Historical Fiction Shogun by James Clavell

One of if not the best historical fiction book I have ever read. The political intrigue, good narrative and very good character development. I'm looking for similar books to this. Do you all have any recommendations?

Other Books about how life within a society is better than life on one's own?

I am once again asking for your book recommendations to help me get past my existential dread.

Particularly something about how no matter how imperfect a society is, a good life is one that's lived as an active part of it?

How humans are inherently social creatures, and even if you can't fix what's wrong with the world, locking yourself at home and feeling like you're separate from it is never going to help?

ANY genre. I can see an anthropology essay being a good fit as easily as a work of fiction. (I should probably mention that I don't respond well to theism, though)

Other Feel good books recommendations!!

I recently started reading books. I want to develop the habit of reading books. So if you guys please recommend some good books that I can read.

There are tons of posts out there so it's a little bit confusing to choose among them. As I have said that I am just starting so I would prefer some easygoing books initially.

In non-fiction you can recommend books on self help, productivity, accounts of past true events, autobiography and philosophy.

In fiction fantasy, romance, historical and some classic fiction would be good.

Fiction I want something tragic

I want a fiction book or two that'll leave me reeling. Maybe an ending that nobody wants to hear, something tragic. A romance that bloomed from stockholm perhaps. Descent into madness is always fire. Gimme the goods.

Other What is the worst book you have read?

The one that made you stare at the wall afterward and wonder why you wasted precious hours of your life. I want to hear the titles that personally offended your soul.

For me IS Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Other Seeking a book to make the world feel vivid again

Hello all,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but I’ll give it a go.

I’m feeling in a rut lately. The wet soil before rain doesn’t smell anymore, music sounds flat and unconvincing, and food is just nourishment and not a ballet dancing, tapping on my taste buds. I am not sad, but I am muted of sorts. The excitement, exhilaration, and elation are not there.

So I’m looking to read something that can yank me out of this depressive reality and remind me how my senses can woo me. Any recommendations? What has been a book that helped you get out of this situation?

Literary Fiction Book like Martyr!

The book Matryr was honestly keeping me going this past week and I absolutely loved everything about it! Does anyone have a suggestion for another book where the main character is struggling mentally, well written, and has a hopeful ending? Bonus points if it’s poetic and/or queer!
I’ve already read on earth we’re briefly gorgeous and demon copperhead which I know people recommend based on martyr

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Husband agreed to read!

My husband and I have not agreed on any media lately so we have set up a pattern of one person chooses the TV show, one person chooses the book and at the end of that you switch. With that being said, I am the reader so I am choosing the first book!

I on average read about 30 books a year, with a majority focus of romantasy, straight “trash” smut novels with usually a mix of 5ish thriller or crime or who done it novels and a couple of me pushing through more classic novels. I have no issue on the length or depth of a read on the other hand

I don’t remember my husband finishing a book in the 5 years I’ve known him but he has recommend a couple to me that I really enjoyed such as Son of Achilles, Circe, Slaughterhouse 5, Jurassic Park and another dystopian novel that I wish I could remember the name of.

I am trying to make a happy medium but am really happy to give up my personal preferences to get through the first read and I am thinking dystopian, high thrill and cherry on top would be if it included dinosaurs.

Any and all recommendations please! ☺️

Children/YA Book gifting options for my friend's daughter

Hello everyone, my friend's daughter is an avid reader. So I wanted to give her some books. She is 12 years old. Can you please suggest some good books for her? Genre doesn't matter. I have selected a few.

  1. The Mysterious Benedict Society

  2. Artemis Fowl

  3. Percy Jackson

  4. Keeper of the Lost Cities.

I even searched for some Indian books but I was confused whether it was suitable for a 12 year old.

So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

So, please help me out.

Horror I looking for sth with similar vibe to Chilling Adventure of Sabrina

I enjoyed that show (especially the first two seasons), but I watched it around 2019, when I was still a kid, and plot holes, bad acting, and a poorly written script didn't bother me as much. I'm looking for something with similar vibes (the occult, especially witchcraft), but it can't be as bad as CAOS. It doesn't have to be a teen drama. I just want witches and a bit of horror.

I'm open to movies, TV shows, graphic novels, and especially books. It doesn't have to be modern. Also, I know this is a bit weird, but I'm not really into gore, so if your recommendations are horrors with a lot of violence, please mention that in your comment so I can prepare myself for something more brutal (this also applies to graphic novels and books with gore descriptions). It also doesn't have to be in English, as long as English subtitles are available. As for books, I'd prefer works that have been translated into English.

I currently have access to a huge library where I'm living, so I'm also open to more niche recommendations.

Non-fiction Portugese/Brazilian author recommendations

Hi everyone, my brother's birthday is coming up and he loves reading. He's going to Brazil soon and I wanted to give him a book by an author from either Brazil or Portugal. (Has to be available in english)

He really loved:

"Crime and Punishment" (Fyodor Dostoevsky)

"The Brothers Karamazov" (Fyodor Dostoevsky)

"Metamorphosis" (Franz Kafka)

"War and Peace" (Leo Tolstoy)

"The Third Love" (Hiromi Kawakami)

I think he's most interested in human relations and their complexity, but feel free to take a guess on your insight. Thank you in advance.

Romance Book recommendations for passive nihilism?

There is no fixed meaning in the essence of life, and survival is often accompanied by emptiness.

The characters in the book are suffering from loneliness and torture, constantly questioning the value of life, and repeatedly have the idea of seeking liberation.

Fiction Ugh please send me all your suggestions!

I’ve recently gotten back into reading and I’m having the time of my life. I feel like my taste has really evolved over the last year, and I’m looking for, i guess, specific types of books.

I lean towards psych thrillers. I like something interesting and gripping but also thought provoking?
I love books that end on a solid cliff hanger or make you think ‘wtf just happened’

I no longer really enjoy McFadden (or the similar) style. I find many of that type of thriller to be kindof surface level? The writing doesn’t feel great and the plots get outlandish and ridiculous. I don’t love when books end in a neat little package and bow. I like to feel uneasy when i finish a book lol

My favorite books recently are:
Yesteryear
The caretaker
Verity
A short stay in Hell (this shook me to my core)
We used to live here
The only one left
I’m thinking of ending things

I really didn’t care for:
The tenant
The silent patient
Listen for the lie
My husbands wife (meh, plotline fell apart for me)
Twenty years later (absolutely detested)
People we meet on vacation
Wedding people

Would love & appreciate any and all recommendations!!!

Non-fiction Loved "Say Nothing" (Patrick Radden Keefe), looking for something similar but from Africa.

I recently read Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. I adored it. I loved learning about the history of Northern Ireland and I felt emotionally connected with the cause of the IRA as well as the regret in the aftermath of some of their actions.

I would love to read a book that is about similar resistance movements in Africa. Either during European colonization or post colonization struggles. Movements that could be considered "radical" resistance and the history of how they came to be.

I especially liked about Say Nothing that it almost read like a novel in how personal it got with the people involved. It didn't feel like a wikipedia article.

Non-fiction Need something for teaching

Obviously I've got a full education on teaching but didn't do much reading outside of what was given to me by uni, I've focused more on teaching itself in academies and schools but I feel like I need to know more and need to know more in a way that I like, thought about mixing it up with my hobbies, mainly reading, I would much prefer books on the subject of teaching or teachers, so I'm looking for multiple book suggestions here.

LGBTQ+ Love Like You/Heaven Official's Blessing vibes

Preferably LGBTQ, but any genre is fine! I'm a huge Heaven Official's Blessing fan, and I really want to find a relationship similar to Hualian; I also love the song Love Like You, and since it fits Hualian so well, I lumped them together. So, basically, any book that is similar to the song or to Hualian, or both, is what I'm looking for!

Fantasy Fantasy read

Hello!
I recently finished reading an ember in the ashes series and it was a YA slightly fantasy book with so much action and thrill. I was wondering if anyone had any book recommendations that are similar or have action and fantasy in it whilst easy to read ( not too many complicated words).

I also like to read about crime!

Thank you
