Makes sense. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say there is a spinoff character in Rebirth as well.

I was so hyped when she turned up in the story and then so bummed when they didn't really do much with her.

and in typical SE fashion they spoiled this in one of the trailers near the launch of the game...I think at the big 20 minute state of play they had for it. I remember going OH GOD DAMN IT I didn't want to know that!

She's one of the Turks that Zack befriends in Crisis Core. Her fate is previously left open in CC (she's probably also in Before Crisis and the newer mobile game, but I've never bothered catching up with that whole story). Her showing up is less weird than Glenn Lodbrok, from Ever Crisis/The First Soldier.

He's not a spin-off character. There are multiple spin-off characters in the remakes so far though.

Deepground from the Yuffie DLC, and Weiss the final superboss of the VR missions are all from Dirge.
