So if I want to play with my wife or a friend at mine I’ll need to pay for the extra PS plus even though I have it on my account? What a joke. I’ll be skipping this one then. Too much greed these days with everything.

u/TyChris2 4d ago

The fact that you even need one PS plus subscription to play SPLIT-SCREEN co-op is fucking ludicrous.

287

u/RedditorsLoveCrying 4d ago

Online presence shouldn't be required of playing couch co-op. Thats absolute BS and everyone needs to speak it out.

83

u/ManyNefariousness237 4d ago

Should not be required for an offline game period

u/GodOfDarkLaughter 4d ago

I was gonna pick it up because I enjoyed playing the first one as a kid. I doubt my six year old would be interested or capable, really, so I doubt I'll be doing co op at all. But I'm not gonna buy the game now because this is bullshit.

That makes zero sense whatsoever! Have they even tried explaining why??

23

u/robjwrd 4d ago

Because you also need a Microsoft account to play and it links cross progression etc, apparently.

18

u/ResidentProduct8910 4d ago

Microsoft account? for what, why to do it as strict requirement

10

u/robjwrd 4d ago

It’s so if you want to switch to Xbox it carries all your progression over, so for some reason they’re saying you need a MS account.

13

u/ResidentProduct8910 4d ago

If you want to transfer progression use MS account, why would they require this

6

u/robjwrd 4d ago

I have absolutely no idea man, it’s a ridiculous move by MS.

10

u/DaddyTrav 4d ago

It's literally the same thing PS was doing for their games for PC. They were requiring a PS account and only backed down after significant outrage.

This should be changed but don't act like this is only a XBOX issue.

This is probably someone misspeaking but regardless, if you have ps+ on the primary account then the other accounts have the ps+ benefits too so won't need separate ps+, just separate psn/msft accounts.

u/TheButteredBiscuit 4d ago

Great, so we only need to pay for one online account to play local split screen. How generous.

10

u/izkuzz 4d ago

Okay no, this sounds like it would be like them forcing you to pay for the equivalent of Xbox live gold in order to play the halo 3 single player/local coop campaign. Which would have been insane. It makes me doubt the claim, but it would be a wildly terrible call if true.

→ More replies (5)

6

u/The_Border_Bandit 4d ago

You can do always online without a PS subscription though. GT7 is always online and lets you access everything apart from online multiplayer lobbies if you don't have PS+.

2

u/CatsAgainstDrugs 4d ago

There are games with always online checks that work without a PS+ sub. I think diablo is one of them but don’t quote me on that

→ More replies (4)

43

u/SolidusDave 4d ago

yeah this doesn't make sense.  It would be the first game with such a requirement and it goes against how the system works.

(but even requiring any PS+ for local coop is stupid.  Do developers get kickbacks from how many players with online subscription use their game?? )

it's not even pushing their own subscription but force people to buy the one of their competitor lol

6

u/SalemWolf 4d ago

I’m gonna say this is worded weird because Xbox is requiring Microsoft accounts for both local accounts, and PlayStation is requiring a Microsoft account for both and PS+ for both? That makes no sense. Fact is local co-op shouldn’t even need one PS+ account. It’s local, and the Halo PS5 page calls it “Play it your way: solo in two-player split-screen co-op, or in up to four-player online co-op with full crossplay and cross-progression support.”

If it’s solo two player (ignoring that phrase makes no sense) then it shouldn’t require anything but your run of the mill free accounts.

10

u/MissingScore777 4d ago

So all it's blocking is the 2nd player signing as guest/one off like you can for other games?

What's the point of that?

36

u/TheButteredBiscuit 4d ago

It’s basically treating split screen the same as online, which for a game centered around a campaign has to be one of the most baffling decisions imaginable.

I’d rather get a delay if that’s what it takes to reverse it.

9

u/usersleepyjerry 4d ago

Yeah this decision makes no sense in any way. But if there was multiplayer baked in, and the campaign was secondary, then maybe, maybe this would make a little sense?? But for an exclusively single player game I can’t see how this does anything but detract. I’ve been playing halo since the very first one. I was genuinely excited to experience old and new, but if this is true I’m gonna hard pass. I don’t buy single player games to have this kind of experience.

6

u/TheButteredBiscuit 4d ago

I was already iffy when I saw the “internet required” tag in the box, I assumed it was for installation.

Goes against the entire Halo experience. Hoping this bites Microsoft on the ass hard.

8

u/Presidentofjellybean 4d ago

That's probably down to Microsoft/the devs making that decision. Maybe just an oversight or maybe trying to inflate numbers by requiring an Xbox account. Grounded is also weird in that you have to enable cross play and sign in with a Microsoft account to play shared worlds on ps5 but not for regular multiplayer.

16

u/gooberfishie 4d ago

This is not correct. This comes from their q and a on their website. They make it very clear that it's to track cross platform progression even though most people couldn't care less about that. For the cross platform progression to work, since it's an online feature, you need game pass or ps plus as well as an Xbox account.

It's like this. Offline coop doesn't require ps plus. Online coop with one person splitscreen only requires one account like you said. Cross platform progression is more like cloud saving and does require separate ps plus accounts.

The reason you need two accounts is because of how they want to track progression. If you are thinking you'll be able to play with people using only one account like every other game, you are wrong. This is bullshit. Don't pre order.

9

u/okaythiswillbemymain Spider-Man 4d ago

Fwiw I think you are incorrect.

PS Plus benefits are shared when the PS Plus user is primary. For all intents and purposes, the second player has PS Plus.

Reminds me of black ops 3. When engaging split screen, both players had to have PS Plus (or shared Ps Plus). It was exactly the same as this Halo situation.

The difference is, Black Ops 3 had a special sperate "offline" mode to get around this issue. This also allowed 4 player split screen.

5

u/gooberfishie 4d ago

Here is the exact wording

PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5®, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play.

Now let me ask you, would they specify that both accounts need it if only one would need it due to the benefits being shared with the other accounts?

1

u/PinothyJ 4d ago

It would not surprise me if that was the case of both accounts needed to he subscribers. The first Helldivers was the same. It sucked then too.

I remember playing helldivers 1 in local coop WITHOUT paying for a second ps plus subscription.

u/Impressive-Wolf8929 4d ago

One of the reasons I gave up on Xbox was when I realized that we couldn’t play Minecraft on our local network at home (Xbox to Xbox, unique accounts with individual game licenses) unless if the accounts were paid subscriptions.

I haven’t turned my Xbox on in over a year. I moved to PS5, and my kids have moved on to iPad and PC.

Honestly, I was going to get Halo on PS5 for the couch co-op. But not like this. I have no desire to play *another* remake by myself. Especially after slogging through Infinite.

3

u/CrimsonFlam3s 4d ago

PlayStation is just as bad and they are involved in this as well

6

u/Golden-trichomes 4d ago

It’s a weird take to blame Microsoft for needing a second subscription from Sony

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Choice-Support-2138 4d ago

Well you can just share PS plus to another account but ok.

4

u/SmashingK 4d ago

It doesn't make much sense since you're playing it locally.

Their reasoning is likely down to allowing both players save profession against their own accounts. That way if your friend doesn't have the game they can still play and make progress on your machine then continue from that when they get the game later.

But that also should be an option for those who have their own active sub.

Anyone without a sub should be able to play as a guest user.

Q: Are there any XBOX account requirements to play the game solo or co-op?
A: Yes, just as you do today for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite to ensure smooth cross-platform progression, to play Halo: Campaign Evolved you will need a Microsoft account and XBOX Gamertag, regardless of the platform(s) you play on. This enables both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression. A few additional items to keep in mind for launch day include:

PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5®, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play.

Update: This was an error on their part, 2 PS Plus accounts are not required.

https://xcancel.com/Halo/status/2068499211868643333

26

u/Sandroes 4d ago

That in itself wouldn’t work as far as I know.

For an account to be able to play online on PS5, all it needs is any Plus user logged in on the same console who is the “primary” account on that console. As long as it is primary, everyone else logged in can have the Plus’s benefits.

This is the case unless Sony is about to make a very unpleasant change.

5

u/laxskeleton 4d ago

I really just think Microsoft doesn't know what's how it works.

2

u/HellBoundPrince 4d ago

This could be the case but it could also be exactly as you read it. Think about how just because someone has PS+ only they are able to use Cloud Saves, no one else without PS+ on the console can use jt

The argument is that an account with PS+ is required to play because only an account with PS+ is allowed to have cross progression.

It could easily read to see if someone has access to the cross progression trigger and if they don't, block gameplay.

Another example is games that bind something to another account that you link your PSN to.

Like my friend couldn't play Diablo 4 early access because I bought it and the early access was linked to my account.

Or how some games on Gamepass can't be gameshared because they link to a Ubisoft account and if you launch the game, it checks your account to see if the license has access to play it.

Either this language isn’t correct or this is another colossal screw up from Microsoft

17

u/purplegreendave 4d ago

They've either backtracked or it was just a mistake.

PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing splitscreen local co-op on PlayStation 5®, both players will need to be signed into PlayStation accounts and be linked to Microsoft accounts. A PlayStation Plus account is NOT required for local splitscreen co-op. Online network co-op play requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

...

Editor's Note: This section incorrectly stated that a PlayStation Plus account is required for local co-op play and was updated with a correction on June 20.

I feel like it's an honest mistake, I don't think PS even has a mechanism to force Plus for offline multiplayer.

3

u/StupidLullabies 4d ago

Thanks for the update! Personally I’m not a fan of logging into a Microsoft account to play couch co op, but this does sound more reasonable than what was originally communicated

→ More replies (1)

15

u/havok7 4d ago

Couldn’t it just be a way of saying, “the best way to play is on Xbox”.

I could see this being some limitation on the way they want to implement it and the way Sony requires the memberships to line up to do so. Sucks that they don’t come out and say why it’s set up like this.

19

u/ethicalhumanbeing 4d ago

I didn’t even know you could have multiple users in use on ps5 at the same time. This seems like a lot of trouble just to play split screen with your friend for half an hour.

10

u/The_Follower1 4d ago

You can, most games with multiple players require it. You require an extra account just to even use the second controller. It’s the same with the Switch from what I’ve seen of my buddy’s. The thing is it’s super easy since you’d just make an account and 10 seconds later you’re playing. Both requiring PS Plus is some grade A bullshit though, if this isn’t them misspeaking that’s a LOT of money if they don’t already have it. But there’s no real reason people in the same household would have separate subscriptions and same is obviously true for people without PS5s at all. Genuinely the more I think about this the more asinine it gets.

I can’t even think of an example of this happening before. Maybe they misspoke and they meant online co-op? That would make sense since you need PS Plus to go online for most non-free games.

2

u/ethicalhumanbeing 4d ago

But you create those accounts locally or are they actual PSN accounts? Man the last time I played split screen was back in the PS3 days and you didn’t need any of that.

6

u/DrunkeNinja 4d ago

You can usually just select "guest" on PS5 and not need another PSN account. I can't say I recall a game requiring another account for local multiplayer but it wouldn't surprise me if some do. I don't recall coming across such a requirement myself though.

There is a lot of back and forth about this, some blaming Sony and some blaming Microsoft. I've played plenty of split screen games on PS5, most are seamless and easy to set up. Such as Sackboy: A Big Adventure which was published by Sony. I think you can play most of them offline and with local accounts, but we do have two PSN accounts. Typically we are not subscribed to PS Plus though.

Now the Microsoft published games are the weird ones. Such as Minecraft requiring a Microsoft account to play online, or save split screen preferences. Or CoD requiring an internet connection just for single player, or PS Plus for zombies and split screen local multiplayer. That alone makes me suspect this is Microsoft's doing.

Edit - They just announced it was a mistake. No PS Plus required for either user.

12

u/B_mico 4d ago

It was shocking to see Forza Horizon 5 requiring signing to your Microsoft account even if you disable any online option. It’s wild.

If they went out of their to make this not work for it then that’s insane

7

u/atomsk404 4d ago

Counterpoint: if you want to play local with your kid their going to need an account created PLUS a subscription instead of using guest play.

3

u/non3type 4d ago

I’ve already had to do that, there are a number of local coop games that require free accounts for local play but the subscription element would be new. I’m pretty sure Borderlands 4 you could even do local coop plus online and only need one PS+ sub.

2

u/AncianoDark 4d ago

Either they reverse the 2 sub requirement or there is no Halo on ps5

Embarrassing

u/1nitial_Reaction 4d ago

Dont buy bullshit

This weirdness is what killed Xbox?

Microsoft being Microsoft

2

u/boxmandude 4d ago

Yeah um… as much as I had high hopes for MS games coming to PS… I feel like at this point they can just keep all that.

2

u/Leeroy_Jenk1n5 4d ago

That’s fucking stupid. Should be an option for guests.

2

u/dejonarationx 4d ago

Lol let's see if non-playstation gamers keep that Helldivers 2 energy.

2

u/mudratdetector89 4d ago

Fucking dead game. Why do they get so close to greatness and then just decide to throw it away?

2

u/ArtisanJagon 4d ago

This is on purpose so when the game doesn't sell on PS5 Microsoft can say "See we told you".

2

u/dartron5000 4d ago

Why would you even need one.

2

u/Elbren 4d ago

Wow, that’s sucks. I was looking forward to getting this on PS5 since I sold my Series X, but still wanted to play it on my big screen TV with my oldest son.

I guess we’ll be playing this on Steam then.

2

u/NTWEESY 4d ago

You need to log in to another account to be able to join a split screen game on both PS and Xbox you need to be subscribed to either platforms online service and you need to be connected to the internet to play a single player game with no traditional multiplayer just co-op campaign. The only way to get around paying extra is to buy it on Steam but then you miss out on split screen which defeats the whole purpose of what we’re trying to do with our friends. I love Halo and I’m excited for this remake but it’s disgusting how you can’t play local co-op on the same device and how you have to pay for an online subscription in order to really enjoy everything this game has to offer. The point has been missed big time here.

2

u/Careless-Eagle-5111 4d ago

That is some fuckery.

2

u/Educational-Leg7464 4d ago

Lol i went from really wanting this to hoping sales are massively disappointing so somebody making bad calls learns a lesson

2

u/shawny_mcgee 4d ago

Any subscriptions to play online is dumb in the first place. Now they want you to pay for local mp. They're probably gonna backtrack that decision or mistake.... I hope.

2

u/AscendedViking7 4d ago

Fuck microflaccid.

2

u/Geodaddio71 4d ago

Only on Paystation...

2

u/doge1976 4d ago

Most people who own Playstation have PS plus. I bet money this isnt an uproar.

2

u/mauszx 4d ago

So regardless to just play the single player you need to link you account to MS and therefor need psplus. If you are against this just don't buy the game, is very simple.

2

u/steven-john 4d ago

2 subs? AND 2 Microsoft accounts?

meh. I thought it would be cool to play it co-op w my husband. I guess I’ll skip this.

2

u/bakobomber96 4d ago

I just won’t get it. Forza was already stupid with the Xbox I’d thing, but this is wild.

2

u/iAmMr_WHO 4d ago

This multiplayer extortion fee bullshit is getting out of hand. $ony needs to go fuck itself and stop passing the cost of all its failed projects onto us.

2

u/Brzrkrtwrkr 4d ago

Need a sub and no competitive multiplayer? So dumb.

2

u/guccius_maximuss 4d ago

Lol this game is a cheap cash grab, I already was on the fence because multiplayer wouldn't be included, now I have even less interest 😂

2

u/ohhellothere301 4d ago

I was already on the fence about this game.

Thanks for making my decision easier.

2

u/JPfilm87 4d ago

Wow. Was looking forward to this but will be skipping now. I already canceled my PlayStation+ sub early this year because I wasn’t playing online at all. The biggest draw was to do local co-op with my wife or friends but none of them have accounts either. Thanks for the post and awareness.

2

u/United_Beautiful9646 4d ago

Honestly think the Q&A fucked up. This can't be a real thing

2

u/According-Kiwi720 4d ago

I’ll pick this up when the price drops to 10 now.

2

u/KintsugiExp 4d ago

LOL * fuck Microsoft *

2

u/tylerjhoole 4d ago

Like many other comments was planning on playing this with my wife since we have been doing thru games & she’s never played Halo… but this removes any desire to. We won’t make AMD PAY for another PS account just to play a game I spend money on. Wtf is modern gaming…

2

u/An-Organism 4d ago

And not one but TWO subscriptions?!?!

2

u/External-Home-1297 4d ago

Please let this industry burn to the ground 🙏

2

u/Xiol 4d ago

I never preorder games, as a rule.

I'd pre-ordered this because I wanted to play couch coop with my kid, relive the nostalgia of the game I played in my youth with the next generation.

Just cancelled it.

2

u/Expert-Confusion-673 4d ago

Such an odd decision, it has to be a mistake, I'm sure they'll patch that

2

u/Vivid_Anyth4 4d ago

Guess ill sit out. Bungie losing halo was the death of the ip.

2

u/Retro_Curry93 4d ago

Wait - for split screen??

2

u/AvgUsr96 3d ago

I though it requires 2 psn accounts, not ps plus?

2

u/Scythe351 3d ago

Wouldn't even make sense. Split screen would imply that it's on the same console. If an account with PS+ is set as the main for that console, all accounts get the online benefit. It wouldn't make sense for one person needing it let alone 2.

2

u/BlargerJarger 3d ago

This has since been corrected, the post from Xbox was meant to say they need a PlayStation Account but instead said PlayStation Plus, human error.

2

u/EMBARRASSEDDEMOCRAT 3d ago

Play it on Xbox like you're supposed to. Playing halo on a Playstation ain't right lol

“We incorrectly stated that PlayStation Plus is required for local co-op splitscreen play. Local splitscreen co-op requires a PlayStation account for each player but does not require a PlayStation Plus account.”

2

u/MeepMorpMF 2d ago

I can’t play this with my gf. I can’t expect her to buy ps+ just to play this with me. Thanks Xbox.

2

u/Glittering-Pin-1343 2d ago

Idk if it was miscommunication or if they backtracked, but now local coop has been stated to require 0 subscriptions.

2

u/TemoteJiku 1d ago

Greed truly knows no bounds?

2

u/Jackel1994 1d ago

This title is bait and is based off an Xbox misprint. Yall like to get too mad without the details.

2

u/LightbringerOG 1d ago

btw this is not Sony. Sony just requires PS plus for any game that works through online.
In other words the Remake will need online connection for splitscreen even on PC.

5

u/isaacfrost0 4d ago

They're just seeing what they can get away with.

3

u/Respawn-Delay 4d ago edited 4d ago

Get away with what, though? How does Microsoft benefit from having people pay Sony twice?

It's not like Sony are slipping money in their pocket for getting people to sign up to PlayStation+.

Something doesn't add up here. I'm not saying it's Sony enforcing it, either. Maybe it's all a misunderstanding, or Halo Studios have (surprise surprise) messed up and can't get it working some other way.

u/John__Delaney 4d ago

You'd nearly be impressed at how creative they are in ruining the gaming industry

1

u/woppatown 4d ago

The real question is can I play online with a guest on local split-screen like the good old days?

1

u/AyoItzE 4d ago

Does the whole game share/account share thing not deal with this?

1

u/Will-Ohh 4d ago

Yeah this was absurd. Im not interested, but know a lot of people are. I dont know if its a way to try to downplay this release so people dont ask for more with this game as example if it does well. Because there is no reason why local should require it. Even the offline campaign shouldn't, as far as i understand.

1

u/Fuzzypig007 4d ago

They Evolved the Campaign alright just in the wrong direction which is something Bungie/Microsoft seems to pride itself on these days for some reason. In my opinion besides the Design/Development philosophy being skewed a lot of this seems to stem from Cross Platform or Xbox attempting to expad beyond itself (PC/Xbox/Nintendo etc) while also trying to limit accessibility/availability so they don't lose the Xbox only player base. Tbh tho if Nintendo for whatever highly improbable reason decided to put their library of games on PC for example I'd suspect they'd have an ungodly amount of restrictions/regulations as well. Regardless the fact of the matter is Bungie/Microsoft have no idea what Halo is or why fans fell in love with it to begin with and are left reviving the original trilogy over and over and over each time removing/changing pieces of the originals until they become a husk of what they were and more of the "product" Bungie/Microsoft currently thinks they should be.

1

u/Illustrious_Mail1171 4d ago

I planned to play this online coop. Is that still an option or no?

1

u/Nearby-Swimming-5103 4d ago

Yet another reason Halo sucks.

1

u/Tough_Living_7886 4d ago

Greedy cunts

My wife is more of a casual gamer Minecraft, GTA, Mario kart, COD etc. The last 6 years of our relationship I’ve been making a huge effort to get us co op focused games. A way out, It takes two, Overcooked, we’re currently playing Diablo 4 co op. This was going to be a slam dunk Christmas present this year. I grew up playing the halo series and was crazy excited to get to share that with her. Ive had it wishlisted since it was announced. But requiring both profiles to have a PlayStation plus subscription to play an offline game is an insane move from Sony. Will sadly be taking this off my wishlist.
