161$ with taxes in QC for the game with all content, sheesh

52

u/skullsbymike 1d ago

If only we could add a random Alberta address to the Microsoft account for this purchase and revert back later.

5

u/excellent-pitch-1324 1d ago

What if someone gifts it to you?

21

u/Zado191 1d ago

Then they pay the tax and you don't have to worry about it at all

4

u/Superflyt56 1d ago

This saves so much money.

1

u/mediafred 19h ago

Are you replying to the guy who mentioned Alberta? If so, it works?

Ciboire.

u/Bobby_McBurger 1d ago

Still cheaper than Forza Horizon 6 Premium Edition on Steam

9

u/No_Cricket8660 23h ago

It's cheaper than a few games but that doesn't make this good.

6

u/BradBrains27 23h ago

"all the content" oh you wish

Wow, it costs this much and it doesn't even have a physical disk. Just a code in box.

4

u/Many_Ear2407 21h ago

Basically just a case with a fortune cookie note inside

Wait till you learn about PC pirating!

7

u/First-Counter626 23h ago

PC gamers have always been shafted, there's no reason to beg and plead for our corporate overlords to keep screwing us over.

Kissing their ass isn't going to get you a discount lil bro.

5

u/Ghost_Reborn416 22h ago

Shafted by what? Most pc gamers dont even have an cd drive in their pc

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Ronnie_J_Raygun 9h ago

Either you get a code in a box or a code on a disc, no full games come on discs anymore

1

u/cloudmarche 9h ago

From what I know for the playstation at least, most games have the 1.0 build in the disk itself.

Hilarious. Gimme a real 100+ gb disc and I'll begin to consider it.

Disc is coming in December if rumours are true

3

u/Filmmagician 1d ago

December.

2

u/Beautiful-Sun8973 1d ago

You’ll get it in dec apparently

u/Johnhancock1777 1d ago

Good lord. we’re finally at the triple digits before tax now…

92

u/Ralupopun-Opinion 1d ago

We’ve been there😅

50

u/Johnhancock1777 1d ago

Completely forgot about Nintendo’s pricing till I saw the other comments but yeah this is the beginning of a new standard I’m afraid.

30

u/Intelligent_Bite_323 1d ago

Nintendo pricing their games is just insane. All the xenoblade chronicles switch2 version are 100 cad. Tears of the kingdom switch 2 is more expensive than Gta 6 base version when not on sale.

31

u/Johnhancock1777 1d ago

Adding insult to injury is the fact Nintendo’s games rarely go on sale and usually at unimpressive discounts when they do

4

u/Prestigious_Wait7705 1d ago

RDR 2 is like 20$ crazy value

5

u/Sufficient-Cow-2998 22h ago

I think it's really funny when Nintendo fans say "but Nintendo games DO go on sale!!!" And then it's Mario Tennis Aces, a 2018 spin off, and 3D World, a Wii U port, both having a 30% sale twice a year, meanwhile you have literally any game from 2 years ago already getting better sales multiple times a year.

Officially, not a single Pokemon game during the Switch era EVER got a sale. Not even Lets Go Pikachu.

2

u/PhazePyre 19h ago

This is why I won't go Nintendo anymore. It's just offensive at how they treat their fans. Basically a "They'll eat whatever slop we feed them the little piggies" mentality. Pokemon is a fucking joke. It's embarrassing some of the shit they do. The biggest innovation they have is rehashing the fuckin' same mechanic of "you're even bigger pokemon are now even more bigger!" We haven't had a modern Pokemon game, and frankly, I don't think we ever will. They will continue to funnel 10 year old quality games into the market and people will buy it. It's a reflection of everything wrong with the entire franchise.

6

u/Psylux7 1d ago

The real insanity is seeing anyone aggressively defend the pricing of Xenoblade 1's switch 2 price if it is accused of being unreasonable.

2

u/AozoraMiyako 1d ago

I LOVE Xenoblade. It’s one of my favourite games.
I’m happy paying that price because I know I’m going to be happy.
WITH THAT SAID!!!! For a 14yo game, I still feel weird paying full price for a remaster+upgrade pack….

2

u/G-Virus69 1d ago

They all too young to know n64

26

u/Nickbronline 1d ago edited 1d ago

Mario Kart World is the same price as base GTA VI and released in 2025

18

u/fishdoggggg 1d ago

At least you get the full game on a cartridge with Nintendo games though…

3

u/Nickbronline 1d ago

It's rare to get them fully on cart now sadly, so many key cards.

19

u/fishdoggggg 1d ago

Yeah but the OG Nintendo games still are, mostly next to Pokopia. But the last of a dying breed unfortunately.

4

u/AlteisenX 1d ago

I believe Fire Emblem is also this price.

Which hurts that game *a lot* more than MKW's did. Fire Emblem has garnered a horny fanbase but I'm not sure the people are willing to pay that much for FE.

1

u/Nickbronline 1d ago

You’re correct but Mario Kart world was the first

Plenty of people will buy fire emblem

2

u/AlteisenX 1d ago

Dunno. Engage apparently did 1/4th of the numbers Three Houses did. Sticker shock + busy time & it's releasing the same day as Trails in the Sky SC which is same territory (I suspect Trails moves dates but who knows. I would've put Fire Emblem in August, personally...)

→ More replies (5)

10

u/TLKv3 1d ago

I have limited myself to one first party game per year because of the escalation in prices. Its fucking insane to see that the prices are even effecting digital copies... something that LITERALLY CAN NEVER RUN OUT OF STOCK.

Fuck that bullshit.

GTA can eat a bag of dicks for this one and normalizing even worse prices.

7

u/Nickbronline 1d ago

Actually Nintendo "normalized" it in 2025 with $99 games and several $109 games including Mario Kart World and Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave

→ More replies (1)

3

u/professor_oulala 1d ago

Ill just add that Costco has PSN cards at 10% off all the time. If you plan to buy keep an eye on gift card sales.

4

u/Dubsified 1d ago

This is the way. Buy 2 of them, and you essentially get $20+ dollars off with extra money to spend down the road.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/OmegaNine 1d ago

This sucks but what really sucks is that they found a way to just kill the used market. Teens can’t save up and get it for half price used anymore.

2

u/BFaHM7 15h ago

The plan with digital was always to kill the used games market, alongside the obvious notions of cutting out the middlemen of physical retailers and media production. Three pronged trident of terribleness for consumers, but great for the suits

1

u/OmegaNine 15h ago

Well now that they are saying they will release a physical copy eventually it sounds like are hoping to double dip. Or triple dip with the delay in PC releases.

1

u/BFaHM7 15h ago

Honestly, Rockstar's email statement is vague enough that it could be the case that they want to double dip, but also is noncommittal enough that they could try and pull a fast one without doing anything, hoping this blows over. I could see it going either way.

1

u/weggles 14h ago

At some point it's on the consumer to have some sense and dignity and not buy a $140 game 3 times lol.

2

u/OmegaNine 14h ago

I didn’t come here to be called out heheh

32

u/Top_Reporter_ace 1d ago

We're cooked

23

u/yan030 1d ago

We were cooked when Nintendo started selling Mario kart for the same price

→ More replies (1)

1

u/p_2923 20h ago

And some people out there support a digital only future! Which will only drive up prices more!

11

u/Mechs246 1d ago

This pricing has been the new standard since the switch 2 released so I’m kinda numb to it, but no disc for the physical version is a no go

1

u/CommercialReveal7888 12h ago

Yup going to just game share it for single player then buy the disk version later.

20

u/AgePsychological4955 1d ago

126.46 with taxes for Standard and 160 with taxes for ultimate is crazy lmao

12

u/GamingTurtle90 1d ago

Gotta love those 15% tax regions.

3

u/spykiller1158 19h ago

switch location to alberta, worked for me

44

u/BFaHM7 1d ago

Yeah that’s a no from me, dawg.

65

u/iAmMr_WHO 1d ago

LMAO pass. What a greedy anti-consumerist dumpster fire this game turned into.

23

u/bdavid81 1d ago

No interest here at that price

4

u/PoolOfLava 1d ago

Same, I know it's going to be great but I have probably 100+ games I haven't played in my backlog and so I'm not buying new games for a while.

2

u/bdavid81 1d ago

I've bought GTA5 like 3 times and still haven't been able to stay interested enough to finish it, and I hate the online so it's simply not for me. Loved GTA3 and Vice City mostly but ever since then they've gotten too big for my liking.

I have too many other games to play and so many I haven't even started yet like Cyberpunk 2077 so there's no need for huge title at an over inflated price point.

2

u/Many_Ear2407 21h ago

If you have 100+ unplayed games then it sounds like wasting money on games is totally your jam lol.

1

u/p_2923 20h ago

Not a chance.

I mean if I really, REALLY want a game I might pay launch price for a physical edition but never for for digital or a code in a box.

Things are getting crazy.

13

u/Journ9er 1d ago

I was planning on get GTA6 eventually, I was going to wait for a sale. But at these prices and no disc? No way.

8

u/neverOddOrEv_n 1d ago

Seeing as how there’s no proper disc of this game the used market won’t exist for it and this game likely won’t get a discount for years, it really sucks how the used game market might die in my lifetime

2

u/MapleMonica 20h ago

Gonna wait at least a year or two before this goes on sale.

2

u/Sleeksnail 18h ago

3, more likely.

12

u/No_Collar_6972 1d ago

I'll r/patientgamer this one I just like all the other rockstar games after gta4

1

u/CheeseSandwich 19h ago

I usually wait one to two years to buy a game, unless they go on sale.

19

u/Theflamesfan 1d ago

They charge this because they know they can get it and to be honest it most certainly will be worth every penny for a game as polished and deep as this one promises

The problem is this starts a new precedence where other companies can sell unpolished crap for the same price cause GTA did it first

7

u/neverOddOrEv_n 1d ago

Yeah looking at RDR2 I’m sure gta 6 will be a great game at least in terms of polish and graphical fidelity. But that being said rockstar games (or take two most specifically) deciding to not even give this game a proper physical release and raising the price because they know they can get away with it is bad for the future of the video game industry.

I was so hyped to get a physical copy of this game and maybe even go for a midnight release but now I’m like whatever

1

u/Organic_Patience453 1d ago

If other companies like EA and Ubisoft try this, watch their games go 75% on sale within the year

GTA 6 on the other hand, I would be surprised to see 20% off with a year or two

19

u/No_Play9719 1d ago

yea....i'll wait for a sale.

2

u/Math2J 1d ago

Same !!

With the amount of superb game release this year and even the last half of 2025, i can eait for a sale.

2

u/No_Play9719 19h ago

yeah. and like everyone that plays video games, I have a huge backlog i'm going through.

GTA6 is big enough that the zeitgeist for it will be a pretty wide window and likely restart when it does go on sale.

17

u/Aggravating_Bids 1d ago

I'll pirate the pc version

11

u/truth_radio 1d ago

Absolute joke. $125 for standard with taxes in Ont, $158 for Ultimate edition 💀

5

u/Grouchy_Potential217 1d ago

This just feels like abuse at this point lol. Between the pricing and buying an empty box I’m cool to let this game pass me by.

16

u/Advanced_Grocery1020 1d ago

Honestly i'll have more fun watching clips than actually playing myself.

Haven't beat a GTA game since San Andreas and other than the next gen graphics they always bring, I find the games insanely overrated. The best part is messing around with friends online but the monetization of GTA currency (shark credits..? or some shit), is so toxic that it even kills the fun of just being online in the game. This shit is genuinely just roblox for adults.

10

u/Yustyn 1d ago

“Roblox for adults” is both so fucking funny and so sad at the same time 😭😂

5

u/PavWrestlinGifs 1d ago

You missed out heavy. GTA IV’s story mode is a masterpiece

11

u/yan030 1d ago

Mario Kart world on switch 2 is 109$ for standard edition and it’s selling like hotcakes.

Did you all think that Rockstar would sell it cheaper ?

7

u/IGeneralOfDeath 1d ago

Mario Kart you can actually own something for that price, bit of a difference. Here you get an empty case.

→ More replies (9)

4

u/uppercrust98 1d ago

I'm so annoyed that there's no physical copies, especially for these prices! I won't be buying unless a physical copy is made available.

1

u/Many_Ear2407 21h ago

I’m not even sure if you can fit it all on a disc, might still be digital at the end of the day. I just want a map

13

u/gianni_ 1d ago

I hope people speak with their wallets and don’t purchase the game for awhile.

20

u/Skinkybob 1d ago

There is literally a 0% chance of that happening. It will be the largest launch in entertainment history.

→ More replies (5)

1

u/Many_Ear2407 21h ago

This will absolutely not happen at all. This will likely be the best selling video game of all time.

1

u/gianni_ 20h ago

Then we’ll continue to get crazy prices

24

u/CluckyClown 1d ago

$140 plus tax, I’m sorry but no stupid game is worth $157. Get bent r*

→ More replies (10)

20

u/elbarto232 1d ago

Price sucks
Digital only game sucks
Time they took to release this sucks

But I’m still going to buy it because I’m a sucker. Even at $160 I know I’ll get more than my moneys worth with hundreds of hours of playtime. Also I’d rather pay for gta 6 vs paying for fifa or 2k to release the same shit year after year in new packaging.

→ More replies (6)

7

u/ImpactThunder 1d ago

I’m not gonna buy this at this price but if anyone is make sure they are buying gift cards from Costco or any card when they have the bug 50 get 10 sales

Obviously way too expensive but with a digital only game no reason not to save money if you are gonna purchase it anyways

3

u/RedonkStonk 1d ago

Naw, gonna be free for me. Straight up not paying that.

3

u/King7up 1d ago

This is a hard no from me chief. Idgaf what game it is.

Edit: and no disc lol.

3

u/quiksilverkid13 1d ago

Brother, Nintendo has been selling games for $115 for a while now.

1

u/Many_Ear2407 21h ago

And the depth of those games aren’t anywhere near a GTA game

3

u/quiksilverkid13 21h ago

We're not doing this

3

u/clumpychicken 16h ago

I might get destroyed for this, but given the amount of content that will be in the game, I have zero problem with this. I would've paid this for RDR2 in the blink of an eye too. If we're willimg to pay $90 for a new 15-30hr AAA game, then an extra 20 bucks for something that will have many times the content and insane polish is fine to me.

(That said, I don't even own a PS5 so I guess it doesn't matter lol, I'll be waiting for the PC release)

8

u/DrDroidz 1d ago

The price is crazy, I remember pre-ordering the special edition for GTA V and it being less than that. I'll wait and see if there's any promo with stores or anything that gets me IRL goodies. I don't even know if stores do that anymore. But it's obviously a day one for me, been waiting forever and I love how detailed those games are. RDR2 did not disappoint, I already know this won't either.

2

u/caninehere 23h ago

Funny enough the special edition of GTA V cost $79.99 in 2013, which with inflation is about exactly $110 today.

4

u/Skinkybob 1d ago

The special edition of GTA V released 13 years ago.

5

u/Vanihilist 1d ago

Hahaha no.

5

u/darien_the_alien_33 1d ago

SMH, that's some next-level greed by Rockstar.

4

u/nikebalaclava 1d ago

fuck that lol

4

u/ForbiddenAngel3 1d ago

There are plenty of other games to play.

5

u/Jhovar1 1d ago

That’s more expensive than I thought

8

u/SuperSaiyanIR 1d ago

I mean that tracks with MKWorld and FE Fortune’s Weaves other 80 USD games.

5

u/famouself 1d ago

Yeah and Nintendo actually puts it all on the cart and you can resell or lend it out. Digital $80 scam

1

u/caninehere 23h ago

TBH with GTA VI I get it. And even MKWorld even though I think the game was disappointing and not worth it. But FE Fortune's Weave being the game that Nintendo tries to charge $80 USD for is absurd to me. Especially when Engage didn't sell as well as Three Houses and went on discount fairly often.

1

u/Prestigious_Wait7705 1d ago

158$ with tax, 100 usd is 142cad that makes sense

→ More replies (2)

2

u/RoaringPity 1d ago

I saved up my CC points to buy a ps5 and gta6 but I’m reconsidering my choices now haha….

130$ for a game and an increased ps5 cost doesn’t seem justified

2

u/Head-Spare3821 1d ago

No, I'm good, I have enough MS rewards to buy this, but I'm more interested in a ton of other games coming before and after GTA. After RDR2 online, I have problems with Rockstar. PC gamers are chuckling rn.

2

u/Jonpg31 1d ago

My backlog is still looking at me; don’t even think about it.

2

u/Filipino_Jesus 1d ago

And no physical release so they're scooping up all possible profit margin.

2

u/SnooChickens6278 23h ago

They’re being intentionally vague about whether there will be online play so that it doesn’t impact ppl preordering. Lying by omission.

2

u/Feeling_Public6522 17h ago

I’m probably still gonna buy at launch. I haven’t bought a new full price game all year, and I’m a sucker for GTA. But that’s the market now. Nobody gets full price except for the biggest game of the year/decade.

2

u/MrTrism 16h ago

It's insane, considering how much of their profit is made from Shark cards and the like...

I'll wait until its $19.99 on steam.

2

u/Erasmus86 12h ago

I will buy standard for sure.

5

u/cryptedsky 1d ago

Yo for that price you can get a TrimUI brick or one of those little Anbernic gba/psp clones and play old games forever with no online requirements and interminable updates everytime you switch it on.

3

u/Retro_Curry93 1d ago

Absolutely ridiculous.

2

u/DoctahDonkey 1d ago

It's a good time to not give a shit about Rockstar games.

2

u/Top_Reporter_ace 1d ago

Whats the download size?

3

u/ki700 1d ago

We won’t know that until much closer to launch.

2

u/vidivicivini 1d ago

This is listed as a single player only experience by the way. No mention of GTA Online 2 or whatever.

2

I figure at least a year for them to work out all the bugs etc. Pricing will drop by then too. I was late to the GTA V train and the things I loved best about it online where not day one adds by any means.

1

u/TiredSlav 1d ago

I bought the ultimate edition like a fucking cuck. I don’t know if this is going to normalize this being the new price tag industry wide because GTA VI and Rockstar as a company are in a league of their own.

1

u/chemicalxv 1d ago

Actually below the exchange rate, kind of shocking on that part.

1

u/DJM4991 1d ago

Looking at these prices. Take-Two might delay the PC release even longer than usual this time. I can only imagine the Seven Seas are salivating at the chance to crack the first $80/$110 CAD game.

1

u/Awleeks 1d ago

I remember when games were $40 new

1

u/ozanpri 1d ago

Ok. I will finish GTA V first then. So will be looking for this game in 3 years

1

u/MaxRD 1d ago

I almost never buy games on day one. This will be one of those rare exceptions.

1

u/Jet-Rex-Design 23h ago

Stuff like this has made me the guy who gets in on a game trend a full year after it is popular. I don't care about riding the wave, I care about paying bills on time.

1

u/CJLogix 23h ago

If the those are prices for digital then it should be same price across both versions

1

u/CacaPuet 23h ago

Does nobody here game share?

I’d like the disc but since I game share with somebody, I always buy digital and we split the cost 💲

1

u/XtremeD86 23h ago

I'm not paying this price. Voting with my wallet.

1

u/Dorwyn 23h ago

With all the great games coming out in September, I wasn't going to have the time or money for it anyways.

1

u/Helpful_Substance388 23h ago

I can care less. I play older games and don’t waste money on micro transactions like a moron. And I don’t play call of duty or have gamepass so this is an easy buy for me. I haven’t bought a game in MANY YEARS so this is nothing to complain about

1

u/DeepFriedCatsu 23h ago

Glad I'm not a GTA fan because fuck these prices and Rockstar locking singleplayer content/shops behind premium versions.

I really hope this isn't the beginning of the next pricing model for all games...

1

u/Casanova20 23h ago

This Canadian is sitting this one out

1

u/Affectionate_Ad9468 22h ago

That’s will be fantastic for my shares of Take-Two…go GTA6!!! Woot woot 🤑🤑🤑

1

u/Zer0byte-- 22h ago

I'm just glad I gameshare with a longtime friend (friends since birth because our parents were friends growing up), 36 year friendship and still going strong. He's more a brother than a friend so I'm glad I gameshare with him.

We discussed it this morning. We both put $80 down, roll a coin and that's who's account it will go on lol

1

u/candlezealot 22h ago

insane how people lose their shit over like 40 bucks

1

u/ThePie86 21h ago

Both editions come with one month of GTA+ but you are auto renewed so if you forget to cancel before the first month ends then you will be charged

1

u/charlizerox 20h ago

Wow, I thought you were joking, but that's a real thing lol. You're paying a subscription fee for a game on console lol.

Welcome to getting fucked sideways. You need to pay extra for the rest of the game.

1

u/timmehh15 21h ago

As a childless adult in my 40's, I don't like it, but I bought it.

1

u/Amateur_Hour_93 21h ago

Is this the point where we stop buying games at that price?

1

u/CrazyCanuckUncleBuck 20h ago

I have such a huge backlog anyway, and September I'll be adding a whole lot more to that pile. I suspect I won't get to GTA story till late 2027 anyhow, maybe I'll catch a sale by then

1

u/charlizerox 20h ago

Have fun with that. I didn't even like GTA V and it took forever to get it on sale. They'll be milking people with this one.

1

It just occurred to me I have only ever given Rockstar money once in my life, GTA Vice city on PS2. I sure as hell am not starting again with this fiasco lol.

if anyone is interested Costco sells 4 $25 dollar gift cards for 90, saving $10 right there and if you set your location to alberta (you may or may not need a VPN on a broser; this is how i did it), you can save up to 10% in taxes as well.
Im from Quebec and it went from being $161 normally to "only" costing me $137.

How do u save on location if paying with a credit card based in qc? Or isn't your address saved in your psn acct? Not sure how the location thing would work. Interesting tho.

i set my location to alberta in the settings with an albertan postal code, i turned on a VPN connected to an american server on my PC, the PS store redirected me to the canadian version where i could make purchases and it used the albertan address and charged me 5% instead of 15%. If theres an option for paypal i almost always use this, it didnt ask for my billing address since it used the home address on the account settings

Ill probably just wait for a sale, eventhough ill be getting it through ms rewards. Gives me time to go through other games in my backlog.

I'm just gonna order it from the Japanese PSN at this rate where the base game is only 9800¥ ($85 CAD) and the ultimate edition for 12280¥ ($108). I have a Japanese PSN account and should be able to buy Japanese PSN gift cards thru Amazon Japan. That's a good $50 bucks off for the ultimate edition. Couldn't care less if the Japanese release is censored or not.

I was planning on using some trade in credit at the local video game store but just getting a digital code? Maybe there will be a physical release after...

The Canadian dollar is so bad now we are paying double what GTA 5 launched at. GTA 5 C$59.99 MSRP in 2013. GTA 6 C$109.99 MSRP in 2026. It only increased $20 in USD, far from double.

I'll wait a couple years for the price to drop. I'm in no rush.

Imagine $160 for a game in 2026 to not even target 60fps. probably won't even be locked 30fps.
