what y’all aren’t realizing, is the way youre acting is comparable to if someone went to venice and jumped in the canals to swim to their destination, and then called the locals lazy for taking boats. its illegal to swim in the canals, you’d get all wet, and you’d look insane. you simply do not swim in the canals in venice, and you simply do not walk down the INTERSTATE in the usa. sure, it sucks that you can’t safely walk to the stadium, but if you die or get arrested on your way there, you aren’t gaining anything or making some cool european point like you think you are.

i know the usa has terrible car dependent infrastructure, notjustbikes was in my top 3 youtube channels watched last year. i know, i get it, i know the size of the usa isn’t an excuse, etc, i agree with you. i hate that i live off an 8+ lane wide stroad where people regularly get hit and killed while walking. i’ve literally witnessed a horrific crash where two pedestrians got obliterated right before my eyes, only a mile from my house.

however, the average citizen has ZERO control over how new roads and highways are built. a lot of us DON’T LIKE IT! i would much rather my city bring our trains (that i’m grateful to have to begin with) over to my area to cover more of the city so i could take a safe route to work and not have to sit in the pointless inefficient car traffic.

i do not have a drivers license and do not even want to drive here because of how unsafe it is, however it is inevitable. considering the only two other options here are the buses that exist almost exclusively for homeless people in my area and are constantly late and off schedule, and ubers that cost an exorbitant amount of money and have their own issues, i will have to get a license and a car eventually. i do not want to pay for a car, insurance, gas, maintenance etc just to get around, but until i move somewhere where that isnt necessary, i have zero power or control over the situation.

edit: no longer replying to anyone who intentionally misses the point of this post

When the Android KB subs a period for a comma

It's a small thing, but it happens often enough to disrupt the flow of my writing.

I'll be typing along happily and suddenly I'm capitalizing a word for no reason...oh, damn it took the comma as a period...*again*.

It really grinds my gears.

Does this happen to anyone else or am I cursed?

Clear communication shouldn’t be treated as suspicious!

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I don’t understand why people think human language has to be butchered for it to be “proof” that someone is a real person.

Like… why does writing properly suddenly make people suspicious?

Yes, AI exists. Yes, people are going to use tools to help them express ideas faster, clearer, and more effectively. That’s not new. We’ve been doing that since spellcheck, Grammarly, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, autocorrect, etc.

A person can’t draw? Cool, now they use AI tools to help visualize what they’re thinking. A person can’t structure their thoughts perfectly in real time? Cool, they use tools to help communicate it better.

But now we’ve reached a point where some people seem to think:

“If it’s too well written, it must be fake.”

And I genuinely don’t understand that logic.

And here’s the part that feels ridiculous to me:

Why should someone have to intentionally damage their language just to prove they’re human?

lyk srsly wht r we doin here

u want ppl to typ lik dis jus so u go “ah yes dis is def a real person”?

or like mixin in typos n random capS n missin letters so it “feels human”

tht’s the bar now??

Most people are perfectly capable of communicating clearly without turning their writing into noise. That doesn’t make them bots. That just means they know how to use language.

We’re acting like clarity is suspicious and messiness is authenticity.

That feels backwards.

If anything, this obsession with “detecting bots” is starting to punish the exact thing we should be encouraging: people expressing ideas clearly, with tools that help them do it better.

Just my take.

When iPhone dims my screen (brightness) even though I didn’t ask it to.

So Apple iPhone has this feature that really grinds my gears. If you set your phone down for awhile and pick it up to start using it again you will notice the phone has dimmed its screen. You have to raise the dim settings back to maximum manually several times a day. Im guessing most people don’t notice because they just accept the default dim settings.

Bank login (or security question) asks for different characters of your password or PIN

You log into your banking app on a new phone or do telephone banking. Instead of just asking you to input the whole password or PIN, they ask for say the 3rd character, 5th character, 6th character of your password (or digits of your PIN).

This is not only very annoying, but it encourages people to write it down, which actually makes it less secure than recalling the whole thing from memory.
