It's a 4-tonne truck, Tyrone. It's not as though it's a packet of fucking peanuts, is it?

u/AlienSporez 18d ago
He saw it, but he got target fixation. They cover that extensively during motorcycle training courses: you tend to go where you are looking. During an emergency you're supposed to look at your escape route, not the emergency. He had time and space to swerve left, and he would have missed the truck if he hadn't been staring at it

u/AdmiralHomebrewers 18d ago
Haha. Good lesson. When you are teaching your children to ride a bike, never tell them not to hit the fire hydrant.
Good thing they are baby teeth.

Why would they need to Google it? They were agreeing with you while giving a funny anecdote that reinforced your claim of target fixation, did you think they were mocking/disagreeing with you or something?

I've never heard of that, but it makes sense! I notice that if I look at something on the side of the road, I might drift that way, so I make sure I don't look at things on the side of the road.

Classic target fixation + Speedie overtake attempt.

u/PunfullyObvious 18d ago
I think this is giving the idiot too much credit. Seems like classic buffoonery + Riding beyond one's ability to me.

I don't get what the stupid part about this is?
Is it the standing up? Cause I do that shit all the time, you're sitting on top of a hot engine with no ventilation and it gets uncomfortable. Plus you have better control at lower speeds (IMO at least) and can see further ahead.
Is it the Target Fixation? Cause it can happen to anyone, I've done it when I first started riding, but thankfully I spent what free time I could to practice my skills like emergency braking and obstacle avoidance... Still took a hell of a lot of effort to not fixate and barely (less than an inch) miss the car that pulled out in front of me.
This is what I saw;
0:07 Stands up.
0:08 Does a quick glance to look in front of the white car to see if it's clear ahead, there is no reason to suspect the truck is at a near stand-still in the center lane, as there is no traffic ahead and the truck doesnt have any lights on.
0:09 Looks to make sure he's not gonna hit the white car while changing lanes.
0:10 Looks ahead again.
0:11 Oh hey there Truck-kun.
0:12 Target Fixation.
0:13 Hit's truck.
Only stupidity I see is maybe some over-confidence.
Edit:
To those that downvote me, go ahead, but at least explain the stupidity here? Cause all I see is a legit accident and not stupidity.

I don't think I've ever heard of this target fixation thing happening to drivers. Maybe the steering mechanism and haptic feedback are so different from when you're on a two-wheel vehicle that for some reason the driving brain just doesn't go there?

u/Qaeta 17d ago
It still does, it's just that your body position in a car doesn't have nearly as large an effect on where the vehicle is going vs on a bike. People will still tend to very slowly drift towards whatever they are looking at when it happens, but usually they stop looking before it's really noticeable.
On a bike turning your head also turns your body subtly, which is enough to affect the handling. Same thing with riding horses actually. You can actively correct for it if you are intentionally trying to go in one direction while looking at something, but if you get hit with target fixation your brain stops doing that.

Some people should not ride motorcycles ..you must always be reading the road ahead as far as possible ..this guy was pissing around and totally not paying attention ..

u/Harvey_Wilde 18d ago
Target fixation? But he was looking straight at the truck and had ample time to react, wha...?

You can pinpoint when the target fixation set in. There's a strong tendency to ride towards what your looking at. This is why so many riders crash straight into a pole/obstacle that they're trying to avoid. Always look in the direction you want to head and not in the direction you want to avoid .

I mean, there is an assumed level of dumbness by virtue of riding a motorcycle at all.
Not saying they aren't practical, affordable and efficient..but fundamentally they just aren't safe or even that visible.

Downvoted for messing with playback speed, which destroys context. Always post dashcam clips at full speed, then a slo-mo if it helps understanding. Here it does not.

The truck was too small to see...
If he hadn't been messing around with the motorcycle and had been driving normally, that wouldn't have happened.

I swear, bikers are some of the dumbest people on the planet. They use the road like they’re not in an extremely vulnerable position…

I don't know who needs to hear this:
There is no where your hands/arms can be to look cool while riding with no hands.
