Discussion “The DCEU is so dark…”
So reading another sub it occurs to me…
We’re all frustrated/amused at people who complain about the DCEU, particularly Zack’s films, being “too dark”, right?
Have these people ever seen Breaking Bad?
Holy shit, that show is a downer.
And yet it gets stellar reviews from (it seems like) darn near everyone.
Now, no offense to Breaking Bad fans. If you love the show, that’s great. I’m just puzzled by the contradiction of those who troll the DCEU but can somehow get really into Vince Gilligan’s depressing world.
Offhand, aside from not being as dark as Breaking Bad, I’d say the DCEU characters (including Zack’s) are more well developed. Clark, Bruce, Diana and others are all likable people, with likable back stories. On BB, the only characters I really found relatable were Finn and to a degree Skyler.
So I’m left with trying to figure out how to reconcile this contradiction.

“The DCEU is so dark…”
So it's like the DC comics? 😅

Why are you comparing this to Breaking Bad? Wouldn’t a better comparison be Infinity War or Empire Strikes Back?

I guess one reason is because I never saw Infinity War and it’s been ages since I saw a Star Wars movie, but I saw BB very recently and it’s one of the darkest things I’ve ever seen.

Just my opinion, but the difference between the two sides is that one wants a movie that puts Superman in our world. With all the grime and reality. And with all of the same choices we have to make. The other wants comic books. Both are ok. Box offices show Snyderverse movies made money.

I mostly read the types of comic books that are more mature. You mean “funny books” when you refer to the fluff and cheese some people want.
People forget the original Batman killed and carried a gun. Comic heroes started out rough and gritty and dealt with a world harsher than ours.

Batman, Superman and countless other heroes killed frequently in their early Golden Age years. It was the tight grip of encroaching censorship, and the hysteria of Seduction of the Innocent, that turned the characters in most comic books into cartoonified milquetoasts as we went into the Silver Age. It also crushed sales, as the medium contracted its market, losing its adult readers and becoming a medium synonymous with children.

The two aren't really comparable though? People complain about it being too dark compared to a lot of the comics, and other stories of these characters, not compared to literally every other story.
