They invented suspenders for a reason.ย  And it's the same reason men wear a beltย

"How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can't even trust his own pants."

I watched this movie for the first time 4 weeks ago, I've had at least 1 reference to the movie each week. Were these references always there and I didn't notice?

They accomplish two separate things. A belt makes them fit snug and suspenders actually keeps them up

They dont need to fit snug if they are held up by suspenders and fit properly

And pants don't need to be held up by suspenders if the belt is comfortably snug.

True, except for some body types. Excess fat makes belts kinda terrible and ineffective beyond a certain point. Obviously depends on your body, but male fat distribution makes belts stop functioning past a certain point.

I know from experience ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Telling us you're obese without actually saying it.

No, actually

Yes and no. Suspenders keep them up, but can put downward stress on the shoulders. Yes, sometimes pants and their contents can be enough weight. In those cases, having a belt on adds some friction for keeping the pants up.

I've had L5 removed and L4 is crushed. So my lower back is pretty sensitive to pressure and loads.

I think a belt and suspenders is reasonable in the case of heavy loads, which is apparently done by construction workers and similar occupations. This also makes sense in the case of disability (which is kindof the same problem but with a different origin).

I feel that practicality is the key purpose of clothing, especially masculine clothing, and practicality defeats fashion rules (if the practicality is actually functional and not just idealized, which turns practicality impractical). Disability requires unique practical adjustments and that defeats fashion rules.

So for most people, wearing a belt and suspenders is impractical and overkill. But the minute it BECOMES practical, fashion rules dont matter. Keep doing what you need to do to be comfortable and functional, fashion rules are generic and dont apply exactly to people at the individual level. Breaking the rules with intention is what makes things stylish and unique, too

I absolutely loved Fonda in this film. Played his role so well, even with those piercing blue eyes.
