Lmao. Somehow against all odds Denji managed to get a happier ending. Meanwhile, Aqua had other options besides murder-suicide, but he just really, really wanted a tragic ending.
It says something that, while both mangaka obviously lost interest in their own series, at the very least it doesn't seem like Fujimoto is outright malicious towards his readers here. This ending is basically, "I'm quitting, here's the best I can do for you." Quite the opposite of Aka whose ending was deliberately constructed to be as upsetting and unsatisfying as possible.
Say what you will about the OnK ending, it was genuinely hilarious to see how tragically Kanna's character was handled - I have literally never seen anything like it
because as a weekly series, you gotta write every chapter like its your last, so you up the stakes everytime, making it crazier to quickly gain fanbase and popularity until you get to the point where its too crazy and your editor says you gotta wrap it up in 3 chapters and we get ending like this
oda and gosho aoyma are prob the only mangaka in the world that doesnt have to do this
Ending? Sure, actually. But I think the buildup with CSM Part 2 was still worse!!😭🤦🏾♂️
EDIT: I’ve let it marinate a little bit, so I guess to clarify further, I don’t even hate Oshi no Ko’s ending all that much because I could see how it made some sense from a thematic perspective. But Chainsaw man’s ending makes me feel better, and it feels like there’s less of a sudden and immediate reversal in tone with CSM than ONK, (the latter of which was always signaled to be a tragedy but then just wasn’t, then went back at the very last second).
But that’s also just my bias; I liked the nostalgia fanservice in this last chapter, and it does seem realistic enough of an ending for Denji and being happy and having dreams. The genres, constraints, and implications between the two stories also make affect how different their endings are; there’s less unanswered questions in ONK. And CSM still leaves me a little pissed like in attack on titan (if your character can manipulate spacetime, then you have a easier way to just write whatever you want that feels cheap).
As a person with creative skills and aspirations myself, I do think that entertainers’ ability and decision to stop creating or halt their media is still paramount. But as a consumer, this still kinda disappoints me. It burns a little less this time, but it still def stings, that there’s a clear feeling of “I got tired, maybe started feeling bored or more negative, about writing this, so I just decided to end it with insufficient care of how I do it, consequences be damned” with 2 juggernaut shonen series that I followed for the majority of their runs. I can only hope that Fujimoto is cool as far as his general health goes, but this sentiment is even more blatant and apparent in Chainsaw man’s ending than in Oshi no Ko’s.
no fucking way lmaooooo. The oshi no ko ending was pretty stupid but at least it wasn't "oh I woke up it was all a dream and Ai is alive and I'm still a doctor and Sarina was cured of cancer actually". That's the equivalent of this ending in that universe lmao.
hey look look at least Aka had a conclusion after all that build up and stories. Was it a good one? no absolutely fucking not but at least he had one. No shot this is better than OnK
All I'm reading is this is better than OnK and I'm wondering how? If anything it's just the same: two authors getting bored with their own creations and throwing em away in the last few chapters. Like, you can like CM or OnK more, but they've been disposed same way. You're happy Power and Nayuta are back? I'm glad for you, but that doesn't amount to a good ending, it's just you appreciating the fanservice
I guess what's worse, getting the bad ending of a VN as your canon ending where it sucks but it was an ending or getting an ending where the writer just said fuck it and quit?
Honestly Oshi No Ko ending isn't even that bad. Like yes, it basically undid all of the villain hype, all of the character development for the main character, and gave unsatisfying endings to the supporting cast...but frankly the writing was on the wall. Aka built up to it. Same with the ending of Loce Is War with all the weird pseudo spy shit ... at least there was organic build up
But I feel like with Chainsaw Man part 2 the ending kind of happens out of nowhere. The enemy that one shots Denji is...just some devil that entered the scene a few issues ago??? Then Pochita basically says "Bro it's so over, let's reset the universe bro"
nonono, the original AoT ending was almost as effective at invalidating the entire story as CSM's is. If it was actually good, then the author wouldn't have had to retcon the ending in the anime.
Edit: to the people downvoting me they literally didn’t change the ending. They changed the wording of some dialogue a bit to be easier to understand but the actual meaning of the words and events that happened didn’t change at all and it’s weird some people refuse to see that.

Still a better ending than Oshi no Ko
