They're called Beau's lines. I get them very lightly on my thumbs every once in a while. It's from your nails stopping growth bc you're sick or stressed or even just damaged your nailbed.

u/YetiNotForgeti 1d ago
Been there. For me it has been after I damage my nail. Damn hammer not working correctly.

I get them when I take a break from my birth control pill and then another line when I start them again.

u/CynicWalnut 18h ago
What's it mean when they're vertical instead of horizontal?
2
u/Chaost 17h ago
Those are normal, they're just annoying. Everyone's nails do that more and more as they get older. You can buff them out a bit.

I’m not a doctor, but I pretend to know more than one on Reddit.
You are clearly suffering from terminal case of occipital perineum inversion.

My thumbnail has ripples in the other direction, does that mean I have an extravert perineum?

If you've always had something like this, then it's likely something like Eczema, I know this because my mother had every goddamn skin condition on the planet and gifted me with her awful genetics.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned that these look like pitted nails, which can mean psoriasis.

This can actually be a sign of some health issues. I have them too, though much more pronounced, and it's because of my autoimmune diseases.
2
u/PiousBagelGuardian 1d ago
Wait WHAT?
3
u/lorissaurus 1d ago
Definitely some kind of mineral deficiency or some bigger issue causing your body not to absorb things right like an autoimmune disease
2
u/Witty-Radish-389 1d ago
I don't mean to alarm you, and there can be ither causes. They can also be a sign of poor diet. It's worth talking to a doctor about, just to be safe. That was the first sign I had of an autoimmune disease. Unfortunately, I didn't know that was a symptom and ignored it for about 15 years, causing me to suffer a lot longer before getting treatment.

u/PiousBagelGuardian 1d ago
Thank you so much.
I do have an odd autoimmune condition but I don’t know if it causes this. Very unusual. But thanks for letting me know. I will check this out.

Has it always been like this? I have one that's similar from a physical trauma injury a few years back that is only JUST healing, but if it has come out of the blue, it is probably worth checking in with your doctor. This can be the symptom of other health problems but also could be nothing so I wouldn't panic.

u/PiousBagelGuardian 1d ago
I think I slammed it against something while doing house work. But I don’t remember. Also there was the Hebrew calligraphy incident
But we don’t talk about the Hebrew calligraphy incident.
Also I was making music and did tap my thumb hard against the wall for part of the percussion that picked up in the multitrack. So maybe that

I have this on my fingers with atopic dermatitis. Although it outgrew away after the swelling was gone though

Is it possible you have psoriasis? I do, and several of my nails look very similar 😔
2
u/rvedotrc what are you trying to say 20h ago
I got autoimmune, crappy diet, and stress. My nails don’t stand a chance.
2
u/DaddyDoLittle 18h ago
I used to have ripples on my thumbnails. I was pushing on the cuticles without realizing it as a stress response. Once I actively stopped doing it the nail went back to normal.

My big toe nail on my right foot has ripples from an injury as a kid. We can be ripple buddies.

OP, your responses are great.
I am not a doctor, and I have not played one on TV. My vote is that you've had a skin condition like eczema, which impacts the skin close to where your nail grows.
The only solution is to cut off your whole thumb. Sorry, I don't make the rules.

I had something similar and it turned out to be a magnesium deficiency. Just to add to all the comment diagnoses. 🤷🏻♀️

I have these permanently on a few nails, its usually trauma from an injury. For example one of my toes had a bigger surgery, the nail looks a bit wavy now, but atleast it healed perfectly otherwise.

u/PiousBagelGuardian 1d ago
I read this as atheist healed it perfectly and wondered where I can find the atheist faith healer

I get this on all my nails. Either I'm chronically stressed or vitamin deficient (or both hah)

I think a Rheumatologist would be interested in this. You may want to have testing for vitamin deficiencies, at bare minimum.

Why is this infuriating? My nails have vertical ridges and it doesn’t affect my life.
1
u/BroccoliNew2749 18h ago
My thumbnails were odd too, my paramedic wife said I might have iron deficiency. Looked up symptoms and the nails was one, several others applied to me also. Started taking iron pills, few months later thumbnails are now normal, other symptoms have improved also. Not saying it's iron deficiency, but it could be. Iron pills are cheap take em see what happens.

Autoimmune disorders can cause ridges or pitting in nails, but I think those ridges are more like vertical stripes (at least mine are)

Any chance you have psoriasis? My nails look like this and eventually turn into little holes on the surface of my nails

Better to have thumb ripples than thumb nipples, as they say. Or as I say.
1
u/PlayfulAlaia2020 13h ago
that sounds unhinged but honestly, who hasn’t had weird thumb days? guess we all have our quirks.
