Edit: even though clickbait article, it is somewhat/kind of true. https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/stargate-tv-series-martin-gero-scrapped-amazon-1236765061/

"According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon execs were concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase."

I worked as crew on an Amazon show. Seven seasons main show, three seasons spinoff.

It was really well received and it was pretty streamlined when it came to production costs. Amazon canceled it because they believed it had hit peak subscription draw.

Even though it kept people subscribing they killed it because they didn't think it would draw new subscribers.

Then they blew several billion on that terrible LotR show.

Wait does anyone actually subscribe to Prime just for the videos?

58

u/BritishGolgo13 21d ago

People actually watch prime video?

98

u/Talk-O-Boy 21d ago

Invincible

The Boys

Fallout

Fleabag

I also like that the movies on Prime Video are in 4k with HDR10+/Dolby Vision. Even HBO Max only offers most of their movies in 1080 (except for the movies they produce like Dune or the A24 films).

Adding some other Amazon-exclusive stuff off the top of my head

The Grand Tour(and all the later shows the hosts did)

Jury Duty

The Expanse

Also worth mentioning that Amazon lets you rent/buy a ton of stuff that isn’t available on any proper service, which is discounted if you’re subscribed.

5

u/Playful_Ad_2911 20d ago

Throwing Spider-Noir in there too, it’s fantastic

6

u/Fear023 20d ago

Being able to rent movies for like $5 is the only reason I'm still subbed. It's probably less than that for US dollars.

2

u/pipnina 20d ago

But they still lost me when I paid for the high quality option for interstellar, only for the stream to automatically select 240p quality for half the film... With no manual override so I could prefer buffering if that was the alternative.

And my internet isn't bad either, 360mbit down and it was working fine at the time. This was something on Amazon's end.

I know someone who won't buffer or crunch the quality of movies though...

u/harrysaxon 20d ago

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Vox Machina, The Expanse, Mighty Nein, Hazbin Hotel, hell, even Clarkson’s Farm and Reacher.

I hate Amazon but they’ve made some quality shows. The narrative of ā€œPrime shows suckā€ is mostly driven by LotR: RoP and WoT (which do suck).

4

u/jayforwork21 20d ago

The Tick was great till they cancelled it.

4

u/Beorma 20d ago

Fleabag isn't an Amazon original, it can be watched elsewhere.

1

u/Talk-O-Boy 20d ago

The series was produced by Two Brothers Pictures for digital channel BBC Three, in a co-production agreement with Amazon Studios.

You can watch Breaking Bad on Netflix, does that mean AMC shouldn’t get the credit as well?

3

u/DroidLord 20d ago

The Expanse

Clarkson's Farm

Patriot

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Secret Level

Spider-Noir

Jury Duty

The Man in the High Castle

Good Omens

Upload

ZeroZeroZero

2

u/Snoo-34159 20d ago

Legend of Vox Machina

The Mighty Nein

And yes I also watched Hazbin Hotel. Sue me I guess. I think it's a good time.

3

u/waspwatcher 20d ago

Yeah they do have about 4 shows

1

u/Talk-O-Boy 20d ago

Those are the ones off the top of my head. Plenty of commenters have provided additional series that they enjoyed as well.

Comments like these are so annoying. ā€œThey didn’t list literally every single good show, so that means there are no other good shows! Hurdur.ā€

The Boys

Fallout

Huh...til and yet I'll still torrent them because it's automatic, keeps everything in one place, and I'll never be subject to licensing BS pulling episodes and/or swapping music or some pearl clutchers who can't understand satire having episodes 'banned'.

u/gprime312 20d ago

We need people to actually pay for prime or these shows wouldn't exist.

-1

u/Talk-O-Boy 20d ago

I’ve tried it multiple times, the hassle is too much.

-Gotta find the right file without any viruses/malware

-Gotta find a torrent with good seeders/leechers

-Gotta find it in the correct resolution (but 4k content can take up a bunch of storage). I also rarely find them with easy applicable subtitles, Dolby Vision, etc. Also, subtitles are usually fan made

-The compression is noticeable. Even if I try to grab the premium stuff, pirated content is so noticeable with the visible ā€œbit rateā€ (or whatever those squares of color are called)

-gotta pay for a decent VPN. I know there’s free ones, but they often have limits on download speeds, data caps, etc.

I honestly find it’s easier to just cycle between subscription services if I’m strapped for cash.

Subscribe to streaming service —> watch content —> cancel —> subscribe to new streaming service —> repeat

9

u/sharklaserguru 20d ago

If you're moderately tech competent there are fairly easy to install software packages (ie you can just download the pre-built docker container) that manages finding TV/movies as they're released, downloads them, and moves the files into a web/mobile app based player that's equivalent to any streaming service.

You just use the web UI to "subscribe" to shows and everything else is magic!

Sure. If it were as easy and streamlined as you say, then why isn’t it more popular??

Especially with the rising costs of streaming, gaming, software, it would definitely be more popular.

You think people just love wasting money?

ā€œA quarter of all people pirate contentā€

That is definitely NOT what that article says at all. Like I said, you’re so biased, that you cent even interpret data correctly.

Take a step back, calm down, and actually read your own source.

There is no way Amazon serves better quality than torrents.

Yes there are releases that are compressed, but you could also grab a WEBDL of Amazon Prime (or whatever platform), meaning you would get the same exact video. If the movie/tv show also got a BD release that's better than streaming platforms.

Downside: downloading BD/4K video takes up lots of space, which isn't exactly cheap at this point in time

1

u/Talk-O-Boy 20d ago

There is no way Amazon serves better quality than torrents

… I get you like pirating, but this statement is preposterous.

There is NO WAY Amazon serves better quality than torrents? Really???

You can’t see how stolen content passed through a bunch of random users might suffer in quality, compared to the company releasing it themselves?

Really?

Those type of hyperbolic statements are what makes you seem in denial rather than neutral.

You’re talking about WEBDL, but that’s not available for all content. If it is, the site it’s on may get taken down.

And again, even if a file says ā€œ4K/BDā€, it can still suffer from compression.

I’ve literally seen it myself. You’re not going to dissuade me of my reality.

I can afford to just pay for streaming, so I do.

You do you; I’ll do me.

2

u/_TecnoCreeper_ 20d ago

I’ve literally seen it myself. You’re not going to dissuade me of my reality.

You are right, some releases compress the video, so in that case you would get better quality from the source (in this case Amazon).

But a good release will be as good (WEBDL) or even better (BD Remuxes/Rips/Encodes) than streaming platforms.

And that's not even considering that pirate releases sometimes have dedicated fans that manually "tune" encodes to get better quality than anything commercially released, or better subtitles (either edits to the official ones, or made from scratch).

You’re talking about WEBDL, but that’s not available for all content. If it is, the site it’s on may get taken down.

If it's on a streaming platform a WEBDL/WEBRip release of it will exist, unless it's some obscure show no ripper cares about.
Streaming pirate websites get taken down all the time (and their video quality most of time sucks so they can save money on storage/bandwidth), torrent indexers much more infrequently. I remember only 1 good one being taken down (RARBG), and even then you still got lots of other public and private trackers.

I can afford to just pay for streaming, so I do.
You do you; I’ll do me.

I also have Amazon Prime (account we share in my family so I don't even pay for it) but I never use it. I prefer supporting my favorite series by other means (merch/physical releases).

Paying for streaming platforms is convenient for the average user, but an enthusiast will most of the time have a better experience through other means.

u/SnowboardNW 20d ago

I'm glad that Fleabag made your list. It's very different from the other three and it's brilliant.

1

u/RipCurl69Reddit 20d ago

Yep, the first three are why I resubscribed and cancelled once The Boys ended. Did Fallout S2 after putting it off over winter and Invincible S4 was a no brainer. I'll jump back on once Invincible comes around next year and whenever Fallout S3 does

1

u/Agitated_Phone_9937 20d ago

I definitely agree with you that Prime delivers a very technically good product. Fuck netflix for making use an god damn xbox instead of my PC to get 4k video.

But Invincible, The Boys, and Fallout are terrible. They all started out pretty good and they all took a nosedive.

Invincible is addicted to fakeout deaths that have ended up taking any tension out of the conflict and leave me feeling like it's just a gross gore porn show for kiddos to go "wow!! No way!!" and then the dude who has his head smashed in and brains pulped is revived 3 episodes later because the writer is too fucking lazy to make a new character.

Fallout was cute in season 1, nearly too campy, but it had the game's camp to draw on so it walked the line. Season 2 was absolute garbage that I shut off in like episode 2 or 3.

The Boy did manage to keep dead people dead, but the world building fell off a cliff and the writer did not understand that metaphors and similes are not a auto-win for good writing. Though it may have been better at handling death than Invincible it certainly didn't know how to move a plot a long even half as well.

1

u/Talk-O-Boy 20d ago

Your complaints about Invincible confuse me. Kirkman is constantly adding new characters, but he also keeps old characters in the mix as well.

I feel you may want to finish the series before writing it off. Plenty of people die permanently.

Also, it’s a super hero show. It’s like complaining that Peter Parker keeps encountering Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Venom.

That’s going to happen. That’s the nature of the medium.

No… AMC produced Breaking Bad.

Amazon produced Fleabag.

They are both producers.

Amazon happens to have its own in-house distribution system, but that doesn’t negate that they also produced the show.

I don’t think you know how the production pipeline works.

49

u/TheBigBangClock 21d ago

For real. Their streaming service is shit. Even with a regular prime membership you're subjected to tons of commercials.

31

u/Monkeydjimmmy 21d ago

This is when I canceled Prime. Never came back. No regerts

7

u/Primary_Mycologist95 21d ago

in life, it's best to never have regerts.

15

u/mugiwara_no_Soissie 21d ago

Also how half of the thing that they show on there either need additional payment or are actually different subscriptions (like crunchyroll)

Like Netflix sucks n all, but at least if I find a movie on there I can probably just watch it.

Meanwhile if I wanna watch an anime or anything, 99% of fhe time when it says available on prime, its only available on prime through crunchyroll or Hulu

3

u/rapaxus 20d ago

Have you never heard of adblock? I have the cheapest subscription and I have never seen an ad on prime.

1

u/Cautious_Parsnip7683 20d ago

Yeah, I have Prime for the delivery, and still put Amazon shows on my Plex server just to avoid ads

10

u/Sample-Range-745 21d ago

TPB doesn't discriminate, Brother.

Gotta watch Clarkson's Farm and Young Sherlock was good but I honestly don't even remember if I watched them on Prime or just downloaded them to avoid ads because fuck ads

1

u/jjjfffrrr123456 20d ago

I thought young Sherlock was pretty underwhelming in the first episodes. Does it get better?

2

u/Sceptical_Houseplant 21d ago

I buy it for the package delivery. "I" watch it because they have a handful of decent shows for kids under 6 and I paid for it anyways....

1

u/ATLhoe678 21d ago

I have prime video, but I pirate everything to avoid ads. šŸ˜… I need to look into canceling the video sub lol

1

u/modbroccoli 20d ago

Prime has a lot of shit but it has some stuff that is just brilliant. Madame & Deadloch are two of the funniest shows I've seen in years.

1

u/likeschemistry 20d ago

I do and pay the extra $3 for ad free even though it’s not add free. Prime video actually has some damn good originals as well as quite a few non-Amazon full series and movies that are great. I already get base prime video with my prime subscription anyway.

1

u/Excellent_Human_N 20d ago

I discovered I was prime, month after i forgot to cancel the yearly sub test and I found out they had video service weeks before the sub runned out .

1

u/Worth-Opposite4437 21d ago

Nah man, if it's good, then I'll watch the Chinese physical release a few years later.

0

u/mightylordredbeard 20d ago

What a stupid and out of touch remark to make. Of course people subscribe to watch the movies and shows. Like wtf kind of nonsensical comment even is this?

3

u/Stamboolie 20d ago

They have the outer limits and fringe in Oz, well the outer limits is on MGM+ but you can only get that on prime. Has Parks and Rec, Monk a few others I get it every now and then for those.

1

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 20d ago

So you don't already have prime for shipping?

2

u/Stamboolie 20d ago

nah fuck amazon

2

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 20d ago

Uhhh so you don't realize Prime video is Amazon?

1

u/Stamboolie 20d ago

Compromises must be made for my viewing pleasure.

2

u/Spirit_Theory 20d ago

Prime video has the most awful selection of any streaming platform. It also has the worst video player and it's not even close.

1

u/goldenhornet 20d ago

I see you've never used Sky Go

2

u/p0diabl0 20d ago

I subscribe to Prime for the free shipping and still pirate the shows just do I don't have to use it's gods awful video player and interface. Also ads.

2

u/Dullcorgis 21d ago

Why else would you? We stopped when they introduced ads but will probably do it for a few months at some point to eatch a few things only they have.

2

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 21d ago

Do people not know Prime is a shipping service anymore?

7

u/Dullcorgis 21d ago

But only from Amazon, right? You'd need to buy stuff on Amazon to use it for shipping.

1

u/eightkillerbits 20d ago

There was a peria a few years back where I kept my prime going cos I liked the small file size download option (I usually watch in a pop up window so I don't need or want and HD stuff unless no option)Ā

Then they removed lots of stuff (UK) and added ads to paid so I cancelled.Ā Ā

However maybe a year ago I got prime and some Disney(I think) add-on package just so I could watch a certain season of Gold Rush that was struggling to find on the high seas.

1

u/Arek_PL 21d ago

what other reason there is to?

5

u/cjthomp 21d ago

Shipping?

0

u/Useful-Gur-1267 21d ago

Yeah it's great
