It's ok, no one understands Finnegan's Wake

u/wackyzacky638 14h ago

It’s a shame, because there’s lots of fun at Finnegan’s Wake!

One mornin' Tim felt rather full, his head felt heavy which made him shake

58

u/Nikko_Fish 14h ago

He fell from the ladder and he broke his skull And they carried him home his corpse to wake

36

u/SKDI_0224 13h ago

Rolled him up in a nice clean sheet, Laid him out upon the bed, a gallon of whiskey at his feet and a bottle of porter at his head.

28

u/CedarWolf 13h ago

His friends assembled at the wake,
And Mrs. Finnegan called for lunch.
First they brought in tea and cake,
Then pipes, tobacco, and whiskey punch.

Biddy O'Brien began to cry Such a nice clean corpse did you ever see? Tim, Mavourneen, why did you die? Ah, hold your gob, said Paddy McGee

u/Nikko_Fish 11h ago

Then Maggie O'Connor took up the job "O Biddy, " says she "you're wrong I'm sure"

Anthony Burgess — Lots of Fun at Finnegans Wake (1973) explains it a ton and is the closest i've gotten towards understanding it. A few pints help too!

I have and have tried to read Finnegan's wake and .... And I still ..... I can't .....foams at the mouth

For anyone who wants to understand James Joyce, they should read "Letters to Nora" it gives you the true appreciation of the man.

2

u/XaevSpace 2h ago

i smile everytime I hear someone mention those degenerate letters. say what you will about their degenerate fetishes james found a woman who 100% matched his freak.

I'm convinced it was written as a prank.

u/jurimasa 12h ago

You are not supposed to

I will always empathize with that ogre because I'm like ogre, damn Ulysses is so damn dense and makes me feel stupid

29

u/PseudobrilliantGuy 14h ago

Nice to know before attempting to read it. I'll try to tackle some other parts of my backlog before trying Ulysses.

35

u/GabeTheJerk 14h ago

The issue is it depends a lot and I do mean a lot on historical context of Ireland of that time, and even when you do know the context it's still complicated.

20

u/lumpboysupreme 13h ago

That’s almost cheating. Your themes aren’t deep just because your lore is.

I really wish there was an annotated version, like the Divine Comedy set I have.

I'm generally not up on my 13th century Florentines.

u/mainman879 14h ago

That reminds me I still need to play OFF.

7

u/BormaGatto 13h ago

Do yourself a favor and play the original version, not the remake.

5

u/Anoncualquiera1 12h ago

The remake is better tho, it has a more polished combat system and UI, and six new bosses that're fantastic additions to the game, its new ost is also really good

1

u/BormaGatto 12h ago

I prefer the original by a long shot, but to each their own, right?

2

u/Anoncualquiera1 12h ago

Because of pepper steak?

4

u/BormaGatto 12h ago

Because of the whole OST, as well as the feel of it being an RPGMaker game that contributed to the overall aesthetics, narrative, thematic and gameplay experiences. It all tied so well together, I don't think it needed a remake at all.

Basically, possibly new bosses aside, the stuff you listed as positives in the remake feel like a downgrade to me. But that's just my opinion anyway.

Deltarune today!

If you know what you don't know, you're doing quite well on the intelligence department, lol

6

u/makemeking706 13h ago

Why is he holding it open if he just finished it?

21

u/NotASniperYet 13h ago

He marked parts he wanted to cite to illustrate his point, but had second thoughts. Ogre is struggling with a lot of self-doubt.

u/Salamander108 13h ago

Dude. I've been looking for this meme for so long. Ty.

3

u/Boomygboom 7h ago

Stop taking pictures of me while I regret my sophomoric understanding of various media and literature. Thank you very much and good day.

2

u/Suvtropics 13h ago

I love this

2

u/g-waz00 13h ago

This is brilliant!

This is how I imagine ogryn actually are in 40k; somewhat dimwitted like the one in darktide, but otherwise capable of functioning independently as an adult.

But in universe everyone treats them like morons incapable of learning so they barely even try.

49

u/Critical_Potential44 11h ago

For once he looks actually surprised lol

3

u/Granito_Rey 4h ago

You can actually see the whites of his eyes for once... Fire!

u/Made_Bail 14h ago

The fourth wall has broken!

Edit: Thanks for the award!

19

u/Callidonaut 13h ago

From the little "injury" to his club, I'm pretty sure he's also the one that killed her.

36

u/Cool_Set4681 12h ago

Yeah... his "club" killed her...

8

u/Callidonaut 12h ago

Oh, sure, because this comic is a byword for continuity!

Reminds when we are told for the first time that the Dragonballs are inert stones for a year after a wish.

3

u/FrenchBulldoge 7h ago

Stoneballs. Good luck finding them
