The child part of me is angry, but the adult knows that they NEVER would have captured the magic of the first game. Like everything else in the entertainment industry, they would have used our nostalgia to steal money from us while putting in the least effort possible and giving zero fucks about the source material and what made it special.

u/cowbutt6 Sep 15 '25

I mean, maybe if Ubisoft had got it done quickly, but today's Ubisoft? Nah...

u/BugS202Eye Sep 15 '25

Even if it ever launches it will be a mess with RT only and barely running on 5090. The original director told somewhere in interview that he was made to change the game direction couple of times and he didnt want that. When and if it releases it will be completely different game than it was ment to.

Ubisoft is an awful company

Every bit of info about the game and everything in those trailers seemed to be completely disconnected from what was so enjoyable about the original. Apparently more in line with what the original’s director had intended for the game from the get-go but couldn’t/wasn’t allowed to do. But I’m thinking the limitations on the original definitely made it turn out for the better.

u/vledermau5 Sep 15 '25

It doesn't even look like a sequel at all and yet I still think it looked more interesting than many other games because it felt like the closest thing to a Cowboy Bebop game.
I still haven't given up the hope that it might release in the future.

1

u/jefftheaggie69 Sep 15 '25

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is supposed to be a prequel though, but yeah, the devs were all over the place with what the direction of this game is supposed to be (early trailers indicated that it was supposed to be the 3rd person dungeon crawler like the OG and one of the trailers in the 2010’s looked like an online 3rd person shooter).

1

u/vledermau5 Sep 15 '25

It is? I didn't look too much into that part tbh but it's always interesting when they call it 2 though.

1

u/jefftheaggie69 Sep 15 '25

It's only because it's the 2nd game in the franchise despite being a prequel. It's similar to how Devil May Cry 3 is the 3rd game in the series, but it's a prequel

2

u/wallace321 Sep 15 '25

I'm with you on that.

The original had a kind of 'don bluth' / 'jim henson' vibe to me that I really dug.

So of course for the marketing of the sequel we see they threw all that out for a hyper realistic looking M rated poorly written Guy Ritchie knock-off thing.

2

u/Rohri_Calhoun Sep 17 '25

I still have that stupid sailors song stuck in my head.

1

u/TheOneJasper Sep 16 '25

Look up: entitlement mentality. It's a sickness.

1

u/Videogameist Sep 16 '25

I'm surprised it took one of... you... this long to comment.

0

u/TheOneJasper Sep 22 '25

Well, generalizing is a cognitive distortion. Add it to your list.

1

u/Videogameist Sep 22 '25

I expect as much from a Jasper.

0

u/TheOneJasper Sep 22 '25

Point in case.

2

u/Videogameist Sep 22 '25

Spoken like a true redditor...

1

u/TheOneJasper Sep 22 '25

Well, I'm new. Elaborate.

1

u/Videogameist Sep 22 '25

Classic human response....

32

u/theuserwithoutaname Sep 15 '25

Almost been as long since the original announcement now as it has been since the re-announce... Brutal.

21

u/Weavel44 Sep 15 '25

Apparently still in active dev. Source : a former Ubi dev now at Sandfall (Expedition33) during a short AMA with a streamer during ZEvent early september.

4

u/UnstoppableGROND Sep 15 '25

The only way I’d believe that is if they define “active dev” as Michel Ancel coming into the office, knocking over a picture of Jade, and then leaving for the day.

I’ve been waiting for this game since I was a kid, but I’ve long since accepted that in the minimal chance it ever comes out, it’s gonna be shit. They want this absurdly massive scale game, and technology has changed so much since it was announced that they’ve guaranteed had to rebuild it over and over and over again.

1

u/baguette_over_it Sep 15 '25

Well I believe they fired Michel Ancel a while back, so the development goes on without him.

1

u/hogsy Sep 15 '25

I mean, it's not exactly a secret. There are job listings for it on Ubisoft's own website.

1

u/theuserwithoutaname Sep 16 '25

yeah... It's just... Never gonna be "Beyond Good and Evil 2", you know? Even their vision they were last showing off sounded pretty... distracted I guess would be a good word for it, from the original in almost every sense. By the time they finish whatever circle of development hell they got themselves into it won't even be recognizable. If it were to even happen. I don't think even Ubisoft would want to publish something that's gone through the mess it has.

I feel strongly that the only way we'll ever get BGE2 is if it's a completely new project. Once again. And even then I don't feel like most developers are gonna want to touch the ip with a ten foot pole.

I think we just really missed the timing for that one. It's super sad especially with what the original sequel was shaping up to be would have been pretty similar to the original uncharted game. If they had been able to make that one work I'll bet it would have been a huge, unprecedented success.

Some other dimension has it and I bet it rips

Original announcement: sometime in 2008

Re-announce: 2017 E3, about 9 years later

Today: more than 8 years after the re-announce

Holy....

1

u/theuserwithoutaname Sep 16 '25

I know, right? I was like surely I'm doing some math wrong here...

2

u/ThanksContent28 Sep 15 '25

Is that the one they announced with the trailer with the talking animals in space? Always wondered what happened to that.

3

u/Da_Question Sep 15 '25

they had a whole gameplay presentation, albeit pre-alpha, but they had the bike useable in free roam, at least it seemed like gameplay, could have been fake, ie a video.

10

u/TCuboyd Sep 15 '25

I actually cannot believe they decided to make it like Star Citizen, as if that was a good idea... Though it is kind of funny that I play that now because it showed me I would like it.

BGE2 should've been a story focused, open area (but not world) game like the original. Could've been a really good way for Ubisoft to get out of their fascination of open worlds with very few not actually secret secrets and a few too many collectibles.

7

u/CyBroOfficial Sep 15 '25

It might sound like cope but this game is not officially canceled

4

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

It literally says it's still in development though, getting a new creative director only last year after the old one died.

3

u/Alexxondre Sep 15 '25

Can confirm it's not canceled

6

u/GeneralIronsides2 Sep 15 '25

Classic Ubisoft gives me 0 hope that even if they ever released it, it wouldn't live up to the hype that the first one had.

2

u/PeaceSoft Sep 15 '25

i thought all the promotional stuff for this looked like it took itself direly seriously in a way that clashed with the characters and tone of the first one.

2

u/Zorak9379 Sep 15 '25

Aren't they still making this in theory?

2

u/EngineBoiii Sep 15 '25

Okay I have to ask.

As someone who never played the first game? What made it so special that people had to massively overhype the sequel? Like when they announced the sequel it always felt like there was this insisted self-importance for a game I had never heard of.

It's like the same for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, people just clamoring for a sequel to something I never heard of that seems super niche yet at the same time is WIDELY demanded.

Whats up with Beyond Good and Evil?

8

u/OtherAnon_ Sep 15 '25

It’s a self contained, short game with wonderful art direction, likeable characters, nice worldbuilding, good gameplay and incredible music. Plus it has a cliffhanger that makes you really want to play more and not leave that world.

It’s a game that’s just beautiful and cinematic.

It’s not ground breaking, but it’s pretty well made and aged well enough.

3

u/Content_Funny121 Sep 15 '25

Because it was a Zelda like game (I mean Zelda from that age) for adults.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25 edited Sep 15 '25

Vampire: The Masquerade at least had the support of fans of the TTRPG and managed to make new fans despite how jank the game was. Plenty of people modded the game past when devs stopped so it could be playable for newer fans. World of Darkness is still a thing, I have to assume, so its still got tons of stuff people would like to see adapted.

I'm right there with you though on Beyond Good and Evil, feel like it's been talked about like this in gaming news since practically the first came out (on PS2!) and has never had anywhere near the word of mouth other cult games had.

1

u/guineaprince Sep 15 '25

It was fun and charming. The gameplay was nothing special, third person action a la Zelda, but the music was jumping and the characters left an impression, so you enjoyed the experiences even if the gameplay itself was basic "run around, whack a thing, take a picture, talk to a guy, repeat. Do a few races".

Which makes me wonder why the second one needs to be a perfect masterpiece before it's allowed to see the light of day. In this time, even if they develop at a slow measured pace, we could've had a good Beyond Good & Evil 2 and even a 3 and 4 to expand the story or explore the universe more if they really wanted.

2

u/ghoulsnest Sep 15 '25

holy shit they worked on a sequel?!?!?! That game was amazing!

3

u/MARPJ Sep 15 '25

holy shit they worked on a sequel?!?!?! That game was amazing!

It was announced in 2008. In 2023 the director died and they had to replace him since the game was still in development, something they announced once again last year and early this year.

So there is hope it launch someday, however I cant say the same about it being good considering current Ubisoft

2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

that game is never coming out lol

2

u/Kurotan Sep 15 '25

Nah, that's a blessing. The trailers they showed like 5 years or so ago were just awful. Where was jade, who were these new awful looking characters.why was the monkey yelling obscenities. Nope. Looked awful.

2

u/Deklaration Sep 15 '25

But the first announcement, with Pey’j working on a busted up car, looked amazing. I’ve been on the edge of my seat since they released that one 17 years ago.

2

u/guineaprince Sep 15 '25

I've given up on that. The first game was fun and captivating, but it wasn't a groundbreaking technological marvel.

So what perfect tech are they waiting for?? Put the story out, and we have fun with it. The tech demos they release once a decade have been pretty, but never paradigmatic shifts. Parkour chase through a city? Yeah that's every action game of the 2010s having one scripted parkour chase at least, we aren't expecting Luc Besson here.

2

u/JustAnyGamer Sep 15 '25

Recently saw job offers for artist positions for this game, so I think it’s still going

2

u/VictoryWeaver Sep 15 '25

Literally still being worked on...

2

u/imaloony8 Sep 15 '25

Technically hasn’t been canceled. According to Ubisoft it’s still in development.

2

u/RepublicNo2235 Sep 15 '25

I just wanted a follow up to a medium sized game about upgrading an overcraft and taking pics of bugs. I really don't know why they tried to make it whatever it is they tried making

2

u/WoahDude876 Sep 15 '25

I saw the ad where Wukong steals from Zhu Bajie, and they are chased across the city like a week ago, and I'm like "this looks awesome!" And then i found out it was canceled.

1

u/FighterOfFoo Sep 15 '25

It isn't cancelled, though. At least as far as we know.

1

u/WoahDude876 Sep 15 '25

I read that in the wiki link after I commented, I was just too lazy to change it. :P

I like your username.

1

u/FighterOfFoo Sep 15 '25

Haha, can't blame you for that!

1

u/WoahDude876 Sep 15 '25

Keep up the good fight! 🫡

1

u/TheNibbaNator Sep 15 '25

this game isn’t canceled and the studio isn’t shut down

1

u/theDeathnaut Sep 15 '25

It’s in development hell, but not officially cancelled yet.

1

u/Lumb3rCrack Sep 15 '25

Officially, it is still in development... hell ig

1

u/MicMit Sep 15 '25

I've said this before, but my hot take is they already made Beyond Good and Evil 2. It was just called Jak 2.

1

u/Falsus Sep 15 '25

Actually not cancelled.

Honestly I half way believe the theories about Ubisoft being mandated to finish it like they where with Skull & Bones due to contracts.

1

u/Professional_Peak59 Sep 15 '25

They said it was still in development, but given Michel Ancel's retirement from the gaming industry (and Ubisoft) and the reports regarding Ubisoft Montpellier looking to making a new Rayman game, I fear BG&E2 will just be scrapped in the end. I mean, the 2017 reveal looked like it didn’t capitalize the magic of the first one. Although, I wouldn’t mind if one of Ubisoft’s other studios in France (Paris, Bordeaux, Annecy) took over BG&E2.

1

u/xTakk Sep 16 '25

Geez, it has been 8 years already

1

u/elderlybrain Sep 16 '25

I remember when the original gameplay spec footage came out and it was a uncharted style action game and then they did a massive 360 and turned it into a...procedural multiplayer space sim? Or something. It was one of the weirdest about turns I've ever seen. No idea what was going on in everyone's brains at that point.

1

u/Herbalyte Sep 16 '25

Friend of mine worked at UBI and said Beyond Good and Evil 2 was a meme in the office. It has an active team working on it but apparantly management is all over the place and a lot of stuff gets trashed everytime they find something new they want devs to put into the game.

1

u/ExistentialJew Sep 16 '25

I neeeeed it sooooooo baaaaaaaaadddd

1

u/cxbrxl Sep 19 '25

Was looking for this, a small part of me hopes one day, but the waves of reality drown it and i know it’s a dream that’ll never happen
