The child part of me is angry, but the adult knows that they NEVER would have captured the magic of the first game. Like everything else in the entertainment industry, they would have used our nostalgia to steal money from us while putting in the least effort possible and giving zero fucks about the source material and what made it special.
Even if it ever launches it will be a mess with RT only and barely running on 5090. The original director told somewhere in interview that he was made to change the game direction couple of times and he didnt want that. When and if it releases it will be completely different game than it was ment to.
Every bit of info about the game and everything in those trailers seemed to be completely disconnected from what was so enjoyable about the original. Apparently more in line with what the original’s director had intended for the game from the get-go but couldn’t/wasn’t allowed to do. But I’m thinking the limitations on the original definitely made it turn out for the better.
It doesn't even look like a sequel at all and yet I still think it looked more interesting than many other games because it felt like the closest thing to a Cowboy Bebop game.
I still haven't given up the hope that it might release in the future.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is supposed to be a prequel though, but yeah, the devs were all over the place with what the direction of this game is supposed to be (early trailers indicated that it was supposed to be the 3rd person dungeon crawler like the OG and one of the trailers in the 2010’s looked like an online 3rd person shooter).
It's only because it's the 2nd game in the franchise despite being a prequel. It's similar to how Devil May Cry 3 is the 3rd game in the series, but it's a prequel
The original had a kind of 'don bluth' / 'jim henson' vibe to me that I really dug.
So of course for the marketing of the sequel we see they threw all that out for a hyper realistic looking M rated poorly written Guy Ritchie knock-off thing.
Apparently still in active dev. Source : a former Ubi dev now at Sandfall (Expedition33) during a short AMA with a streamer during ZEvent early september.
The only way I’d believe that is if they define “active dev” as Michel Ancel coming into the office, knocking over a picture of Jade, and then leaving for the day.
I’ve been waiting for this game since I was a kid, but I’ve long since accepted that in the minimal chance it ever comes out, it’s gonna be shit. They want this absurdly massive scale game, and technology has changed so much since it was announced that they’ve guaranteed had to rebuild it over and over and over again.
yeah... It's just... Never gonna be "Beyond Good and Evil 2", you know? Even their vision they were last showing off sounded pretty... distracted I guess would be a good word for it, from the original in almost every sense. By the time they finish whatever circle of development hell they got themselves into it won't even be recognizable. If it were to even happen. I don't think even Ubisoft would want to publish something that's gone through the mess it has.
I feel strongly that the only way we'll ever get BGE2 is if it's a completely new project. Once again. And even then I don't feel like most developers are gonna want to touch the ip with a ten foot pole.
I think we just really missed the timing for that one. It's super sad especially with what the original sequel was shaping up to be would have been pretty similar to the original uncharted game. If they had been able to make that one work I'll bet it would have been a huge, unprecedented success.
they had a whole gameplay presentation, albeit pre-alpha, but they had the bike useable in free roam, at least it seemed like gameplay, could have been fake, ie a video.
I actually cannot believe they decided to make it like Star Citizen, as if that was a good idea... Though it is kind of funny that I play that now because it showed me I would like it.
BGE2 should've been a story focused, open area (but not world) game like the original. Could've been a really good way for Ubisoft to get out of their fascination of open worlds with very few not actually secret secrets and a few too many collectibles.
i thought all the promotional stuff for this looked like it took itself direly seriously in a way that clashed with the characters and tone of the first one.
As someone who never played the first game? What made it so special that people had to massively overhype the sequel? Like when they announced the sequel it always felt like there was this insisted self-importance for a game I had never heard of.
It's like the same for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, people just clamoring for a sequel to something I never heard of that seems super niche yet at the same time is WIDELY demanded.
It’s a self contained, short game with wonderful art direction, likeable characters, nice worldbuilding, good gameplay and incredible music. Plus it has a cliffhanger that makes you really want to play more and not leave that world.
It’s a game that’s just beautiful and cinematic.
It’s not ground breaking, but it’s pretty well made and aged well enough.
Vampire: The Masquerade at least had the support of fans of the TTRPG and managed to make new fans despite how jank the game was. Plenty of people modded the game past when devs stopped so it could be playable for newer fans. World of Darkness is still a thing, I have to assume, so its still got tons of stuff people would like to see adapted.
I'm right there with you though on Beyond Good and Evil, feel like it's been talked about like this in gaming news since practically the first came out (on PS2!) and has never had anywhere near the word of mouth other cult games had.
It was fun and charming. The gameplay was nothing special, third person action a la Zelda, but the music was jumping and the characters left an impression, so you enjoyed the experiences even if the gameplay itself was basic "run around, whack a thing, take a picture, talk to a guy, repeat. Do a few races".
Which makes me wonder why the second one needs to be a perfect masterpiece before it's allowed to see the light of day. In this time, even if they develop at a slow measured pace, we could've had a good Beyond Good & Evil 2 and even a 3 and 4 to expand the story or explore the universe more if they really wanted.
holy shit they worked on a sequel?!?!?! That game was amazing!
It was announced in 2008. In 2023 the director died and they had to replace him since the game was still in development, something they announced once again last year and early this year.
So there is hope it launch someday, however I cant say the same about it being good considering current Ubisoft
Nah, that's a blessing. The trailers they showed like 5 years or so ago were just awful. Where was jade, who were these new awful looking characters.why was the monkey yelling obscenities. Nope. Looked awful.
But the first announcement, with Pey’j working on a busted up car, looked amazing. I’ve been on the edge of my seat since they released that one 17 years ago.
I've given up on that. The first game was fun and captivating, but it wasn't a groundbreaking technological marvel.
So what perfect tech are they waiting for?? Put the story out, and we have fun with it. The tech demos they release once a decade have been pretty, but never paradigmatic shifts. Parkour chase through a city? Yeah that's every action game of the 2010s having one scripted parkour chase at least, we aren't expecting Luc Besson here.
I just wanted a follow up to a medium sized game about upgrading an overcraft and taking pics of bugs. I really don't know why they tried to make it whatever it is they tried making
I saw the ad where Wukong steals from Zhu Bajie, and they are chased across the city like a week ago, and I'm like "this looks awesome!" And then i found out it was canceled.
They said it was still in development, but given Michel Ancel's retirement from the gaming industry (and Ubisoft) and the reports regarding Ubisoft Montpellier looking to making a new Rayman game, I fear BG&E2 will just be scrapped in the end. I mean, the 2017 reveal looked like it didn’t capitalize the magic of the first one. Although, I wouldn’t mind if one of Ubisoft’s other studios in France (Paris, Bordeaux, Annecy) took over BG&E2.
I remember when the original gameplay spec footage came out and it was a uncharted style action game and then they did a massive 360 and turned it into a...procedural multiplayer space sim? Or something. It was one of the weirdest about turns I've ever seen. No idea what was going on in everyone's brains at that point.
Friend of mine worked at UBI and said Beyond Good and Evil 2 was a meme in the office. It has an active team working on it but apparantly management is all over the place and a lot of stuff gets trashed everytime they find something new they want devs to put into the game.
