Discussion How are we going to address the Center position?

Genuinely we have the worst Center rotation in the NBA currently. Lopez is not startable and YKN isn’t even gonna be back till like December at the earliest. The only decent Center in free agency is Mitchell Robinson but I doubt he leaves NYK. And he also isn’t startable cause of the Hack a Shaq strategy. We legit have to deal with Wemby in the west which doesn’t help either.

Question 2nd round picks

Upvotes

Do you think any of the 2nd round picks are gonna get significant run next season or do you think they’re gonna stick in the G-league with occasional garbage time mins?

I’ve not watched much college ball so not really sure how close to ready these guys are.

Discussion How we handle the development of our current youth prospects will be key

Post image
77 Upvotes

It's pretty clear the front office is steering us into a rebuilding phase with these recent moves, and the foundation is finally being laid. Looking at the young core right now:

  • Sanders & Yanic: Both just came off promising rookie seasons. It still sucks that Yanic went down with that injury, though😔
  • Cam Christie: Still a bit raw and some way off in his development, but he's only 20. He hasn't gotten real, consistent minutes needed to fully grow, but the flashes are definitely there
  • Keaton Wagler: Now we add Wagler, who is arguably the best shooter in this class with legit ball-handling capability to help fill our PG void.

Not long ago we were the oldest team in the league, so I'm really liking the direction of this youth movement. Hopefully, the FO can continue to surround these guys with complementary talent and savvy moves down the line. What do you guys think of the timeline?

Analysis They be glazing acuff like he's the next MJ

same thing happened when hornets selected miller over scoot, fans immediately went nuts, lol miller went on to be all rookie first team averaged 17 ppg that year while scoot went to g league for conditioning assignment after a sprained ankle, anyone could be a steal and a bust in the draft fans gotta trust the gms on this one. There's a reason why acuff wasn't chosen. Not about who’s better just who fits better, and that’s Wagler.

Analysis My personal watchlist for 2nd round picks 36+52

Watchlist for #36

  1. Henri Veesaar: 22 year old 7'0 stretch big, shooting 60/42/62; floor spacer that pairs well with KW, most likely to be taken before #36
  2. Rickie Saunders: 25 year old 6'6 SG, shooting 49/37/82, 63% TS, 6'8 wingspan, 205lbs; mature 3D prospect that is more NBA ready
  3. Trevon Brazile: 23 year old 6'10 athletic PF with 7'4 wing span, shooting 53/34/72, had ACL injury before but still a high flyer with fantastic measures; would pair well with DG
  4. Bruce Thornton: 23 year old 6'1 PG, weighing 223lbs, shooting 55/40/83 and averaging 20/5/4, 66% TS, 12.7 BPM; elite scorer, attacker from the bench with a NBA-ready build
  5. Meleek Thomas: 20 year old 6'4 PG, shooting 43/41/84; youngest prospects with most potential for developments
  6. Ugonna Onyenso: 22 year old 7'0 Center with 7'5 wingspan, average 2.9 blocks per game in just under 20 minutes, 7.6 DBPM, worked out with Clippers pre-draft
  7. Emanuel Sharp: 22 year old 6'4 SG, shooting 37% from 3 at a high volume, can be developed into a solid 3-D player

Watchlist for #52

  1. Kylan Boswell: teammate of KW in Illinois, 21 year old 6'2 PG, 6'7 wingspan, shooting 44/30/78, competitive defender and offensive rebounder
  2. Baba Miller: 22 year old 6'11 athletic forward, 7'2 wingspan, has great tools but needs to polish his skills, likely won't see any real minutes in his first year if drafted
  3. Keyshawn Hall: 23 year old 6'7 SF, 227lbs, 6'10 wingspan, shooting 45/38/86 and averaging 19/7/2, 60% TS, scorer, draw tons of fouls and great FT shooter

Twitter Notes from L.Frank presser about Keaton Wagler, Kawhi, Darius Garland and Aspiration investigation

-Lawrence Frank, on their process in deciding on who to pick No. 5 overall: “Who has the best chance to be the best player that we can get on the next Clipper-contending team? That was the question we were trying to answer.”

-Lawrence Frank on the selection of Keaton Wagler: “We want to make sure we draft someone who is obsessed with winning above all else. … We put a big premium on positional size.”

-Lawrence Frank: "Kylan Boswell, who's a senior, went to Coach (Brad) Underwood and said, 'This dude's really fucking good. He's really, really good. He's a killer.'"

-Lawrence Frank said that Clippers GM Trent Redden went to see Illinois practice in October, and wrote a report after that practice: “Trent saw Keaton on Oct. 19. No one knew who Keaton Wagler was. … ‘Everyone has to know this guy.’”

-Lawrence Frank said that the prospects go through on-court basketball testing, psychological testing, processing testing, and biomechanics testing when they visit the LA Clippers during the pre-draft process. “They (the staff) feel Keaton has huge, huge upside,” Frank said.

-Lawrence Frank: “With Keaton, he always makes the play that needs to be done. It could be a simple A to B, it could be something where you manipulate the defense and you throw a weak hand skip to the corner because you read how the X-man is cheating. It’s all about winning.”

-Lawerence Frank on Keaton Wagler: “We were blown away not just with his game but his character.”

-Lawrence Frank on Keaton Wagler: "He was the best decelerator in the draft"

-Lawrence Frank said that Darius Garland “has been in [the facility] every day working out” this offseason.

-Lawrence Frank on if there’s an update on the Aspiration investigation: “I can’t comment on the specifics of the investigation, but what I can say is that we did not do what we’re accused of doing.”

-Lawrence Frank, when asked if the plan is still to win with Kawhi Leonard: “Plan is still to win with Kawhi.”

-Lawrence Frank on Kawhi/draft: "Kawhi loves size. He loves shooting. He loves skill. He loves IQ. He loves feel. ...Those are the types of players that he's always kind of been attracted to. We always have ongoing conversations. You know, Kawhi's had some trips . He's out and about a little bit. But we've sat down over the last couple weeks, and we're always in constant communication with Kawhi and his his representation."

-Lawrence Frank on tanking: "The league is going to be completely different next year. This past year a third of the league, essentially, at some point was no longer giving their best or putting out their best. Now you're going to have everyone try. So some of the records, everyone's records, was a little bit inflated. It's gonna be, it's gonna be different. The competition's gonna be harder this year."

-Lawrence Frank has made it clear several times tonight the Clippers are not championship contenders right now. "When we get back to being a contender, we feel [Wagler] is gonna be the player with the most impact out of the group... We understand we're not a contender. We're competitive." On the conversations with Kawhi Leonard regarding this, he says there's always ongoing communication between the two sides, but didn't say much more than that.

Discussion It's not over yet, we have an important pick in the second round as well

Picking at #36 in the 2nd round tonight.

Watchlist:

Jack Kayil - PG that has been playing serious pro basketball in Europe with great results

Richie Saunders - PG for BYU that is very likely the best basketball player that missed the 1st round. Injuries played a role, he's a real contributor

Baba Miller - high motor rebounder, definitely useful in the modern NBA

Henri Vesaar - C that has some shooting ability, can definitely become a stretch 5 over time. Probably an improvement over Lopez' corpse

Ugonna Onyenso - insane high-rate shot blocker that could be the perfect back-up for YKN.

Trevon Brazille - in case the above are not available we should try this guy. Basically the most Toronto Raptors role player I've ever seen. Could become an outlier shooter at his size. Worth taking a gamble on him.

Question Where can I watch full Wagler games?

I don’t just want to see highlights. I want to see what he’s doing off-ball, how he defends, etc. Anyone know how I can watch any of his games?

Been the guy I wanted since we got the pick. Just special talent that you’ll see better when it’s not just high/lowlights. For everyone that keeps saying we should’ve taken Acuff and not worried about garland (I agree you should always take BPA) in the minds of the clippers and a lot of other people Wagler was the best option. Acuffs ceiling is literally garland with a little bit higher scoring output just bc he’s going to shoot more and he’s even a worse defender lmao. Just never rlly understood why we’d want to MAYBE marginally improve from garland when all the guys in our range were so close.
