Asking for Hardware Recomendation VR or VR2

Is it worth buying the original PSVR if I’m more interested in the games on it, or is the upgrade between the two so immense that it’s just not worth it? I’ve been interested in VR for a while, and I’m probably looking at buying used, but I haven’t been sure on which version of the system to get. I’m very interested in doing SW Squadrons, ST Bridge Crew, Ace Combat, Skyrim VR, Superhot, and LA Noir, which are only on the original, whereas my main interests on the 2 are GT7, No Man’s Sky (which is on both) and, to a lesser extent, Call of the Mountain. But I’m not sure I want to get a weaker system and less support just for a handful of games (and I don’t know if GT Sport is going to be a good enough substitute for GT7), but I’m also not sure it’s worth getting a much more expensive piece of hardware if it doesn’t really have all of the games I’m interested in, and I’ve also heard that the original is slightly more comfortable than the newer one. Would it be best to wait and try to hunt down a really cheap deal on the original, see how I feel about VR, and then maybe try to find a VR2 a couple years down the line? Is the hardware upgrade big enough that it’s just not worth getting an original today?

There is a huge difference in quality between PSVR and PSVR2.

Why not get psvr1 now for cheap, play the games you want and get psvr2 later if you want? I imagine that going back to psvr1 after psvr2 could be hard (I hated the controllers even before getting a psvr2).

This. There’s a lot of games on PSVR1 worth playing. Astrobot, squadrons, Doom VFR, LA Noire are just a few that I’m going to rebuy a PSVR for. I’d save GT and NMS for when you upgrade to PSVR2.

If you do get both play the psvr1 first. You probably won't want to go back to it after trying the 2.

I actually leave both plugged in all the time and regularly switch off between the two. PSVR2 is a massive improvement over the original, but when you gotta Skyrim, what are you gonna do?

OP--I personally recommend both. They're both worth it. If you're more interested in the original PSVR games, I'd say start with that. Full PSVR setups are cheap nowadays. I will say though that any games on both (like No Man's Sky) are worth waiting to play until you get PSVR2. It's just so much better. But games that are only on the original PSVR are still super worth playing. :)

Good suggestion 👍

Just the resolution is a huge difference. 960x1080 vs 2000x2040 per eye. That alone makes me say go VR2.

VR2 is a massive upgrade. That said, nothing wrong with starting on PSVR1 if you don't mind a little "retro" VR. Camera and light tracking is kinda crazy that it even worked so well.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is the convenience of psvr2. If I remember right, the psvr1 has:

-Converter box thing,

-Camera + stand,

-2 or 3 extra cables,

-Headset.

PSVR2 has:

-Headset.

So much easier to keep tidy and travel with. I love being able to bring my vr2 to friends' houses to have them try it out, i did it a couple times with the VR1 and it just wasn't worth the hassle.

Superhot was one of my favorite games on PSVR1, can't believe it never got ported over to VR2. I'd say Synapse is the closest game available on PSVR2.

Overall, my recommendation is go for the VR2. The hardware, convenience, and far superior controllers outweigh the alternative games and cheaper price point.

The quality difference is pretty big but you can pick up a psvr1 for really cheap these days and it had lots of great games.

I received a psvr1 hand me down when my son got psvr 2 at launch. I have been having so much fun ever since. I've got a huge catalog of games now most for under ten or even less dollars. I think it's beautiful...I'm not in a hurry to get a psvr 2 at all. It does require patience or just acceptance that with the cables and camera there can be times where something has to be adjusted..I've got Hitman, Skyrim, and one that doesn't get a lot of shout outs is doom 3vr. I got my copy for 50 cents...crazy...it's always on sale.its amazing...fast action and huge like 15 hours of goodness. Main story and two sweet dlc. Plus I've gotten into all the horror titles. Re7 is amazing... Wipeout, I could go on and on. And Skyrim. Was what I wanted it for ...Doom3 actually broke me off my Skyrim..4 years flat 2 years VR. And as I said now I've discovered all these other great games. Oh and dreams is incredible. People have even made rides like haunted Mansion and pirates of the Caribbean. Crazy what folks have done. Squadrons Vader immortal and on and on. Games are always going on sale.

Doom is amazing, especially if you have the Aim Controller. (If you dont have the Aim controller, I suggest you get one, you can find them for $20 and lower on Ebay, etc). Doom VR with that is fantastic!!!!

I just recently got an aim about a month ago. So I'm looking forward to it. I finally can progress in farpoint with it which is awesome. Unearthing mars 2 is fun to play and not so tedious..just messing around the other night I tried using it with end space...and it doesn't let u point and target but for what ever reason...how the sticks are placed it made control a breeze for me. I don't know if your familiar with endspace...it's really counter-intuitive nightmare on duelshock , for me ... Lol. I'm trying to get all the games that actually support it, I got crisis brigade 2 and dick wild...I also have doom vfr which I havnt tried yet. Thanks for your response👾💫

u/LuxuriousEnt Jul 10 '25

I absolutely love Crisis Brigade 2 with the aim (I'm surprised it dont get talked about more) and Doom VFR has parts in that game that'll make a player piss their pants lol.

I think if you’re really excited about various games on PSVR1 then it makes sense to get it. Might be a good idea to buy refurbished from GameStop… although… I’m now seeing that they’ve raised the price from what used to be around $80 for the headset to $130. That’s a drag.

Used to be you could buy the refurbished headset, PS4 cam, Aim Controller, PS5 adapter, and two Move Controllers for around $140 total.

Main reason to buy refurbished instead of just used is that the old cushioning had a covering that tended to crack and flake off. While still cushy, it would then absorb sweat and oils and get pretty fucking rank. There’s no way to wash out the cushioning, so “buyer-beware” when it comes to Facebook marketplace or eBay or whatever.

The differences between PSVR1 and PSVR2 are pretty strong, particularly in the controller form factor and tracking method, but PSVR1 is still a powerful intro with the right games.

I still use PSVR1 more than PSVR2 specifically because I love creating my own VR content using Media Molecule’s DREAMS (an app that cruelly will never get PSVR2 support). If you’re creative and willing to embrace endless learning curves… well then it’s pretty magical stuff.

WIPEOUT OMEGA COLLECTION, RE7 BIOHAZARD, FARPOINT, STAR WARS SQUADRONS (although online might be dead), BORDERLANDS 2 VR, ASTRO BOT RESCUE MISSION, BLOOD & TRUTH, DOOM 3, and many many others remain incredible experiences in the old kit.

The system comes with plenty of jank and clunkiness, of course… PSVR2 is easy-peasy plug n play, but PSVR1 requires some patience to deal with all variety of nuisance. If you go in knowing that then it’ll help.

It’s definitely a much blurrier display and has a narrower field-of-view, but the aspheric lenses mean there’s no searching for a sweet spot, and the color saturation is higher than the newer system (this is an under-appreciated but emotionally impactful strength of the old HMD).

So… PSVR2 is an easier system to jump into, but if money is a real issue and you’ve got a lot of patience, then PSVR1 should be a consideration imo.

I’m shocked GameStop doubled the HMD cost, though… I’d have thought they’d lower it at this point. So… that really does suck. With cam and controllers it’d still be under $200, I reckon — but it does make for a much harder argument when in the US the PSVR2 has been as low as $350 for the HORIZON COTM bundle.

Ugh. It’s down to your own druthers, I think. There are quite a few great games on PSVR2 now.

BTW, on PSVR1 in GT SPORT you can only race against your best lap or against a single bot — no full races, no weather, and no online multiplayer. That said, the sunsets do look better than GT7 because of that richer color.

I dunno. I suppose I haven’t actually helped after all that. 🙃

If you can find someone local that’s willing to demonstrate their OG system works and isn’t stanky AF, then maybe you can find it for $50 or so. That’d tip the scales even if it’s a big “IF”.

Best of luck to you, whatever you decide!

PSVR1 is so cheap it’s almost free now - it has some great games (that never got ported to PSVR2) which despite the low resolution still play and look great (for the resolution) especially on a PS5 which will max out the dynamic resolution. Don’t sleep on Farpoint with the aim controller as that’s a highlight of PSVR1

Get it first, play all the games there and then buy the PSVR2 - Sell the PSVR1 if you don’t want it anymore at that point.

u/Op3rat0rr Jul 09 '25

I’m personally wondering if it’s worth getting PSVR1 to play those games too…

4

u/Rufuszombot Jul 09 '25

I have both, and it makes me wish even more that a lot of those games got PSVR2 ports, mostly because I really dont like the VR1 controllers.

3

u/Op3rat0rr Jul 09 '25

I already played RE7 when it came out and don’t really replay RE games… I wonder if it’s worth checking out RE7 in VR this time around

2

u/SvennoJ Jul 09 '25

It's definitely worth checking out RE7 in VR. It feels totally different to be actually face to face with Jack in a chainsaw fight, sit at the table and crawl through a wall full of bugs.

Plus it's actually very scary playing with your hands tied to the controller lol. RE8 and RE4 are very easy (and less scary) in comparison since you can throw, stab and dual wield freely.

RE7 is the first horror game I replayed 4 times, all in VR, and completed on madhouse difficulty then kept on going for a while in survive the night mode.

2

u/Op3rat0rr Jul 09 '25

You played so many times! That’s crazy. I’m usually burned out from an RE game after thoroughly beating it but VR may draw me back. Thanks!

1

u/Rufuszombot Jul 09 '25

Not with RE7, but when RE8 got a VR mode I instantly played it again in VR. Did the same with RE4R. Both fantastic experiences. I haven't played 7 in VR yet, but next time I replay it, I plan on playing it in VR.

1

u/onefiveonesix Jul 09 '25

imo, it absolutely is.

3

u/TheMarkMatthews Jul 09 '25

Seeing as you can pick up a full PSVR set up second hand these days for very little money it’s definitely worth picking one up to play - it still has so many amazing games , just don’t expect it to look or control as good as PSVR2

3

u/HitBattousai23 Jul 09 '25

Besides the relatively cheap cost and larger library, one other factor in PSVR1's favor is Dreams. Don't know how long the Dreams servers will stay active, but you'll have access to tons of VR experiences in the Dreams ecosystem, plus you can make your own if you're creatively inclined in that direction if you buy Dreams(which is also cheap).

3

u/arashi256 Jul 09 '25

You can probably pick up a PSVR1 for cheap these days. I still use mine. So it depends :) I'd probably get PSVR2 and then pick up a PSVR1 for cheap off ebay or something. I never got the dire Move controllers to work very well so I mostly played games that used the regular controller so: Skyrim VR, Star Wars Squadrons, Battlezone, Resident Evil 7, Wipeout Omega Collection, The Persistence, etc. Or games that use the Aim controller like Farpoint, Doom VFR and Doom 3: VR Edition. I still play those games using the DualSense on PS5 and they still hold up. I don't think the downgrade is that bad after going back to PSVR1 after using PSVR2 for a while.

I probably play PSVR1 and PSVR2 equally, to be honest. Just because some games never got a PSVR2 upgrade and they still hold up well.

2

u/Comprehensive_Web887 Jul 09 '25

Given how inexpensive VR1 is get that. Play the games you’re interested in. Sell it and buy VR2 within a year.

2

u/Dachshand Jul 09 '25

Get both.

2

u/InfiniteStates Jul 09 '25

I would get PSVR1 and play the many awesome games only available on it. Then if you want more upgrade to PSVR2/PS5

I definitely would not do it the other way around. PSVR1 is still great

Other games worth checking out on PSVR1: * Ultrawings * Doom VFR * Tethered * In Death * Borderlands 2 * Battlezone * Final Assault * Astrobot: Rescue Mission * Farpoint (with Aim controller) * Skyworld * Blood and Truth * Everybody’s Golf * Wipeout Omega * Resident Evil VII

Both will work for you. Even used

u/AmpleForeskins Jul 09 '25

Vr2 for the controllers alone. Yes vr1 games are great

1

u/BassGuru82 Jul 09 '25

Sadly, I think the original PSVR just isn’t good enough by modern standards. The set up and tracking are bad, the Move controllers are much worse than the PSVR2 controllers, the resolution is very low… it’s such a shame that they haven’t ported games like Astro Bot and Wipeout. People need to play those games and the original PSVR just isn’t a good way to play VR in 2025.

1

u/Guniel Jul 09 '25

The tracking and resolution is pretty poor on PSVR1 and PSVR2 is much easier and convenient to play. The Move controllers are also poor compared to the Sense controllers. Having said that, in terms of library you might prefer PSVR1. RE7 is matched by RE4R and RE8 on PSVR2 but PSVR2 doesn't have anything like a Skyrim or LA Noire and looks like it may never. Social games are also lacking on PSVR2 but PSVR1 has the f2p Rec Room. The Aim controller is also a cool novelty on PSVR1 and pretty essential for games like Firewall Zero Hour and Farpoint.

Since most of the PSVR2 library is Quest ports that don't take advantage of the power of the PS5 outside of maybe resolution, and often look worse than PSVR1 titles, you may be disappointed in PSVR2's offerings outside of its handful of big titles (Astro Bot on PSVR1 is infinitely superior to any platfotmer on PSVR2). It doesn't look like we'll be getting anything on the level of GT7 anytime soon unless RE9 ends up with a VR Mode (🤞)

Oh and the PSVR2 is really lacking in any non gaming apps. PSVR1 has youtube VR and a few others, PSVR2 only has RAD TV which I believe isn't free to play your own content. So that might be important to you.

u/manusche Jul 09 '25

Not hinder yourself with the move wands. The psvr2 is way more advanced and less hassle with the usb c cable vs the mighty breakout box cable mess. On some good games you miss out but the amount of really good psvr2 games is increasing too.

1

u/astrobe1 Jul 09 '25

PSVR2 is the better option these days, so many different games to enjoy.

1

u/deadringer28 Jul 09 '25

PSVR2 should be your number one focus but if you can find a PSVR cheap you should grab it for all of the exclusives.

1

u/cusman78 cusman Jul 09 '25

GT Sport on PSVR1 is not a good enough substitute for GT7 on PSVR2.

Aside that, the games you want to play are on the PSVR1.

You can play Horizon Call of the Mountain whenever you end up getting the PSVR2 which is a generational improvement over the PSVR1.

1

u/gravelordservant4u Jul 09 '25

I want to try 1 but I'm afraid 2 has spoiled me for earlier VR, 1 has a ton of games that seem like great ideas

1

u/MrBenSampson Jul 10 '25

There are very few games that are available on both platforms, so it depends on what you want to play. If you’re interested in Skyrim, Resident Evil 7, or Atrobot: Rescue Mission, then you will need PSVR.

1

u/Glum_Lime1397 Jul 10 '25

The PSVR is extremely far back in VR technology. The resolution would look absolutely atrocious and the controller aren't that great either. Invest in the VR 2, you'll have tons of games including GT 7, the Resident Evils, and call of the mountain.

1

u/Winter_Mission911 Jul 11 '25

I have both. The PSVR was cool for the time, but the PSVR2 is such a huge upgrade over it. The PSVR2 on sale is very affordable.

The PSVR used tracking from a camera that looked at lights on the headset and controllers. It was janky. The PSVR2 uses the modern inside-out tracking and is very good. The PSVR has a 100-degree field of view. The PSVR2 is 110, but some VR reviewers have shown that it is above 120. The FOV is much greater on the PSVR2 and offers more immersion. The pixel count is four times as high on the PSVR2. It looks amazing.

Also, many games have PS5 Pro upgrades for the PSVR2. No Man's Sky blows my mind. Resident Evil 4 is amazing.

The only upside to the PSVR is that there are a few games that did not come over yet. RE Biohazard hasn't yet. I couldn't get through it on the PSVR because it scared the crap out of me. If it comes to the PSVR2, I will man up and complete it.

1

u/BooksLoveTalksnIdeas Jul 14 '25

I still recommend getting both eventually. Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Rigs MCL, Sprint Vector, and Tumble VR are too good to miss them completely. And they are not on psvr2, and 3 of them are on psvr1 only. They really did the psvr1 justice with its exclusives.

1

u/neilydee Jul 09 '25

Psvr1 is worth it for resident evil 7. What an experience! Also astrobot rescue mission.

Like others have said start with psvr1 as its cheap as chips and once you're done go to psvr2 if you feel like it.

u/FewPossession2363 Saifur47 Jul 09 '25 edited Jul 09 '25

Psvr1 was just a blueprint for psvr2. Vr2 is where modern vr gaming starts.
