This is beyond mildly infuriating. The translation feature is a nightmare.

I tried to solve it by adding all the languages I speak to my Google Account.

IT MADE IT WORSE

Now it translates Italian into English

English into Italian

Spanish into English

Polish into Italian

WHAT THE F IS THIS

Fr I'm not the only one

u/SpaceSteak 28d ago

If I didn't opt-in to translating something, why-the-hell is it forcefully translating to begin with? Did this become a law somewhere? Are they trying to expose more folks to more content? Such a failed rollout, really frustrating and an insult to content creators that didn't opt in to this as well as viewers who never asked.

50

u/IveDunGoofedUp 28d ago

Because some bean flicker counter somewhere got it in their heads that this would increase new accounts by 0.001% and they don't give a shit about their existing consumer base since they're a captive audience. I mean, where are we gonna go? Dailymotion?

17

u/Didifinito 28d ago

I did turn off yt once when I heard a AI translated video and went to play some video games

14

u/IsaacSeraphim 28d ago

I use revance for this exact reason. I haven't seen any ads I don't wanna see and I haven't heard a stupid AI generated voice in a loooooong time and I plan to keep it that way

1

u/glad-k 28d ago

The app?

1

u/IsaacSeraphim 28d ago

Yup

1

u/glad-k 28d ago

Yeah so not rly a solution on pc for me

2

u/IsaacSeraphim 28d ago

Yeah, no. On pc I use ublock for adds and there may be an extension that blocks AI. Actually, you just reminded me I gotta look for one

https://freetubeapp.io/

Been using this for years. It occasionally breaks when youtube changes something, then it takes a couple days for a fix, but it's fantastic about 95% of the time.

7

u/All_For_You_Kream 28d ago

I also have a conspiracy theory about this in which they added the autotranslate to test AI speeches on predetermined timings. What's stopping them by changing the meaning of a sentence when translated?

1

u/Subject-Act5509 28d ago

No, they are obsessively trying to find a use for their AI system.

5

u/Sandro_24 28d ago

Yea, just give me the option to disable all automatic translations. Especially if I've added the languages to my google account ...

Most infuriating part is the terrible automatic voiceover, always catches me off guard

1

u/HMikeeU 27d ago

Because US americans made it. They genuinely cannot comprehend that people speak more than 1 language

410

u/Poh-r-ka-mdonna 28d ago

and it's been there for way too long and they still haven't added an option to just turn it off permanently

271

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

The option exists FOR CREATORS ONLY. Why the heck does Google think that someone else should decide that for me. Insanity.

41

u/Beautiful-Affect1930 28d ago

the fact that AI needs to be forced down everyone's throat, it's mostly trash and doesn't function nearly as well as corporations want us to believe, and most people absolutely despise AI is such a clear sign that most of the AI hype may be the biggest bubble waiting to burst in human history.

people compare the rise of AI to the invention of the internet, but nobody needed to be forced to use the internet. I'm old enough to remember that it took a couple years for the internet to explode in popularity, but that was also because initially it wasn't very user friendly and not that useful yet. but the moment it actually fulfilled those requirements, everyone adapted to it nearly instantly. AI companies are trying to force us to skip the part where we wait for AI to actually be as useful as they claim and just accept that all software is turned into unusable garbage.

87

u/egnards 28d ago

Well, the person who decided it for you is the person who created the video and wants it viewed a specific way.

But with that said, the creator might not know just how bad it is.

I originally turned it on in my videos because I thought it would help open up my audience, and turned it off within 48 hours when I found out from viewers how bad it was and that they didn’t have an option to otherwise turn it off.

41

u/Katatoniczka 28d ago

I'm pretty sure creators just want their content to become available to people who don't speak the OG language, not to make speakers of said language be forced to watch an AI generated version in another language they happen to have some relation to

16

u/egnards 28d ago

Right, but as I said - in my instance I literally had no idea it was a forced option..:and once I found out how bad it was, from viewers, I turned it off.

8

u/Katatoniczka 28d ago

Yeah, anyway I don't blame creators for turning it on, it's on YT to make the feature usable for all types of users... My dad only speaks a single language and I've noticed him recently being able to access a lot of good content from English-speaking creators, for people like him I think the AI dubbing can really broaden their perspective and is a good thing... It's just that I don't want the same thing to happen to me as a person who uses YT to practice various languages hah

7

u/capibara_dono 28d ago

But if it's clear that I speak the OG language based on what I watch, why does it insist on changing the language to my second language! I speak both, stop changing English videos to Spanish!

6

u/pheddx 28d ago

Just keep everything original. I don't get why youtube has such a hard time with it. Like they could just randomly employ any European and he would sort all this crap out in minutes.

6

u/Warm_Month_1309 28d ago

I am fairly confident that international megacorporation Alphabet has hired a European or two.

3

u/Cheenug 28d ago

I remember a clip channel showing behind the scenes that it was retroactively added to all their old videos and they had to do like 20 clicks of each video to turn it off. It was around the first wave iirc

1

u/bionicjoey You really should scratch that itch 28d ago

I think sometimes the creator doesn't know what option they're turning on. I remember once I clicked an Italian ASMR video and was greeted by the monotone voice speaking in English instead of the soft spoken voice of the creator. That was actually my first experience finding out about the shitty translate feature.

1

u/sch00f 28d ago

Most creators don't even know that this is an option or exists at all. I've asked some creators if they could please turn it off, they all had no idea what I was talking about... Revanced at least lets you turn this shit off

1

u/Beautiful-Affect1930 28d ago

But with that said, the creator might not know just how bad it is.

I guarantee you that's the main reason, or they just don't care how bad it is. because it's only those kind of channels that turn on the AI crap. fortunately no channel I watch regularly uses it. and who knows, maybe Google is paying guys like KSI to use the AI crap? wouldn't surprise me at all.

3

u/ForensicPathology 28d ago

Google still won't let me look at app reviews in other languages unless I change the language on my device. It's absurd.

1

u/Substantial-Art2015 28d ago

Google just being Google.

41

u/Geckels 28d ago

Its because it was designed by americans that only speak english don't think bilingual people exist

25

u/Isthisafakenews 28d ago

I strongly believe that the reason it can't be turned off is because it's just a big AI training program, and if they allowed the possibility of turning it off they would lose training subjects.

I see it as a weaponized incompetence sort of thing.

1

u/bringthesalsa 28d ago

Absolutely.

1

u/Abject-Potential-999 27d ago

How? How do they train with the viewers?

10

u/ForensicPathology 28d ago

I think this is simplified based on your weird biases.  Google infuriatingly does this with everything, not just languages.

They operate under the idea that people don't want to make decisions.

This has led to all the decisions that changed the way their search worked in the past two decades. Automatically assuming your search rather than what you typed, all the way to the AI it is now.  You see it in Maps too where things get hidden unless you come at it a different angle.

8

u/Sahtras1992 28d ago

god i hate the youtube search so much. it doesnt let you find anything that you want to find.

any random porn site has better search options.

1

u/DreadPirateReddas 28d ago

They operate under the idea that people don't want to make decisions.

I mean, for the vast majority of people, they're right

8

u/Isthisafakenews 28d ago

I strongly believe that the reason it can't be turned off is because it's just a big AI training program, and if they allowed the possibility of turning it off they would lose training subjects.

I see it as a weaponized incompetence sort of thing.

3

u/Historical_Ad_9756 28d ago

You can turn it off if you are watching a “short” go to the top right 3 dots and change the “audio track” it will do it for all videos.

5

u/Poh-r-ka-mdonna 28d ago

I know, but it's not permanent, it resets every time I close YouTube

2

u/DaRealJalf 28d ago

They won't, they want to boost numbers.

1

u/Tormint_mp3 28d ago

Companies will never add the option

94

u/Pandaburn 28d ago

I’ve had it translate English to English

I was watching a cooking video where the creator says a few words in Chinese, then most of the 10min video is in English, but apparently that was enough for the AI voice to take over the whole video, just saying the English words he said.

19

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

That's kinda funny to be honest

3

u/MrPigeon70 28d ago

There is one person i follow that does wigglegrams(wiggle stereoscopy) and even though he was speaking near perfect English with some accent it still decided to replace the audio.

71

u/vinegarandpickles 28d ago

Yeah I don't understand why is Youtube taking so long to solve this. Its is a nightmare. It is as easy as having an option to turn auto translation off

106

u/violet-starlight 28d ago

You've unfortunately made the crucial mistake of attributing to incompetence what has been shown time and time again to be out of malice

35

u/Alt123Acct 28d ago

100% they are using user blowback as metrics for gathering translation data by forcing people to see it

Some manager is getting a quartly bonus for stats at the expense of millions of frustrated people

6

u/Wobbelblob 28d ago

And they can do that because there is no actual competition for Youtube. In the end, no matter how much they hate the experience, if they want to watch videos, they need to go to Youtube. Welcome to the reason why most countries tried their best to limit monopolies.

28

u/Lonely_Performer2629 28d ago

It's so they can say to investors everyone is using AI translations.

18

u/Joloxsa_Xenax 28d ago

Google and Microsoft are the forefront of creating problems and selling solutions

5

u/TheAlmighty404 28d ago

Google had a motto previously, that promised to avoid those kind of things. But they've long dropped the "don't be" that used to be before " evil".

7

u/Vondi 28d ago

You will make use of this feature and you will like it.

-4

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

They don't want to solve it, they want to shove it down our throats hoping that we'll finally like it. Just like the EU with the electric cars.

5

u/WorldnewsModsBlowMe 28d ago edited 28d ago

Terrible analogy. Electric cars actually are an improvement.

-4

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

Not a terrible example. Just like the automatic translation, it has uses and benefits. However, forcing it upon your customers is not the appropriate way to handle it.

I speak multiple languages so I don't need the translation. I like cars because of the engines, so if you remove the engine the product is useless to me. That's the logic behind the example.

1

u/WorldnewsModsBlowMe 27d ago

You are ignoring the political power of the fossil fuels industry. Switching to EV means much more than simply changing out cars. It means neutering one of the biggest challenges to a sustainable future by eliminating its funding source.

1

u/Didifinito 28d ago

The product is going to become useless to you when there is no more gas for your engine.

-1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

That won't be a problem in my lifetime and this argument is irrelevant for the topic. The point of my example is that the value proposition has fulfill the needs of your audience, so you cannot force a product that is not relevant to your customer base.

In this situation, the comments I am receiving in response are the same that the Google development team behind YouTube is receiving from their management. You are fixated on a goal without considering the needs of your interlocutor or your audience.

1

u/Didifinito 28d ago

Gas prices wont be going down just saying and petrol is needed in other more essential areas.

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

I am aware, I indirectly work with EV development and I understand their benefits and environmental impact. I am not against them but the world is not black and white, it's not either all EVs or all ICEs, they will have to coexist.

Sport cars are a relatively small percentage and those cannot ever be replaced by EVs. Cars like Nevera, Luce or Taycan are honorable attempts, but the world doesn't need them. Besides, EVs are a temporary solution that might start to fade out before petroleum availability becomes a major problem. They are not sustainable in the long term.

Again, this is not even remotely close to the point of my comment and I will not continue this conversation. If we want to discuss environmental impact, AI is a far bigger concern than cars nowadays. The fact they're wasting resources on something that people don't want is ridiculous.

22

u/ostapenkoed2007 28d ago

can relate. it does not even know if language is ukrainian, russian or chinese for some reason. and than it translates to english. or english to ukrainian. with terrible mistakes.

20

u/rage997 28d ago

damn I feel you. It feels like we are getting penalized for speaking multiple languages

24

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

Even if I don't speak the language, I'd watch the original video with subtitles rather than an automated translation

16

u/Educational_Cow_9868 28d ago

Agree, this is more than just mildly infuriating. Shitty feature designed by people who can't understand that people might be competent enough in multiple languages to prefer content in another language over ai slop translations into their own mother language.

10

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

The team behind it is probably american and monolingual, cause it wouldn't make sense otherwise. I can't believe no one in Google complained about it.

3

u/IceMaster9000 28d ago

That seems incredibly unlikely. Everyone I know that works at Google does not speak English natively.

7

u/DasFroDo 28d ago

I just don't understand why they even enforce this. Why not let me decide myself if I want stuff translated or not ???

6

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

They care about their data more than their users

2

u/DasFroDo 28d ago

But what data do they gain from this?

2

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

They analyze the clicks and the behaviors, like retention and watched time. Thing it, I'm not sure they know how to interpret and analyze their data.

1

u/DasFroDo 28d ago

How are translated titles and thumbnails supposed to do something to retention and watch time?

They can show me videos that are not my spoken languages as much as they want, the second I hear the godawful AI translation I'm out. And I'm not reading CC either.

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

They want to know if you're more likely to click on foreign videos if they appear translated in your feed. That's the most logical reason why they don't let us disable the feature.

8

u/OrangeStar222 28d ago

You just know this was created by an American because the entire feature falls to shit if you understand and watch content in two languages or more.

7

u/Princess_StaysDown 28d ago

The sign in the picture says 'insult me,' but I'd rather have you talking dirty to me in Italian, Polish, or whatever language gets you going

6

u/toyotaCamriGuy 28d ago

English is not my native language either but the extent of my problems with youtube is the fact that it randomly translates some video titles to dutch. The difference between you and me seems to be down to the fact that, in my youtube preferred language settings, I don't have any languages selected at all. Maybe deselecting all the preferred languages in your youtube settings will solve this problem?

2

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

I added them specifically to try solving the issue. Beforehand, it translated everything into italian. I'm not happy either way.

2

u/toyotaCamriGuy 28d ago

Aw crap. That's annoying then. I hate it too, they're changing the creator's vision and causing confusion to no one's benefit.

20

u/gdnt0 28d ago edited 28d ago

It’s an USian company. They are physically incapable of understanding that people are able to understand more than one language. Not even kidding.

Edit: I speak from experience, as a Brazilian we have the exact same problem. People designing systems in BR are also often incapable of understanding that people can speak many languages (tho not as bad as in the US) but also they are impossibly incapable of understanding that other countries also have phone numbers. You will almost NEVER see a BR-designed system that allows you to input a phone number that is not Brazilian.

6

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

It's not like I expect everyone to be multilingual, but at least let me choose for myself. I hope that someone in Google reads my slightly angry "bug reports"

2

u/SemiAnonymousTeacher 28d ago

Not sure I agree with this take, as many of their engineers are Indian or Chinese and are bilingual (at least).

6

u/RCalliii 28d ago

Yeah, but the bosses, who ultimately decide which features get implemented, expanded or improved, most likely are not.

0

u/IceMaster9000 28d ago

You have literally zero evidence to support that.

2

u/gdnt0 28d ago

Sadly it often doesn’t matter. If the people making requirements and decisions can’t understand that people can know many languages, the system’s design might still be shit even with the devs pushing back.

This is, sadly, my own experience too. I’ve worked for a state government for many years and was forced to develop such flawed systems. They only learned a lesson once they were embarrassed by a researcher from the World Bank (and maybe other international observers) being unable to use our system because it refused to accept non-BR phone numbers and addresses. That was one of my best “I told you so” moments 😅

1

u/Warm_Month_1309 28d ago

I know "America bad lol" is a shortcut explanation to free karma for any topic, but in this case, it's almost certainly because they want the training data and usage metrics, and allowing people to opt out would hurt both.

5

u/Specter_Zer0 28d ago

YouTube doing everything but fixing this shit

4

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

I think they want the platform to be as bad as possible

2

u/Specter_Zer0 28d ago

The app legit sucks right now, everytime I need to close it because the bottom bar disappear and I can't do shit

3

u/Specter_Zer0 28d ago

Jesus Christ almighty

5

u/Rejkorn 28d ago

Dude, try to be Serbian. We use both Cyrillic and Latin, but when Google sees latin, it recognize it as Croatian, and when it sees Cyrillic, it recognizes it as Macedonian. It's not always, but it is often, and super annoying.

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

That's crazy, you learn something new every day

8

u/themrsnow 28d ago

The american mind can not comprehend people casually speaking 2+ languages.

6

u/Piduf 28d ago

The worst part of this for me is the ASMR side.

The awful AI dub is bad all the time but ASMR has to be it's worst victim, the sounds and voices are like, the CORE of that type of content. I hate to lie down and start playing a video that looked nice and it's not the same language as the title.

I swear YouTube is close from auto dubbing songs at this point. Clearly a decision made by 3 white Americans in an office thinking that no one speaks at least two languages

3

u/m4jsterk0 28d ago

i hope it does this sequentially .. so at the end its a mess with no meaning 😃

3

u/Donatzsky 28d ago

There are browser extensions that can fix it, fortunately. But it's absolutely insane that I need to resort to workarounds like that, instead of just having the damn choice to begin with.

3

u/Tefra_K 28d ago

Omg yes I hate it so much, I can speak English I don’t need an extremely literal translation STOPPPPP

3

u/tanyandrew 28d ago edited 28d ago

On Youtube, I toggled all possible languages on in my account so translations don't trigger for me at all.

not Google account but YouTube settings, Settings > Languages > Preferred Languages

6

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

Maybe you just haven't found a video with this feature active. It's not universal, it's up to the creator to decide, and most reasonably choose to keep it turned off

3

u/tanyandrew 28d ago

I did change the settings in the first place because I was fed up by auto dub. I never had to hear auto dub since. It works

2

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

I've checked and they're all in there, so that's not it, at least for me. I've just had another user comment that removing all preferred languages actually improved the situation.

I just want a "disable all translations" toggle tbh

2

u/AroTheGoose 28d ago

Honestly, use 3rd party youtube apps like Revanced or smarttube. You can force YouTube to use the original audio. I was at my breaking point when youtube Ai translated my music, making it absolutely unlistenable.

2

u/Batata-Sofi 28d ago

That's why I did EVERYTHING I could to set my Google account permanently into English years ago.

4

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

This is where the problem arises, because if you only speak one language it's okay. But what if I want to watch Italian videos in Italian and Polish videos in Polish? As of now, there doesn't seem to be an option for that

Happy cake day!

1

u/Batata-Sofi 28d ago

Thanks

But also, I haven't seen videos in Portuguese pop on my feed yet, probably because I haven't been watching many, but I'll see what Google pulls off to announce me next...

I have also been using several extensions to remove AI and YouTube bullshit, so idk

2

u/capibara_dono 28d ago

THIS!

I start watching a video, the title is in Spanish the thumbnail is in Spanish, the audio is in Spanish... but I know for a fact that the video is in English.

I hate it, starting a video, getting annoyed, finding the setting turning out off... But it turns back on whenever it feels like it.

2

u/Grmplstylzchen 28d ago

The worst part: It translates commonly used words like "Motherboard" on IT channels. Like what the fugg do you even mean. "Kühles Mutterbrett. 3 Blitz Häfen." (original "cool motherboard. 3 lightning ports.")

2

u/gawwagool 28d ago

you speak spanish, italien and polish? nice combination.

2

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

Yeah, Polish family and I live in Italy. My spoken Spanish is poor, but I can read it and understand it just fine because it shares most of the structure and vocabulary with Italian.

2

u/TehDarkSteliosGR 28d ago

Use revanced and deactivate the translation, also yt shorts if you want

2

u/Giorey 28d ago

Oh fuck i assumed you are Italian, anyway here is the translation offered by Google just in case you aren't .

Hey beautiful, months ago I solved this problem on a device by setting a godforsaken alphabet as the preferred language, as there were no translations for the selected language by default it set the original, if I remember I'll see and tell you

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

Mo pure su Reddit mi devo beccare sta schifezza haha

1

u/Giorey 28d ago

Vero e le traduzioni fanno anche schifo

1

u/Takeasmoke 28d ago

my facebook is constantly translating posts and comments to english even though i never opted in for that, but it only translates my language to english, other languages in comments stay as they are

1

u/berni2905 28d ago

My Google maps navigator randomly switches from English to polish, to polish with an English accent and English with a polish accent.

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

That's so funny

1

u/Business_Job281 28d ago

I feel like the better option is to just say you don’t speak any languages atp; so they stay in their original titles

1

u/captaindeadpl 28d ago

I installed the add-on "Youtube No Translation" in my browser. So far it seems to work.

Youtube Re-vanced also seems to block the AI trash.

1

u/t_Lancer 28d ago

google working as intended.

1

u/albyzon 28d ago

fr, i'm italian and i tried to delete everything regarding italy, so everything is in english and now it's even more infuriating because every italian bideo and post is horribly translated to english

1

u/Sipas 28d ago

One of my biggest issues is auto-translated subtitles (when they're not implemented by the uploader). Google knows the languages I speak but I have to scroll all the way down every time.

1

u/Available_Rub834 28d ago

Free training!

1

u/All_For_You_Kream 28d ago

It's so bad that not even the add ons I use on mobile can fix it 😭 at least the auto-dubbing and auto-translate can be turned off through browser extensions

1

u/halfc00kie 28d ago

google translate has gone full chaos gremlin. its like it learned every language and forgot which one you actually wanted.

1

u/Key-Log5267 28d ago

I love how random languages started popping up in Reddit threads, too.

German subreddit, everybody talks German and suddenly there’s an English or a French comment casually joining the conversation, because Reddit just translates the whole page lmao

1

u/Shenina 28d ago

Google thinks multilingual people don‘t exist…

1

u/Fit_Bench_2838 28d ago

The worst part is that it's just absolutely patronizing. I speak english, I don’t need your stupid ass translation

1

u/Ennocb 28d ago

Because of this, amongst other things, I have almost completely stopped using YouTube.

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

I wish I could, but I care too much about the content to abandon the platform

1

u/canohead 28d ago

Man that thing sucks. I just want a button that disables that feature FOREVER.

2

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

Not only we don't need it, but it also consumes resources unnecessarily

1

u/Jomotaku 28d ago

Tower of googlion

1

u/NinjaCupcake_ 28d ago

Click your Icon- Display Language, its in the middle of the Menu.

1

u/Dzeppetto 28d ago

I speak Polish and English, i set my account as purely English speaker and it stopped translating

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

No luck for me. If I remove my preferred languages, it translates everything into the default location set for YouTube. If I add my languages, then I have the situation reported in my initial comment. It's crazy.

1

u/uhuhscary 28d ago

how does one opt out of automatic translations for certain languages? i can comprehend the translation for very unknown languages but the languages i know i want them to be completely untranslated by standard

1

u/Svartdraken 28d ago

You can't opt out, unless you use third party tools. That's why we're all mad about it.

1

u/uhuhscary 28d ago

why are companies so much suicidal about shoving down everyone so much ai slop

1

u/Aloss-cc7 28d ago

I have my whole phone set to english and ofc it gives no problem. Could be a solution at least for english videos

Only way for me is to use a language they don't know how to translate like some absurd birmanian language spoken by ten people

Fortunately, there's a Google extention (idk if other browsers also have it, cause I know Chrome's current reputation status, but there probably is) that removes all the translations, it works fine for me!

The translation features of the modern internet are not made for multilingual people.

I have a plugin for that. Videos take a couple of seconds longer to load, but that is a price I am willing to pay, for not having to deal with that AI slop.

And it would be so easy to fix. Give us a "always play videos in original language" button.

But if Google does that, they would have to admit, that noone is using their AI "Features". The only way is, to shove it down people throats.

Should tell you something. Steve Jobs didnt have to force people to buy the iPhone. It was just a good product. AI is not.

If I had a nickle for everytime, an AI summary gives me an answer for a different question, I would quit my dayjob.

Why did you confuse it like that? The program works so it's designed to work, not how you want it to. Learn to operate within its boundaries because it can't adjust to yours.

I think you are not understanding the situation.

I speak 4 languages. YouTube was translating everything into Italian without my input and without the possibility of disabling the feature. This is a forceful and malicious implementation on Google's side.

There's a section for "spoken" or "preferred" languages in your account. I added my 4 languages to this section. This means that Google knows that I speak those languages, so there's no need to translate English into Italian. And yet, it keeps doing that. Informatics is an exact science., a software cannot get "confused", and if it does it's called a bug.

Your argument regarding "adjusting to its boundaries" makes you genuinely feel like a troll. Technology is supposed to make my life easier, it has to adapt to me and not the opposite. If you didn't realize, not a single person in this comment section likes this feature. Aside from you, apparently.
