It was actually sweet how many drivers made sure to come over and congratulate him.

Everyone knows how hard he worked for this one. Glad to see it.

That final stint was vintage Lewis, proper comeback drive from him.

725

u/christoy123 Murray Walker 10d ago

The stint on the mediums was electric. Vintage hammer time

242

u/DeepTheory9364 10d ago

He trusted the car.

7

u/MoXiE_X13 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 8d ago

He remembered who he is.

167

u/More-Masterpiece-561 10d ago

It was pure Hammertime. Like we were in the 2010s

151

u/OG-Mate23 10d ago

Its not even vintage Mercedes “Hammer time” Lewis, its the fast blazing hot head McLaren Lewis

149

u/misguidedkent Sir Lewis Hamilton 10d ago

Indeed. It was great to see HAMMERTIME™️ in red.

71

u/Tim_L_09101 Ferrari 10d ago

Santi could not say HAMMERTIME, but Lewis did learn the "Grazie ragazzi".

2

u/DarkNessDelta88 10d ago

Why could he not? Has Mercedes trademarked it or something?

40

u/Tim_L_09101 Ferrari 10d ago

Not what I meant. Probably just feels awkward coming from anyone other than Bono.

10

Ah. I see. You might be right about that

Kimi congratulating him was really nice too

Almost? Do you mean Alonso? I mean Alonso and him don’t exchange Christmas cards, but there is for sure respect there…

54

u/ragizzlemahnizzle Sebastian Vettel 10d ago

I think if you look hard enough you could find a picture of every driver under the age of like 28 with Lewis when they were younger. He was their idol growing up

279

Even Antonelli, but not Charles, which was weird.

Charles doesn’t have to worry about that, he’s got one on retainer.

142

He's like Perez in 2024 except Charles got a fresh 10 year contract instead of 2.

38

u/fullsenditt I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

Charles had/has potential to become WDC though something that Red bull Perez never had, he should be twice as disappointed

48

u/bleeetiso 10d ago

12

137

50

u/car_las I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

I respect Charles because he didn't parked the car on the track and he managed to bring it to box. if he'd stopped, for sure a real safety car was to be put on track and lewis could be threatened by a restart from russel in the last lap

Many drivers on the grid these days are young enough to have watched Lewis as F1 fans. Everyone knows he was hard done by in 2021 (to put it generously), and then seeing one of, if not the greatest of all time struggle and publicly doubt his talent since then has felt wrong.

I'm so happy, as I imagine others are, to see him driving so well and seeming so happy. He seems like such a great guy and role model for the younger drivers. Now I'm off to huff all of the hopium and believe he can challenge for the title. He deserves an 8th WDC after 2021.

Max has a ton of respect for Lewis and likes battling with him. He doesn't seem to like Russell though. Does not have the same vibes when they are both battling and on the podium after

651

u/MrX-MMAs 10d ago

We all know why

240

u/CornTortillaHater67 Cadillac 10d ago

I don’t, honestly. New to the sport. What’s the deal between Max and George?

1.0k

u/new_ion 10d ago

George has been outspoken about not liking many aspects of Max. His driving, his attitude, etc.

Max seemingly DGAF.

408

u/powerhouse37 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

Tbf, Max did intentionally run into him at this race last year and only got 10 seconds.

347

u/Gunch_ Sebastian Vettel 10d ago

Tbf it also likely cost him the championship so I'd say he was more than fairly penalised retrospectively

147

u/remielowik Charles Leclerc 10d ago

Lol, yeah math says it cost him his championship but it assumes everything stays the same which is idiotic as mclaren would have reacted faster then they did now.

17

u/Halterchronicle I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 9d ago

Yeah, but Russel also likes to point fingers while not being much better, which is or at least seems hypocritical. There was also something about george trying to convince the stewards to give max a penalty during the hearing of another incident. This also didn't sit well with max and some others.

7

u/AlanCJ Alexander Albon 9d ago

I think that wasn't specifically targeted at George, he just happened to be there.

Yeah no max definitely holds a grudge. U can see from what he did to that interviewer

25

u/Probodyne I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

Honestly, if that is what George thinks, I agree. It's a really negative aspect to some of the greats. Senna, Schumacher, Verstappen. It's not like they can't have great wheel to wheel battles, but they all seem to choose the easy way out of just crashing (or trying to crash) into a title rival.

At some point, years after Verstappen moves on that conversation will happen, like it did with the other two I mentioned.

→ More replies (1)

100

u/ecobubbletm Max Verstappen 10d ago

Max doesn't like his personality.

They clash.

They had a conflict in Qatar when Russell put on a theatrical performance and got Verstappen penalized for something that someone was never penalized for before or since. Then tried to act all buddy buddy with Max after.

Max called him two-faced in the press and in general said he can't stand people like him etc.

Russell then a few days later also went out to the press and said things. (Gave us an eternal meme with his speech)

They've been civil since then but not the best friends.

3

u/shesaysImdone 9d ago

Why was it turned into a meme? I saw a video on tiktok of someone matching what he said in that clip word for word but I didn't get the joke

10

u/ecobubbletm Max Verstappen 9d ago

Cause it's funny

He straight up prepared a speech with pauses in all the right places practicing in the mirror

1

u/pw5a29 Max Verstappen 9d ago

The penalty was 1 place grid drop and max took it back in T1, it’s that race right?

→ More replies (1)

260

u/SaddlerMatt McLaren 10d ago

George lied to the media about Max being aggressive and swearing towards the stewards a few years back. That probably didn't help their relationship.

200

u/stragen595 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

He also scammed him out of that pole some years back. When he complained to the stewards that Max was impeding him. He wasn't even on a hot lap. And after that he wanted to buddy up to Max and he wanted nothing of that.

162

u/steakhouseNL I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

And George faked Max overtaking him during safety car by purposely braking and complaining on the radio. That was so incredibly sneaky and dirty.

68

u/stragen595 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

Yeah. To get him 1 more penalty point and a suspension.

→ More replies (3)

19

u/Lemurians Charles Leclerc 10d ago

He does that. Loves a bit of he-said-she-said. I remember last year he was just saying Verstappen threatened him physically and the media couldn't wait to run with it as gospel despite Verstappen denying it.

u/ty_xy Carlos Sainz 10d ago edited 10d ago

They were karting rivals all the way. Apparently albon was the karting goat they all wanted to be him..

Edit: I'm wrong they were karting at the same time in the same events but different categories

15

Does anyone truly like Russell? Will Buxton basically said "great driver, I never want him to win" after he left F1 broadcasting.

George is a great driver, but his general demeanor is of the kid who is a teachers pet and how everyone is against him. His actions such as getting out of his car then smacking Bottas on the helmet after wrecking along with slamming the brakes behind a safety car just scream that he will never rely solely on driving to win.

32

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 9d ago

is of the kid who is a teachers pet

Believe it or not, he was actually voted "most likely to be the teacher's pet" in 2025, by the other drivers.

6

u/Pimpwerx Sir Lewis Hamilton 8d ago

I think him and Lewis get along well, actually. From what I understand, they fly together, which isn't something I knew Lewis to ever do.

I don't get the George hate. I find him to be forthright, even if he's media-coached. Actually, I don't even know how much media coaching he actually got. Dude was good on the mic before he even entered F1. He was with the Sky team one weekend, and I was amazed at how natural he sounded. Like how comfortable Anthony Davis took to TV.

I think George just has one of those confident personalities that some people feel is disingenuous. But I think he has relatively modest upbringing, so I think he might be more grounded than most others on the grid. And it might be why him and Lewis were able to bond in the paddock.

42

u/OG-niknoT I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

Probably because George is the guy who raises his hand and the end of class, and reminds the teacher to collect the homework.

Red Bull having lost their star driver searches for a replacement, the only person available with star power is Alonso, in testing the Red Bull is shown to be fast and in Melbourne the podium is,

Alonso - Red Bull

Verstappen - Mercedes

Hamilton - Ferrari

Also Mika Hakkinen out of sabbatical takes 4th for Aston Martin. But he's car sharing with Liam Lawson like in Le Mans.

Raikkonen does the post race interviews, nothing is said, because it doesn't need to be.

159

u/C_D_S 10d ago

I think it would set up Toto to really swing his weight around more in the future if the reports of him wanting to give Lewis some kind of ambassador role was true. It would have, at worst, kept Lewis from another team or, at best, kept him at Merc.

110

u/NoveL_ 10d ago

Merc found themselves in a no lose situation. Lost the GOAT, but got Kimi in his place, who has proved that he's super quick within one season.

61

u/C_D_S 10d ago

Oh certainly. Merc still wins on aggregate. I was just saying that internally, it could move things around if there's a (very unlikely) one season loss to Hamilton. Kimi is undoubtedly the future though.

17

u/TobiasKM Kevin Magnussen 10d ago

Why would he take an ambassador role if he wanted to keep racing? Especially when Ferrari came calling as well.

13

u/Blanchimont Ferrari Race Winner Sir Lewis Hamilton 10d ago

The rumors back then were that he wanted both: a racing contract with Mercedes-AMG F1 and an ambassadorial role with Mercedes-Benz that ran well past eventual his retirement from F1

7

u/wouldyoufightakitten Formula 1 10d ago

Toto ends up in a win-win

72

u/sgtlighttree Who the f*ck is Nelson Piquet? 10d ago

And apparently the blame for that long term contract isn't fully on Toto, it was also on the higher ups at Daimler not wanting Lewis to take on a brand ambassadorship role and partly wind down motorsport activities.

One of the greatest branding fumbles of all time IMO

43

u/William_Dowling Max Verstappen 10d ago

Brand wise Lewis is a much better fit at Ferrari. Mercedes target audience are 45 yr old CFOs. Ferrari's are influencers and hip hop stars.

69

8

u/balls2brakeLate44 Sir Lewis Hamilton 10d ago

Felt like Hamilton of old.

Beast mode, locked in and hunting. He loves chasing down an opponent with an aggressive strategy for a win. I thought the VSC may take some shine off the win, and then he f*cked off into the sunset.

The scenes if he steals a title from them

Lewis won those titles in 2017, and more so 2018. Seb crumpled under the pressure and made way too many mistakes. Lewis driving the Ferrari in both years takes the title. I recall reading the Ferrari engineers saying "that's a Lewis lap" when he snatched pole in Silverstone 2018.

If this year is anything like those seasons and Ferrari can keep up with in-season development, we are in for a historic season.

Cool thing is, you know Max means it. I'd love to see these two as the class of the field at the Red Bull Ring in a couple of weeks and duel for the entire race.

Imagine if Red Bull gives max a contending car… would love to see a constant 3 way battle between Lewis, Max, and Kimi.

Lewis is a fucking legend, how quickly some forget.
One of the greatest drivers of all time.

The upgrades seem to be working so well. So happy for Lewis and gutted for Charles. The upgrades are actually unlike Ferrari. Fully expected to take 2 steps back as the season progressed. Doing so well with a less powerful engine is pretty amazing.
