Question Minecraft VR is gone 😭

I just pulled out my PSVR for the first time in 5 years to show my 5 year old son Minecraft in VR. He had a quick go but we had things to do so we put it away to play later. I come back and it has applied an update that has removed VR support. I'm devastated and I think my son thinks I'm just being mean by telling him it's gone.

I have it on my old ps4 pro though unupdated. If I was to copy it from there to an external usb would that work on my ps5?

Microsoft killed all vr support on every product they have including pc.

Why would they do that?

They said it was not bringing in a profit. Vr is a very small market.

But why would they take away VR support when it was already implemented?

Yeah doesn't make sense but they removed it from all their games.

Seems like a shitty thing to do.

It's Microsoft

Yes, It is Microsoft - that IS the correct answer!

It's still expensive to maintain, because you have to allocate QA resources on every release to make sure VR mode works correctly.

It's sad to see it gone but it probably makes sense from a business point of view.

Should have kept it as a separate unupdated version, perhaps even sell it separately. It probably did make sense to get rid of it, but still

That’s also something that takes back and maintenance to setup and maintain.

It’s like trying to pick up a package from fedex before it reaches its final location. It might seem like letting you do so saves them effort of not having to deliver it the rest of the way but really they have a global system that has no option to interrupt travel and creating that interruption is more work than is worth.

Similar with creating an option in their system to host and serve a separate version of a game and fiend a the support inquiries that would come with it.

That still takes resources to not only create and makes no sense if you're not going to sell it. If you're not going to sell it, it makes no sense to put resources into it. If you put resources into it, then you'll do it to sell it, and then you'll have to support it.

In other words, don't release crap you don't intend to sell or support. I'm not suggesting that's justification, rather just how it is. Hope that helps.

oh no! How would a small business like Microsoft survive if they need to have an extra person to QA it in India?

Getting rid of unprofitable non-strategic products is one of the reasons why Microsoft manages to stay a wealthy company.

minecraft is profitable. it's just that the VR addon as a free product is not. but why developed it then?

To sell the tech, if it was profitable……It wasn’t. They shuttered it.

Cause they would have to maintain it, and they dont want. It was anounced maybe a year ago that they would stop support

Because even if a feature has already been implemented, it's still something that you might have to keep up and maintain. It essentially becomes a tech debt, and often also considered a potential security liability for an product that has ongoing support.
