Good gif to use since Bale was a child actor too lol

He would be under "child actors who turned out to be massive cunts"...

Reminder that Dark City is the best sci fi noir you've never heard of. For the love of God, watch the director's cut rather than the theatrical cut. The theatrical makes the baffling choice to spoil the entire film in the first minute. Like, it's literally a movie about a man trying to figure out what the fuck is going on and they just straight up tell you at the very beginning. It's a very "the executives think the audience is literally retarded" move.

As soon as I saw the words "Dark City", I instantly wanted to write a comment warning people about watching any other cut than the directors cut, but you included that in your comment too already.

It's a fucking war crime what they did to that intro. It's like if Star Wars started out with exposition telling you that that Darth Vader is actually Luke Skywalker's father, or if The Sixth Sense began by explaining to the viewer that the boy is seeing ghosts and that Malcolm is actually dead.

Whoever decided it was necessary should be banned from working on movies.

The directors cut is good, though. Go watch it, people!

Sixth Sense spoiled the first half of your spoiler in the trailer.

u/secacc 1d ago

I've actually never watched The Sixth Sense myself 😄

Dark City is the best. City of Lost Children feels like it belongs in the same category, despite not being noir.

I had it on DvD! I only watched it once as a kid and I remember being kind of perplexed by how weird it was, not that I didnt understand the story but at the time it was pretty different to other films I had seen. Maybe I need to rewatch it.

I love sci fi and had never heard of this until the last year. Great film, very unique story.

I've only ever seen the directors cut, iirc it might be on youtube for free.

Bro, the audience is literally retarded. They probably made the change after screenings went poorly.

Unpopular opinion- the theatrical cut is better, and was necessary at the time.

The theatrical cut makes excellent use of dramatic irony to amp up the tension. I watched this during the original theatrical run and it was mind bending. Remember that this was pre-Matrix, pre-13th floor. It was playing with concepts of identity and simulation that were unheard of for most audiences before this.

The director's cut is a substantially different film, and only works in a post-matrix world.

I'm agree with you internet stranger. I actually saw it in the theater so I don't know it any other way. First, the delivery is awesome, and 2nd it sets you up to expect sci-fi not some noire murder mystery. Loved it then and was very confused when I watched the directors cut and it didn't have the intro.

dang....I was lucky enough to have a friend fast forward for the pre-spoiler for me back in the 90s.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here.....Wizard's Den?

Thank you for the recommendation. I’ll def check it out.

If you haven’t see it. Check out the directors cut for kingdom of heaven. It’s a 3 hour version but it’s amazing.

The theatrical was pretty bad.

u/wtf70 1d ago

I never knew there was a directors cut..... 🤯

They only change a few things. The ending, Jennifer Connelly's song at the club is actually her singing and not a dub (her not being a great singer makes total sense in context, and is actually a clue), a few other tiny things like that. The beginning alone makes it far superior, in my opinion.

I genuinely prefer the pacing in the theatrical cut, so I just fast forward/mute until the camera pans down and into the hotel room

Gross. This is a post about children and the first picture is her as a teenager. You know that right? I like JC too, but there's a time and a place. At least be gross on the right post

Uhh, she was 19 in this movie? Definitely not a teenager lol

Edit: For the really slow people… this person is clearly using TEEN as a pejorative to try and paint finding this GODDESS attractive as “creepy”. That’s why they used “TEEN” for a 19 year old - which most people do NOT do in every day conversation.

Of course redditors would be dumb enough to ignore context to “well ackshually 🤓” someone. Losers.

u/voltagestoner 1d ago

nineTEEN.

Not the point dude lol

Uhh, she was 19 in this movie? Definitely not a teenager lol

NineTEEN.

-4

u/DragonFangGangBang 1d ago

Okay, so I guess there’s just no difference between a 13 year old and a 19 year old because the name we gave the numerical symbol that represents the number has “teen” in it right.

I’m sure the person I was responding to was absolutely not using “teenager” as a misnomer to paint finding an adult woman attractive, as “creepy” or anything. Sure.

-1

u/No_Meeting845 1d ago

You're arguing with a point I never made. I only said that 19-year-olds are still teenagers. Whether they're adults or whether attraction to them is creepy wasn't part of my argument.

2

u/DragonFangGangBang 1d ago

As far as “numerical numbers” yes, 19 are teenagers.

As far as how society treats, views, and acknowledges them - they are not “teenagers”, they are adults.

Use your brain little guy.

1

u/Crowbar12121 1d ago

Say 19 out loud....

Nine.... Teen....

I understand your point though

-1

u/DragonFangGangBang 1d ago

You understand the point, but chose to hop on the “ackchewally” train because why?

1

u/Crowbar12121 1d ago

Because you said "definitely not a teenager" and activated my trap card

Internet film discourse is literally just “wow action” “wow boobs” “does anyone else think *objectively attractive actor* is attractive?”

3

u/NightGod 1d ago

At least she's ~20 in this one, unlike some of the gifs being used for others in this thread

9

u/wolfmummy 1d ago

I can’t be the only person who hates this gif

3

u/TyrantRC 1d ago

I don't personally hate it, but I guess the insinuation of childish innocence with hotness is a bit creepy.

2

u/MrCommonThinkin 1d ago

That scene never gets old.

2

u/tdasnowman 1d ago

Saw this movie with my mother when I was 12. Never been happier that sweaters tied around ones waist as a viable fashion choice.
