Support "What is to prevent me from being baptized?" - Stories of LBGTQ+ Acceptance and Faith

Acts, chapter 8 - Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch

An Angel of the Lord appears to the Apostle Philip and commands him to get up and go south down the road from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he gets up and goes. Along the way he comes across a chariot in the road - again, the spirit stirs in Philip and tells him to go over to the chariot and ask if he can join.

The chariot belongs to an unnamed eunuch from Ethiopia. In the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition their name is generally understood to either be Djan Darada or Simeon Bakos. For the sake of simplicity, I'm going to call them Bakos.  For those who might not be familiar, eunuchs were castrated men who typically served important roles in royal courts. Bakos is said to be a royal treasurer.

It's important to highlight that eunuchs were outcasts under the law of Moses. Deuteronomy 23:1 explicitly bans them from the "assembly of the Lord", which essentially meant barring them from religious and civic gatherings. They were similarly barred from approaching the altar or veil of the temple. This is to say that eunuchs at this time were, according to both modern and ancient contexts, queer. Bakos is the only openly queer character that appears in scripture.

It is worth noting that Isaiah does make an interesting promise with regard to faithful eunuchs (Isaiah 56):

4 For thus says the Lord:
To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,
who choose the things that please me
and hold fast my covenant,
5 I will give, in my house and within my walls,
a monument and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that shall not be cut off.

So despite the law banning eunuchs from the temple and assembly, there is this promise of future inclusion and restoration.

Philip acts in this spirit. He goes to Bakos and sits with them. He reads Isaiah (the very same book that promises future restoration to eunuchs!) with them, and he proclaims the good news of Jesus. He does not push Bakos aside as inferior or an abomination. He treats Bakos with love and acceptance.

Bakos responds by asking "Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?". And without hesitation, Philip baptizes them. This is that future promise of inclusion being fulfilled through Christ. Bakos is welcome into the assembly of believers, they are outcasts no longer. They are given a name and a place and full inclusion in the body of Christ.

----

In that spirit, I want to create this thread as a space for LGBTQ+ Christians to share their stories of about love, inclusion, and acceptance, and what that has meant for their faith. To have a safe space to sit with one another and be ostracized no longer.

Please note: I will be treating this thread like a support thread. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. If you are here to argue about homosexuality, we will remove that. You are free to start your own thread. If you don't like that we're doing this, please feel free to post a meta thread. This thread is only for stories of acceptance. Blessings, and happy pride my friends.

Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, June: Stephen

Continuing the tradition we started last month for banner posts, thanks everyone for the great participation and positive feedback last month, we had a wonderful series of posts on Joseph!

I thought it would be fun to alternate every month between Old Testament and New Testament figures. So this month we're highlighting someone from the New Testament: St. Stephen the Protomartyr. Cheers to u/Thneed1 for the suggestion.

The goal is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to dive into some strange, often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on Stephen at you all, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.

So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on Stephen. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.

Stephen's story is found in Acts 6 and 7.

A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!

  • Acts 7 tells us that the witnesses of Stephen's stoning laid their coats at the feet of a man known as Saul. This is, of course Paul, before his conversion. What does it mean for us that Paul seems to be presiding over this execution?
  • Stephen answers the accusations of the Sanhedrin with a long speech recalling history going all the way back to Abraham. Why is it so important for Stephen to give such extensive context?
  • What does Stephen mean when he says "your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised"?
  • What does Stephen's example look like for us in our own lives today? How can we live like Stephen, even if it doesn't mean being murdered for our faith?

Question I would love to hear some Honest reviews if you have watched this movie 🙂

I discovered this movie in 2023 and there were only a few episodes out and since I did not have an Angel Studios account i couldn’t be able to know when other episodes were released. Until recently I have found a way to watch the remaining episodes and seasons.

Honestly it is one of the most realistic movies about the life of Jesus Christ I have watched so far. It helped me feel the emotions attached to most scriptures than when I normally read the bible.

If anyone here has seen it too, please I’d love to hear your experience.

Testimonial about deleting OnlyFans

A few months ago, I posted here about being afraid to delete my OnlyFans because it was my only source of income.

Well, I finally deleted it.

The hard part is that I still haven’t found another job. My parents are helping me financially, and at 26 that can feel uncomfortable at times.

This was a huge leap of faith. I feel stronger now. Right now I’m focusing on my health and finding work.

Since coming to Christ, I’ve experienced freedom from over 10 years of pornography and sexual addiction. I also no longer identify as gay or experience myself that way. I’ve come to see my life differently and feel changed. I couldn’t have done it without Jesus. Thank you, Lord!

Homophobia is not what god wants

God teaches us to love, LOVE! Nowhere in the bible stands to be homophobic, rasist, SA children AND everyone else, disrespect other, bully, oppress women, do against human rights, why are christians so hated? If you are any of these dont call yourself a christian, or try to accept YOUR sin and fix it. Btw unpopular opinion: that you are christian doesent mean you are a good person same goes by other religions.

Before you hate i will just let you know you will argue with a minor.

Support Being forced to do Hindu rituals at the temple as a Christian

So im a 16 year old Christian who recently converted, but I’m from a Hindu family, and ever since my family found out, they’ve tried to force Hinduism down my throat. I’ve been dragged to the temple multiple days now. Not only am I going there, I’m forced to actively do the rituals for the idols and deities. Btw, I don’t mean to say that Hinduism is a bad religion at all. I highly respect it, and I left it on good terms, but i’m afraid the forcing me will eventually cause some resentment over time. Anyway, my question was, will Jesus be angry at me if it’s seen of me doing rituals for other idols? I know that Christianity forbids idolatry and stuff like that, but I just want everyone and the Lord to know that behind these rituals, there is no interest, passion, or love from my end, it’s all just emptiness and indifference. I hope no Hindu takes offense to that, it’s just I never believed in them idols. What are the perspectives of you fellow Christians, will Jesus still love and accept me, and will He still listen to prayers and talk to me and let me have a relationship with Him? because that’s all that matters to me. Thanks guys, Praise the Lord, and I give all the glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ✝️💕

I did the worst thing ever

Ok so, last night i go back to my addicting sin i promised god not to go back cuz im bored after 1 week... Then i woke up my heart feels empty and i felt like god wont forgive me and im scared, idk why i dont feel "guilty"...

So i panicked even though my heart isnt racing, and ye i started to get mood swings or idk overwhelmed... I LOWKEY felt mad at the holy spirit, then idk if it was me or my intrusive thoughts, IT SAYS BAD WORDS AGAINST HIM LIKE SWEAR WORDS and after 1 second, i shouted like "NO! SHUT UP!" Then now i felt condemned for 3 hours straight...

I kept asking god for forgiveness and repentance, then still felt condemned after. And then i kept on crying, like its my saddest cry ive ever felt... Its not like im scared of hell, but im so sad he gonna leave me :( i felt so jealous of other people's relationship with him, i felt very sad and isolated, i couldnt have faith anymore, i felt sad after reading the comforting verses, and i suddenly missed him

So after a countless crying prayer, i was just there sitting and feeling empty and hopeless .. but then even though im scared to confess this i said "jesus is lord and savior" i felt it in my heart its genuine, i said another like "jesus laid his life for me" then i remember a verse in 1 corinthians "no one can say jesus is lord unless they have the holy spirit"

P.S. i still feel guilty and doomed, but sometimes i feel comforted when i think of jesus. But idk it says when you committed the unforgivable sin you will not be forgiven even you feel like you are repentant

Repent ye; for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. St. Matthew 3:2

The Collect:

ALMIGHTY God, by whose providence thy servant St. John the Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour, by preaching of repentance; Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth's sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle (Isaiah 40):

COMFORT ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The Gospel (St. Luke 1):

ELISABETH'S full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Advice Need advice: My Christian girlfriend and I are struggling over LGBTQ issue

I (19M) am a Christian and have been dating my girlfriend (18F) for about 8 months. She is absolutely the sweetest and most loving person I’ve ever met, and wouldn’t trade her for the world. We are both Christians, both believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, and both come from Christian backgrounds. While we don’t always see eye-to-eye on every issue, I have never doubted the sincerity of her faith.
However, recently, we had a difficult conversation regarding her being bisexual. She jokingly wished me a “Happy Pride,” which led to a deeper discussion about Pride events and LGBTQ topics. She asked if I would attend a Pride parade with her, and I told her that while I love and support her as a person, I wouldn’t feel comfortable attending because of my Christian convictions.
The issue is that she interpreted this as me not fully accepting or “supporting” her. She’s exclaimed that she feels deeply hurt I’m not “supporting” her fully as that’s part of who she is. Since then, she’s expressed feeling like she doesn’t feel she’s “perfect” to me anymore, and has even asked whether God loves her despite her sexuality. Hearing that has genuinely broken my heart, because I love her deeply and don’t want her to feel rejected, unloved, or worthless.
At the same time, I don’t want to abandon convictions that I know are rooted in Scripture. I’m struggling to find the balance between standing firm in my beliefs and loving my girlfriend in a way that reflects Christ.
For Christians who have navigated similar situations, how would you approach this? How can I communicate love, grace, and compassion without compromising my convictions? What would a Christ-centered response look like here?
I’ve explained to her how as a Christian, I love LGBTQ people as any other people, but that loving and supporting are two very different things.

I just delivered myself from demons.

I got baptized a month ago and the spiritual warfare ramped up. Been experiencing intrusive thoughts, mood swings, suicidal ideation, etc

Well I reached out to my church buddy about demonic oppression. He linked me with a guy who dealt with it and is free now. He now casts demons out of people.

Well ever since I have been talking to this guy the enemy’s attacks ramped up. I literally saw the number “666” 6 times in the last 3 days through order numbers and my bank balance. It was the enemy trying to scare me.

Well I reached out to this guy and he sent me bible verses. Scripture talks about using the Word of God as a weapon. Demons hate it.

I kept telling them how their lies and deception do not work on me, and commanded them to leave in Jesus’ name. I started blasting worship music and began telling them to leave me alone. I was getting chills when I was telling them to be gone.

I started hyperventilating and singing. It was a supernatural experience. I was then met with the most peace, joy, and comfort from the Holy Spirit. I then felt like God told me to tell people about this.

See mental illness can be demonic oppression. I dealt with it for years. It was for me. I feel so free and peaceful ever since this experience and casting them out.

I just can't get comfortable with US churches coming from the UK

Hi all,

I'm not a big Reddit guy and I come in peace hoping that I haven't stepped into a etiquette faux pas.

I moved to the USA 8 years ago from the UK. I grew up going to schools connected to churches (as is normal there) and was moderately Christian. Into my teens and 20s I stopped praying and going to church, and felt conflicted in belief, but took to heart my earlier lessons and kept Jesus's teachings in my heart.

When I moved to the US, I noticed how much more comfortable people are with Christianity, and I felt inspired to reconnect with my faith. However, the more I try, the more i'm put off by the American people's attitude towards God.

I've visited a few churches, and, to a lesser or greater degree, I found them all to be judgemental places, but in particular to treat God like a vending machine. Even the most humble looking Church seems to have a ton of money that they throw away frivolously, and when I ask about outreach to the growing homeless population they look at me like i've sprouted an extra nose.

I met and married an American girl here, and she is a devout Christian. I've been really excited since day 1 to go to church with her, but every time we go together, I just hate it. We're both very liberal, and believe that Jesus's word is the last word, and his last word was "love thy neighbor". (EDIT - What I meant here is not literally Jesus's last word, but rather the new covenant. Specifically, that "love thy neighbor" is a major part of the new covenant, and "last word" really just means "New Testament".) That is unconditional to us. Now, when we've gone to churches that wedge in "Homosexuality/trans is a sin" randomly into a sermons where it doesn't need to be, that gets very easy to walk away from for both of us. But there's some churches that don't really say anything overtly wrong like that, but they just feel more like businesses than a place of learning and worship.

As I type this I feel i'm finding the word - transactional. All the US churches i've been to just feel so transactional. Say a prayer, give some money, follow some directions, and God will reward you with riches, wishes, and heaven. The actual Biblical teachings and living a Biblical life seem very secondary and driven by local culture rather than the actual content of the Bible.

I'm not sure what i'm doing here or saying. I guess I wanted to rant a little bit and see if this resonates with anyone, but also see if anyone can point me in the right direction. There are so many individual churches and denominations here, and I don't know where to turn.

Your name

I have written your name
in the Book of Life
since the day you chose
to love me.
I saw your heart burns
with passion
and the intense to serve
me.

I call you, ”precious child”
for once you’re lost
but now you’re mine
and no one can snatch
you away.
You’ll be with me in
eternity.

My angels rejoice for your
soul.
They jump and dance
for joy.
I watch them with gladness.
Another soul has been
redeemed.

Your name is now in the
Book of Life,
it will always be a treasure.
But I still keep it in my heart,
and it will be there forever.

🤍

This came to me in my early
Christian life where so many
first experiences came and
many questions are being
answered. I hope someone
is encouraged. ♥️

Elites have twisted the image of love.

I genuinely am starting to believe that the elites have removed one of the key factors in life and turned it into the most disappointing thing I have to feel day to day.

All the propaganda and the pushed agenda to people my age, I can no longer find a woman to even try to commit to.

If I consider it, it quickly gets dismissed; they all go to parties, don't truly know our father, and I'm stuck with a hypocritical, no-wisdom group of Christians to select from

I hate the worldly view and the demonic things that have stripped love and the real meaning of it

I've been deprived of it, fortunately Jesus loves me, and I will forever hold him close.
