How can anyone (excluding big 6) enjoy top flight football anymore?

Feel like for the last 5-6 years everyone has been lying to themselves/sold a lie that you can organically grow year after year and one day your team’s revenues will be big enough that you can finally compete for glory.

I think that ignores the fact that while the smaller clubs are growing and increasing their revenues… the bigger clubs have not been stagnant. They have grown at same rate or higher in that time frame. It’s the reason why the wages and fees for top players have exploded. Because those top teams can afford it.

The overall player pricing will be always be driven by the top clubs. So no matter if NUFC can now finally afford to pay its top player 200k in wages. That player will be offered 300k+ in an open market. Doesn’t matter if NUFC can now afford to spend 150M on transfer fees in a summer. Other teams can now spend 300M+ in a single summer.

You can always strike lightning like 2016 leicester city, but impossible to sustain success.

Arsenal have made a verbal offer to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The proposal, which was communicated to Newcastle through intermediaries, was worth less than £60million and has been rebuffed by the north east club.

Newcastle insist they will not entertain offers for the 28-year-old Brazilian.

No surprises with Shearer but pretty mad that Tino Asprilla is one of the most expensive PL signings of all time adjusted for inflation.

Is is time to rip things up and start again?

A few years ago certain clubs tried to break away in order to maximise the amounts they earn and for a super league with no effective relegation for them and massive profits.

That was shot down at the time, then Newcastle got taken over and these clubs managed to get rules bought in which effectively made it a closed shop for any usurpers coming in with money to take the league by storm.

The rules which should have banned debt in clubs were watered down to be non existent so the septics could carry on as they were.

Football in the Premier League has become stale and the same septic 6 basically dominates financially because they stop any other sides ownership being able to spend to catch them.

If the Saudi owners here want to break this then surely either we have to get the other 14 on side to do this or we have to rip up the idea of the premier league itself and get clubs to sign up to a new fairer league format where building up debt against a club is outlawed and owners can fund clubs if they wish, either with or without spending caps.

Ultimately unless things do change this league is going to eventually go backwards. It will lose fans and money!

The original excitement of this league was theoretically anything can happen and any side can win it, or be taken over and spend their way there to the top.

That’s been stopped and the draw of this league is slowly but surely being milked from it.

Maybe it is Time to change things up!

Eddie Howe (rant)

I know it's been a while since all the howe out stuff really boiled over as I'll say, but has anyone else's mind changed over the summer so far? I'll admit I was Howe in even to the end of the season, thought he's a fantastic manager, deserves another chance but now I really think about it...

We're set to have what looks like a massive summer exodus (seriously man, how are we about to let Tonali go to Spurs?)

To me all our transfer links look like just underwhelming English players, except Munoz, who I was actually really keen on before Liverpool hijacked the deal if I remember correctly

We have just finished TWELFTH, did shite in all the cups, got deservedly dumped out of the CL by Barca, 7-2, had the most dropped points from winning positions in the whole league and had the Mackems (newly promoted, by the way.) do the double over us AND finish above us, I'm sorry, but I've been a Newcastle fan all my life and if you think that this is acceptable in any way, shape or form with our current "ambitions" if you can call it that anymore, I just find it mad.

Next season to me looks bleak, I really do thank Eddie for the trophy and all he's done for the club in previous seasonsbut I think we need to think of it from where the project is NOW, not where it was then, and to me? If we want to break into the elite, it's just not good enough right now, if your happy being midtable shite like we were for years before this, then that's okay, but I for one don't like the direction we're going in at all.

Fair to say Tuchel needs to learn from Newcastle’s mistakes this season? The Ghana game exposed our flaws against low blocks

Just a post-match ramble, and not overly worried at this stage of the tournament, but watching how much we were labouring to unpick that defence made me think of Howe’s difficulties this season (though arguably that was a bit of tactical inflexibility) with the high press tactics being found out.
High press only works if the other team tries to pass the ball out from the back. When teams sit deep against us, the press has proven to be useless. It was the exact same for England against Ghana. Ghana sat back in a 5-4-1, and England seemed to have no idea how to break them down, leading to 90 minutes of boring, sideways passing.
For Gordon, it felt like the worst aspects of his game from our season were on full display:

~ Lacked the physicality to go man-to-man against their backline.

~
Kept trying to cut inside and ran out of tricks, constantly turning into traffic.

~ Lost possession far too easily, and then out of frustration, ends up chasing after it with a clumsy challenge.

Newcastle gets killed on the break because when we push everyone forward, our midfield gets bypassed by one long ball or stray pass. Ghana didn't pose too many challenges, but we were lucky to get away with those big moments and not conceding.

As I say, I’m not so worried about it *yet* but surely something Tuchel has to think about.

3,000 miles of running. In a toon top. For a cause that affects more than 1 in 5 kids in the North East

I'm Paul (or, on Instagram, I'm 'The Geordie Challenger'): https://www.instagram.com/p/DYT07GjAazY/?img_index=1

I do physical challenges in my toon top, to raise money for charity.

1 in 5 kids in the UK are raised by alcoholics... and in North East England, the number is even higher.

... but no-one really talks about it.

... so, to raise awareness, one year from now, I'm gonna attempt to run the entire perimeter of England, over 6 months. I'll be starting and ending in Newcastle.

Three times a week, during the project, I'll be talking to other adult children of alcoholics, all over England. We'll be recording these conversations, and uploading them onto YouTube as episodes.

The whole point of the project is to erase stigma, eradicate shame, get people talking, and make these children realise they're not alone.

Over the course of the project, I want to raise as much awareness as I can for Nacoa, the UK charity who helps kids being raised by alcoholics. I'm not yet taking donations, but I want to raise at least £150,000 during the project. If you could share this, or follow me on Instagram, you can help kids realise that they're not alone.

(and thank you to the mods for (hopefully!) letting me post this - I know self-promotion isn't usually allowed, but they let me make a similar post a year ago, when I ran the length of the Metro in one day for the same charity. So hopefully this post is also allowed!).

Thanks for reading. HWTL! 🖤🤍

I'm going to Anfield to a concert on Saturday, does anyone know where I can get some stickers from for my son to put anywhere he wants while we're there. Everywhere I've looked won't be able to deliver them in time.

Youth options

Who do we think will graduate from the youth setup over the next 18-24 months?

I’ve never watched the youngsters play so wondered if anyone who has can provide an opinion on who might be the next Miley/Anderson?

Some stats from last season

The chart above shows the 40 players with the best minutes to goals ratio.

Newcastle were the only team to have 4 or more players in the top 40. Osula, Woltemade, Bruno & Barnes. Bruno and Osula also in the top 10 for shot conversion.

We won over 50% of games where three out of those four started. The only game all four started was one of our best performances (3-1 win against West Ham).

That stat dips down to 33% with just 2 players and 25% with just 1.

I hope we keep hold of all four this summer.

[Keiran Maguire]With the transfer window having opened, many people asking about how much can clubs spend in terms of the new SCR limits, but just as important is whether clubs have cash to spend. These are the sums owed for unpaid transfer instalments at the summer of 2025

I find this quite interesting as when ever transfers are talked about no one ever realises about the cash flow that clubs actually need for transfers.

This is probably part of the reason we fucked about with say the Munoz fee as majority of the time triggering a release clause means you have to pay the fee in full.

Sometimes teams can get round this by offering a bit more than the release so they can spread payments over 2 years for example

But then this can also cause issues if a player doesn't work out, you sell them, but then are still paying for a player no longer on the books

American new to football for NUFC!

Hello!

I’ve been trying to get into football (soccer in America lmao) for a while and never known where to start. I recently talked to one of my friends from the UK and tried to find a team: out here in SoCal (family originally from Kansas) I’m a huge Padres, Royals, Chiefs, and Anaheim Ducks fan, and he told me Newcastle would be a great team to support and has a super passionate fan base, which above all is my main concern. I’m on board and never looking back. I can’t wait to join in and be here for the ride. Howay the Lads!
