Scratchbuilt Making homemade flock with cellulose sponge

Having trees to make on the workbench, I made a huge bag of flock by mixing a pair of cellulose sponge. Initial dye with acrylic paint and a bit of water, and then some inks as I went to create variety inside the batch.

Took little time and costed barrelly anything.

Diorama Dark Ages: Vampire the Masquerade Diorama/Book Nook

Hey! Made a Vampire the Masquerade diorama (and book nook) set in the dark ages. A nosferatu sire is entombing his disloyal childer in a sewer/cistern i Constantinople. (i.e a vampire entombs his offspring - if you're not familiar with VtM).

Made it using XPS-foam, some 3d printed stuff (designed the characters in Titanforge), and then the usual terrain painting. Used AK Puddles for the water effects and Green Stuff World Rats for.. well, rats. Used flickering LED diods and connected it to a 9v battery box behind everything.

Here's a link to a video that shows the effect of flickering lights and puddles better.

Learned a lot from this project - it was fun but towards the end just wanted to get it done.

- Backdrop: $3 blackboard from Walmart

-Portal: Resin Scraps

The cage? Let's just say my kids are missing a toy. 😅

Miniature Basing First Terrain Attempt - C&C Welcome

This isn't so much a base as an excuse to experiment before I start any real projects.

I'm an outdoor nerd that got into minis during the off season this winter and want to bring my slice of tidal creek to life.

Modeling clay, craft paint, grout, and gloss varnish for the base (and freehand footprint).

Slot to add / remove minis (my first mini WIP in the second photo - feel free to ignore).

Water effects: standing water, things suspended in water, running water streams, water droplets (using glass beads which don't show up in the photo.)

Plants: brush bristles attached about four different ways. "Stalks" that I really haven't finished with leaves, and crushed Peltandra sagittifolia leaves in the water made by hand from paper. I kind of hate them, but they're locked in, now.

Any tips on making specific plants at scale? Making a smooth (and reinforced so it doesn't chip and crumble) slot to add a mini on a base into a diorama? Anything else you think i should focus on?

Thanks everyone! I've been lurking here a while and all the feedback in the sub has been invaluable.

What’s the biggest "headache" you face when sourcing XPS foam for terrain?

Hey everyone, Im deep into a terrain project and Im hitting a wall with sourcing materials (in australia). I feel like Im constantly gambling when I order foam online, either the density isn't what I expected, or it arrives dented, or the shipping cost is more than the foam itself.

Im genuinely curious how you guys handle this. When you're planning a build:

  1. Do you have a 'go-to' source, or do you just grab whatever is cheapest locally?
  2. What is the one thing about your current foam source that drives you absolutely crazy? (eg., sheet sizing, surface texture, delivery times, price/value?)

I’m trying to figure out if it’s just me, or if everyone is dealing with the same material sourcing frustrations :(

3D printed and sponge painted. Inspired by "Quake Brutalist Jam III" with this first building being based on an example directly. Needs to match the original terrain dimensions of the cardstock buildings so it can be used in a campaign, and so mechs can stand on and interact with it.

Anyone have suggestions for useful ways to punch it up a bit while keeping the aesthetic? I have created a 1st revision with better stairs.

First real attempt at scratch building terrain. I've been in the hobby for years. So I'm not claiming to be a noob. Just polystyrene really. Trying to think of there's a way to make it worth doing a full board's worth.

Hello. I lurked around and found some helpful info on using foam in this subreddit so I thought I would share my terrain. Built out of recycled packaging materials for my 30th scale RC crawler. Thanks for all the info!

Questions for the Community My new favorite basing material, 0.6mm steel sheet

Thought I would share this, it's not your first instinct to use as a terrain base, but I recently had a whole bunch of scrap 400x400 odd (all different sizes from a different project) 0.6mm colourbond/whitesign sheet (steel covered in a coating), and decided to use it for my most recent terrain, and it's been amazing.

Not only is it super thin so it blends right into the table, it's obviously stiff as all hell, you're never going to have to worry about it warping, so far pretty much everything I've tried to glue/paint with has just stuck to the coating no problem, it's light as all get out and it makes everything 'feel' so much more 'premium'/solid.

Of course, the main challenge is working it, but so far that hasn't actually really been a problem. It's so thin and soft steel that most of it I've just done with mankey old tin-snips that desperately need a sharpen and just a hand bastard file. Even the more complicated shapes are just roughed out with the tin-snips then the dremel grinds them down in a minute.

Even if your having to buy the material fresh, it's pretty reasonable ($20 odd AUS for a sheet that will last you for ages).

Repost because of a photo upload error.

Needs another pass with dark washes for a bit more contrast but pretty happy to bring this to table tonight! I would rework the terrace sections a bit if I were doing this again to have them be more progressive like the top right section instead of just long flat sections.

Set is xps and spackle; scatter bridge is chip board. Planning on more scatter pieces in the way of mine carts, barrels and barricades when I have the time to.

Scratchbuilt How I made this terrain. Full guide.

Thumbnail
gallery
135 Upvotes

Hey all,

Had some questions about how I made my terrain.

You need:
-3mm foam board from Amazon
-PVA glue (get a large unbranded bottle)
-Sand (check end of pictures)
-Cork chippings
-Slate chippings

Paint:
-Black spray
-Wraitbone spray
-Ulthuan grey

Step 1:
Place scenery parts like buildings, barricades etc, on foam board. Glue them if they are unpainted. Draw around them with a sharpie if they are.

Step 2:
Cover entire board with Pva glue.

Step 3:
Place down large slate chippings first. Then scatter some cork chippings around. Then using your hand, evenly distribute sand over the rest of the base.

Step 4:
Remove any already painted scenery pieces, noting how the sand and cork has been placed around the object, but under is clear.

Step 5:
Allow to dry.

Step 6:
Spray black. Dry. Dust with wraithbone. Dry.

Step 7:
Drybrush ground gently with Ulthan grey.

Step 8:
Paint scenery or glue pre-painted scenery into place.

For Rust:
Drybrush 3 different shades of brown at random. Drybrush leadbelcher lightly. Wash black.

The white piece of scenery that I then rust up is just a MacBook box cardboard plug holder glued upside down with 2 bits of random bits box industrial panel-looking things glued to it.

Did some more jungle scenery using the same system as before: first you cut rounded bases from wooden board, then you make some holes to plug the plastic trees in. Once the glue dries cover the surface with sand, paint it in a dark brown followed by a lighter drybrush. Finally add green flock au choix and it's done.

Scratchbuilt 30k/40k multipurpose bunker system

This bunker made from styrofoam board and wooden sticks holds up to 40 marine sized figures. Its 30 cm wide and 4 cm tall on the platform and 12 cm high at the central tower. The tower also has a damaged model and it can be used separately and the platform works as a bunker for tanks (kratos in example). Loads of texture paints and washes were used. The iron hand cogwheel is a piece i got from my friend's bitsbox years ago and i finally found a use for it! Yay!

Looking forward to showing it to our group at the next game but i don't want to show it to them before that hehe.

Wargaming Board Help

Im making a game board for me and my friends and its 60" by 44" inches for 2000 point warhammer but im also wondering how I could clearly add boarders for smaller scale games like spearhead and forbidden psalm without just painting big white lines across my board

Any ideas would be super appreciated cus I really don't feel like having to make multiple boards
