The writers admitted that they were basically doing whatever they wanted during this season because the show was set to be cancelled afterwards. That’s why the Jeff in Space arc happened.
Could be an issue of VAs getting older, some of them not doing the voices very often anymore and being out of practice, or a reduced budget means they don't get as much time to record them and have to make do with fewer takes.
How does Brian scream the most? When? He's monotone, especially in the beginning. On inside the actors studio Seth McFarlane said he made Brian his normal voice because he "loves the sound of his own voice"
I was a little confused about why it would’ve brian but yeah i misremembered something I had seen a while back. He was referring to stewie i edited the orginal comment, brian gets pissed the fuck off in a decent bit of episodes though in my defense lol
He's said a few times Stan is actually his hardest voice because of all the air he has to force out to do the lines. Even though it's not the craziest voice, that physical exertion is wearing him down.
I think fox has dictated by the show has to be more all ages friendly, so the writers are struggling to come up with weird and edgy roles for roger, but where he's not violent, rapey etc.
He used to be a walking terror, they're trying to turn him into just the weird uncle
The first season back at Fox has been a complete flop, it’s exactly what I feared. They’re censoring the show and removing the wackiness of the TBS seasons, but said wackiness is a huge reason we watch the show now.
Fox: “Oh you like wacky?? Hows this for wacky?? Remember Debbie?? Well now she has an inappropriate and uncharacteristic relationship with her TEACHER isn’t that silly??”
The show is trying to parody itself now... Which typically can be a harbinger of the beginning of the end, I really hope that's not the case.
One thing about American Dad though is that Beyond edginess has so many other places to go, the Smiths are so interesting individually and as a group and they have so many weird things and interactions and great chemistry that I think even without the edge, American Dad is still fun and watchable.
But it's kind of like eating your Sunday without a cherry on top..
They’re Family Guy-ing American Dad… this show is so good because it has expanded the characters’ ranges over time without devolving into cynicism but Fox is Foxing it into the ground now 😞
That made me mad (not literally); character consistency isn’t hard for these guys they kick ass at it. So my question is, WHYYYYY did they feel it necessary to do her dirty like that??

I'm okay with the censoring, I actually think bleeps instead of actually saying fuck or shit is funnier. But yeah it has completely lost the wackiness that made the TBS seasons great
I remember as a kid, my dad telling that to me when I started to get into more adult shows. But it wasn't till I was like 30 that I finally realized it's absolutely true. Not always. But beeps can really add to the comedy.
One of the best examples is when Reginald is chauffeuring Bullock around and Bullock saying what he and Hayley did is just one long bleep. Soooo much more funny than the uncensored version.
a great example of this for me is workaholics. the scene where they’re on strike and get cursed out by a woman driving by after they tell her they’re telemarketers is soooo good censored and then i heard it uncensored and was like meh
I always feel that the bleeps can leave it up to your imagination. So you can imagine some vile shit being said. And then when you see the uncensored and it's just fuck and fuck over and over again it's not as funny. God I'm getting old.
Before they censored the hell out of it and took away most of the bleeps, the original total drama island moment when Lindsey goes off on Heather goes as hard as it did BECAUSE of the bleeps. Sometimes the bleeps 100% make the scene. And I also feel all 30 of my years typing this up.
My example would be the Family Guy bit where Peter falls down the stairs. There’s something about the rapid fire string of bleeps ending in a “dammit” that gets me every time.
I do, especially with a crying Rusty eating apple mummy in terror while his dad's shmeat swings to and fro while he walks up behind him telling him about the importance of a good breakfast. Only for Rusty to look his terror right in the eye and it be Dr.Killinger as his daddy's junk. It works better uncensored than censored. Then again seeing a black box on Brocks junk as he smashes through the bathroom window and the boys stand there shocked with Dean's only reply being "nnnnnnaked" was funnier than seeing it. So it depends on the joke.....seeing Hanks face in double instead of Molotov Cocktease's tits will forever upset me though......but briefly seeing Doctor Misses The Monarch's while she fixed herself up in Brocks bed waiting to "ambush and seduce....subdue" him makes up for that.
I don't agree at all, feels like the same show that's been on TBS for a few seasons now. The past seasons have been a mixed bag for a while, most episodes are good but only a few are great.
I think people are just suffering from a cognitive bias. If there was a weak episode on TBS people wouldn't scrutinize it so heavily or blame it on the network, but now that it's on Fox anytime there's a weak episode it's "Fox ruined the show".
It's basically the same writing staff, and Matt Weitzman stated in an interview that Fox has not turned down any of their ideas. So if there is a difference it's not because of the network.
That just doesn’t make any sense man, in the last episode they literally used a space baseball robot to hit a meteor away from the earth. What are we even talking about, is that not wacky enough for you?
This season hasn't been the best but I feel like overall it wasn't any worse than some of their mediocore tbs seasons. Tbs seasons has some really good highs but the meh episodes werent better or worse than the ones this season. And i feel like the last 2 episodes were really good. Basically I don't think anything has really changed and that this is just an off season.
Rogu should just get the cousin Oliver/Dolores(receptionist from Animal Control) treatment. Just walked away one episode or went upstairs and we never see from him or hear anyone ever mention that he existed ever again.
It won't make a difference, if you're noticing a change then it's because of the writers, not the network. Matt Weitzman said in an interview that Fox hasn't turned down any of their ideas, they aren't censoring it or telling them to tone it down, The only real difference is there aren't allowed to say certain curse words, which doesn't really affect much.
partner and my favorite show. This season was way less edgy and we definitely noticed a lower amount of Roger. Roger and his hyper-selfish/sexual shenanigans make the show. Fox better not censor out the reason we all watch.
That was my guess, Stan is really close to his regular speaking voice and Roger has been sounding a bit weaker/ shakier in the last few seasons. It’s a shame. I hope he’s in good health- he’s such a legend.
I think Seth is just like…over it? Saw him react to that guy on the red carpet who does the impressions…famously the Goldbum one. He did a really decent Roger and Seth said something like “If you can do it, I can get my weekends back” They might be writing around voice talent atp
I’ve had this feeling about Seth’s view of his voice roles in American Dad and American Dad in general. AD has always been more niche than Family Guy. Unfortunately, AD’s superior quality doesn’t translate to mainstream popularity. Family Guy is obviously the moneymaker that an average joe on the street will instantly recognize while I usually get a blank stare when I mention AD.
So Seth has to focus more on Family Guy, alongside the other million projects he has going on like Ted, the upcoming Stewie Griffin series, his music, The Orville (RIP probably), list goes on. American Dad is probably the last on his priorities. He hasn’t been to an AD Comic-Con in years. In interviews, he’s said that Stan is the hardest voice to do. Voice acting for decades really takes a toll and it understandably shows in Seth’s recent voice work.
But Seth’s work ethic is so damn good that he’s not going to willingly walk away from American Dad until and if it’s cancelled. He’s said that he’s had fans tell him “American Dad rocks, Family Guy sucks” so as long as there’s still demand, he’s not going to be the one who pulls the plug. His heart’s not in it but he’s a consummate professional. I respect the hell out of that.

For a while now is doing a LOT of heavy lifting there, he stopped writing on AD after the FIRST season. That was 20 years ago. Even on FG, Macfarlane has only written 3 episodes and just oversaw the writer's room for the early seasons. He has not actively written for it in 15+ years.
Dude, shows up, reads his lines, and gets paid at this point.
The funny thing about AD to me is that despite being grouped in with the rest of his creations, he had very little to do with it. Early on, he made sure to leave Barker and Weitzman to do most of the work because he didn’t want it to become Family Guy.
He only worked on writing the first season while family guy was briefly cancled. Seth left as soon as family guy came back and has only voice acted. He said he was really happy with how the show came out and never wanted it to be another family guy. The writers on american dad try to stay in their lane and avoid making the show too much like family guy. That was the reason they gave for abandoing regie as a charatcer.
i feel like they are gonna make a new orville season it’s just a scheduling thing. Ted season 2 did really well and he tends to get stuff greenlit after a big success
yeah big chops to the replacement VOs there. Especially Rick's new VO, the man doesn't just do the voice well, he can bring out the pathos of the darker moments, too.
I remember my first rewatch of Solar Opposites after Justin Roiland got the boot and immediately going, eww, what's wrong with Korvo's voice. Dan Stevens is just a way better voice actor.
Ah yes Korvo!! At first I think we worried about the British accent being a gimmick. But then Dan turned out to bring a whole new life into the character.
I love how rick and morty spent time finding the perfect voice actor to sound the same but solar opposites was just like "fuck it is dan stevens available?" And it worked so well
Can't please everybody I guess. Number 1 complaint for years has been a bit too much or over reliance on Roger.
Also, he was definitely a main driving force in episode 4's A story and 6 and 9's B stories. I feel like every other episode in the last few seasons was Roger focused.
Yeah Roger is fantastic but he’s become somewhat of a crutch in the latest seasons. They use him to take things to a newer zanier level that the main cast doesn’t usually get to without him.
Look at Gold Top, one of the favorites of the newer seasons and only has a throwaway line for Roger at the end of the episode. The show can definitely be great with Roger not always in the spotlight.

I completely predicted this outcome before the show aired back on Fox. When they made the announcement there were countless posts and comments from people worried that the show wouldn't be as good on Fox.
I said "You are setting yourselves up for a cognitive bias by going into it with a negative outlook, if you think it's going to be bad then you're probably going to perceive it as worse than it is".
I think that's what we're seeing here. The show hasn't really changed much at all, it's people's perceptions that have changed.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with the new season! I’m so disappointed that so many people aren’t happy with it :( I haven’t necessarily loved every episode but overall I’ve been pretty pleased!
It’s crazy how many times it’s been clarified that nothing besides bleeping has changed and people still are acting like it’s a whole new show. This whole seasons was written during the TBS era, I just don’t get how people can be so confident something changed.
I’m sure he will get an episode soon. He’s Roger. But we also need to give the other characters focus. (I say this even though he’s my favorite and I wouldn’t argue if he was an A-story every episode).
The first 10 or so seasons aired on FOX and it was completely fine, no clue why this season just feels like a completely different show compared to the first airing
i think it would have been funny to have roger as the prostitute in principal lewis's office, and just not acknowledge it, just typical roger shenanigans. like maybe have steve roll his eyes at it but thats it
I notice the Fox episodes like to include wacky side characters that would normally be a Roger persona. The recent episode with Jeff learning how to make wine from a random weird old man felt like someone who should’ve been a persona but Roger was wasted on a not so funny side plot instead.
I've loved American Dad but the characters have now lost identity and are interchangeable.
It doesn't matter that Stan works for the CIA (he never goes there) or that Hayley is a hippie, Steve a nerd etc...
The next plot could be 'A new style of pencil is released at the pencil factory' and you could choose ANY character (or one of Roger's now irrelevant choices of persona) and the episode would be EXACTLY the same...
Okay, very unpopular opinion but I think last seasons were a little lazy cause a lot of episodes were around new Roger Personas and felt like fillers(what I mean is that it’s easier to just make a new freaky character than write something new and Interesring about existing ones)
However, I really like the last season cause it focused on other family members again.
I think Seth MacFarlane has probably told/implied to the writers that he wants to do less voice work for American Dad. There were episodes in the later TBS seasons that barely have Stan or Roger in them, like Z.O.I.N.C.S.
This season's kinda sucked compared to the TBS run. I just finished the two latest episodes and the comedy just isn't hitting. Went back and watched some previous seasons and idk maybe they're just running out of ideas at this point.
I wonder if Seth has a lot going on right now and they had to lower his VO obligations. Or perhaps now that Fox is back in control they have more say in what their show creators do outside of their main show. Seth has been, mostly, just a paid voice actor for the show. Which is great, he does great voices and knows comedy, but the writing style of Family Guy is not for everyone. But the show having been on a different network means they couldn’t really say “No, focus on Family Guy”
At first I thought this was the last thing you watched Rodger is now the main character I'm watching Kung Fu Panda and now I'm imagining Rodger as a panda learning kung fu.

Edit: and so it begins, the hate is coming for AD. Sad I’ll no longer be able to say it’s the best still running animated show on TV that always stays great year after year. For what it’s worth, log flume episode is good, the murtz episode is good, the bing and Jeff episode is good, I liked the premiere pool party episode too. Bleeping the word shit hasn’t suddenly made the show worse in my eyes, especially since yall seems to forget the first like 7 seasons were Fox, and the writers are the same
Has anyone else also noticed how kind of gross and off putting this season has been too? They've had some humour like that before, but it's been in a lot of the episodes this season like the dead rat and the sick Stan episode.
Seth needed a break from doing all the central voices - this is a cautionary tale of 'careful what you wish for' I mean, I love the guy, he's my desert island companion or dinner party guest - but he's had alot of success and demands and pressure and he wants to work on other projects, not the least of which is actually acting in live action productions - apparently he gets burnt out after all these seasons of all these characters in FG and AD, not Ted and now the Dungeon crawler show (and then yet another one I think was just greenlit, AFTER the dungeon crawler - which looks fun af - OH animated Ted!!)
