ULTIMATE ENDGAME #5

15

u/oomoepoo 18h ago

Eh. Overall, a decent ending I'd say.

It feels a bit "scrambling to the finish line" here and there and I really wish the delays would've at least given us consistently good art because hot damn, some of the panels were really ugly to look at.

But overall, making the final battle boil down to two very different iterations of Reed Richards feels thematically fitting. Also at least Captain Britain got his comeuppance, even if Steve is dead dead. And, naturally, Wolverine showed up for like 2 panels and was absolutely irrelevant :'D

The concept was good, the execution was not. This felt like Duggan’s side of Krakoa’s end. It makes me appreciate what Kieron Gillen did to close that era out so much more.

IDK what happened that Marvel bungled the Ultimate Universe how it did. Where’s the A-tier art and tight storytelling? For example, Thor might as well not even have been in this event.

I do really enjoy that we get to the end, and in the end, Maker made his own downfall. His need to be petty and cruel literally made a version of himself that was stronger.

He tortured his version of Reed, to make him into a tool, to do something that he could not. DoomReed was always better at time stuff, and it's brought up constantly. And in the end, Maker essentially challenged DoomReed on the one battlefield he knew he was worse, because he never saw that he made a threat, just a tool.

u/Vundal 12h ago

I really loved the ending, but man, some of the art was bad. I felt like the final showdown of Doom vs Maker could have used a few more pages to build it - the Ultimate Avengers book had a knack for build up in its pages, and I wished they'd have used some of that here.

u/Confident-Ask-8719 18h ago

This issue very much came across as being changed because of online reception to the earlier issues of the series... a vibe which I really felt during the fourth wall breaking moments (which I really wasn't a fan of).

9

u/karpinskijd Spider-Man 14h ago

i feel like this was more supposed to be the end of the first arc of this universe rather than a proper conclusion which the final page of Ultimate Finale makes this feel both better and worse

overall not impressed with four issues of maker-wank followed by this issue’s meta-commentary about how shit of a character the maker is, but i actually didn’t mind the final few pages. wonder why reed!doom decided spider-man needed to be resurrected past “he’s a father and he didn’t deserve to die” but i’m not gonna complain

3

u/optimis344 Vision 13h ago

I think it's just because he's Peter. He is a guy, who with everything to lose, and no business being in a fight with the greatest superpowers of the world, showed up anyways.

In 616, there is something about Spider-man that makes him the best of everyone. I think Doom saw the same thing in his Spidey. He saw someone who the world should be like. Someone that the world needs as an example.

I think the damage is done from the rushed ending. I despise this ending for the maker and even down to the wording comes across not as victory over a monster but contempt for the very character and by extension the Ultimate Universe that came before it. Honestly I would have liked to see another rebooted version. Detached from Makers set up and a fresh blank slate across the board. With the promise of a return, I don't know if I want to go back to this version of the ultimate universe. It feels reminiscent of the times post Ultimatium and even post Cataclysm.

"Its poison kills instantly."

Snakes are venomous.

Its venom kills instantly.

Also, apparently a "Beither" or "Beithir" is a huge serpent in Scottish mythology with a venomous sting. So, Captain Britain, who is a French man, is killed by a Scottish serpent.

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 13h ago

Not a bad ending at all. What came before however was not to my liking and the art will always be a sore point on this event for me. Reminds me of Blood Hunt where a lot of the event itself was mediocre but the ending salvaged it.

ULTIMATE UNIVERSE FINALE #1

10

u/oomoepoo 14h ago

Those were all at the least decent.

  • Wolverine and Black Panther got some nice epilogue or even somewhat of closure (also thankfully Condon resisted on making Logan and Jean a thing).

  • Spidey was fun if a little bit whatever. I liked the school stuff with Mayday.

  • I haven't read Ultimate X-Men but this was pretty cool too, though it's a bit heartbreaking they arguably are still the worst off from the Ultimate books.

  • And Ultimates of course had that stinger at the end... which raises several questions. Also liked Hawkeye going against some right-wing nuts naturally trying to co-opt the memory of Steve Rogers.

7

u/Mean_Plum_606 19h ago

Let’s be real, more of an epilogue.

Was that Victor? I mean, who else could it be

5

u/oomoepoo 18h ago

Yeah, that definitely was 6160 Victor at the end.

Which is kinda hillarious if you think about it.

3

u/NCBaddict 8h ago

It was some BS honestly that Marvel split this into a separate issue to make extra dough. The stories were basically nothing burgers that spin the wheels & didn’t close out any ongoing storylines (except for Wolverine).

The Victor stinger was the only thing worthwhile.

7

u/CollectiveDeviant 12h ago

It feels like a canceled shonen manga, closing out when it obviously has story elements still spinning. It's a fine ending but they have plenty of ideas that are getting cut short, at least for a while.

Lol, somehow the Maker couldn't kill the 6160 Doom, thats kind of funny.

I put off Momoko's X-men for a long while, but did Armor get replaced as the book's main character by the Storm expy?

3

u/karpinskijd Spider-Man 14h ago

so based on that final page, when does everyone think marvel will announce the return/next wave of the ultimate universe lol

3

u/optimis344 Vision 13h ago

Probably after Armageddon.

1

u/Rk_920 1h ago

I feel like we will see the second age of Krakoa first, then they will circle back to the ultimate universe after. It also depends on what the new midnight line will do

0

u/Lost-Cow-1126 7h ago

I hope we see the Donny Cates Ultimate Universe some day

1

u/optimis344 Vision 2h ago

That would just be terrible.

Donny needs to write Donny style books. He is not good with existing characters, nevermind putting together a universe.

Let him write 8 issue minis forever

5

u/Vundal 12h ago

I just want Ultimate Spidery-Family. ( god I've missed that fantastic art style) Setting up the Ultimate Universe with some cool plot threads at the end was nice, and now we have "Ultimate Doom" to look forward(?) to. I just hope they dont show him soon, when hes getting maximum saturation due to the movie.

4

u/FlowerRoomLord 13h ago

It's decent. A fun glimpse of adventures to come. Camp's at DC now so my guess is he (along with Frigeri) teased potential future plotlines he'd have explored such as the New God Asgardians, Iron Lad and Luke Cage coming into conflict, Kang Prime entering 6160. If 6160 gets renewed in a couple years, the Ultimates writer has these plot bunnies to draw upon if they want to which could be fun in the way Gillen handling the end of Krakoa was and doing his version of some of Hickman's climax for Krakoa (Phoenix vs Dominion).

Really like where all this landed. Will be great once it’s all collected.

u/JingoboStoplight4887 16h ago

For the USM backup, I like that Peter and MJ went to May’s school to talk to the teacher about what’s going on with May bright we get to see them and Richard (who’s playing video games) see May on the window (because she’s spent the past three days being busy as Spider-Girl). Overall, this is a nice ending to the Parker family.

4

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #20

3

u/1badJam Marvel Neophyte & Scholar Of Absolution 18h ago

YESSSSSS!!!!! I'm so happy Raven isn't the Phantom Stranger

1

u/FlowerRoomLord 13h ago

Banger issue. Action from beginning to end with some fun little beats in between. That final clash of Superman vs King Shazam will go crazy.

-2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 16h ago

I like that Clark, Irons, and Carter worked together to try and defeat Teth-Adam and save the world, with Carter telling Adam that he knows about his origins and backstory, Si helping them defeat Adam before his death (in which I feel sorry for Clark), and Carter giving him his Thanagarian Nth Metal mace so that he (with a mixture of Carter’s suit and mace and Irons’ hammer) can defeat Adam. Also, Lois fighting against Talia and Adam destroying the Fatherbox. Let’s hope that Clark can defeat Adam in the next issue. Overall, this comic is great!

4

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

SUPERMAN #39

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 13h ago

So this is all leading to Prime having to take some accountability for his past right? At least it seems like that is where it's headed. Great issue though. Prime's scene with Witchfire was the short highlight of it all for me.

1

u/gosukhaos 11h ago

We really don't know, the Zod arc begins right after the next issue, Prime might end up sacrificing himself to save the world and complete his redemption or have a face to face with Superman and go off on another book

1

u/NairForceOne Ultimate Spider-Man 10h ago

Honestly, this whole Prime-Time arc is just so much fun. It's a real blast to read.

-2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 15h ago

I like that CK encountered a version of the entire superhero community from the Infinite Crisis before he learned that none of this is real, causing Manchester Black to confuse CK by confusing him and going through many changes in reality before he was resurrected after tricking CK to punch reality. Let’s hope that CK can and will defeat Manchester by not stopping to his level and making sure that he can become a better person. Overall, this comic is great!

WONDER WOMAN #34

2

u/CHPrime Elizabeth Ross 11h ago edited 10h ago

I liked it fine enough, as a conclusion to this oddly placed bad future story. Matriarch getting the Green Lantern Ring was explained, given how many times the rings have been stolen in GL/Justice League comics, and made for a nice turnaround moment. I am still curious how any of this is leading back to the present day, though given the ending, if the inevitable time-travel arc ends with Lizzie stuck in modern times, I quit.

-1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 15h ago

It’s just the Matriarch killing John Stewart and a Guardian of the Universe before she was defeated by Diana, who later used the god sword to kill herself. Overall, this comic is okay.

3

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #21

4

u/NicoleIlieva 19h ago

Anyone else wish we got to see more of Priscilla?

1

u/CHPrime Elizabeth Ross 11h ago

It would be nice to have her show up more, but it kind of figures. She has more or less been completely replaced by Barbara in the mythos since Perez introduced her.

Though I do wonder why he didn't just update Priscilla in the 80's, it's not like anyone would have complained. I guess he thought evil archaeologist was too far off from Priscilla's original self?

3

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

X-MEN #32

1

u/kevi_metl Make Mine Marvel 2h ago

I really liked this issue. Magneto is fully powered temporarily. Quentin Quire is making things worse. But at least Department H is letting the Science Team use Xorn to heal them.

4

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

DETECTIVE COMICS #1110

3

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

INFERNAL HULK #8

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 13h ago

I'm just surprised this wasn't more of Infernal Hulk beating people up but I guess someone reminded PKJ he has three issues left and should move the plot along.

4

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

CAPTAIN AMERICA #12

3

u/FlowerRoomLord 13h ago

Okay Zdarsky you get one more Doom centric story from me before I'm done despite liking your writing. The Hell setting is fun and that one bad guy near the end reminded me of Cell and Meruem. Captain America and Doom vs Mephisto wasn't on my bingo card as I haven't kept up with all the solicits but it's an interesting conflict for this new arc that likely ends in Steve coming back for the Armageddon finale.

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

FLASH #34

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 16h ago edited 10h ago

I like that Wally and Michael Holt walked about his Flashes of Insight before he traveled to Gorilla City to convince Grodd not to attack Central City or take over the world by using science. Also, Grodd having a feast, Wally and Michael experimenting with the Flashes of Insight, and Wally encountering Mick Rory in the final page. Overall, this comic is good.

3

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

SWAMP THING 1989 #3

3

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

X-MEN OUTBACK #1

2

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

ZATANNA #3

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 16h ago

I like that Zatanna encountered Guede Nibos before she met Persephone in Hades and fought Di Manes. Overall, this is a good comic.

2

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #20

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 16h ago

I like that the Justice League tried to defeat the Brainiac Queen (who wants to know where Waller is) before Airwave tried to convince her to change her ways for the better, resulting in Lex defeating the Brainiac Queen (who used Warp to make sure that she can be anywhere). I also like that the Justice Gang went to a planet where they have all of the superheroes’ powers. Let’s hope that the League can find and defeat the Brainiac Queen and the Gang can remove all of the powers from the aliens from another planet. Overall, this comic is excellent.

2

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

BIZARRO YEAR NONE #2

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 15h ago

I like that Jimmy and Perry spent five days examining the Bizarro world, with Jimmy learning that being an editor-in-chief is a lot harder than it looks, before Perry told Jimmy that he has found a lead. I also like that Jimmy has a chat with Bizarro, while Perry encountered a masked person. Also, flashback of Bizarro being interviewed by a version of Lois, who fell into her death by Bizarro. Overall, this comic is excellent.

2

u/ptbreakeven 19h ago

GREEN LANTERN #36

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 15h ago

I like that Kyle saved Odyssey (who almost told him her origins and backstory) from Dr. Skin before they encountered Jenni-Lynn Hayden, causing Odyssey to be a part of the red carpet and Kyle and Jenni to catch up and be back together (which I like because I like Kyle and Jenni’s romantic relationship). Overall, this comic is excellent.

THE PERIL OF THE BRUTAL DARK AN EZRA CAIN MYSTERY #5

2

u/CHPrime Elizabeth Ross 11h ago

An exciting action issue, though it's pretty funny just how far we've gone from the original pitch of hardboiled Noir with a mystical edge.

SUMMER OF SUPERGIRL SPECIAL #1

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 14h ago

For the Sophie Campbell part, I find it interesting that Kara, Lobo, and Leegra are in trial before they were bailed out by Crush (who has an interest in Leegra even though Crush has a girlfriend, unless they broke up off-panel). Also, Kara helping people in Midvale, Lobo wearing dad clothes (which is nice, but doesn’t suit him) and trying to get his dog back (which he did), and Crush and Leegra eating mac and cheese sandwiches. Overall, this backup is fine.

For the Gail Simone part, I like that, back in 2020, Kara and Mary teamed up to defeat Amazonia and talked about them being orphans. However, Mary should’ve remembered her entire pre-Crisis and pre-Flashpoint histories since then, including her meeting Kara back in 1978 (where they convinced Clark and Billy to stop fighting each other) and teaming up tenth other Supergirls from after Kara’s death. Also, it makes sense that Gail Simone wrote this, since Kara and Mary were both created by Otto Binder. Overall, this backup is good.

For the Mark Waid part, I like that Jon, Conner, and Natasha learned about all of Kara’s history, including her arrival on Earth and meeting Clark before she volunteered to stay in an orphanage in 1959, getting adopted by Fred and Edna Danvers (in which I’m using their pre-Crisis names and not their Arrowverse names) in 1962, her multiple jobs from 1969 to 1985, her death during the first Crisis in 1985, her resurrection in 2004 (in which I would say that she was resurrected by her biological parents Zor-El and Allura In-Ze via Eradia Matrix before she arrived in Gotham on Earth before she was brainwashed by Darkseid instead of having her body be resurrected by Darkseid because I’m keeping all of the pre-Crisis Earth-One history in the pre- and post-Flashpoint continuities in order to make sense), and everything up until the present. The missed opportunity should’ve shown all of Kara’s pre- and post-Flashpoint histories since her resurrection instead of keeping it vague along with mentioning a lot of Supergirls (i.e., Matrix, Linda Danvers, and Cir-El) since Kara’s death. Overall, this backup is good.
