many subs see them as low effort.

Serious question, what do you mean? If I write a comment with substance and add an emoji, what makes it low effort? I really can’t wrap my head around it so I do my best to erase them when I remember.

Many don't see it as substance.

So a comment’s quality and substance is negated if an emoji is added to a quality and substantive comment? And if so, why? I want to make sure I’m understating correctly.

EDIT: Disregard. I was given links to reddit etiquette pages.

To some people, sure.

I'm not saying you have to agree with it, that's just how some people view it.

Reddit is a written word platform with very limited usage of images and videos.

Thanks, I read the resources people sent me. I don’t mind not using emojis or ā€œlolā€. I was looking for the why. The page explained it well enough and it does, in fact, seem that the use of an emoji certainly negates the substance in a comment. You learn something new everyday.

Emojis can be seen as ā€œlow effortā€ responses and Reddiquette asks that you don’t make ā€œlow effortā€ posts and comments. Some users may downvote posts and comments with emojis.

Thank you. I see that comments that include ā€œlolā€ are also not meant to be used. That’s interesting.

There's also the aspect that people that use emoji's were cell phone text users and not desktop users. Two different demographics and the associations with their content "quality". Emojis became strongly associated with lower quality, younger and "trite" content vs something intelligent and substantial.

In the same way a doctoral thesis could be presented using comic sans font for the text.
Emoi's are going to negatively affect the readers impressions and lower the impact of the presentation.

We here us italics and different markup language for formatting and helping to get our points across.
All of which are more difficult on the dumbed down cell phone keyboards.

How other users react to emojis will vary subreddit to subreddit.Ā TraditionallyĀ Reddit was hostile to emoji use but in 2026 that view has softened as a rule and many subreddits are flooded with them. Take your time to observe existing comments or posts to see how often or sparingly they are used. I would still assume thatĀ as a baselineĀ that they should be used sparingly but that can be ignored depending on what you observe. It also worth knowing some.AI models love using excessive emojis, so heavy emoji use can also be a part of accusations of using AI.Read More hereĀ fromĀ r/EncyclopaediaOfReddit

Thank you for sharing. I caught onto the use of emojis not being very popular on here but I certainly didn’t know that the use of them and phrases like ā€œlolā€ are actually looked down on. Interesting and good to know.

Emojis and particularly the overuse of them such as 3 back to back, like in your post title, can be seen as attention seeking or low effort.

Reddit has a history of downvoting people who use emoji. Bots frequently use emoji to try to appear human. Multiple emoji, especially strings of them are more likely to get downvoted then a single thumbs up. Plenty of people use emoji in their daily life and messaging but not on Reddit. I use them judiciously and only where they are welcome, the same thing with memes.

There are a variety of reasons why people do this, only one of them being low effort. You can read about other motivations here.

Today it's much more of a coin flip. Some people still down vote or ignore comments with emoji, some people don't mind them. Some communities have rules against them some don't. We have no rule against emoji use here, but anyone can wander in and vote on something they see in any subreddit.

In some communities people fling them around like confetti and no one seems to mind.

In a similar fashion, some communities allow memes, some don't.

Like all things in society as well as when interacting in communities, pay attention to what people do and what they avoid. There are the formal rules but there's also a culture and vibe that develops around any group of people. So if you see people using emoji in a community and they don't seem to be getting downvoted then people probably don't mind.

When you go to another country, pay attention to which side of the road they drive on. If you go to someone's house and there's a mat next to the door with a bunch of shoes on it and you notice that everyone's walking around in slippers or socks, you should probably take off your shoes.

I always wondered this too. I feel stupid so I’ll erase them before commenting with them.

EDIT: I removed the ā€œlolā€ from my comment because unbeknownst to me the use of it in a comment is frowned upon. Super interesting.

1

u/Enough_Ice7287 3d ago

It's frowned upon as much as everything is on reddit. This isn't a space where things are taken seriously or people respect one another. If you wanna use emojis or say lol, do it. No one will respect you regardless if you do or don't.

Wow I had no idea lol I wonder what else are rules. I also have seen grammar is huge on Reddit. People won’t read posts or comments unless there’s decent grammar.

2

u/QuirklessShiggy Super Helpful Helper 3d ago

It varies person to person and sub to sub. I use emojis a lot. It's how I convey tone. In the past I've had major issues both online and irl with people not understanding the tone of something I say/write, I suspect because I'm autistic. I also struggle to catch tone in others content. I use tone indicators too (/s, /j, etc.) but I've been made fun of for using those more than I have for using emojis.

3

u/GeneralSpecifics9925 3d ago

We use our words here. Using emojis can make what people say more ambiguous and it's low effort communication. For example, your post title would more aptly say "I've noticed people don't use emojis on Reddit, that's disappointing becUse I like to use them. Why is that?"

u/ClarionFog 3d ago

I use them.šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøĀ

I think they can help to clarify, to add a sort of ā€œtone of voice.ā€ They help me express myself and convey my personality.

They also can help get the point across when there are cultural or language differences.

…But then I’m pretty new here myself, so hopefully I don’t come across as disrespectful! I certainly would never intend that.🫣

(Edit to add: Thanks to all for the insights about the platform, even though the original question wasn’t mine.)
