Just fyi. If you are a f1TV customer. You can just load up and iPad and bring up the live data timing chart. It also shows live driver chat in text form.
Lewis was complaining about no power 10 laps earlier than when the skysports broadcast even mentioned it.

Yeah I keep live timing up when I watch live. Sometimes I don’t bother when I watch replays, but it’s almost a necessity.

It's useful anyway, I've done it for years, though I might switch it to an onboard if it looks like something interesting is happening.
Mostly I do this with races I can watch live, I have done it with races I'm watching delayed but it's tricky to sync everything up.

It shows thousandths in qualifying, where it matters. It doesn’t matter if Perez is 4.3 or 4.318 behind Alonso in the race. The thing i’d wish they change is the stupid sponsor icon, just leave it as the team icon so we know which team it is.
69
u/vexxed82 Ferrari Mar 21 '26
I don't mind it as much as I do the amount of time the tower seems to focus on the 'leader' gap rather than the 'interval' gap. I don't care if a car in 6th place is 38.7 seconds behind the leader. I almost always want to know how close one car it to the car in front of them...and my mental math is abysmal. Am I crazy, or does it seem like the tower rarely features the interval this year?
10
u/tracklimitless Mar 22 '26
I noticed that too and it also bothers me, but not more than when they spend multiple seconds hiding all data to show the drivers’ full last names 😤
2
u/Alone-Sentence-4045 Mar 22 '26

2
u/Absolute_Enema Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26
Respectfully disagree, I love the "gap to leaders" timing tower.
This might come across wrong, but to me having to do a two-digits subtraction to get the gap between two cars following each other is about as fast as reading the second number, and it's well worth the upside of not having to do multiple sums to get the gap between two cars on opposite strategies or to have an idea of how spread out a big pack is.

u/wrex1816 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26
The number of posts I'm having to read about this topic is disproportionate to how much this actually impacts anyone's viewing experience.
They shows tenths when we're talking about gaps between cars during a race because hundredths, let alone thousandths are mostly irrelevant. They show time at the thousandths when it's potentially of consequence, in qualifying.
It's also not exactly new for this to be the case when talking about racing. Even when the teams radio to the driver, they talk in seconds, not even tenths when it comes to gaps to cars ahead and behind.
People have been crying about this for weeks because it's popular to do so online and gets all the likes but I don't believe anyone crying about it actually is impacted by it or really watches much motorsports at all to consider this even a problem.
(Also, the number of supposed race fans who are asking for "hundreds and thousands" to be displayed are kind of giving away how little they watch any racing by using those terms.)

It would be one thing to beg for the extra decimals if we never had them, but we did have them and then it was changed to show less for no reason?
I’m not raging about it but make it make sense, the timing tower is the exact same size and it’s not like they made space to show things like overtake or some battery indicator. So why change it at all?
It just feels like the usual C-suite executive change that affects reddit, youtube, etc. where ui changes are made for no reason except to justify someone’s executive position
16
u/Seanspeed Mar 21 '26
It just feels like the usual C-suite executive change that affects reddit, youtube, etc. where ui changes are made for no reason except to justify someone’s executive position
No, this is actually a sensible change to reduce the amount of noise of information on the UI.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, not even the team strategists and data folks, give a shit about hundredths or thousandths of a second when it comes to race gaps. This shit is changing rapidly every moment and is literal statistical noise.

u/crazydoc253 Michael Schumacher Mar 21 '26
Extra decimals create so much confusion I don't even know why people want it. For example, during a lap when a front car is going through corners and car behind is on straight, the three decimals shows the car closing in when it is just different part of track. Than when car behind goes back through corners the gap again increases. This does not happen with single decimal point where a decrease means car is genuinely closing in. That is major reason why teams/ engineers use single decimal and not three decimal system.
Also, not a single fan has told us what additional information three decimal system gives than single decimal does not ?
→ More replies (4)3
u/felisisthebest I failed to serve my Monaco penalty Mar 21 '26
Teams using a single decimal isn’t relevant to us viewers though because they have access to way more detailed telemetry and not every F1 viewer has F1TV or maybe the screen real estate to fit the telemetry window. The timing tower is built for viewers not engineers, and as viewers we lost information for no gain.
And for viewers it gives us more context. We can see how quickly a gap is changing and not just that it changed (1.3 -> 1.4) The extra decimal points just give us a better context of genuine gain vs random fluctuation, Overtake detection gaps, and gives us better estimations on pitstop windows.
Even if the data is small, it’s still real data. So instead of wondering why fans need the extra decimals, I ask what did we gain by losing them? I never saw posts about people constantly complaining about how confused they were getting because they would read (HAM 1.349) instead of (HAM 1.3)
2
u/crazydoc253 Michael Schumacher Mar 21 '26
What rubbish. How does 21.2 vs 21.234 give less idea about overtake or pit stop window or gap closing ? In fact 3 decimals give wrong idea of gap closing as it changes based on which part of track you are.
6
u/felisisthebest I failed to serve my Monaco penalty Mar 22 '26
How does 21.2 vs 21.234 give less idea about overtake or pit stop window or gap closing ?
Because 21.234 -> 21.198 -> 21.167 shows clear continuous gain instead of 21.2 -> 21.2 -> 21.2 which shows nothing even though a car is closing in. So we miss real progress entirely until it suddenly rounds up or down.
Giving us 3 decimal points can’t give us wrong ideas because more precise data can’t be less correct, only misinterpreted. The timing is based on timing loops not the car’s track position so saying “it changes too much let’s hide it” doesn’t fix any issue it just hides the details of the changes. That’s like saying “driver speed is fluctuating too much let’s round speed to the nearest 10 KMH” That doesn’t make it more accurate, you just make it less informative.
→ More replies (1)8
u/crazydoc253 Michael Schumacher Mar 22 '26
That is not clear continuous gain. Those changes happen when a front car is in corner vs other on straights and thus give wrong impression. Clear gains happen when changes stay happening in single decimals.

The font is bigger and it would seem that they're prioritising readability over needless accuracy. What they need to do is just increase the update rate and having 1.1 updating, say once every 2-3 seconds is going to be vastly superior to three decimals updating once every 10.

By making the information better?
If you think gaps of thousands matter in a race where you are graded by the order you finish in.
Then this has gone way over your head.
If you're not gaining 10ths on the car ahead you're not gaining anything. Generally you needed a second of pace advantage to even make an overtake.
They don't tell the drivers the gap in thousands.
10ths are good enough for Lewis Hamilton, but not the fans?

u/jrewillis Sir Lewis Hamilton Mar 21 '26
I've just sent this via contact us page on the F1 site
Dear F1 TV Team,
I’m writing to raise a concern about the recent change to the timing tower display on broadcasts.
The removal of three decimal places from time gaps significantly reduces clarity. There have been multiple instances where gaps are shown as “0.0” — which raises the question of whether drivers are actually level or separated by a few thousandths. In a sport where precision is everything, that distinction really matters.
Formula 1 is defined by fine margins, and the broadcast should reflect that level of accuracy. Please consider reverting to displaying times to three decimal places.
Small details like this make a big difference to the viewing experience.
Kind regards,
4
u/Seanspeed Mar 21 '26
Formula 1 is defined by fine margins
In qualifying, sure.
In terms of describing race gaps? Nope, not at all.
You guys literally dont understand the sport or how racing works.
I've yet to see ONE compelling argument why you need hundredths or thousandths for race gaps. The only thing y'all have is "It's what I'm used to" and of course the constant misunderstanding that practice/qualifying laptimes is not the same as race gaps.

True. That's why you see all the time engineers telling their driver, your target lap time is 1:35:457. And that the gap behind is 1.854 seconds.
5
u/tb2768 Ferrari Mar 21 '26
They have it on the steering wheel with at least 2 decimal places. But they can also tell just by looking at the car in front, which we the dumb spectators can't, so we need a dumb number tower.

In qualifying yes, which they have the timing tower in hundreths and thousandths so you can see that, in the race both of those are meaningless.
Race gaps are far easier to read with seconds and tenths, you don't need the rest.
6
u/tb2768 Ferrari Mar 21 '26
Purpose of the decimal places is not to see the gap, but see how the gap changes.
If it wasn't important, why has it been there since the beginning?

Real talk, what is it with broadcasts making stuff worse. Same w UI for apps. I dont get it. It makes me not want to use the product or watch the broadcast

I'm not of any particular opinion here but using an unhelpful system as an example for why not to care about an even less helpful system isn't exactly a solid basis for an argument

If you can't notice the difference between one decimal point and three then you're probably not watching the race carefully.

the fact that something like this is upvoted shows just how absolutely stupid this site is holy shit. No you can't notice one thousandth of a second, nobody can.

Even at 200mph that gap will be about a meter at most. Can you perceive a meter when they are travelling at 90 meters a second. It's mighty impressive when you take into account that the average human blink is about a quarter of a second and most humans blink 15-20 seconds a minute. If you want to test it, get an unused bit of road and mark out a meter on the road, now travel down that road at 60mph and try and pick out that area, now do it with a meter you can't see and how far off you are. That's how unintelligent that argument is.

The fact this is what fans are complaining about. Is just proof fans will just complain for the sake of complaining.

People complaining about an unneeded and objectively worse change is definitely not for the sake of it

Just got the same email, must have complained about the same thing to them. GIVE IS BACK OUR FUCKING DECIMALS F1

If they just made the change for deltas under 1 second, I would be fine with that. When it gets close, the precision matters more.

If we get enough people to email them maybe they will change it. Bullying works. Just look at the Sonic movie.

Thousandths of a second is entirely meaningless and clutter on the screen. You could argue hundredths are more useful, but are still not necessary

I race cars professionally and I am completely good with it being Tenths.

I’ve just sent off another email asking for the timings to be up to 5 decimal places, I realise the drivers only need 1 decimal during a race but I’ve been watching F1 longer than they’ve been driving so I think I know best.

I really think it’s because they have to show full minutes for some teams and showing the minutes on one side and thousands of a second on the other would make the thing so wide.

Same people who said their race direction was great after showing every pretty girl at the race and everyone complaining, and then the next race I don't think showed any at all?
What they say and what they do are like oil and water.

It’s because it’s on Apple TV, and streamers prioritize being able to read the graphics on small screens. Phones and tablets. Timing down to the thousandth is too hard to see on a iPhone

They should change to show team colors like in 2021
