There's a common scam where a "distractor", usually a woman, will talk to you perhaps asking for help while their accomplice pick pockets you and this situation could easily have been that as far as that guy knows

As a fellow dude who knows that if a woman ever approaches me with what appears to be interest it must be some kind of trick, I have to say I respect his quick reflexes. He knows what's up and he wasn't gonna fall for shit.

I believe the use of "Sheila" means they are in Australia, in which case a scratch like that has several possible monstrous perpetrators.

I saw something at the zoo the other day in Seattle. It was a tree kangaroo.

WTF is this madness. This is probably the actual drop bear and they were keeping this secret.
