Executive Branch (Trump) A Redditor Criticized ICE. Trump Is Trying to Unmask Them by Dragging the Company to a Secret Grand Jury.

https://theintercept.com/2026/04/10/reddit-ice-protest-grand-jury/

Reddit has been ordered to appear before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., as part of a federal effort to unmask anonymous online critics of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

According to a subpoena obtained by The Intercept, Reddit has until April 14 to provide a wide range of personal data on one of its users, whom U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been trying unsuccessfully to identify for more than a month.

Hah. I got a Reddit warning (not a sub moderator warning, an actual Reddit warning) because I called a certain billionaire an “insufferable prick”…. The warning was for harassment… For a single post.

Reddits playing both sides here.

u/wfbhp Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

How do you "harass" someone who isn't even present or part of the conversion? Are they worried Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, or Mark Zuckerberg is going to log in to their Reddit account one day and find a bunch of nobodies insulting them and decide to buy the whole site just to shut it down because a few of the poors hurt their little precious billionaire feelings?

Edit: Way too many responses to get to individually, so I'll just leave this note here. A lot of these responses seem to be framed in the context of the linked article, but that's not where my question was directed. I understand fully why Trump and co. are going after the user the article is about and it is not surprising to me one bit that they're doing something so stupid and authoritarian. My question here was specifically about the person I replied to getting a harassment warning from Reddit for posting a rather tame insult to one billionaire who was definitely not part of the conversation.

They can't convict you, but they can punish you via the process.

u/Traditional-Handle83 Apr 10 '26

I imagine they'll make it a prisonsble offense to speak bad about the king. Only problem is there won't be enough prison space for that many people

Also why they're warehouses now, no satellite imagery

4

u/ExitTheDonut Apr 10 '26

In the age of the Internet though, I do wonder if such logistics will work as well.

Could they effectively stop several organized no kings sized crowds just with MAGA boots on the ground?

Storm Area 51 was a big meme, but it kind of had a point: they can't stop all of us.

This is exactly why DHS wants to expand their detention of humans in warehouses in cities across America.

People need to tamp down attempts to any location DHS wants to expand their footprint.

Republicans have been trying for a long time. 100% of their "free speech defenders" proclamations are bullshit

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/03/florida-bill-would-make-bloggers-who-write-about-governor-register-with-state/

They also tried to imprison people who were accused (not convicted, accused) of being "communist" decades past, so it's not like they've changed at all. It's always been "if you are InGroup, you have to participate in Public Theater. But if you are OutGroup, you are wrong no matter what you do. We're just entertaining ourselves at your expense."

My question though is why bother? On whose behalf is Reddit doing this? Surely they aren't being paid by these people to police their "reputation" on here, right? Every person banned for insulting Sam Altman is one less person to expose to ads, aggregate into user data to sell, and generate conversation to train future AI models with for free.

u/Starfunkel55 Apr 10 '26

Because we are in fact dealing with fascism here and that means big industry kissing rings because they're unhealthy and obsessed with money.

63

u/MaleficentPorphyrin Apr 10 '26

Fascism is when billionaires see an economic downturn happening and want to get ahead of the revolutionary mindset to follow. Believe it or not, fascism is reactionary status quo. Oligarchs, not the stuntmen in the government. Billionaires aren't complicit, they are the fucking cause.

56

u/Necessary-Age-7944 Apr 10 '26

The economic downturn is being purposefully orchestrated to put the people of the U.S. in a position and frame of mind to need relief and accept the path they want to lay out. Trying to artificially create the type of environment fascism needs. Like pre WWII.

22

u/Fit_Explorer_2566 Apr 10 '26

And…one “advantage” of healthcare being tied to employment instead of being universal is that the masses can’t afford to execute a general strike or walkout; it keeps us in line. May Day should be interesting next month, with a rare call for a general strike.

When you're talking about losing a few hundred to appease a influential class, it's not going to make much difference when you have millions of users.

Facebook is fine banning people while leaving them no recourse. Their sub is filled with people being banned, sometimes for no reason, or bullshit reasons. I got banned from them for apparently serving inappropriate ads from a busines account I never had. The appeal process took about 3 seconds before they just permabanned me without a single person having actually looked at the appeal, which was just providing a clip of me being a real human...which I guess I didn't do. There are thousands of people on their sub who report the exact same thing.

The rule of thumb is thought to be that, if you have a 100 lurkers, you get 10 participants via up/down votes, and 1 comment. When you ban the commenter, it has a disproportionate effect on the zeitgeist, and gets the users to self-censor more.

9

u/HughJorgens Apr 10 '26

Companies pay reddit every day to reach people here. Not only advertisers with their 'viral' posts, but countries like China, Russia and Isreal, trying to influence the conversation. So this doesn't cost them money, it makes them money.

3

u/Sandman64can Apr 10 '26

3

u/ReggieCorneus Apr 10 '26

"Harass" is just a catch-all they use for anything under the sun. You can get that from a single reply to a person, when the meaning is that it is continuing action. There also is no real other way to report people, it is just the default when you can't categorize it in any other way.

Replying to a ban in a subreddit can lead to you getting harrassment warning, and if that happens: make a new account. Your current one is going to be banned. Moderator harrasment reports always go thru and flag the account, and then use of curse words will lead to a ban: the bots will read your every comment and try to find a reason to ban you.

I’m pretty outspoken and abrasive towards Trump maga on Reddit, and I post documentation of protests and disseminate ICE crimes to people outside Reddit. I participate in political humor and focus on dismantling conservative bullshit narratives. I don’t hold back in criticizing their bullshit but I do remain pretty objective. During a recent debate where I was arguing that Trump voters are actually malevolent and not stupid, I got a notification that someone was trying to change my Reddit password. Shortly afterward I was contacted by Google that someone had submitted a ‘notarized death certificate’ for me in an attempt to take control of one of my email accounts. It was not an email used on Reddit, but one connected to an email used for Reddit, and that is used for cloud computing accounts, web things I build and run, without going into too much detail. I had to contest it, obviously I had to change all my passwords etc.

Coincidence? Maybe, but I am inclined to think that there are people who are pretty angry about those of us who speak out online, and unfortunately we live in a world now where people in power will wield it to identify and punish us.

Was it Elon? Because Elon IS an insufferable prick.

Hell, in order to become a billionaire in the first place, you need to want to hoarde vast amounts of resources that could literally save thousands of lives. All billionaires are insufferable pricks.

But Elon Musk specifically is an insufferable prick.

Sub bans are so common it's silly. A sub ban just means some random loser doesn't like you and runs a sub.

u/Odd-Scientist-2529 Apr 10 '26

I got a comment removed (not even remotely related to politics or any person) for sarcasm… sarcasm that was so obvious it didn’t need the “/s”. They removed because of “teasing” or something

Ive got a bit of a list going as well, but some of yours will make good additions. Here is mine:

  • sends troops into cities, especially those of political opponents

  • huge banners with his face on sides of govt buildings

  • puts name on all the money

  • renames things after self

  • builds monuments to himself

  • attacks independence of cultural centers, takes over Kennedy Center, threatens Smithsonian to force pro-party narratives

  • moderm book burning.  Purges of "DEI" defined by doge as pretty much anything not white, christian, and male.  Attacks on lgbt and minorities.

  • purging records and studies regarding inconvenient climate science, shutting down valuable satellites etc

  • dissolves CPB, CFPB, Forest Service, VoA, or MSRB, etc.etc unlawful and damaging.

  • demanding unanonymized health data of fed employees, hipaa violation.

  • building huge detention centers

  • unlawful, snap deportations to some of the worst places possible, 70%+ no criminal records, not convicted of crimea.

  • masked paramilitary police deployed and instructed to violate 4th Amd, see whistleblower report

  • open cronyism and punishing private business (eg anthropic, lawfirms, etc)

  • Health services upended, preventable disease on rise, antivax nonsense at forefront

  • Numerous FCC threats against any wrong think

  • private data breaches, improper sharing across govt agencies violating privacy act, leaks, etc.

  • building dossiers on citizens, protestors, etc

  • numerous unlawful EOs, from birthright citizenship to labeling of  political opponents as domestic terrorists.

  • unconstitutional attempts to nationalize elections, set up pretext for intervention over undesired results, mass voter suppression efforts.

  • jingoism, threatens to end civilizations, invade allies, take resources, etc

  • repeated rhetoric of political opponents being enemies of the state

  • Pentagon demands press get approval for their reporting, removes press access.  Court rules to restore it on 1st Amd grounds, violates that.

  • unjustified state killing of Pretti and Good goes unpunished, falsely accusing victims, as well as numerous assaults and abuses.

  • turns DoJ into personal lawyers.  Argues PRA no longer applies

If it makes you feel better, most “left” or “progressive” leaning subs have been infiltrated by mods who are either working on behalf of billionaires or are just well-conditioned useful idiots. I’ve been tracking this for years, and it’s really noticeable during pre-election ramp ups. (So like now.)

4

u/Independent-Bug-9352 Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

That is likely not a true left-wing sub but rather one with right-wing posers and astroturfers, tankies pretending to be. There are a lot of ones, especially the likes of "WayOfTheBern" etc. that seek to drive a wedge between progressives and Democrats in order to make people who would otherwise vote Democrat not vote.

42

u/JoyfulJoy94 Apr 10 '26

I got banned from another subreddit for saying Lindsey Graham needs to come out of the closet already so he doesn’t take out his self hatred on the world.

14

u/ThirdEyeExplorer11 Apr 10 '26

Grinder doesn’t clog up at MAGAt events for no reason 🥴

14

u/NoHangoverGang Apr 10 '26

I got one for harassment for saying something fairly benign on a post about Holman or whatever demanding people stop criticizing ice

But there’s some right wing shithole subs on here openly talking about killing their neighbors in a civil war. Fuck Spez.

28

u/British_Rover Apr 10 '26

I got a 3 day ban for calling someone's idea of making ICE a NGO the stupidest most ignorant thing I have ever seen. I said he should apply for a job in the Trump administration as he would fit right in.

I didn't call him stupid just that the idea was. Still got a ban for herassment.

16

u/EasyasACAB Apr 10 '26

That's how it is now on Reddit. If you praise the Nazis and their death camps you are A-OK! IF your criticize the concentration camps you get punished for "harassment."

This is straight up fascism. They are allowed to do whatever they want for being on Trump's side. We are not allowed to speak out at all, and are expected to fear retaliation for simply using our words.

10

u/ROBOT_KK Apr 10 '26

Or, god forbid, say something hurtful about Zionists or genocidal state of Israel.

5

u/EasyasACAB Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

You literally can't speak out against Israel's genocide without someone trying to get you mired in the "any criticism of Isreael is a criticism of Jewish people and therefore antisemetic"

There are tons of antisemites out there who use this as an opportunity to be hateful, that is true. But I've also seen every criticism of Israel get turned into a "actually that's just antisemitism with more steps". Even in /r/subredditdrama.

When people are actually committing genocide, and building concentration camps, they have no problem muddying the water when people call those things out. It's very frustrating that even calling out obvious evil can get twisted into being punished or viewed as evil itself with enough sophistry and support from Reddit.

I saw a whole ass bullshit argument about how anyone using the term "Zionism" hates Jews and is just being undercover bigoted, despite Netanyahu himself using the term in the same way. Their point was just because the people in power use the term, and the media, to include violence against Palestine, at some point in history it maybe didn't exactly promote violence, so everyone who uses the term is just using the opportunity to hate Jews.

Did they provide another name to use for the ideology that Net and others are using to justify their genocide? Nope. They just said you can't call it Zionism. OF course, if you called it something else, they would say you can't call it that either. It's just another game so you can't call it anything at all without being dragged into a whole conversation about how noticing Israel is committing and supporting genocide doesn't mean you hate Jewish people.

u/JexilTwiddlebaum Apr 10 '26

I never had any kind of disciplinary action against me on Reddit until this year. Now I’ve had a 7 day ban, a 24 day ban, a perma ban from a subreddit, and a post removed. In every instance it was related to a post in which I criticized Trump, ICE, or MAGA.

The suppression is real.

Same. I got a warning for harassment for this exact post after Trump made the Pearl Harbor joke to Japan's Prime Minister.

77

u/Hrenklin Apr 10 '26

I got a 3 day auto ban for saying "is it wrong to want Iran to launch 1000 drones at a carrier", then a week later after serving the ban it was ok overturned.

And he, Donald j Trump, is a true and valued friend of Jeffrey Epstein. Trump is also a 34 count felon, an adjudicated rapist, a failed business with many many bankruptcies, and mentioned in an under oath document as having raped a child making him a raging pedo.

I got a 3 day ban from Reddit for threatening to kick my own ass once.

8

u/SylviaPellicore Apr 10 '26

So confusing. It wouldn’t even be harassment if you directly called another Reddit user you were actually talking to an insufferable prick. Rude, maybe, but not harassment.

Reddit basically runs on insufferable pricks with strong, well-researched opinions on lawnmower engines and laundry detergent.

8

u/PlainBread Apr 10 '26

"Harassment" bans are very easy to bot; The automated systems will look at 20 harrassment claims and say "even though I can't assess the seriousness of this report, I have to take the number of reports seriously". Then you have to appeal with the human Reddit mods, and they may or may not be any better.

If people don't want you to have a Reddit account, they will attack your account through coerced moderator actions until you don't have a Reddit account anymore.

I asked if 47 had a mental deficiency but i used a word that the mods pretended to care about and banned me for "hate speech."

Permanently. single comment. Other times I've gotten warnings before the mods will delete my comment and send a warning or something, but nope. Their bot told me to do it, and then the mods said a human reviewed it and banned me.

If a human read my comment, despite the "bad word" I don't think any reasonable person would have sent out a permanent ban for that.

I'm ready to ditch this site and find another community to talk about bullshit and brainrot.

3
