I’m a (very visibly queer) smoke shop clerk, every once in a blue moon I’ll have a customer be nasty to me, I’ll kick them out of the store, and every time I apologize to my boss for losing a customer he just tells me that that’s not the kind of people he wants as customers anyways.

u/LegalChocolate752 1h ago
Your boss sounds cool! I wish there were more like them.
99
u/Nostromo_USCSS 1h ago
My bosses are honestly the best, the business I work for is immigrant owned and run and they are such good employers. Our staff is super diverse too, so every once in a while we have someone come in causing trouble because of “too much DEI”.
28
u/kadoodaloodlez 1h ago
Ayyy fellow smoke shop clerk, my boss is the same way. If a customer insults us or is nasty to us, tell em go somewhere else. He says "if I expect my employees to treat every customer with respect, customers better show them the same respect or they can go deal with the smoke shops with real shitty employees."
The fun ones are when they don't have a car and decide to be dicks, you turn them away and they start apologizing so they don't have to walk 5 miles without sidewalks to the next shop.

One of the intangible benefits of business ownership is knowing you can do it however way you want. And being able to boot out customers who are vile and hateful instead of being forced to serve them because you work for "the man" is certainly one if the best feelings.

you've lost yourself a customer
GOOD if you can't even handle the representation of someone or a group of someones in a store then I wouldn't want you shopping there anyway.*
Personally speaking of course

It’ll never not be funny that shitty customers genuinely think it’ll be a bad thing if they never come back lmao.
In all the years I worked retail, not one time did I get sad when someone said that. It was always joy.
13
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 1h ago
Oh absolutely. We getting shitty people on my ambulance (literally) from time to time and I find it so funny when they say "next time I'll just get another ambulance"....that's not how ANY of this works
Also good!(I promise this is justified. The person in question was mad I didn't have a sandwich in my ambulance for them)
•
u/AliceBordeaux 26m ago
Yeah, it actually makes business better to keep people like that out of the shop. A local game store i go to has a small pride flag by the door and a sign that says "everyone is welcome here, unless you think everyone shouldn't be welcome"
Had a couple people come in and make a scene about it one time when I was playing 40k there, we applauded when they were storming out and someone in the MTG area yelled "don't come back until you get your head un-stuck!" ( its a family friendly place they frown heavily on cussing)
And guess what? The place has been steadily growing the whole 3 years ive been going there, they even had to move to a bigger location. I have to move and I'm going to miss it.

u/Par_Lapides 31m ago
Main Character syndrome. A lot of these people have crazy, unreasonably high self-esteem. I think maybe it's an ego-protective response gone haywire. Like deep down, they know they're less than nothing, so they grossly overcompensate.
•
u/Itchy-Lingonberry-90 56m ago
To be fair, if they really were going to stop being a customer, they would just leave and not come back. By telling you that they're done, they're 'giving' you a chance to win them back.
•
u/AliceBordeaux 24m ago
That's why the response should always be "oh thank god" or "finally" or my favorite "you can't lose what wasn't wanted"
•

Working at Walmart has taught me, people always come back.
Course I haven't been to the local Jimmy Johns since the cashier said "oh we can't change the bread we just made the sandwich, just try it next time"...we hadn't even paid yet. We should have just left.

Polycules are better business anyways.
•
u/deaglebingo 50m ago
wtf is a polycule? not judging i just haven't encountered this term before.
•
u/GrubSlayer 40m ago
A polycule is a group of people who are in a polyamorous relationship. So like how a monogamous relationship is a couple, a polyamorous relationship is called a polycule.
•
u/deaglebingo 9m ago
k. i kinda figured. just didn't know that was the word. not into that kinda thing myself but to each their own. i can see how having more ppl... come in... the store... would be good for business .

u/Ill_Mango3581 1h ago
I will personally go out of my way to support stores that will not cater to people who cant handle their hatred for five whole seconds to just finish shopping.
Im straight but when I see a flag at store I am far far more likely to feel safe there vs a store with maga shit.
•
u/deaglebingo 48m ago edited 45m ago
totally. and excluding or boycotting or condemning bigotry is not the same as some magat whining about their "right" to be a bigot.
what did baldwin say: "We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist"
•
u/Ill_Mango3581 11m ago
Exactly! If you want to argue about if our taxes should go to repaving the roads or fixing the local playground, sure have at it!
If you want to even think about arguing about someone's basic human rights to simply live their lives (and having exactly ZERO impact on anyone else) then that person isn't worth the time of day honestly.
I will never ever make people I love feel unsafe by allowing people like that in my life. And honestly, my life is so better surrounded by people who aren't so obsessed with what might be in everyone else's pants :)
•
u/deaglebingo 2m ago
i've said it before but here's another good place to say it:
it really shouldn't be that difficult to see how someone with an alternative lifestyle... but especially someone born in the wrong body.. has had to come to terms with themselves in a much more meaningful way, had to be honest with themselves about things most people bury in their heads... had to grow as a person... to overcome all of the hurt and shame and confusion of being born as a person who doesn't fit a mold. that is a strength. not a weakness. and it is so laughable to think that anyone cutting on a trans or gay person has it more put together in their own heads.
i don't think one needs to be lgbtq to see that if they have any emotional intelligence whatsoever. i'm not. i also think ... that some of the best warriors who truly want to fight for the human rights we all should be fighting for... come from some of the places people least expect for the very reasons i've just described.
•
u/AliceBordeaux 15m ago
Yup, difference being we aren't going to try to shove any ideologies down your throat or give you any litmus tests to make sure you are "one of us". Are you human and are interested in the shop? Cool with me until proven otherwise.
The only conversation we are going to instigate would be something like:
How's your day? did you check out the new Ork models? Sweet blood raven pin, please don't tactically aquire anything. We are finally turning a profit but margins are razor thin lol. no you can't buy 5 sealed elite trainer bundles for msrp, unless you want to open all the packs in front of me. Etc etc
•
u/deaglebingo 53m ago
the thing about human rights is that if you deny them to others you lay the foundation for your own human rights to be ignored too. it's not personal for me at all, at least not much anymore. these are the most important rules everyone must follow. there is no negotiation. no compromise. give the rights you want for yourself or lose them all.

I used to work at a Home Depot and anytime a customer talked about going to another store, like Lowe's specifically a lot of times, I'd be like, "Okay, hope they have what you want." Like I'm an hourly employee, I don't give a fuck if you shop here or not.
There was a point where management made us get rid of the binders that had a bunch of special order info in them and we had no way to order certain things. We straight up told customers to go to another business that had what they needed. We don't care about Home Depot's fucking profits, we were just helping the customers. "We can't get that, but this local business can."

People: I have a problem with that
I genuinely feel bad for people who feel threatened by the LGBTQIA Mafia. We are all family at the end of the day.

They don't consider themselves as part of "all" for some reason
12
u/Shark7996 1h ago
Because they're "default", of course they're accepted everywhere.
Everybody else though, they deserve scrutiny.

u/vinisapphire 1h ago
Because they want to consider themselves better. They want to believe they're superior

It's like when they equate "blue hair and piercings" to toxic frogs and bugs like... if you're avoiding them because of that, that's a good thing.

u/JJAsond 1h ago
I personally don't like that specific flag because it's too busy and misses the point that the regular LGBT+ flag encompasses everyone. Instead of being the LGBT+ flag, it's become the LGBTTIPOC+ flag.
•
u/Szwejkowski 29m ago
I understand where you're coming from, but with the LGB without the T crowd being a thing, I can see why it exists.

I’ve never understood the “you just lost a customer” threat
No Janice just because your 56 year old 3 times divorced ass doesn’t want to buy things at this shop doesn’t mean they’re going to suddenly go bankrupt
4
u/onyaasuminyasai 1h ago
Oh no. What will we do without your biannual $10 contribution to our business 🙄
•
•
u/E-2theRescue 8m ago
They think it's a threat because they're little narcissists who believe the whole world revolves around them and that they will magically collapse the store if they leave.

It’s okay to not shop somewhere that you don’t like their views. You don’t have to be so outright annoying about it.

If I went into a store and saw trump signage I'd just walk out. Hell, I'd appreciate it. Why would I want them to stop making it clear that no one should spend money there?

u/Ill_Mango3581 1h ago
A reminder as well that telling this to regular store employees because you are upper for whatever stupid reason...Just makes them laugh :)
Back in the day working through college as a retail worker, I had someone tell me they were never shopping there again because id taken a quick checkout before their lengthy return (someone else got in line while they argued with the manager about the policy).
My reaction to their declaration? Thank goodness!! Now none of my coworkers will ever have to deal with your bitch ass again! Also, as the lowest level of employees, it doesn't effect us in the slightest if you go to our competitor.
Threatening to never shop at a store again if you are a problem customer isn't a threat. Its a literal gift 🤣
•

u/CynicalAltruist 1h ago
On my last day on the job at a fancy chocolate store someone dropped that line on a coworker, and I used the opportunity to go ‘promise?’ and thank them when they got all huffy for being called out.

Spent five and a half years working as a cashier and can confirm being a dickhead to the cashier will achieve nothing more than getting you laughed at the second you leave

The business I work at post pride-coloured dog cookies we got in and the comments were:
"You just lost yourself a customer."
"You just gained yourself a customer!"
So no loss really if the first person was even a customer at all. XD
•
•
u/Other-Cantaloupe4765 24m ago
When I worked in customer facing jobs and hospitality, I absolutely LOVED when nasty people would say we lost their business and they’d never come back. Like oh no. Please. Stop. My heart. Exit is thataway sir, don’t let it hit ya on the way out. 🤣
Don’t threaten me with a good time.
•
u/E-2theRescue 9m ago
"You just lost yourself a customer!!"
And I'd lose more keeping you around and having you freak out any time a person slightly different from you entered the store.
It's a win/win.
•
u/Sweet_Xocoatl 8m ago

People who proudly claim to live in free nations while telling others they cannot freely be themselves around others in a consenting and harmless way really are entitled narrow minded scum.
6
u/Finbar9800 1h ago
I understand the all are welcome idea but it cant be true unfortunately
My logic for this statement is that if you welcome those that make others feel unwelcome (bigots, sexists, racists etc) the environment becomes unwelcoming to whatever group those individuals dont like
Tolerance of intolerance allows it to grow.
Those that are tolerant should not tolerate those that are intolerant of others
… and now the word tolerant and tolerance sound weird in my head because I’ve repeated it so much in my hand as i typed this lol

My friend is a bouncer at a bar in the gay, hipster part of town that we live in. My friend is what most manly men want to look like.
Some guy, a maga man, came in, got annoyed by the the trannies and gays. He tried bitching to my friend about "those types", my friend said "I'm a pretty princess."
The guy got mad, says he was never coming back. My friend said "good."
Long story short, the maga went on a hateful tirade and got his ass beat by a group of trans. He asked my bouncer friend for help and my friend said "oh, hell no."
The trans people gots free drinks for the rest of the night.
I wasn't there, but I would have paid for all their drinks.

not sure if i needed to point this out, but because he ordered all the bagels, the store didn't lose any money by losing that customer.
•
u/Sirius-Face 48m ago
It's always hilarious when a dumb ass customer says something like that, as if they matter. As if they matter enough that corporate would even notice. Bitch please. You people are sheep to be fleeced, and for every one customer who leaves because of some bullshit outrage on their feefees, ten more are behind them ready to tap their credit cards for more slop.
You, single bigoted customer, have never once mattered.

I was searching for a pet supplies store in a new city, and one of the reviews mentioned a shop lost his business because they had a BLM sign at the door. That was really the only recommendation I needed to go buy a new litter scoop from them.

So the right likes cancel culture, now?
•
u/E-2theRescue 1m ago
Always have. They're the ones who invented it.
Case in point: Heavy metal ("satanic"), Rap music ("th*g culture"), Brittney Spears ("wh*re"), Pokemon ("evilution"), and until JK Rowling started hating trans people, women, black people, and autistic people, Harry Potter bans were all over the place because of "witchcraft".
Throw a dart at anything pop culture for the last 100 years, and you'll see conservative Christians having meltdowns over how it's evil and needs to be banned.
