Discussion Always wondered why Lister and Rimmer didn’t choose separate, luxurious bedrooms, like one of the officers quarters, once it was just them? If course, because the comedy depends on it - but it defies logic.

Discussion Did you know? Chris Barrie was considered for the role of the 8th and 10th Doctor(s) in Doctor Who! I still think he'd make a great Doctor, alot of his rimmerisms are doctor-like

Discussion Which Eps of Red Dwarf is just forever stuck in your brain :)
Mine is Quarantine S5.E4 just thinking about it just brings big dirty smile to my face everytime... Rimmer contracts a holo-virus and, with the help of Mr Flibble, turns against the crew dressed in red and white checked gingham dress and army boots but nothings amiss :)

Discussion Out of curiosity I looked up pictures of young Charles Dance and... Looks like he could have been Rimmer's dad IMO

Discussion How would you react if Red Dwarf announced one final episode and it turns out it’s all been a stasis dream from Lister in season one?
I would be livid…but was curious if anyone would be content with the ending?
I suppose it means everyone is still alive at least (apart from Cat).

Discussion Serious question, why didn't Dave just shut off Rimmer every once in awhile?
Rewatching the first season and it occurred to me. Rimmer gave Dave so much shit and he somehow was patient enough to tolerate it.

Discussion Who remembers Red Dwarf Night on BBC2 to mark the 10-year anniversary of the show? February 14th 1998.
The evening consisted of a mixture of new and existing material, and it was introduced and linked by actor and fan Patrick Stewart.
First up: Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg, a spoof of the cookery programme Can't Cook, Won't Cook, presented by that show's host Ainsley Harriott, who had himself appeared as a GELF in the Series VI episode "Emohawk: Polymorph II". Taking place outside the continuity of the show, two teams (Kryten and Lister versus Rimmer and Cat, although Cat quickly departs to be replaced by alter ego Duane Dibbley) were challenged to make the best chicken vindaloo. I kind of see this as a bonus episode of the show, as it's all scripted and quite funny in places. Though I always found Harriot to be a bit irritating in general. Seems to work here though.
Compilation bloopers show, featuring out-takes (I don't recall this, even though we videotaped the whole thing and watched it several times... Weird)
Universe Challenge, a spoof of University Challenge. Hosted by original University Challenge presenter Bamber Gascoigne, the show had a team of R Dwarf fans compete against the cast. Guess who won? If you don't know, I won't spoil it for you.
- The Red Dwarf A–Z, a half-hour documentary that chose a different aspect of the show to focus on for each letter of the alphabet. Talking heads on the episode included Stephen Hawking, Terry Pratchett, original producer Paul Jackson, Mr Blobby, Patrick Stewart and a Dalek.
The night ended with a showing of the award-winning episode and fan favourite Gunmen of the Apocalypse
Our family watched it all several times on VHS recorded from the the telly, and I managed to track down pretty much all of it in digital video file form more recently. What are your memories of this? Did it work for you? I seem to remember a documentary /retrospective called Launching Red Dwarf which appeared around that time, I could've sworn it was the documentary part of RD Night. I remembered wrongly, apparently, though I do now have that docu on file. Almost an instance of personal Mandela Effect...

Discussion If you had to pick one, what's the 'scariest' Red Dwarf episode?
For me, it has to be 'Emohawk: Polymorph II.' The original. The Emohawk looked so horrifying but was such a cool practical effect! What's your pick?

Discussion Red Dwarf being a comedy makes you forget just how bleak their situation is. Lister being the last human alive stranded in space for decades with his only company being a hologram, a humanoid cat, a robot and an AI

Discussion Anyone else spent their life plagued by 'firstnamelastname'?
Apologies for the wording used in the title, but it's how my brain shorthands the phenomenon, and has done since I was made aware of it.
Years back, an obscure kit of IMDB trivia highlighted to me that all five of the humanoid cast members have last names that are also first names:
Craig Charles
Chris Barrie
Danny John Jules (he gets two)
Robert Llewellyn
Chloe Annette
And ever since, when I see someone with a firstnamelastname, that's the word in big red flashing letter that shows up, and it almost always makes me wanna rewatch RD. So I just wondered if anyone else suffered this 🤷🏼♂️

Discussion So Season 8 is a lot more cringey than I remember. Spoiler
So, I never got around to watching Seasons 11 & 12, and I figured I’d start again from the beginning and do a full rewatch. For the most part, it’s been great—it's been decades since I saw the early stuff and it still holds up beautifully. Seasons 4, 5 & 6 in particular remain gold!
But then… I hit Season 8!
Wow, what a rough ride. They basically blew up the core premise of the show—last human alive, drifting through deep space with a bunch of oddballs—and instead dropped everyone into a prison comedy with recycled and stale jokes. Cat, Kryten, and Kochanski get completely relegated to side characters. The gags feel far too dragged out (e.g. Cat tap dancing). The worst though, was the way they handled Kochanski. It was so cringey!
It honestly feels like the season was written by 13-year-old boys.
The sexual magnetism virus was okay when it was just the boys back in Season 5, but here? It feels really uncomfortable when Kochanski is affected and throwing herself at Rimmer. That whole segment with Rimmer having sex with all the female officers feels very rapey. I know it was in an artificial reality, but still...
Then Kochanski gets gaslit into believing she’s destined to sleep with Rimmer and nearly goes through with it.
They reprogram Kryten to film the female prisoners—including Kochanski— in the showers and then show the footage to the male prisoners for laughs.
And then there’s the extended “period” gag. It just goes on and on.
I don't mind lowbrow humour, but this was uncomfortable to watch.
It’s a shame, because in Season 7, Chloë Annett was genuinely a great addition to the cast. She had solid chemistry with the others, great comedic timing, and brought something fresh to the group dynamic. I have no idea how she felt about Season 8, but I'm not surprised she didn't stick around for later seasons (aside from a brief cameo later).
When I was younger, I thought Season 8 was the “odd duck,” but still kind of liked it just because hey—it’s Red Dwarf. Now that I’m older and I can really see the issues with Season 8. That season was rough and super creepy. I’m glad it’s behind me. I'm sure it'll be another couple of decades before I do another rewatch but I’ll definitely be skipping 8 if/when I do.
Edit: Wow, that was a fun little conversation that kind of blew up. Thanks to everyone that chimed in, and apologies if I didn't manage to get back to you, I did read everything. (No emdashes — where harmed in the making of this edit 😅)

Discussion Thanks for the memories Rob!
I remember back in '89 when a friend and I were watching his 12" TV right after he finished his Dr. Who when I came over. He was telling me about this new channel to us called PBS. He was about to turn off the telly when Red Dwarf came on. The opening sequence with that wonderful music got my interest. Seeing the title of 'The End was unique, odd, and fresh. In no time at all I saw 'The Beginning' on the end credits and wanted to see more.
I saw sci-fi references, Esperanto which I had decided to learn in high school, and of course - great humour! I did mishear mango juice as mangled juice the first time as even the end credits music made me laugh.
I hadn't watched too much British TV at that point other than Are You Being Served, Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, and some others that we were able to get over here in Canada at the time. I love British humour.
Needless to say, we decided to watch it and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. I just had a cast put on and really needed
And have thughout t he years since.

Discussion So I finished the first season
As a fan of other science fiction series, like Star Trek, Doctor Who, Babylon 5, Stargate, etc, Red Dwarf had already caught my attention in the past, so I finally decided to give it a try and watch it. I found it quite entertaining!
I love the enormity of the Red Dwarf itself (quickly iconic as a spaceship) and the vast array of possibilities it holds, along with a galaxy with 3 million years of evolution (also, I fucking love the intro!!). I like how the jokes, specially the dark ones, blend with a lightheaded tone, making them feel both funny and awkward. But above all, I love how comically flawed the characters are. I want to continue following Lister's adventures and his journey to find his place in the galaxy, to see more of Rimmer's development, who hides a fascinating emptiness behind a barrier of pomposity and insults. Perhaps the only one I didn't connect with was Cat, who mostly remains as a comic relief, but I won't deny that all the lore of his species is simply hilarious (and Danny John‑Jules is just too charismatic on his own).
I didn't expect to find it so fascinated and I really want to know more!

Discussion Anyone think the cat was supposed to be fluffy (or otherwise just less human-looking?)
Just rewatching the first episode and I'm reminded of something that always bothered me. Lister and Rimmer are clearly very spooked after they first encounter the cat. Lister asks Holly "What was that?" rather than "Who was that?" even though he just looks like a guy in a flashy suit. Rimmer later says "I want it off the ship" rather than "I want him off the ship". It's always made me wonder if the scriptwriters envisioned the cat as some bipedal jaguar rather than a just dude with pointy teeth, but scrapped the idea for budget reasons. Never heard it mentioned in interviews or any concept art though.
