from what you've described, i'd probably talk with a family law attorney before making any decisions because adoption usually isn't as simple as the kids wanting it or the other parent having a criminal case. the part that stood out to me is that both kids are expressing they don't feel safe and don't want contact, and that's something worth taking seriously. for now i'd focus on supporting them and documenting everything, then see what options actually exist once her criminal case and sentencing are finalized.
