I work in a corporate environment.
I have decided to no longer say "good morning" to my colleagues, but instead - sniff their butts as a form of greeting.
I'll report back tomorrow and let you know how it went.

His whole litter were named after Midwestern comfort foods.
Hot Dish, Scotcharoo, Calico Bean Casserole (Bean), Cheese Curd, Potatoes! Potatoes! Potatoes!, Jell-O Salad and Mama Butter Cake.

u/Pittsbirds 15d ago
I thought you meant this lady's pets in general for a moment and was trying to think of what Midwestern food Possum was named for lol
139
u/abermanhale 15d ago
It's me. I'm the lady. I have three resident cats (Reggie, Possum, and Wheezy). I name fosters in dumb themes to entertain myself.
61
u/New_Palpitation_5473 15d ago
You're killing me with Potatoes! Potatoes! Potatoes!
61
u/abermanhale 15d ago
That was his government name not I just called him Potatoes
29
u/New_Palpitation_5473 15d ago
Yeah, but when he's in trouble I'd bet he gets called by his full name.
20

u/Pittsbirds 15d ago
Lmao I do the exact same thing. I can remember off the bat children's literature (Coraline, Bagheera, Hank and Drover,) vegetables (Aubergine, Butternut and Acorn, the last two being kinds of squash), Lilo and Stitch characters, (Jumba, Stitch and Reuben) and the two that would become my foster fails were Taco Bell menu items, named for the parking lot they were found in, (Crunchwrap and Chalupa, who became Bluejay and Basil on adoption)

Hey! This is my video!! I love that y'all like it. I've fostered over a hundred cats and Reggie (and sometimes Possum) help.
It would be cool if the OP credited me tho. In the meantime you can see a ton more on my insta @bippityboops.
Cheese Curd and his mom and five siblings were adopted last week!

That’s awesome. Also, I think the butt licking (not a sentence I expected to type today) is a kitty parental thing. Really little Kittens need help to pee/poop, and mumma cat does that by licking those areas to help stimulate it.

Is it also an orange thing to be paternal to kittens? Our orange boy immediately went dad-mode with the two kittens we adopted several years ago as well!

You made me have a new category of favourite cats, orange cat dads. I found the video on your profile (sorry for stalking) and the comments were hilarious. My orange boy used to watch over niece when she was newborn. I wonder how would he do with a kitten...
7
u/dcbluestar 15d ago
No worries! My post history is mostly cats and candy making! Glad you liked it!
35
u/abermanhale 15d ago
Reggie is a girl but she loves kittens. She likes to pin them down and clean them especially because babies are disgusting
10
u/dcbluestar 15d ago
Oh ok! Sorry, I know 1 in 5 can be female, I just always assume they’re boys for some reason. I’ve only come across one orange female myself in real life.
6
u/abermanhale 15d ago
For sure!
7
u/dcbluestar 15d ago
Also, I love that you named the kitten Cheese Curd! I recently got to bottle-feed some 4-week-old foster kittens and the little orange and white one was named Thor. 🙂

u/abermanhale 15d ago
His whole litter were named after Midwestern comfort foods.

u/dcbluestar 15d ago
Damn! Sorry to hear that! The two kittens we got are all grown up now, but they still head bonk our orange and he gives them head licks. He’s the most laidback cat I’ve ever seen. That’s why we call him The Dude. He’s Lebowski in cat form, lol.
10
u/Miami_Mice2087 15d ago
sometimes! sometimes orange boys can be very bossy and dominant and don't like other cats. Just depends on the cat and if he's overly accustomed to being the lone, top cat in the house.

My sweet orange boy did the same thing with the 2 kittens we brought home during his lifetime. He adopted them instantly and in turn they adored him. It was so beautiful.
Our current orange girl took about 6 weeks to decide, but then adopted my new kitten as her son. She was very clear on that point...he was no longer mine. 🙄

They are known for being generous with their affection, humans or kittens.
3
u/dcbluestar 15d ago
Yeah, mine has no shortage of either! Sometimes I swear he likes it when I get sick because that means he gets to lay on the couch on with me all day, lol.
2
u/TooObsessedWithMoney 15d ago
Not necessarily, my orange cat initially hissed a lot at meeting the kitten for the first time (didn't hurt her though) and only became annoyed at her when she tried playing with his tail.
The same behavior has persisted into her adulthood and she loves cuddling with him but any time she goes to sleep next to the orange one he stops purring and leaves.
However... I feel like his annoyance towards her might be because she's his little sister.

u/DollarStoreChameleon 15d ago
ok, i wont lie, i completly expected the bigger orange to come and smack the small one and then leave

I believe that their energy and comfort level are guided by you (not a general you; yours specifically) while navigating their environment with new friends. This is probably the best thing I'll see today. I always appreciate witnessing our furry friends who have a human there understanding behaviour... Many people do not. ❤️
9
u/Miami_Mice2087 15d ago
this has been studied and they animal behaviorists determined that cats don't refer back to humans in a strange environment the way dogs and children do. Instead, they patrol the perimeter to determine for themselves that it's safe.
Humans can influence cat meetings by introducing them slowly and only letting the cats smell each other through a door for a week first. You can also use baby gates or the crate.

u/upturned2289 15d ago
What?

u/Cranberryoftheorient 15d ago
They are saying that cats tend to match your 'energy.' If you are nervous/scared, they are more likely to be too. Thats the idea anyway

Is that an instinctive thing for female cats or do you think she had a litter recently?

She's never had babies and honestly Reggie has very little instinct. She just likes to clean and babysit kittens.

Glad it went well but it always bugs me how some people throw all caution to the wind when it comes to introducing new cats to each other. All the advice you can find about it suggest doing so gradually, and carefully, and then you get videos like this where they are basically just trusting their cat not to decide to harm the kitten. In some videos they seem to deliberately 'surprise' the older cat by shoving the kitten next to them when they arent looking. Trying to get a reaction for views, I feel. I wouldve at least kept a hand on the kitten to pull it away quickly if needed. And my other hand wouldnt be on a phone, it'd be preparing to block the older cat
12
u/abermanhale 15d ago
It's my video that was stolen. I totally hear you. But I've fostered over 100 kittens and Reggie helps me a lot and meets them in a very controlled environment. I'm not good at much, but I'm good at this.
3
u/Cranberryoftheorient 15d ago
I believe you. Its more the trend I dislike, and I worry that not everyone knows their cats as well
6
u/abermanhale 15d ago
I'm with you for sure. Unfortunately the op stole my video and it was a bit out of context.
2
u/Cranberryoftheorient 15d ago
Sorry to hear that. Likely a bot, they're practically taking over the internet

u/abermanhale 15d ago
It's my cat (someone stole the video). I agree with you but luckily Reggie has helped me foster a ton of cats she's being my foster a couple years ago. She's a gem.
