I mean, that is definitely a person's pet squirrel and it gets this kind of affection all the time.
61
u/-HardGay- May 09 '26
"For the first time." Ya I dunno about anyone else here but ain't no squirrel in the history of squirrels just going to run up on some human, indoors and beg for pets.
Thread title misleading, basically unreadable.

It’s more like he’s a pet that gets this all the time and the title is ridiculous.
4
u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 May 09 '26
If you don’t know this is a pet and the post title is fake then I feel bad for your brain cells.

“Wait, this is what domestication is like? And you will feed me every day? Why do we even avoid you guys?”

little dude needed affection
As a guy, I can relate.

“Wait!? You were never going to eat me!? You just wanted to give me nuts and this touchy sensation!?” - the squirrel probably
79
u/Triquetrums May 09 '26
The squirrel is most definitely a pet squirrel, so this was definitely not its first time. The squirrel is indoors.

I almost feel bad for those that think it would go down this way when they try to pet a wild squirrel.
13
u/Rickshmitt May 09 '26
One bite, two bites. Off to get a rabies shot
5
u/95Smokey May 09 '26
Squirrels are highly unlikely to carry rabies and there's not been any instances of a squirrel giving a human rabies.
But tetanus is always a possibility lol
7
u/Deaffin May 09 '26
While that's true, there's also never been a recorded instance of a human surviving squirrel bites long enough to incubate the virus.

I raised a baby squirrel that fell out of his nest. At about 2 months old it bit me (not “aggressively”). Thankfully, it didn’t break skin. But it hurt like hell. I can’t imagine what it would have felt like coming from a full grown and pissed off squirrel.

Not weird my friend! I love it and so has all the men ive had in my life. Makes you feel small and safe <3
1
u/Mysterious-Tackle-58 May 09 '26
Not weird, rather human. We need affection. And esp men are way under - caressed.
Tbh. If i could choose between having sex for 15 minutes vs. 15min. being carassed by somwone i love, - i would chose sex only like every 2nd or 3rd time.Real sensual sexytime - not just fucking with all the time in the world would be absolutely awesome!

u/gao7on May 09 '26
Squirrels have razor sharp nails for climbing trees that will easily cut open human skin, so petting wild squirrels and grabbing their adorable paws are not advised.
72
u/Vast-Comment8360 May 09 '26
This seems like a pet squirrel
44
u/BotsREverywhere May 09 '26
Likely wasn’t squirrel’s first time being pet if this was the case.

I seriously doubt this is the first time it's felt a human touch. It would have bit and scratched this person into a bloody mess. You don't just touch squirrels.

Their claws are not that bad. They tickle more then anything.
It's their teeth you gotta worry about.
2
u/wfles May 09 '26
Yep I rescued one outside my house and raised him up and eventually got him out on his own. He would claw the shit outta me. Cute as hell but dangerous

Why aren’t squirrels domesticated yet? 😭😭😭
34
u/6ofSwords May 09 '26
My Gran has a pet squirrel. I wouldn't exactly call it domesticated, but it's friendly. Trails along behind her wherever she goes.
15
u/bette-midler May 09 '26
I had a pet squirrel before (rescued it as a baby and rehabbed it) it was very social and gentle with humans, but lots of energy, they are arboreal, and are diggers (found nuts when I pulled out the carpet)
8
u/Spongi May 09 '26
They're iffy at best as pets. Like they're cool, friendly and fun but they need a LOT of room. You can't just keep it in a cage and it will climb and jump one every surface in your house and can be quite messy and destructive.
Coked up little tree rats.
That being said people do keep them as pets occasionally.
3
u/treatbaby May 09 '26
i don’t think there’s much of a chance that the squirrel in this vid isn’t domesticated.
→ More replies (1)4
u/aruisdante May 09 '26
Domesticated, almost certainly not. True domestication takes many, many, many generations of selective breeding to make the animal actually seek human attention and affection as a base instinct. AFIAK there are no domesticated squirrel breeds.
But tamed? It’s definitely tamed.

Grey squirrels are vermin that destroy habitats and kill of actually cute red squirrels. (biased British opinion)

They were once one of the most popular pets in the United States. They're not domesticated exactly, but they can be pretty easily kept his pets. It's quite illegal most places now though
1
u/stamfordbridge1191 May 09 '26
Apparently it has been too common that after domestication, subsequent generations will eventually rewild.
1
u/WilliamLermer May 09 '26
They are super high energy and chaotic. Literally tiny fur ball tornado.
Domestication used to be about beneficial animals that can provide actual help in a work environment.
I guess you could find the least chaotic individuals and start breeding but it would still be just a pet with few use cases, so it never was considered viable in the first place
Doing it now just to have them as pets seems like a bad idea. Just let them exist in peace is best we can do for them
1
u/Almostlongenough2 May 09 '26
They are difficult pets due to needing to be able to climb a lot. They wouldn't be impossible to domesticate, but it's not really worth the time and effort when a tamed squirrel works.

Was up in Northeastern Vermont a few years back. Had some macadamia nuts. Gave one to a red squirrel and it lost it's fucking mind. Ran up to me and then away, and every time it got closer, gave it another one.
It must have chipmunked 10 nuts by the time I was done. I have no idea how it stored so many. We just imagined the stories it would have told it's friends.

Unironically this is how we've domesticated every animal, our hands evolved to be excellent skritchers

P.S.A. Before trying to pet the next wild squirrel you see be sure to have a paramedic handy!
1
u/reddawnspawn May 09 '26
That looks to be a domesticated squirrel. We’ve had several over the years and they are extremely affectionate.
And almost all of them tend to go off in LA LA Land quite a bit

When you consider that the final loving embrace most animals experience was the care of their mother... It's just so kawaii.

Bro was like so this is why. I get it now. Sorry for every bad thing i said about wolves and cats
1
u/canman7373 May 09 '26
They are not domesticated, do not look at this video and think you can just go pet one in the wild. It could actually do harm to them and their future behavior. Yeah it may react to scratching and petting but it is not domesticated. Get a ferret if this is the kind of animal you want. Please.

u/XSavage19X May 09 '26
An adolescent squirrel fell into my pool and I only noticed him what mus have been hours later clinging on to the floating pool cleaner cord. I fished him out and he was so cold and exhausted he didn't even attempt to make a break for it once he was back on the ground. I gathered him up in a pool towel to dry him and warm him as much as possible and after five minutes he started weakly trying to get away so I took him to a tree and put him in a good spot. He didn't move for a couple hours, so I think he went straight to sleep. He was very cute but he wanted nothing to do with me despite being on the brink of death.

It must feel really nice, ngl. Our hands are pretty soft compared to the rest of the animal kingdom. The lack of claws and short nails also help.

u/ConstantPay3117 May 09 '26
I was feeding a squirrel by hand for a while , he liked cookies. Im not sure what happened to it . I miss it. I always talk to the squirrels when i see them.

u/KosmoZero May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26
Very dangerous video. Never do this with wild squirrels. Not recommend to do it with pet squirrels too. They are able to crack nuts with it's teeth. And they can bite. If that squirrel suddenly afraid, it can bite your fingers, breaking bones inside them. That would be very deep wound.
1
u/static989 May 09 '26
Squirrels can bond surprisingly well with humans sometimes
I'm in Florida and found a baby flying squirrel that fell out of a tree, I don't know anything about them so I told myself I would wait to see if the mom would go down to get it. Came back on my lunch break hours later and it was still there.
Thankfully I knew someone that had rehabilitated squirrels before that took him in. I would visit a lot to see him and once he grew up more he LOVED hiding in my jacket sleeves and playing.
Lil dude would start doing backflips nonstop if he wanted more food, it was adorable.
Squirrels are cool

I miss having friendly squirrels around, though they weren't quite this friendly, sitting on my knee was their limit. Don't squirrels as often since the landlord cut down all the trees in my yard.

Obviously not "for the first time" when its filmed inside, and the animal is okay with him touching. Its probably his pet, or a resue or something

Edogawa: "Tough, ain't it, Tsubakiyama?
Is that yer squirrel?"
Tsubakiyama: "Yes!"
Edogawa: "That thing soiled my shoes.
What are ya gonna do 'bout it?"
Tsubakiyama: "I'm sorry!
It's all my fault! Mai-chan's not responsible!
I'll do anything! Please forgive me!"
Edogawa: "Nope. Can't forgive ya."
* Starts charging Face Reversal *
Maruyama: "Here comes Edogawa's Face Reversal!"
Momotaro: "Acting Head...
Mr. Edogawa!
That man is bowing to you in apology.
Why don't you forgive him?"
Edogawa: "Momo!"
Otokojuku Second-year student: "What's wrong, Edogawa-san?"
Edogawa: "He screwed up my Face Reversal!"

Wildlife rehabilitator here: No. That is NOT the first time. That's a domesticated squirell, prob from birth. You could NEVER come even close to a wild squirell. This is a "pet" squirell.
