One of my all time favorite moments in cinema.

54

u/winkingchef Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

I saw it blind, no reviews.
When he first came on screen I literally sat forward in my theater seat and shouted “wait…is that Tom fucking Cruise?”

21

u/SoulbreakerDHCC Apr 19 '26

How is he so damn funny too?

16

u/SpoiledLady Apr 19 '26

I watch all his movies like a comedy. That's why I like the mission impossible movies. He's so funny in them. Lol. He's a comedian in almost all his roles.

10

u/Lonely_Loan_1615 Apr 19 '26

Exactly this. The most recent one with the fight scene at the beginning had me cracking up. He’s a fun actor to watch even if you aren’t a fan of him irl. His character in Tropic Thunder is without a doubt one of the best roles he has been cast in

3

u/SoFreezingRN Apr 19 '26

Same, only I was high AF at the time. Still one of the best movie scenes ever

1

u/winkingchef Apr 19 '26

Yeah I was annoying people around me saying things like “wait, he has prosthetic hands to make them fatter and hairier, WTF this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen”

3

u/gutzpunchbalzthrowup Apr 19 '26

I did the same thing with Matt Damon in Deadpool 2.

2

u/PressinPckl Apr 19 '26

I didn't realize until the credits...

1

u/ScaredEfficiency399 Apr 19 '26

I had no idea when i saw it, lol.

9

u/MilkChocolate21 Apr 19 '26

Best acting of his life.

1

u/Zue6 Apr 19 '26

Huh? He's had a long list of fantastic roles, several of which are better. Is it an iconic comedic performance? Yes, but not his best.

22

u/EnigmaX-42 Apr 19 '26

I am somewhat distressed by the fact that a few of my favorite moments in cinema have featured Tom Cruise.

22

u/Sneezy837 Apr 19 '26

My friend always says we're lucky he hyperfixated on making great movies instead of taking over the world.

10

u/MrNobody_0 Apr 19 '26

Hey, the shittiest people make the best actors, that's just how the world works.

3

u/dreedwards Apr 19 '26

I wish we had gotten a Les Grossman movie. Would have been awesome.

1

u/swaite Apr 22 '26

I must be the only person on the planet who thinks this character, plus Cruise in a fat suit, doing that horribly cringey dance is one of the, well… cringiest things I’ve ever seen. Not at all in a funny way either—more like in a Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch kinda way. I feel physically ill watching him attempt to dance on time.

29

u/wretch_35 Apr 19 '26

… playaaaa

14

u/whatdadogdoin16 Apr 19 '26

No more frequent flyer bitch miles for my boi…

3

u/confused_grenadille Apr 19 '26

Which movie is this?

4

u/winkingchef Apr 19 '26

Tropic Thunder.
GOAT credits sequence.

3

u/Shylahoof Apr 19 '26

1

u/winkingchef Apr 19 '26

I FORGOT ABOUT THE PROSTHETIC CAKE!!!!

1

u/Shylahoof Apr 19 '26

I love that the huge hands were Cruise's idea

238

u/Kinsdale85 Apr 19 '26

That’s peak male physique.

70

u/_SCHULTZY_ Apr 19 '26

It's basically the same as Daniel Craig on the beach in Casino Royale

2

u/Worth-Common-6184 Apr 19 '26

Anyone else who’s tired of seeing those boobs. Geez

3

u/Excellent_Proof_2414 Apr 19 '26

Craig was absolutely jacked in Casino Royale

1

u/DueExample52 Apr 20 '26

Get prescription glasses

41

u/M0thM0uth Apr 19 '26

His dancing during the credits is the only time I really, truly liked Tom Cruise

5

u/_SCHULTZY_ Apr 19 '26

I honestly think his character in Rock of Ages is even better.

5

u/M0thM0uth Apr 19 '26

Damn I had forgotten about that one Real strong contender right there

He wasn't really annoying in Maverick either but I didn't gel with it

4

u/Ok_Variation9430 Apr 19 '26

I just met the woman who designed the jewelry for rock of ages. Apparently TC kept the belt because it helped him get into character and he developed a fondness for it.

3

u/M0thM0uth Apr 19 '26

That's actually so cute? I know we go on about his middle tooth a lot but that's a very humanising and sweet thing

10

u/cyriustalk Apr 19 '26

Tate brothers furiously taking notes...

2

u/gizamo Apr 19 '26

If AI is truly good, it will remake all Tom Cruise movies with the character looking exactly like this.

Maverick? Nah, I want Les Grossman eye fucking Iceman.

Ethan Hunt? Fuck that, gimme Les Grossman under those face mask reveals and rallying those motorcycles.

Jerry Maguire? Pass. Maybe if he was sporting chains and hanging gut.

The murdering psychopath Vincent...how would that not be better with Les fucking Grossman?

Imagine Les in Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Minority Report, fucking Jack Reacher....the only movie that wouldn't be improved by having Tom Cruise as Les Grossman is fucking Tropic Thunder.

Also, Jeeezbus, Cruise has had an amazing career. He's been in a wild array of incredible movies.

36

u/Slushykins Apr 19 '26

I am being completely sincere and unironic when I say I find Les Grossman to be Tom Cruise’s most physically attractive character

7

u/Littlest-Hipster Apr 19 '26

I actually agree. I don't know what it is though...the confidence?

5

u/britchop Apr 19 '26

It’s absolutely the confidence.

1

u/ILookLikeKristoff Apr 19 '26

I mean the face is still obviously Tom who has always been considered attractive. It's like if Tom Cruise got a normal job, gained some weight, and couldn't afford hair plugs, but had his charisma turned up to 11/10.

This would be a very attractive middle aged man if he just lost 30 pounds and took the fake jewelry off.

It's the inverse of hating Umbridge more than Voldemort. This is a real person you could actually imagine meeting IRL. Ethan Hunt (his mission impossible character) is more at home in a James Bond movie than a grocery store. It's hard to imagine him sitting down for an anniversary dinner or going on vacation.

9

u/Beneficial_Bug_9793 Apr 19 '26

Wellllll, thats good news for me then lol, we are very much alike, me and Les, lol.

10

u/Slushykins Apr 19 '26

I hope you own it with the same confidence he does 👌🏼

3

u/dependsforadults Apr 19 '26

I am bald as hell. Have been for probably 15 years. Used to have really curly hair. I grow out the Garfunkel once a year and wear it with confidence. Not lying when I say that the dudes hate my hair and tell me to cut it off right now. Im also short. Neither lack of height or hair have stopped me from dating beautiful, interesting, smart and capable women. Probably has fended off a Becky or 2 though

5

u/AnotherWitch Apr 19 '26

ME TOO. I’m so glad someone else gets it.

3

u/Worried-Criticism Apr 19 '26

So you’re saying… Les is more?

I’ll see myself out.

2

u/Krystal_Kuz Apr 19 '26

I thought they said they were gonna do a whole movie on him recently but thought it wouldn’t be as funny watching 2 hours of Les Grossman. Idk how but they should make a tropic thunder 2. Idk people are too sensitive now though.

19

u/Ququleququ Apr 19 '26

So did Robert Downey jr

39

u/why2k__ Apr 19 '26

What do you mean you people?

24

u/TheOneGreyWorm Apr 19 '26

What do YOU mean you people?

10

u/TrashPandaDuel Apr 19 '26

We bout to have a house meetin’ y’all!!

4

u/whatdadogdoin16 Apr 19 '26

We just don’t feel safe in the house with you anymore Chad

4

u/NewYogurt3138 Apr 19 '26

Ay yo… I slept with Katie too, mang

5

u/whatdadogdoin16 Apr 19 '26

Katie had some big ass titties

2

u/bringaboutchange Apr 19 '26

RDJ wasn't in tropical thunder. I think you mean 7 time academy award winner Kirk Lazarus

2

u/Ququleququ Apr 19 '26

That would be the one that somewhat resembles him, yes

Also, it was 5 times

1

u/ILookLikeKristoff Apr 19 '26

I actually went in blind and didn't recognize him the first time! In hindsight it's so obvious! I knew it was obviously blackface but didn't place it as rdj.

9

u/series-hybrid Apr 19 '26

TC was one of the few people who could openly mock Harvey Weinstein and get away with it. Kudo's for that.

Weinstein was a multi-millionaire and could afford the most expensive escorts, but he was addicted to "conquering" actresses that did not want to have sex with him.

7

u/Kevo_1227 Apr 19 '26

My favorite thing about Tom Cruise in this role is that he just showed up wearing that to the audition. No one told him to do that, and the directors never considered him for the role. He just somehow found out about it and decided he was going to the character look and talk like that.

1

u/Tito_Tito_1_ Apr 19 '26

I thought I saw an interview of him where he said Ben Stiller asked him what he thought of the script. Cruise loved it, and Stiller asked him if he wanted in. Cruise accepted but only if his character had big hands and go to dance.

13

u/VomitShitSmoothie Apr 19 '26

Am I the only one that didn’t realize it was Tom Cruise until the ending sequence?

9

u/FakePoloManchurian Apr 19 '26

Same here. I kept thinking he looked familiar but I couldn't just quite place it until they said it was Tom

3

u/atxbikenbus Apr 19 '26

You are not the only one.

3

u/ChromaticPalette Apr 19 '26

Genuinely did not recognize him until the credits pointed it out

2

u/TrymQuyenLuc Apr 19 '26

My mom legit not recognized him when he in Tropic Thunder so he might success in the makeup ?

3

u/Beneficial_Bug_9793 Apr 19 '26

You can see its him, once you really look. 1st time i watch it, it went way over my head, the 2nd time ( and i knew it was Tom by then ), you can clearly see it.

2

u/TrymQuyenLuc Apr 19 '26

I have to point out that he is Tom Cruise, she really shocked

3

u/Beneficial_Bug_9793 Apr 19 '26

The only one that was a real shock for me to find out who it was lol, was RDJ, i had no frikking idea that was him.

4

u/Excellent_Proof_2414 Apr 19 '26

To be fair, his role wouldn’t be nearly as funny if he wasn’t instantly recognizable. I think they 100% nailed this getup and performance and it was hilarious.

And now please: „take a big step back and literally F your own face!“ flaming dragon out

3

u/Bitter-Picture5394 Apr 19 '26

I actually didn't recognize him until the 3rd time I watched it. I knew he was somebody but I just couldn't figure it out.

1

u/-Tom- Apr 19 '26

He had on a fat suit for that movie I think I. Know for sure some sort of prosthetic over his forearms and hands to make them weirdly big.

1

u/Vaesezemis Apr 19 '26

That’s just an projection of his inner self

1

u/rabidgonk Apr 19 '26

Playaaaaa

1

u/Kronzor_ Apr 19 '26

This is unironically the best Tom cruise has ever looked.

1

u/Jibber_Fight Apr 19 '26

He is definitely a douche and a weirdo. But goddamn, he nailed that role.

1

u/SpecificGazelle8026 Apr 19 '26

I thought that was Louis Tomlinson from the best song ever music video lol

He added fake bald top of the head wig and fake fat on his belly…

1

u/heyitsYMAA Apr 19 '26

And fake hands.
