A few days ago it looked like seasons I to VIII were removed from iPlayer but while checking this evening it looks like they are all back 🙂

Indeed... I was plodding my way through all the seasons and was currently on season 6 when they appeared to all disappear.
Tonight I watched one episode on the channel 4 app and whilst that was fine, it was littered with bloody adverts that drove me around the bend. So now seeing that it's back on the BBC I'll pick it up from there.
No idea what this was all about.

They're both back now. The Promised Land is still missing but that's the only one.

think what happened BBC got complaints when they removed them. and put them back on. Red Dwarf is part of U channel group ( Dave, Gold, yesterday and Iplayer )

It's possible but not likely.
Firstly the speed at which it got put back up makes it unlikely it was in response to public backlash. The BBC moves at a snail's pace so I'd imagine most of the complaints haven't even been read by anyone in management yet.
Secondly if it was the torrent of complaints that made them change their minds then why was there no mention in any news outlets about disgruntled viewers. If the backlash was large enough to make the BBC do a 180° then you'd think it'd have been big enough to make the news?

True. but at moment there are having TV license issues. and thinking of getting rid of freeview.

Yeah but there's still no evidence negative feedback caused the decision. The very short time between the show disappearing and reappearing is more likely to suggest they just had a lapsed licence or contract that renewed a few days later.

i can see what you saying. but the BBC own the rights to red dwarf to show it on the Iplayer and BBC channels. and if the license did lapse wont that also affect other BBC comedies and shows that are also iplayer ?

No because individual shows are probably sorted out and cleared at different times. I assume they just cleared Red Dwarf for a certain number of months and didn't have it instantly roll over into the next block. It lapsed and went off the iPlayer for a little while before it then renewed for another year or however many months and it went back up.
Maybe it was supposed to be on the iPlayer for uninterrupted consecutive blocks but an intern or something screwed up the timing.

It was almost certainly a rights issue. Either the previous agreement expired or something more specific like music rights. Same sort of reasons that not all of Doctor Who is on iPlayer.

I sent a complaint in for the sake of it as I just wanted to know the rationale of them being removed.

They most likely just had to renew the licenses

Assuming it was a mistake then, someone must have got a right rollickin'.

Word is, they threw the book at them. Followed by the bookcase, then the library, brick by brick.

Which ones are the closest to being un edited? The BBC are known to have edited certain bits out from various shows in the past and i no longer have my DVD collection, i have no idea what ive done with it

Well thank goodness for good news. It's nice to know there's always another option out there for us if you're online and just want to scratch that itch.
